I'm guessing the 5650 refresh is a new graphics card? How much better is it supposed to be than the current graphics card in the Studio 17? I'm guessing it is one of the new ones that support Direct x 11

Anyone know how to fix my washed out, desaturated problem?
I have the cheapest 900p screen, but I didn't realize it was going to be this bad.
How do I make the blacks look black instead of grey? I tried brightness, contrast, and color correction, but to no avail.
If I tilt the laptop up, I can see 1/2 of the screen with nice blacks and colors, but the top half is negative, if that helps.
If I connect to a external monitor, the color is brilliant.
Please someone help. -

I was hoping that it was just my screen that was defective. I think I'm going to wait to rebuy until I have seen the screens in person. I don't want to go through this hassle again. -

... any indians got dell studio 17 with core i7? PLz reply!
-
If it came with the same service as an XPS Studio I would reorder today. Called tech support on the Studio XPS 1640 the other day and tech support answered on the 3rd ring. No transfers, nobody hung up on me. Their support is just superb. -
I really wonder how the temperature is, are there also construction errors like with the dell xps 13 and 16? Soz if this question is already asked, but I don't have time to read 60 pages lol. If this laptop would have a decent grafic card I already would have bought it, whats wrong with dell...maybe they can't sell their epensvie alienwares?
Heat and bad grafics...when will Dell finaly give something we want. Maybe I should just go for the asus g51j and import a NZXT Cryo coolpad for 75 euros from ebay (they have to ship it al the way from the usa to Belgium). Atleast I'll have decent grafics then. -
So I've spent what seems like a good few hours on the phone to dell tech support today.
Just couldn't get them to understand that the GPU was overheating and throttling back. They had me running tests that didn't stress the GPU and of course that didn't report any problems. They just wouldn't accept it.
I kept needing to press F12 to access the boot menu and I mentioned to the guy that the F12 key kept sticking down. Quick as a flash he arranged collection and a replacement. I was gob smacked, I asked what the deal was, he said that because there was an obvious problem it could be replaced no problem.
This is the GPUTool graph:
Reaches 100*C, frame rate drops
Reaches ~90*C, frame rate goes up again
Reaches 100*C, frame rate drops
Repeat until bored -
Is there any way to get this laptop with both the i7 processor and the touchscreen? I didn't see the option for that
-
Okay I'm going to return mine. I've never returned a laptop before, can you tell me step by step how to do it? Thanks for helping me guys, I'm really clueless.
-
-
He's just got a defective laptop. Oblomschik overclocked the gpu of his studio 17 and it was still under 70°C in full load
-
70deg C overclocked really isn't bad at all. the HP DV7T i7 I just returned hit that regularly watching youtube without being OC'd.
-
Blue has been removed as a color option on the top of the line Studio 17.
-
Holy **** this is hilarious. You can no longer get a 1080p screen either.
-
must be good demand bro... mines on my doorstep, i'm leaving now to get it. i will post feedback once i spend some time with it.
-
Trojita.....Midnight Blue is still available for other Studio 17 models, but not the i7 model. I wonder why?
http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/note...spx?refid=laptop_studio_17&s=dhs&cs=19&~ck=mn -
weird midnight blue is still an option on the dell canada site for the 17, however 1080p screen is not. Glad i ordered mine when i did!
-
me: I was about to order a studio 17 laptop the other day. One of the main features i was interested in was the 1080p display which no longer seems available on the studio 17 i7
Me: what happened? Will it be available again soon?
CA Sales Abdul 1580Let ,e check it
Me:okay
CA Sales Abdul 1580No problem
CA Sales Abdul 1580When are you planning to order
CA Sales Abdul 1580I Would add it manually
Me:Why is it not available online? Is there a back order on the parts?
Me:I do not want to order it if it will delay my order
CA Sales Abdul 1580Mostly the Studio 17 laptop is om a lead time
CA Sales Abdul 1580It would be 2 months to receive it
Me:Wow, that is a long time!
CA Sales Abdul 1580So better order the studio XPS 16
SystemThe session has ended!
I am not sure quite how to interpret that, but hey... that is about as straight forward as it gets when using dell... -
The whole things makes me worry. I am supposed to receive me order the 25th (yeah right!) of this month. By my calculations, that means they would have to ship either tomorrow or Monday. My order is still showing as in production. I spent 50 mins on hold yesterday only to have a rep tell me that it may be a day early or a day or two late because of Christmas. Something tells me it will be longer than that...
-
Ill start at the beginning:
On 11/15 i ordered a studio 1555 from the outlet, received it and the thing did not even turn on. So i sent it back, then dell called and said we have a good deal on new systems would you like me to get you a quote. I said sure because i was worried about the 1 year warranty, so he offered me a studio 17 pretty much loaded for about the same price as the 1555 if i would have purchased the additional warranty.
I was told when i purchased the new studio 17 it would be shipped out in 3 to 5 days, and they were going to give me 2nd day shipping. So essentially i would have a new unit with in a week to a week and a half. Well 1 month later it says my laptop is now in the boxing stage and set to deliver on 12/22, I called them today and told the guy i wanted the thing overnighted, he said to me he will see what he can do. Well just signed and it looks like he got it approved because my unit has not shipped but it updated to next business day shipping. So now looks like i will get it on monday if all goes well, which is great because its going to my office and i am on vacation after tuesday.
I understand all the frustration from everyone, and since this is my first dell purchase i will never go through it again, will prob use newegg next time. -
-
Btw, for everyone who is looking at the 1080p screen, I think it's just the demand issue, and not quality issue. At least I haven't seen complaints anywhere about the screen other then red push (which is correctable). -
I really wish they would train sales better. They pretty much say whatever they want to make a sale. The only way you could have gotten a system in 1 week was if you ordered a Fast Track system. They are already built and ready to ship. Any time you custom order it has to be processed (payment approval), pre-production (put all the pieces required in a bin), build, testing, shipped to the "home" factory, add the rest of the order (I believe this is manuals, disks, etc), and then shipped to you.
Sorry to hear your Outlet system was bad. I've bought 4 or 5 laptops from there and haven't had any problems. But I have read about it happening to others. The upside is that it is easy to return and when I order one it is here in 2 days. Plus they have 15% off sales all the time. -
As I said in previous post, getting max 60is-70ish GPU (gaming it stays around 60) and max 70 CPU and the latter only during heavy testing, i.e. running Prime95. The laptop cooling works fairly well for me. Tested it on a big Antec cooler (with 220mm fan) and didn't really see significant differences. It ran cool enough without.
Edit: Actually I may just do a fresh install, pull McAffee, that thing is a hog, going to install Avast instead. I think McAffee and Spybot being memory resident may have affected some of my test scores. I will let everyone know what I find. Also, I recommend getting Throttlestep utility from XPS forum as well as 130W adapter. I am also using modded ATI driver, not Dell default. -
After using a 17" 16:10 for so long it takes a bit to get used to the 16:9. Dropping it down to a 15.6" was way too small for me.
But keeping the 1640 for myself was pretty tempting. If my son hadn't wanted it there is no way I could have sent it back. I would've found some use for it -

-
It has been in boxing for about 2 days. I cant imagine them not making the EDD now. But who knows! I have to say that over all my experience has been pretty good. But i dont think i would have even thought about buying a Dell if i found this website before i ordered. -
I do have one question. I have the blue ray drive, but i have seen some of the 1745's that come with a remote that slips into the side of the unit, is that standard or did i miss clicking on a upgrade option?
-
I just received one out of the 2 I ordered today. The one that came was mine, and it has the 1080p screen. This thing is gorgeous. I've been using it all night, not a single complaint other than the touchpad is HUGE. I can't keep my fat palms off it. Build quality seems awesome, much better than the HP I had. So far I'm thrilled with it, can't wait to order and install my BT module.
-
Update on my GPU overclocking endeavor. I uninstalled McAffee and put in Avast instead. I also installed new ATI Catalyst 9.12 driver (modified) and uninstalled some background apps from Dell that were not needed. Actually, surprisingly enough Dell does not really put in much crapware at all, especially as compared to Sony, HP and Asus.
Got the system more or less stable at 745/895 clocks and back at 7800 3dmark06. I am running GPUtool stability test right now, going to leave it overnight. CPU is running at 46-48C, GPU is running at 62-63C.
I am also now wondering if there are warranty stickers on the CPU/GPU. If not, I am somewhat considering applying Arctic Silver (or better) when I am going to install the bluetooth module, since I have to open the system up anyway. -
-
Got my new Studio 17 today, it is about two weeks early which made me quite happy!
First impressions are great, I like it way more than the 1737 ( I may require a username change now!)
I like the new keyboard, or at least the slightly changed version. I like how it turns off the backlit keyboard when not in use. As well as the entire layout, you cannot see lights and wires though the screen of the speakers as you could with the old one. Also I like that I do not have to use the Fn key to use the little extras that I would be using instead of the F keys. The speakers even sound better to me, but I might be wrong about that.
I haven't really run anything intense on it but it does not get as hot as the old one.
The one thing I dislike is how the keys under the touch pad do not line up well, but that is just my OCD kicking in.
Anyway I shall report more as I play with it. Might have a few questions as well! -
Glad to hear you got yours. If i remember correctly, POS1737, you ordered right around the same time I did. December 2? I hope mine comes sooon! the anticipation is killing me.
-
Between all of my laptops I've done this for a video card, hard drive, and AC adapter. I've received 2 laptops that had problems and returned them in the first week. It happens. It tends to happen more when you order a laptop that has just been released. That's why a lot of people wait until a system has been out for a while. Gives them time to work out some of the bugs. Most of the time the problems can be fixed with updated drivers. But it may take some time for them to be released. -
It really is much nicer than the 1737. I'm surprised that it is cooler though. My husband's 1737 never heats up at all while the 1747 got slightly warm on the left side of the palmrest.
The speakers on the 1747 are much, much better. -
@oblomschik - I watched the engineer take the heatsinks off the CPU and GPU, there didn't look to be any tamper tags and I'm pretty sure he didn't put any back after he'd re-fitted them.
Could you link to this throttlestep you've talked about. Can't find it on google. Also could you link to the drivers you've found to work? Ta
@Bukket - I didn't realise they'd be up for customers opening the laptops themselves without voiding the warranty. I'm gonna go ask if I can do that and put some arctic silver in there.
EDIT: Just got off the phone with tech support again "That would be a violation of warranty" Meh. -
Second, I totaly agree with your waiting argument. -

Here is the link from the xps thread... -

So far I have noticed two more annoyances, not so much a big problem.
First off you have to becareful on how you open the laptop as the casing around the screen seems loose in a few areas.
Second thing is just the side scrol on the trackpad sticks sometimes, it can get annoying but maybe I just do not have it figured out yet.
The first thing might lead to a return, but I will see how it goes. I just hate flimsy things :/. -
Just a lil update for those who are interested...
Dell accepted a return for a new laptop, however I got the email today with the estimated delivery date of 10th of February. My head was like a box of frogs, didn't know whether to just go along with that and be without a laptop for ages, return this laptop and buy something else, or get one of their engineers out to try and sort the overheating issue and the keys sticking.
So I decided to fix it myself, this is what I found.
Damn incompetent engineer. What you can see on the GPU is just the ATI brand.
So I'm up and running again with Arctic Silver 5 on the CPU and GPU, just going to run some benchmarks.
EDIT: Thats better
That should come down a bit more as the AS5 cures.

Throttling occurs on 1747. Posting from iPhone so will be short.
Furmark + prime causes a multiplier of 9.
Kill a watt shows 90w
using only prime CPU runs normally. Uses 80-90w
tested on ac only not on battery -
I use a trackball so I didn't use the touchpad much. Liked what I did use of it but I remember turning the side scrolling off. It probably needs some fine tuning in the adjustments. -
Did they replace your keyboard?
