Hi, I have a DELL Precision M6400, after the crash of my CCTL Display I replace it with a LED Display (and the right cable). It worked for a couple of weeks but now I have the same ploblem described in the posts above. I can see the graphics but the LED backlight does not work. The strange think is that one time over ten the backlight works  !! With an external monitor everithink is OK. I have not find the fuse on my mobo but... this fuXXXing display sometimes works... so... is the fuse?
    ...some idea??

    THS

    PS:
sorry for my bad english

Anyone in the UK that could help me out with this? I just don't have the soldering skills to do something that small. I will of course pay for your time. :)

3amp fuse wire soldered over the top of the dead fuse worked a treat. Thanks for the info

I wanted to thank everybody for this thread, it really helped with a very confusing problem. Also, I did this on a Dell Inspiron 1546 and the fuse was on the opposite side of where the display plugs in.

I have to say you are a life saver.

I bypassed the fuse after the screen was replaced (Dell Inspiron 1545) to test and the screen finally came on.

Now have to brush up on my soldering skills and get this fixed.

    Thanks a million

What I did was melt the solder on the soldering iron, then layed it over the fuse.

    All is up and running

    Thanks again

Just wanted to let everyone else know that this solution worked for me. You saved me countless hours!

    Prerequisites:
    *Soldering Iron
*Copper wire strip just in case you solder other connections together
    *Flux
    *Solder
-All of these items can be purchased through Radio Shack (try eBay if there isn't one near you)
-Took me close to 12 mins, so be patient.

    Steps Taken:

    1. Remove Keyboard (you may need to remove thin metal protecting the board depending on how the size of your iron and the angle you need to reach it)
    2. Use FLUX and apply it to the fuse (F1)
    3. Solder off the Fuse
    4. Spit out a solder ball connecting the two points

Registered on this site just to type a quick-how-to :)
    Thanks again guys!

This thread was a life-saver for me so I thought I would add some additional info from my experience. It was a Dell 1545 like the OP. The laptop was dropped and the screen was broken, but the LED's were definitely still working. We got this as a replacement and when we hooked it up the LED's were not working. Following the methods in this thread we confirmed it was the fuse so we started the process of replacing it.

This is a pic of the original fuse: link It's the tiny chip with a "P" on it under the F1, as seen in other pictures in this thread.

This is the replacement fuse I got: LITTELFUSE - 0467003.NR - Surface Mount Fuse It is pretty much the exact size as the original.

Having never done soldering like this, I found this youtube clip very helpful: Surface Mount Soldering 101 I practiced on some old PC peripheral cards I had laying around first by removing and then re-attaching some of the tinier SMD parts.

Here is an after pic: link There's a bit of fuzz on it from me trying to clean off the extra flux with a cotton swab and alcohol.

Another after pic under a 20x loupe: link

I can't see how you could do this without magnification, but the loupe I had was hand-held and so wasn't useful. So I got these clip on magnifying lens. I didn't care for how they weighed my glasses down, so I clipped them onto the bill of my baseball hat and that worked perfect.

Anyway, we're back up and running thanks to all the contributors here so hopefully my info can help someone else.

    Hi Everybody,
(this is my first post to this site)

Right, I am a laptop repair technician (board level mainly)

I have seen loads of the Inspiron 1545 with the same issue. The main reason that the backlight doesn't work (usually after a screen has been replaced) is that a fuse on the motherboard (next to the LCD connector port on the motherboard) has blown. This is usually caused by people connecting the new screen/unplugging the LCD cable WITH THE BATTERY PLUGGED IN. (Big no no with LED screens especially).

To solve the issue, change the fuse.

    Cheers

    stupid laptops!!!!!

i have a sony with this same issue...

F1 IS NOT the right fuse!!!! (for sony's) it is actually on the backside of the motherboard (you need to take it fully out) and it is the fuse labeled " N written on it" i forget what F it was, F12? or something like that.... only fuse with an N (i checked the whole board looking for it)

Just registered to say thank you for this thread.

Wish I had found it last year when I had problems after changing an LED screen in a 1545. Best advice I found then was change the mboard....

Found it this time after changing a CCFL screen in a 1545. It worked fine for a few days then went dim again. Screen would start off bright then go dim.

Changed the cable and inverter and now it is permanently dim. :-(

Definitely not the screen as known good screens have the same issue.

I see the component on the left of the screen connector is labelled P on the CCFL mboard. Has anybody got experience of using this fix on a CCFL unit?

Maybe its not as "sensitive", but can still have the same failure. Tried the new inverter in a hurry, so maybe wasn't careful enough re battery etc.

    Hi all,

I have an inspiron 1545 with the same problem.

The screen would start off bright and start flickering and getting dimmer, but if I turned the laptop off and back on it would start off bright again and the same thing would happen.

When I opened it and reset all the connections, after this it was dim all the time.

However when I check the fuse with a multimeter it appears to be working (When I put the positive and negative together I get a reading of 0 ohms, when I put them on each end of the fuse I also get 0)

Should I bash on and try to solder it? or am I more likely to have a different problem.

    Cheers

It appears I'm facing the same dim LED screen issue with a client's Studio 1745. HOWEVER, the mainboard appears to be totally different than the ones previously shown, and I'm having trouble locating the proper fuse to check.

Update: Further reading indicates this is a LCD panel with LED backlighting, hence the lack of inverter and lack of fuse.

Blew my fuse replacing led with out removing battery
I have the letter H on my Sony Vaio fuse.
Talked to the guys at LittleFuse and he said my H fuse is 1A fuse not 3A

    Fuse chart here-

    http://www.littelfuse.com/data/en/Data_Sheets/467.pdf

Under - Part Marking System - bottom of pdf

My part was here instead of the 3 amp fuse

They were sold out so I bought a 50 pack on ebay of the littlefuse

    0467001.NR = 1A fuse "H"
0467003.NR = 3A fuse "P" (as seen in pdf chart)

Hope I have the right info here

    P.S. here is a list of the fuse's 467 series - here

Mach you letter from pdf chart to the amp code - then mach your amp code to the list of 467 fuses to "fuse current" - that is the replacement fuse you will need.

EDIT --- Opps The fuse was to small so I went to the 466 fuse instead....a little bit bigger fuse in size

I have a similar Sony Viao with backlighting issue I have been dealing with for over 6 months and finally got it fixed last night. Fuse with "N" labeled F17 is the fuse that i ran the bead of solder on (located on backside of motherboard where video cable connector aka LVDS connector is located). You are good to go :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Just remember that running a bead of solder instead of replacing the fuse doesnt protect the MB from a backlighting short!

    Hi

I have a dell inspiron 1545 with a broken LED backlight. I think my problem may be related to the problems in this thread, however I NEVER replaced my screen, and before this problem occured never even opened my laptop.
When I once started up my laptop, it was just black, no flickering, nothing..

I was able to find the F1 fuse on the motherboard, and I don't get a result when I try to read the resistance with my multimeter, so I think it's broken.

To be sure this is the problem, I bridged it and my backlight didn't come on. (I got some sparks while doing this on net power, probably wasn't a very good idea..)

    Thanks in advance

    RD

i managed to get work my backlight on my sony vaio laptop after 2 hours of removing mobo and sorder session, it caused by my fault to not remove the battery when i replace my broken screen. if i could not find this pages, i will not sort out the problem. Thank you a lot. Sony's have an N signed fuse with f16 marking on the other side of the screen plug so you have to remove everything to get under the mobo.

Thank you people , have a nice day :) :D

Lesson Learned: Never Change something with Battery on or power plugged :(

Hey guys! This is my first time posting on this wonderful forum! I have a dell inspiron 1318 and I think i'm having similar problem! My problem started ever since after I dropped my laptop, but I didn't break it. It used to work fine even after I dropped it, but now when I turn it on, I can see the things but no backlight. Here's what I have tried so far: 1) I replaced the lcd with one from another laptop, everything works fine(which leaves me to think that the fuse is still good :) )... 2)I put back the old screen, I can still see things but NO BACKLIGHT(I don't think it's the inverter because I was using it with the other screen from the other laptop). The point i'm trying to make is, I don't have that kind of money to purchase a new lcd and my friend told me it could be the lamp for the backlight:confused2: Im so confuse when he say the "lamp!" Is that true I could replace the lamp with a new one. If yes, what can I do at this point? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated! thanks in advanced guys!

i think it is impossible to change only the led lamp of the screen, you will surely damage something.

I replaced my LED screen on my 1545 with battery in and neither screen works at all now. Not even a monochrome picture with no backlight - nothing. Would the same fix apply if my screens are completely blank now or could mine be a different issue?
    Thanks

I have found a solution to this Problem for DELL STUDIO Laptops. (1535 MODEL). MY STUDIO MODEL DOES NOT USE AN LED SCREEN SO I FOUND NO F1 FUSE.

My backlight has failed. I still get a faint signal to the screen but it is dark.

I replaced the bulb. I also replaced the Inverter chip. This might fix your problem but it didn't fix mine.

I DID NOT FIND AN F1 FUSE on the STUDIO MODELS. I fused a different chip which was VISIBLY DAMAGED. Disasemble your laptop so the monitor cable is visible. The fuse is just below the monitor cable plug in. See Pics:

This beetle looking chip (six legs) was visibly damaged. I fused it with a soldering iron. It WORKED FOR ME> BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT. LOTS OF SMOKE AND SPARKS AT FIRST. COMPUTER SHUT DOWN and I thought I lost my computer. I GOT LUCKY AND the Fused chip works. It was a last resort since I am traveling abroad and needed a solution fast.

I have a Dell 1545. The fuse on the top of the mobo, by the moniter socket, is good. There was a mention of a fuse on the back that went out. Could a screenie posted of that fuse? Any other ideas. The computer works OK, boots up fine, it's just the back-light issue. Thanks.

    Hi,

I am using Dell Inspiron N4010. I am facing the same issue of backlight failure. Before this I tried to find dead fuse on mother board but failed... but on the circuit board behind the screen I found two fuses F1 and F2. When testing with multimeter F1 fuse shows 0 ohm which I believe is working and F2 shows no change in reading.

Can it be blown fuse (F2) which is causing LED back light failure?

    Please help..

I have acer aspire 7738g. I tried 3 led screens and only on one i can see dim background with no backlight. On external screen everything is fine. But the thing is if i put my old broken screen i can see backlight screen but no letters or anything, only backlight white. So, do i have the same problem or? And where on acer aspire 7738g can i find that fuse and test it?
Please help, thank you very much in advance.

    Hi,
I have a Dell 1525 LCD laptop, and have solved the issue.
The fuse beside the LCD ribbon blows, except on this laptop, it is the F2 fuse, 3A, 32V. I bridged it and now the screen lights, looking for a proper repair now to to properly replace the fuse.

Thanks for all the help, good to know this fix works for Dell 1525 also.

For users of other laptops, just check the fuses around the socket for the LCD wire on the motherboard. The fuses will be tiny, like 2mm long, the code beside them will either begin with F, PF, or maybe P (PF stands for pico fuse)

I have a Dell Inspiron 1546 with the same LED Backlight problem after screen replacement. Looking at the photo on this thread there is NO fuse NEAR the LCD connector at all and it is known that Dell as most manufacturers often change their board revisions.

My question is where is the fuse on a Dell Inspiron 1546 specifically because it is not near the LCD connector where you would expect to find it .

Any help appreciated - apparently the 1546 is the US version of the 1545 yet the boards are totally differet - hmmmm

Hello everyone, Ive got the same issue, I stupidly replaced the LED screen on an asus laptop with the battery in. I've followed this post and a couple of others and tried to locate the right fuse to solder but I cant seem to locate it anywhere.

here are some pics of both sides of the board near the screen connector cable.

as you can see there are no F anything markings, nor are there any markings like that anywhere on the board.

any help would be amazing as I've tried everything I can think of!

    Hi All,

We have had a customers Inspiron 1750 come into the workshop for a replacement screen.

After replacing the screen, we had the dim screen problem. At first we thought it was the screen cable so changed it out for a new one, but to no avail; same problem.

We have done lots of VGA repairs on notebooks and have only heard of this problem - never actually come across it so i guess we've been lucky.

Anyhow, following the excellent advise offered on this forum we replaced the fuse with a slightly larger slow burning 3 amp fuse and hey presto - its perfect again ;)

Many thanks to you guys who actually took the time to document your findings and for sharing it with the rest of the world.

If you have this problem, live in the UK., have maybe replaced your screen / cable and would like this repair undertaken then please get in touch; i can recommend the perfect (cheap) technician.

    Thanks

    Hello,
I have the same problem. Screen is very dim. External monitor works fine.
I disassembled laptop and see that something is blown.
    Is it Fuse?

I have the same problem with my studio 1745, I replaced a broken screen and now the display is all dim. I read the replies about the blown fuse but my MB looks completely different to the pictures and I'm unable to find the fuse. Is this fix relevant to my laptop and if so where can I find the fuse?

you should remove the cable from the main board when you change out the LCD.

    1. Remove battery and ac power adapter
    2. Press and hold Power button for 20 seconds
    3. gain access to the LVDS cable (typically one has to remove the keyboard and palm rest)
    4. pull up to remove cable from MB
    5. Change LCD cable on screen and MAKE SURE that the connector is firmly in place.
    6. after you install cable to LCD plug in LVDS cable to mainboard.

Dell 1545 here, dropped, smashed screen. Works fine as a headless unit, decided to replace the screen but alas the back light does not work as per others here.

Replaced the F1 (no problem with SMD stuff here, I do it for a living) but still no backlight. The fuse was okay, but I thought I'd replace it anyhow just in case it was misbehaving under load. I've heard that there's another fuse in the system (F8) which might be the culprit but try as I might I cannot locate the little beast. Anyone want to give me a clue?

(excuse the ball-blob on the end of the fuse, normally will clean that up before scrubbing the flux off the board as well)

I think I'm doomed - found a spot of corrosion going on on the PCB near where the ATi chip is (other side though)
