I've had many people ask me through the forum and PMs as to how to get to the recommended by Dell for University discounts and what they are. It is different from the regular University discount, which gives a 12% discount on any computer. The Recommended for University discount gives a massive $650 discount for the new XPS M1330 and a $200 coupon good on any Inspiron notebook. The base configuration is as follows:
To get to this deal, follow these steps:
1. Go to www.delluniversity.com
2. Click on the black bar that says "Get Started!"
3. Enter your info: Classification (what association you have with the university - currently attending, faculty, prospective student, alumni, parent), School name (click on the state and then the school name on the select your school page), and enter you .edu email address (for example - [email protected] [not my real email ID]). For the best deal, or if your school does not offer the M1330, follow these instructions:
4. Click the "Submit" button, and then on the new page that comes up, click the "<School Name> Discount Page" link
5. In a new window, a Premier.Dell.com page will open. It will contain some information about the Personal Purchase program, and two links that say "Start Shopping". The top one is for special offers on computers recommended by Dell for University students. The second gives you essentially the same thing as the Home/Office store, except with an additional 12% discount for the Personal Purchase program. Click the first one.
6. Scroll down until you see the link to the "XPS 1330 - World's Thinnest Notebook - New!!!" featured at $1299. This is the one with the $650 discount. Click Customize to pick your specific configuration, and then add to cart and checkout. Of course, you can look at the other laptops featured there as well, but they are not very good deals afaik.
I hope this helps!

Nice information! Rep up and 5 star thread! =)
-
Vivek - Different schools offer different bundles. Some school do not offer the M1330 at all. Others offer the D620, D420, or D820, or Inspirons, or some don't offer any special bundle discount.
-
edit: Sirius suggests this may not be available at all schools. I guess we need a survey. Anyone check wustl.edu? -
Not seeing it for me. My school only offers a couple deals in Latitudes.
If you could take a screenshot of the page you're talking about with the link, I could be more sure I'm not just missing this. -
I just tried with my alum.quinnipiac.edu address and get a preconfig D630 deal ($1400 Loaded) so I think Sirius is right.
-
My school only has the 1420, 1520, D630 and D8(whatever). Plus i get a better deal through regular shopping, except on the 1520
-
it isn't available for all schools, but the trick is:
select prospective student from the drop down menu, and just have ANY .edu email in hand.
You don't need to be from that school.
For example, vivek with a washington.edu email can list himself as a prospective student and access IOWA's discount pages.
Go to the first Drake link in Iowa, for the best deals on M1330
There you go guys, there's always a way around an obstacle! -
Well isn't that amazing.
Edit: Unfortunately, if you're already registered as a student at another university, you're SOL. There wouldn't be an easy way to get a .edu e-mail address, would there? -
It worked for me, but the bundle at Berkeley comes with a laser printer.

It doesn't work for me...
Do I have to re-register? I can't get back to that page. I registered a few days ago as a prospective student with my real email address, but I can't get to that page you're talking about... -
You don't have to access the page through the email, you just click "click here to see Drake's Discount page" -
So I have to use a fake .edu email address and stuff?
Wouldn't that make this illegal? -
I'm not talking about through the e-mail, but AFAIK you need to register as a prospective member of a school to see their discount page. -
tremonti22, you just make up an email address with .edu in it. That's all.
Also, can these discounted M1330s be customized at all? I'd like to upgrade a few things... -
Oh, shoot, I'm dumb.
-
Hey Sirius,
I did exactly as you said and accessed Drakes page. I cant believe they listed the M1330 at $1164!!! That's 2GB of ram too. Thanks for the info! I may have to cancel my 1420 -
Yeah, it's cheap. I ordered one as well.
-
Here is a quick guide i made if you really clueless...
-
This Discount is Awesome! Too bad they dont have my school on there but theres ways around that
. NOw i Can afford a 1330
-
click on recommended bundles of the Drake page, it will lead you to a really good M1330 deal. (the best one that I'm aware of)
-
Hmm...Upgrading it still makes it a little costly.
But anyway...How legal is this? -
No possible way to take the printer off huh?
-
However, if you have a quote... -
it's more legal than the Meyers EPP bull****.
How do I know?
because you're listing yourself as a prospective student.
To make 100% sure that it's legal, just don't make up a stupid email address. It's not hard to find a friend with a school email address that is unregistered at Dell. -
The first order number will be your XPS system, the second order number will be the Printer.
Call Dell customer care at 1800-624-9897
and give them the order number to the PRINTER, not the XPS SYSTEM.
Tell them you want to cancel the order. They will ask why, just tell them you didn't want it anymore.
They will refund you the cost of the printer, roughly 95 bucks. -
Eh, I need a printer for next year anyway. I hope this stays up for at least a little while, so I can see this in person before I pull the trigger. Any hopes of deleting this thread so we're not found out? Ha...
-
Also...I found this link:
http://www.dell.com/drake
Same thing, but you don't have to make up an email address...Hmmm...Could this be considered a mistake on Dell's part and we can call it legal? -
btw, here is what I was referring to when I said two order numbers.
Then after you cancel:
-
Hey, does anyone know if these notebooks come with fingerprint scanners?
-
Sirius,
You already cancelled your printer? Youre fast. -
The option isn't listed through the Drake site, but you could probably call Dell up right after your order goes through with the order number and have them add it - say it wasn't an option when you bought it and nothing more - and you should be good to go. Right?
-
Vivek - I'm so sorry for hijacking your thread... -
HOlY ****, YOU CAN GET THIS CUSTOMIZED AW$ESOME fOR $1500 w/ that $200 discount
-
I don't see it on the Drake page...
-
-
i can get this with 2.0 GHz, 2GB, and 160GB 7200rpm for $1330 w/ coupon. That rocks i wish my college had that, id jump on it.
-
Its still good at $1530 and within my range
-
are you referring to the discount or coupon? The bundle package selections do not allow coupons to be applied to the cart.
You don't need to be a part of Drake University to get this deal. Jump on it -
this is the same as EPP discount, no difference.
-
It's out there, take advantage of it. -
Man I was goin jump on but my d630 just shipped yesterday!
-
-
Still at $1530 fully loaded for me, its a great deal
-
So has anyone made the move and placed their order on this deal?
-
Also in addition to any one having placed an order, has any one placed an order and called about adding the biometric fingerprint reader?
-
Anyone who calls, let's not get this ruined for the rest of us, please...
-
-
I agree with Sirius, if you are listing yourself as a 'prospective student' you're not lying. Anybody can be a prospective student. Of course I just placed an order using this amazing deal, so I need to appease my own conscious - but still, I'm starting gradschool and I would consider Drake, ergo I am a prospective Drake student.
Hey Sirius, how long did it take for the order numbers and confirmation? The "Thank you for your recent purchase with Dell. It has been received and is being reviewed" is the only place I could see a hold up, assuming there is a monkey at Dell HQ reviewing every order placed. -
People keep mentioning Drake -- but are there any other universities with equal or better discounts? Time to search! Who has looked? I think someone mentioned Berkeley.
