1066 Mhz is it?? beleive me.. It does Beat Studio Xps 16.. check out the benchmarks in the SXPS 16 thread posted on my request!

I guess this is due to a lot of throttling, bottlenecking & heating issues concerned wid studio xps 16..

Unfortunately, throttling, bottlenecking & heating issues concern also with New Studio 17: http://translate.google.it/translat...view-tests-dell-studio-17-core-i7-nkrt-1066/3

I would imagine that the problem will exist exactly the same as the processor, chiset, memory and I believe the ac adapter are the same on both models. In fact the Studio 17 should be worse as it has provision for second hdd which will only pull more power.

Wow that heat is kind of scary. Maybe I should be glad my order seems messed up.

As long as there are no service void stickers this should not be too rough.

You can get 2nd HD cage for about $15 from Dell. I just got one recently, but haven't installed yet.

The first time I opened up a laptop was to change the video card on my 1705. I just printed out the directions and followed them in order. Reversed to put it all back. Dell wanted me to send in the laptop so they could replace the video card and it took a bit for me to convince them that I could do it myself. I had already looked at the service manual so I knew exactly what I would have to do. I enjoyed it and was quite proud of myself, too :)

Newbie here..... great forum and have read through this post all the way through twice to build what I want...... !! :)

The one thing that is bothering me is I can't find the option for the touchscreen. I live in the United States and I was chatting with a sales tech who gave me the link and now I lost it... My history has been deleted too !

Anyone out there getting the touch screen. While I was on the link that I lost I did notice that It didn't come with the Core i7 720/820 quad option...... This is what I want ... the touch screen with the i7 quad core !!!

Anyone find this option out there !!!!

    PLEASE HELP ME.....

Also is it best to order over the phone or through text chat..... I will be buying "3" laptops (2) inspiron 15's and (1) studio 17 if I can get the studio with i7 and touch.... After adding up the totals of three I best to get another brand - unless they can give me a 30% discount - Which is what I want to ask for because I'm buying 3 from them at once...

    any help out there !!

    this site says it's possible !! http://www.slashgear.com/dell-studio-17-touch-adds-multitouch-to-monster-notebook-1963918/

There is currently no option to get Studio 17 with a touchscreen and i7 or 1080p resolution.

Finally got a bit of time to open my Studio 17 that I got on Friday. It's i7 820 model with 1080p screen, default 500GB HD and 4GB RAM. Keyboard is somewhat disappointing as well as fit/finish of the said keyboard. Key "7" was popped out a bit as well as the right side of the keyboard tray.

The number pad has fairly severe flexing, which is disappointing. The whole keyboard is just not what I was expecting. This maybe a deal breaker. I can't deal with crappy keyboards when I spend over $1500 on a system.

I haven't had the chance to do much other then initial setup, so don't have any benchmarks. I guess I'll see if I can live with the keyboard next couple days. I used the 130W power brick, and that was quite hot. Laptop itself did not seem very hot, although touchpad got warm.

After buying a $250 screen calibration tool, I was able to pretty much correct the overly red issue for firefox and photo editing programs, but not regular desktop stuff. I don't know if there are ways to actually apply it system wide, but that's the best I have at the moment.

Unfortunately I won't be able to tell you much more about it soon, as my screen came with a bad pixel and I have to ship it back to Dell to get it replaced - like 2 weeks to get it back. :-(

Anyone heard of a throttling problem on the I7 Studio with the 1600X900 screen? That article on the previous page was the only time I had heard it mentioned with that setup.

I see Bluetooth is now available as an option for $16 (US)... also nice to see price drops on all the upgrades... i820 is now $280 instead of $350... backlit keyboard is $20 instead of $25... etc...

Just give me the multitouch screen with 1080p, and I'm there :D

Dell is having 20% off sale right now. Makes that whole Bing 20% almost pointless (I think I did $50 better on bing overall).

The red is most noticeable when looking at a picture with someone in it with a slight reddish tint to their skin. On another monitor, they just have a slight reddish tint. On the 1080p monitor, their skin is very very red looking, they look the same except that they're completely suburned. I'd send you a link, but I'm at work right now so I can't get into my flickr account.

That being, I'd be very interested in the color profile your Spyder creates. I'd love to swap with you, just to check it out.

My chat with a sales rep was emailed to me..... the link he gave me is here....
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?cs=19&kc=ref&oc=DNDOTT1&x=7&y=7

If I go to Dells website and click studio 17 (not the link the sales rep gave me)I can't see the touch screen option showing up anywhere.... If I click the link he gave me I see the touch screen option... what gives? I want the touch screen with the i7 quad core... when is this coming out ? that will make me get this laptop !! Anyone see more choices with the studio 17 touch screen other than what I can find fast processor etc.

Yes it is. I re-ran the test on battery (High Performance Mode), and then again on the AC adapter but with the screen at its dimmest setting. All scores were similar.

6121 - AC, screen max brightness
    6134 - Battery
6139 - AC, screen lowest brightness

Short answer is nobody knows. Dell implied that touch screen option will be available for i7 models next year, possibly with 1080p screens as well. That's about it.

So, 2nd hard drive caddy/carrier assembly, did anyone figure out Dell part number for it? As earlier in the thread mentioned, the 1737 caddy definitely does not work. It's different shape and even if one modified it, it is lacking appropriate sata adapter for the onboard connector.

Hey guys, is anyone having problems with the ATI Mobility Radeon driver? Mine has been a pain in the . If I watch flash videos and put them on fullscreen my laptop just dies. I found out that I just needed to turn off hardware acceleration on Flash's settings, but still. There was another case where my mouse became ginormous after exiting fullscreen - so far that hasn't happened yet.

Haven't seen anything like this yet, however, I haven't really pushed the system much. I did manage to crash after doing a bit of overclocking with RivaTuner, but that's probably due to default driver. I shall be installing modified ATI drivers fairly soon (when I get some time on the weekend).

Has anyone else hooked their computer up to an external monitor or hdtv?

I've tried both hdmi and vga to my hdtv, and I feel like the colors might be a little washed out. I'm not sure - I mean the default screen's colors are so vivid (somewhat unrealistically so, so I'm not saying I want the same thing) it's hard to get a comparison. I've also done some other stuff, so I'm not sure if I just changed something in my setup.

Would love to hear what other people thought - thanks.

Does an old 17" CRT at work count? I got a decent image through VGA, but.... I'll hook it up to couple LCDs at home, going through VGA, HDMI (adapter) and DisplayPort (adapter).

Forgot to mention. I just finished brief testing with 3dmark06, overclocking the 4650. I got the o/c stable enough for testing at 746/892 (default 550/700) using GPUTool and RivaTuner, and received 7805 3dmark06 score. This is in 1200x800 resolution as my system does not support 1280x1024.

Laptop configuration itself is Studio 17 with i820 proc, 4GB DDR3 RAM, Seagate 500GB 7200 drive and ATI 4650. I am also using 130W power supply. Oh, and temps for GPU are running at 42-47 idle and 60-65 on full load.

Nope, this is just some initial test results I am running at work in the background while doing other tasks. I will do a few runs over the next several days and compare between the power supplies. The throttling talk on the XPS forums scared me into getting couple power supplies on ebay beforehand. Next step after that would be to test with the Throttlestep app (check XPS forums for the throttling thread) and 130w power supply.

Also, for the original score, not sure, did not run it... I guess I should, shouldn't I? :) I believe it's about 5800-6000 on default settings.

Update: Had couple of "whitescreen" crashes during some tests. Doing stability testing on 745/890. Got to say that I am pleasantly surprised by CPU/GPU temps. CPU is getting to 61 on full load and CPU is staying at around 50.

    Guys please help me!

I just got my studio 17 and it's HORRIBLE. The screen is so washed out that the blacks are greys and it just seems like there's a lightish tint to everything and the saturation is horribly low. The colors look so grey...

How can anyone find this acceptable? Photo editing will be impossible, and movie watching and gaming are very unpleasant. Please tell me there is a fix. Buyers remorse is setting in FAST.

My 1747 is being returned tomorrow. UPS is picking it up. Now I've got to order a new one. Having trouble deciding if I should try another 900p screen or upgrade to the 1080p.

Anyone here have the 900p? How are your viewing angles. Mine sucked but I know part of it is from the way it was installed since it keeps getting worse. None of the molding around the screen is tight. Now there is no angle to get a good view. The angle I prefer darkens out the top 2 inches of the screen and pulling it forward washes out the bottom half.

Or should I just go with the better screen? Puts my total cost $230 higher but at least it includes 3 year in home warranty instead of 1 year mail in.

Wow, just compared the estimated ship dates and for the 1080p it is February 3! But the 900p is January 1.

Yeah I have the same problem Bukket.

I am looking at buying a laptop and have kind of centered on the Studio 17 as the one I want to get. The problem is that if my laptop is going to be delivered possibly in February, first off that is a long time and second the components in the laptop when shipped will be even older which the price that you pay does not reflect.

Also for the people that own the laptop, I guess one of the things I'm worried about is how big it really is and how heavy it feels. Do you guys feel that it is still comfortable to lug the laptop around.

Is the memory upgrade a worthwhile one? 1066 to 1333?

Umm... are we talking about same screen here? It's absolutely fantastic to my eyes, one of best laptop screens I ever seen. Colors pop, it's very very bright (at 40% it seems about same as my HP 8530w at full power), and when calibrated, the little reddish tint that is present goes away. The only thing I could wish for (well, beside IPS) would be 1900x1200 res instead of 1920x1080, but 16 x 9 is where everyone is going (excepting few workstation laptops).

Edit: NM, you guys were talking about the 1600x900 screen.

The 1747 comes with the 8 cell battery and it adds to the bulk and weight. What are you used to carrying around now? The 1747 is much lighter than my 1720.

I can't see ordering now for something that won't be delivered until February. Looks like I will have to wait. Been looking at the HPdv8t but I just don't know about that video card.

If you are waiting till February, you may get the 5650 refresh. That should be pretty sweet.

Edit: Forgot to add that battery is 9 cell, not 8. I would say total weight is maybe 8-8.5 lbs, which is not too bad considering the size of the laptop.

I've had both the 900p and the 1080p screen (current). If it's really as bad as you describe, you got a defective unit and you should exchange it under a warranty return immediately. I thought *mine* was defective, and I could only tell on like 1 out of 5 photos (colors were vivid enough, but with certain colors any sort of gradient seemed to flatten into one color). It certainly didn't look like you describe.

If there's a Best Buy near you, they do stock the Studio 17" with the newer 900p screen - you could check out another model in person.

I'm having no luck at all with this laptop. First I got a beep code after 2 days (7 beeps - processor failure) so the Dell engineer came out and replaced the mobo. Works again now. Just running the render test in GPUTool and the temp is getting up to 100*c and then throttling back, then climbing again. (Not overclocked at all) I think the Dell engineer may not have seated the heatsink correctly.
