    Hey Slapaddict--

I also had to go to school without my laptop, but I just changed the shipping address to the one at my school, and they were fine with that. I think that it might be worth it, given the great reviews this laptop has gotten, even if it means spending a week or two without your laptop.

I was thinking about doing that except I just visited my school and went to the bookstore. They have one d630 in stock. Everything is the same as mine except the hard drive is only 80 gigs 7200rpm (but i have a 500 external so no problem), the screen is only wxga, however it has vista business. It is 1500 so it's 100 more expensive. I'm not sure if I should go for this or just wait. They also had a sony sz with similar specs and it looked reallly nice. The screen was amazing on it, but it was 2000. I'll probably wait till the 11th. If my laptop doesn't ship I might give the bookstore a call and see if they still have it. Thanks for the advice though. I think you're right, I should try to get this laptop since it seems to be top of the line.

well sunday is winding down and my laptop is still in the build stage. Do you guys think there is any chance my laptop will ship by tuesday or should I just abandon hope and move on.

You never know. Not a surprise they didn't change their production status over the weekend, since they probably weren't working. I still have hope they'll ship mine by Wednesday...

I sent them an angry letter, saying that I was in charge of purchasing laptops for my department, and that I was not impressed with their service (especially the fact that they shipped people who recently ordered quicker than mine). So far I got a $100 rebate, but the real test is to see if they ship it soon...

Wow, we are in exactly the same boat. Just so you know, you can change the delivery address to your school instead of what I presume was your school. All you have to do is call/send an e-mail. Besides not actually giving me a laptop, they've been pretty responsive...

yeah i've done that. they change my shipping address to school, and bumped me to next day shipping for free. (changing the shipping address incurred a higher tax though, i guess that was unavoidable)

I've been watching this forum for a long time, but never posted until now.

Today I really got pissed with Dell and I want to share the bad experience with you. I guess it' nothing new to all of you, almost everyone on the forum passed through this kind of things before me.

I've ordered a Dell Latitude D630 (see my signature) on 8/9. The first ESD was on 9/10. I've called Dell and found out that the CPU and the WXGA+ LCD screen were on back-order immediately after the order entered in production.

After two weeks of waiting, I've spoken with a CSR on Chat, but the CPU and the screen were still on back-order. I explained to the CSR that I really need to get this laptop on time (9/10), because I'm going to leave United States, after staying for a 4 months of training here. The CSR assured me that the order will be expedited and I think a few notes were made on the order for that, but I guess this small "favour" didn't help me at all in order to get the laptop at the first ESD.

Last week, on tuesday (9/4), I've had another conversation with a CSR who told me that only the screen was still on back-order. On friday, I've had another chat session with a CSR who said that there were no more parts back-ordered for me. I was really happy and hoped that the order will ship this week, maybe some days after the initial ESD.

However, on Monday (9/10), when the order was supposed to be shipped, I've called again the Dell order status number to find out that my laptop is still stucked in the insaneous "build" stage. I immediatelly chatted with a CSR who told me that the screen is still in back-order!!! Great job, Dell. One month of wating and you can't get a damn stupid LCD screen. And you tell me that you have all the parts for my order, but in fact you're still missing something. Every CSR has his own version about the progress of my order. No comment.

Needles to say, all CSRs that I've questioned are unable to tell me when the screen will be available for my order. No one knows anything when I ask about the precise delivery date. Everything is uncertain, flows in the air. They'be been giving me un uncertain ESD2 of 9/17, but the order status under my account is not updated yet.

I'm very angry on Dell and I don't know what to do. I really want this laptop, which is not a cheap one, as you can see from my signature. But from what I see Dell doesn't care about my money, they already have too much money. What bothers me is that some people, with the same screen as me (WXGA+), get their laptops in one week, altough I've ordered before them and waited for a month. Now that's a good customer care, Dell.

What do you think, is it worth to give Dell a second chance and wait for another week or just cancel the order, buy an Apple Macbook and never hear again about Dell?

I am thinking about cancelling my order and getting a Macbook as well. I can't blame Dell though, I ordered on 8/21 with ESD 9/20. Nothing has changed. I just wish that I had done a little more research on shipping time. I have two weeks before I will need it though, so I will give them a shot, but if my shipping date changes, I will almost certainly cancel.
I wish I had known earlier though, because I would have bought the Macbook from the Apple store and spent the last month getting used to it.
Anyhow, I talked to the rep and asked about delays, but this is before I heard specifically that there were delays on the D630. I thought that by going with a color-less unit, I would be better off. guess not. last night I looked at my school's Dell premier page and the configured a d630 minus the WXGA+ screen and the ESD was 9/19....

    Dell Latitude D630
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7300
    14.1 inch WXGA+ LCD
    2GB RAM, 2 DIMMs
    128MB NVIDIA
    120GB HDD, 7200RPM
    8X DVD+/-RW Drive
    FingerPrint Reader
Intel 4965 WLAN (802.11a/g/n) mini Card
    Vista Bluetooth Module
    Vista Business
    6-Cell Battery

    Ordered 8/21
    ESD 9/20
other option: Macbook, but I will take suggestions

I was shopping around before for similar laptops and decided it was between a macbook, sony sz or cr, or a hp dv2500t. The sony's are a bit pricey and come with a ton of bloatware, but there are guides to do a clean install. the lenovo t61 and maybe the toshiba tecra m8 are also similar to the d630 but I've read bad things about their (lenovo and toshiba) tech and customer support.

Well it's supposed to ship today and it's still in the build stage. No surprise though.

some GOOD NEWS however, i just called the order info number and mine has moved from BUILD to BOXING!!

it was the wxga+ screen and video adapter that they said was holding mine up. so hopefully some of you will get yours soon too.

mine is supposed to ship today but went from build to kitting? Isn't it kitting then build? Or did they get the rest of my parts today so it went back to kitting? My esd hasn't changed but I really doubt it will ship.

Well as close as our core configs are, i had fingerprint reader and bluetooth. and the fact you ordered 0n 8/5 that gives me some hope that i am getting close to the light at the end of the tunnel.

i do not think i am going to make my second esd of 9/13 but it gives me hope. I guess it is easier for me to deal with out my new laptop, i never intended to have it in time for school to start as i ordered on 8/12 and school started on 8/13. of course that dosnt keep me from getting frustrated my laptop is not here yet.

well the csr said the delay on my order was the wxga+ screen. They then moved the edd to 9/12, tomorrow. It was a nice surprise but I don't know how realistic it is. Within the last 6-8 hours it has gone from build to kitting to testing. So I have to admit I'm very happy and I hope all of you guys get your computers soon too. Thanks for all of the input too.

I'm in "boxing", with an EDD of tomorrow. I guess they're planning on pumping a bunch out over the next few days. FINALLY! My current laptop (4 years old) is like a f-ing old car... you have to try turning it on a bunch of times before it works, which is only the beginning of it's problems. It'll be nice to have a functioning laptop once more!

hey this is from the dell order stages wiki, it might be helpful:
Boxing: This stage is misleading. The automated support line will tell you this is when you are being prepared to ship. In reality, more is happening. Usually your laptop was built outside of the US in Malaysia or somewhere similar. In the boxing stage, your completed laptop is boxed up in a smaller box, then taken to an airport where it is shipped to the US where it can then be boxed up with your accessories and shipped. Generally this stage takes AT LEAST 3 days. Reports lately have said four days is normal, mine actually shipped in 3.5 days of "boxing". Some customers have reported being stuck in the boxing stage for weeks. Other customers have called dell, asked a rep, and found out that their laptops weren't even in the "boxing" stage at all even though the automated line says they were (see note). It has been suggested as well <by surfasb 8/15/07> that your laptop could be sitting on a pallet waiting for enough pallets to be filled to justify a plane ride to the USA. With the recent shortage in parts, this may be the very thing that is delaying your shipment. It is obvious that this stage is the most vague of them all. How long you will be in the "boxing" stage seems to be undeterminable at this point. If your luck holds, it won't be more than 3-4 days. Even though this stage seems the longest, it usually means that your laptop is built, and in a box on a pallet somewhere. You can breathe easier that all your parts are installed at this point and it is only travel time that is ahead of you.
Note: It has been mentioned (and confirmed by at least one person on this board) that people who have called the Dell reps have been told that their laptop wasn't in boxing at all, and that it was still being built. My guess is that they (meaning the non-english speaking reps) are confusing "build" with "In Production" (because the "build" stage is a sub-category of "In Production") and that your laptop is in fact in the boxing stage as the website told you. These reps likely don't speak the greatest amount of english anyway, so watch the website (seems to be the most accurate, even if it is delayed a few hours), and call the 800 number (1-800-433-9014, only works in the US I am told) for more detailed updates of the order status page on the web.

Also I just checked my laptop and the new ship date is 9/18 with a edd of 9/19. 5 Hours ago it was an edd of 9/12. I didn't know next business day shipping took a week to do.

    Thanks for explaining that slapaddict...

My new estimated ship date: 9/19

They made me electronically sign a thing on their website, explaining that new FTC regulations required my consent to this ultra-late delivery. If I didn't sign it, they said they'd cancel the order. I'd suggest everyone interested in keeping their orders check out their Order Status pages.

... I was definitely tempted not to sign...

My order just entered the boxing stage. So with a esd of 9/18...it'll be in boxing for a week i guess, unless it ships early, but considering how things are going, I doubt it.

Light at the end of the tunnel here guys. Just Remember Good Things come to those who wait. I think from seeing messing with my little Brothers D620 it will have been well worth the wait. i am just ecstatic that there is any progress at all.

dell really should change there status system the whole part about being in build while there is a delay and then going into kitting and then back into build is really misleading and frustrating.

they just need a waiting state.

Well i got delayed until the 20th, but since it was in boxing as of last night i expect it didnt make last nights flight. i called dell and they gave me a 100 dollar credit. so i am thinking more likely it will be here Monday or Tuesday. not bad for having to wait an extra weekend.

Realistically, speaking should I even expect to get mine next week if my shipping date has always been 9/20. I have zero room for a delay. If I don't have it next weekend, I cancel.

My D630 with the T7300, WXGA+, and NVS 135m was ordered on 8/16 with an ESD of 9/11. On the 11th this was delayed to the 18th, but as of a few minutes ago it is in boxing. When I talked to a CS rep about a week ago (from sales, seemed to know what she was talking about) she told me that systems ordered around mine would be getting built "by the 14th." Mine was and I hope everyone else waiting gets their system soon!

haha my d630 has almost the same specs. My first esd was the 11th, and my second is the 18th too, but I ordered on august 11th. I'm in boxing now too. Seems like a lot of people are waiting on theirs.

Yes! Mine's shipping. Thus ending a month and week of waiting for my laptop.

If everything goes alright, then I should have it by tomorrow. Saturday at the latest.

    Hi ericcumbee,

Where do you live (I mean which country)? Because I find it at least a bit odd that I have order about a full month before you and my laptops are still in fu*** preproduction.

On your order status page, click on your tracking number to get the real info from DHL. They won't supply you with the real shipment date on the Dell website, but they should be able to on the DHL one.

my page still says not shipped. vivanshah- your order should get there unless they missed the shipment going out or something and it ships friday. Since dhl doesn't work weekends, the next business day would be the 18th.

I called at midnight CST last night I was still in the Production:Build stage. At 6AM I was boxing. Did I miss something? Will it go back to kitting, testing, etc? With these screen issues, I'd really be upset if I missed out on testing.

look at my sig and see how quickly mine moved. they can pump them out pretty quick when they actually have the parts. You probably just missed the testing phase.
