Yes i downloaded the 163.44 drivers and they are a big improvement i get 20+ fps than i used to with the old drivers on CS:Source
-
-
so is 163.44 the new "best driver"?
-
OK....so now im experiencing some skipping in games... like frequently every 30 sec....
-
Hmmm....they seem pretty damn good for me.
-
-
No no...I don't really care about 3dmark and all that. As long as I see a noticeable difference in any way, for the better, I just keep the drivers. Sorry....you'll have to ask someone else for benchmarks and what not.
-
can you overclock with 163.44?
-
You don't run fraps or anything?
-
I didn't notice any improvement in the CSS video stress test with the 163.44's, but they sure didn't decrease performance, and newer is generally better, so I trust them.
Here is a video stress test with settings shown, XP Pro SP2 with 163.44's on an 8600M GT:

I installed the new 163.44 drivers today, and the only issue I had is that Oblivion crashed once because the driver crashed. I didn't notice any performance increases though. I only updated so I could play the Bioshock Demo.
-
so mixed reviews on the 163.44....
-
I am running 163.44 at the moment, but other than a slight glitch in Overlord, they seem to be working fine. I'll admit I havn't checked to see if the Bioshock demo is completed downloading on my desktop just yet, and havn't had a whole lot of time to play games the last few days (finals coming up) but so far so good. I had not previously tried 162.18.
-
Yeah...I experienced some crashes in CnC3 with 163.144.
Going to roll back to 162.18 -
yea 162.18 works perfectly. the only problem is that the nvidia control panel takes a while to load up. it's weird.
-
Sorry, but 7 pages is a bit too much to try to skim through, especially with side conversations.
Did anyone in here install XP on their 1520? Mine will be coming soon and I'd like to either do a dual boot, or have a 2nd HD for XP. I want to make sure there aren't any compatability issues with drivers. I saw quite a few on Dell's website, but I'm not sure if it is missing anything. -
So I got the 163.44 driver, and under device manager it shows the Graphic Card as NVIDIA G84-100. That's what it should be showing, right?(asking because it used to show as NVIDIA 8600GT with some weird number next to it...)
Tested with fs9, but didn't notice any performance increase or decrese, so I guess it's ok, but just wondering if I'm getting the most out of the drivers.. -
great thread... this is gonna help me when my lappy comes =D
-
163.44 will make lord of the rings online crash for a second but then it comes back on. using these drivers i get a 3300 3dmark06 score
-
Are these drivers gotten just by hitting update drivers or found online somewhere?
-
Not that it's a big difference, but I got 3368 with the 162.18 drivers and our specs are the same. Try those out instead and see what it'll do. -

I suggest using the 162.18 drivers. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13894 -
So, overall what's the best driver?
-
Hi,
Really is BAD of Dell to tweak cards soo much that you can't even install the latest from the gpu manufacturer's newest drivers. Couldn't get the Bioshock demo to run with Dell's crap. What's the point of buying a new discreet dx10 card but not being able to use it? I tried the 163.44 drivers, and they installed with the modded .inf-but lost aero-and can't figure out out get that back. Any help?
:confused2: -
Installed 163.44 drivers and they are perfect. Havent had any problems and bioshock plays like a gem.
-
From laptop video to go? If you don't mind, can you post the link to the one you used?
I tried and it wiped out Aero in Vista.
Thx -
So yeah that site..i dled the package, extracted it..replace the inf with the modded inf and then installed the drivers. Uninstall the old ones first though.
Dunno what happened to ur aero -
 Thx much,
I'll give it another shot!!! -
Kabeio,
THX SOO Much!!!
That worked out GREAT!
They installed fine, Aero and everything.
And it even bumped up my score in Vista.
Now time to play Bioshock!!
WOOHOO!!!
-
No worries mate. Enjoy bioshock
-
thx,
Running it with no probs now-after I got the drivers installed correctly.
Love that some of them on lv2g have the setup.exe in them still. Much easier than the device mangler method. -

I'm looking to update my drivers. Right now I just have the default drivers that came along with the 1520. I'm extremely new to updating the drivers this way on the laptop and am hesitant in doing so. Due to the fact that I don't want to mess up anything being that it's brand new and all. haha. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Looking for the best/stable drivers. I am currently playing Medal of Honor: Airborne and Battlefield 2. Eventually I'll be getting CS:S as well. So whichever works best for those games.
-
Just look at Kabeio's post a few back from here.
here's the link tho-
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14562
It's pretty simple for this one, cuz they have a setup.exe in the folder.
It's in laptop video to go, I advise reading their Quick Start guide to installing drivers, if you are not too familiar with it.
Basically, Dell takes Nvidia drivers and modifies them to their own internal specs, so you can't just go to the Nvidia site and grab a newer driver-it won't install. But go to this site and they have taken these drivers and modified the .inf file(see their FAQ's about what an .inf is-if you need to), so it will install. They may look like the same install package as nVidia, but go by their guides.
First-go to Microsoft and install their newest patch for Vista and games-
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105
then go to the LaptopVideotoGo forum link above.
1)dload their driver zip
2)unzip it
3)dload the modified inf file
4)replace the .inf file in the driver folder with the modded one.
5) uninstall the current Dell driver v. 104.33 crap(Vista will automatically install a generic vga driver.)
6) run the setup.exe in the folder ya dloaded
BINGO-the newest nVidia driver!!!
working great btw -

I noticed that you do not receive a WHQL certificate using a modified INF. Is this at all a concern? For warranties, etc.?
-
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
Also, where can I look to see that the new driver is installed. Secondly, I'm guessing I have to keep the folder that has the INF in it as well as all the other stuff that is on the Desktop..?
-
Some of the other driver versions on that site do have WHQL certs. Just that the link I sent you is the newest Nvidia driver out. It's still beta on their site. And as such, not WHQL.
-
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
What exactly does the WHQL represent and what if you don't have the WHQL cert?
-
look in device manager for driver installs.
Just go to start and type device manager in the bottom search bar and it will appear at the top. In device manager, it's listed as display adapter, just expand it (click on the plus sign to the left of it) and you'll see Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT. right click on that>properties>
driver tab. -
WHQL=Windows Hardware Quality Labs,
Microsoft wants every driver certified, but companies have to pay them to have their software certified. Back to your other question-yup keep that folder, thats where the driver files are located. I just make a folder and name it 1520 drivers, and keep it in my download folder.
-
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
I'm assuming it worked. The Driver Version is: 7.15.11.6344
-
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
What exactly happens if you don't have the WHQL cert for your driver?
-
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
Okay. So keep that folder. Is there a "Downloaded" folder anywhere already on the comp or did you make it yourself?
Also, at anytime can I revert back to the original drive by using that "roll back" thing? -
it's just a certification that MSFT has tested it for compatability with Windows and it meets their standards.
lol so they're sayin it prolly won't make Windows BSOD. yup that is the latest driver 163.44
-
Nate,
Click on your name in start menu, Vista opens a window with folders. Documents, pics, vids, etc. And there is one named Downloads. That's where I store my driver downloads and various other stuff -
 yup,
if ya don't like the driver you installed, then that's the button-roll back driver- to the previous one -
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
Ah. Okay. lol Sorry. I'm newer to Vista. Still familiarizing myself with the new interfaces. So thank you for baring with me.
Last thing, have you noticed quite a big difference using this newer driver version compared to the other ones? Any problems as of yet? -
yup your old 104.33 WHQL signed Dell driver is still in the o.s.- look here
C:\Dell\drivers and you'll see every Dell install package for your 1520 -
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
I'm sorry, as long as I totally don't uninstall what?
Yeah, I saw the message asking me if I wanted to delete the driver software when I was uninstalling the older driver version. -
NateTheGreat503 Notebook Consultant
I'm not seing the drivers folder when I got to C:\Dell\
