    Hi,
I ordered mine 2 days ago with the dell wifi G card but I plan to replace it by an intel 5300. Does anyone know if the studio 1747 is compatible with the intel 5300? (in other words: if it has 3 antennas I suppose)

FYI, they sell the part for Bluetooth for $40, and it plugs into the PCI-E slot on the back of the laptop.

I think they only have 2 antenna but 5300 should work. I will find out this weekend, going to get the laptop tomorrow.

Btw, I ordered it on Nov 27th and was supposed to get it on 12/18. Fedex tried to deliver today.

I'm just got my 1747! I've yet to open it. Curious as to whether I'll be experiencing any of the 'clicking' since I got the 500G too. We'll see.

Hey guys, i've had my 1747 for a couple days now and wanted to give some of my thoughts.

First of all, the screen. I got the 1080p RGBLED. I have still been using a CRT monitor for my desktop and have never owned an HD anything. But this thing is gorgeous. Very crisp and clear and BRIGHT. No stuck or dead pixels. There is something with the colours for sure, i do see a bit of a red tint to everything as mentioned previously, and skin tones sometimes look a bit off. But the key for me is... this is no big deal. It doesn't bother me nearly as much as i was worried it would. It's a minor annoyance and i hope some calibration can improve it a bit. All colours otherwise really do pop though, it's a very vibrant screen, regardless of how accurate colour reproduction is.

-Really glad i got the backlit keyboard. It dims down when you're not pressing keys, and is very unobtrusive in general. Really helps in the dark.

-Build quality is solid. It feels like it could be a bit sturdier, but is definitely sturdy enough.

-I got Midnight Blue. It's rubberized, and it looks nice. No complaints, but i think i probably would have liked the glossy Black Chainlink better. Personal preference and no big deal, it definitely isn't ugly.

-This is QUIET. keep in mind this is my first laptop, but i was expecting it to be much, much louder from what i had been reading. I can't even tell there's any ventilation going on at all. I haven't kicked it up to the max fan levels though yet, i don't think.

-Temperatures are totally fine. I haven't done any measurements or really pushed the machine yet, but just browsing the web, watching videos, etc, i had it in my lap for hours without feeling even a tiny bit uncomfortable. The touchpad is the spot that gets the warmest on the top and it's just that... a bit warm. Will update when i push the system harder.

-Speakers are ok. Maybe i was expecting way more, but they're not that great. They are acceptable, and the addition of the subwoofer is nice, but don't expect anything mindblowing. Don't get me wrong, they are definitely good enough.

-They keyboard feels really good to type on. There is obvious flex when you push down in the middle, but you can't notice it otherwise and it poses no problem.

-Windows 7 is great so far. This is my first time using it and i have no complaints.

That's all i can think of right now. Like i said, i haven't pushed the system to its limits or done any benchmarks yet, but i am definitely very happy with my purchase so far. A lot of my fears were put to rest. If i were going to buy a laptop in the future, i would get a 15 inch for sure, but that's just a matter of preference. This beautiful 17 inch screen will certainly have its advantages and this will make a great desktop replacement multimedia centre like i wanted it to be.

Anyone have any specific questions or anything i'd be glad to help.

People often overlook these good deals, and configurations.

On the Dell web sight...put your mouse over the "Latops & Netbooks" tab, and then choose "Popular Laptop Deals". When that screen loads in, you'll see all kinds of deals. There's a Studio 17 in the "Large Screen Laptop Deals."

Speak to a rep and try haggling as I've just ordered one today from Dell UK and I've just paid £710 for a 1747 with standard 900p screen, 4gb, 500gb, i7 720 and backlit keyboard.

I think I got a good deal but this is off the back of me ordering another laptop from them a week or so ago.

That said I may cancel the order as I've just been given an estimated delivery date of 02/02/2010 which is nearly 8 weeks away which is a long time.

Has anyone ordered one recently and had it delivered to see what the actual timescales were like? If so did you have a long EDD that got revised quickly?

Is there a delay on any specific parts?

I think you already know my story but I ordered the 6th and had an EDD of 1/4/09 which was revised in about 4 days to 12/15.

If I receive the order on the 15th I will let you know.

That means that there's a bit of hope that the date will be revised but my EDD is a month on from yours. I'll monitor over the next few days and possible cancel if it looks like it'll take a very long time.

Is the 1333MHz memory significantly better than the 1066MHz memory or will you not really see much of a benefit with it?

That would be nice if it was true. I just want to point out 2 things -
    1. The rep specifically told me installing the bluetooth card myself would void the warranty.
    2. I've read that the bluetooth card is not simply installed into a PCI-E slot on the bottom (I assume you mean bottom rather than back?) of the laptop. Rather, it's installed in some terrible location that involves removing the keyboard. I don't know myself - that's just what I've read. The install price is certainly consistent with it being in a difficult location.

I just looked at the service manual and there is a bit involved to install it. But it looks pretty easy. Here's what you have to do to install it:

    Remove the battery
    Remove the center control cover
    Remove the keyboard
    Remove the media controls board
    Remove the palm rest

And the manual says: Damage due to servicing that is not authorized by Dell™ is not covered by your warranty.

    Don't forget holidays are coming.
A lot of companies are going in low production mode from around the 20th of december until 5th of January. So a bit longer EDD are normal.
Anyhow Dell usually take a margin on their estimates. So probably you'll get it sooner than the EDD says.
Some people even said that the EDD consulted by phone is more correct than the one shown on the site (in a positive way).

Ok, looks like 80% that I will buy this one, 20% I will go for the M15x.

At the moment, there is no RGB led option in UK for the DS17, how much difference is there compared to the other screen? I have been currently using a very old Inspiron so any screen will be a welcome improvement, but I am thinking will I regret it should the RGB led option come up after I purchased it.

Secondly, I guess I would be best to buy an SDD seperately - I do like the DS17 has 2 hard drive bays.

Thirdly, is there any technology coming by January/Feb time, which is something to look forward to? I heard of arrandale, but will it outperform these i7's? I am not too interested in those top end graphics card, as the games I would play would not require more than 4650.

Lastly, when is it usually the best price? Currently the base price for the i7 model, is at £798, has been for last 2 weeks I believe, this is with 4gb 1333mhz ram, non-backlit keyboard, 900p screen, 500gb HDD and the 4650. Would I be looking at it getting better anytime soon?

I can't answer on this one. But based on the comments on the forum the RGB led screen is superb and the standard screen above average. So it's up to you if you want top of the notch or just a good screen.
Maybe someone else can give some more value-adding comment here?

Me too, but beware Dell support couldn't tell me if I could buy the appropriate hdd cage seperately (because they charge too much for the 2xHDD option) or say the price. There's a lot of chance if you order the studio 17 with one hdd, that the second hdd slot will be without the hdd cage and you won't be able to install you ssd then!

If Intel can keep release date promises the arrandale i3-i5-i7's should be available first quarter of 2010. And off course all depends if Dell decides to insert these in their products directly or at a slower rate...
Technically the arrandale's are less energy-hungry, have graphics integrated in the chip (correct me if I'm wrong), and are dual-core.
Difficult to say which one is better, depends on what programs you're be using. But for the mass both are almost equal.
More info on wikipedia ( link) or on the numerous threads about it on this forum.

Last, the old rule: need it now, buy it now. Need it later, buy it later.

Promotions always change with Dell. Rarely there are better promotions. Most of the time it's the same advantages in another promotion package.
Just go for the package you like. If I'm not wrong in Europe it's free 15 month antivirus and free upgraded guarantee at the moment. And of course the usual 5% coupon ;)

So I just opened it - and first impression - Jesus, it's huge. Deceptively huge. I think I need to buy a new backpack to fit it in.

The Chainlink Black design is awesome. In my opinion anyways.

Opening it up, I realized the speaker covers came off and were offset a lit. It's only held together by some adhesive glue. Meh. A little bit of a letdown.

Touchpad is huge. Could be huger for a laptop this size, but that's just me.

When I'm tying the laptop feels warm to the touch - but not hot.

More to come as I figure ish out.

mine was mispositioned too but after a few days, when the laptop got a bit warm, the glue got a bit weak and i could get it on its place without a problem. no problems since

you want the touchpad to be even huger then this?!?
i'm hitting it quite often when tipping on the keyboard... it could be a bit smaller to be honest >_>

I'm just trying to be helpful - fyi, it may be impossible for you to cancel your order. Dell likes to refuse to let you make changes or even cancel pretty quickly after you place your order. You would need to call and check, but I know people are told that they have to wait for the computer to arrive, then send it back in order to cancel. Despite the estimated delivery date being weeks out, Dell wouldn't let me add a bluray drive to my order, personally. Do I think their jerks for doing this? Yes, definitely. But just wanted to let you know.

If you can cancel, I know it's the blue screen backing that's been the holdup on lot of orders. From the sounds of it, mine would have taken 2 or 3 weeks longer with the blue screen backing than with the chainlink black I ordered.

This is interesting information, and I appreciate you sharing it.

However, you're talking about dissassembling half the laptop - your definition of "easy" must be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay different than mine! lol :p

IS the new updated Studio 17 with the upgraded 1920x1080i RGB LED screen a touchscreen?

Does anyone think a touchscreen on a laptop is even useful? At least on a tablet pc you can turn the screen and put it face down to use it.

    Thoughts?

You're right. What I should have said is that it is easier than I thought it would be but much harder for someone that isn't used to taking apart a laptop.

I haven't seen the RBG screen. I have the 900p and I love the resolution of it. It is a very clear screen but the viewing angle on it is a problem. I'm not sure if it is the same on all since I'm thinking there is a problem with mine. The casing around the edges of my screen are all loose. I don't know if it is a defect in the build or in the molding of the new OPI designs. Mine is going to go back. The strip around the webcam pulls out and snaps back in around when you push on it. There is a gap between it and the screen.

With the screen angled to get the best picture in the middle and bottom of the screen the top inch is too dark and pulling it forward washes out the bottom. I really think it is a defect in the build.

Support won't be able to tell you which part. I went through the same thing with my 1720. The easiest way is to wait until someone posts the part numbers needed. Sales won't even know what you are looking for without a part number. I ended up ordering the second drive for the 1720 from Dell and it came with the caddy. Since I had the part number for the caddy the parts department was able to verify that they where included with the drive they sent. It was cheaper for me than ordering from 2 different places. Since I'm in Alaska there isn't an option for cheap shipping. I think it was around $17 for the caddy alone.

    For parts you call 1-800-357-3355.

If it uses the same caddy as the 1735/37 then it is this part:
    http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/...etail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=341-7101

Only $10.99. They don't have any parts up for the 1747 yet.

    1) Not sure, i'm usually plugged in and don't have time to test it. On "power saver" mode with the battery at 95% it estimates 3h10min of battery life.

    2) It's pretty heavy. I would get a 15 inch of smaller if you plan on carrying it around a lot. But it's not crazy heavy or anything. Probably 8-10 lbs.

    3) The laptop stays cool. You can feel the warmth under the touchpad and keyboard, and under the laptop itself, but it is nowhere near hot or uncomfortable. The fans are quiet too. (note: i haven't gamed on it yet, but have pushed it hard with benchmarks). Not sure on power throttling, i'm curious about that myself.

    4)

I think you can get the 1080p screen as a touch screen. I have one that isn't. I think it would be relatively useless, to me at least.

I opened up the 1747 and the 1735. The caddies and the connectors are different. It is also different from the 1720. So Dell changes the caddy with each model. They will eventually add it to the site linked above.

There are only 2 antennas threaded for the wireless card. So if you plan on upgrading you will need to take the laptop apart to add the 3rd.

I removed the battery to set my laptop on a cooler to see if it helped cool off the palmrest on the left and it did. My son took back his cooler though so I set it on my laptop table without the battery and it stays completely cool without the battery in! So that solved my problem of the heat while gaming. It does only get slightly warm but when keeping my left hand on the wasd keys to play a game was a bit uncomfortable. I doubt it will bother most people at all. But I have some trouble with my hands which makes it concern.

I still can't figure out why everyone is getting lower 3DMark scores than I am. Going to go run it again. Makes me worry that returning this one and ordering a new one will lower my scores!

It's because you have the 900p screen, so 3DMark06 runs at a lower resolution and thus your score is higher. And thanks for the info on the hard drive caddy, i will be needing one soon so i can add an SSD!

Has anyone run DPC Latency Checker and/or xperf/xperfview on the Studio 1747 yet ??

Thanks for posting your 1745 results aeo !! Were they with wifi & BT active or disabled ?

Not going to purchase one until I get a better sense of the typical performance for this model...

Also, has anyone been able to correct the Red oversaturation issue on the 1080 screen by adjusting settings ?

    No problem. And that's weird, it shouldn't be faster than that XPS 16! I have 4GB of 1066Mhz RAM (2 x 2GB).

Lepp, is your machine an i7-720QM?

If so can you run 3D mark again but this time on the battery without the AC adapter? I suspect you'll get a better score.

Also you may like to see if the score increases or decreases depending on the brightness of your screen.

I ask as I'm wondering if this model suffers from throttling due to a lack of power in the same way that an XPS 1645 does.

I have an XPS 1645 and a Studio 17 i7 on order and the 1645 scores around 7000 and it drops to around 5000 for people with machines with lots of options and a bright rgb screen.
