I had enough waiting and hoping, so cancelled today. Had to speak to 2 reps, before got forwarded to a supervisor, but once that was done and explained why i wanted to cancel, it was no problem.
Im off to find a Vaio F series, only one for reasonable price, and superb screen (i hope).

Thats exactly my point DELL's USA site is like a treasure Box, one moment my configuration is $1200, the next hour I can no longer make the same configuration, 15 minutes later the same configuration costs nearly double.
Plus no more Bluray Drive for the Studio 17 at least on the site. I just don't get it. Why play so many tricks. -
http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=43560
Finally a decent system on DELL's site. Built a Studio 16 XPS $1,400 after discounts promo codes.
-RGB LED 1080p Display
-Intel 6200 2x2 WiFi
-9 Cell Battery
-1 Year LoJack
- 3 Year Warranty
- Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module (2.1+EDR)
- Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi MB
- 6GB Shared Dual Channel DDR3
- ATI Mobility RADEON® HD 4670 – 1GB
- 500GB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive
- Intel® Core™ i7-620M (2.66GHz, 4Threads, turbo boost up to 3.33Ghz 4MB
Amazing, probably a glitch or special promotion, I would have ordered it heck 32nm Core i7 with 4MB L3 Cache best part a 35 Watt TDP.
I would order fast before the promo is gone. Or they fix the glitch. You can not beat this system.
Only down side, no Bluray. That sucks DELL WHY!!!!???
I will be calling in tomorrow, for a lower price and only 1 YEar Warranty don't need a 3 Year, I would rather have Bluray. -
-
-
No Blu Ray and no back lit keyboard I got to have both
-
things constantly changeing but stilll no 1080 screen !!!
is the regular 1080 which being offered on the studio 15 page that much worst than the rgb screen !! -
-
-
and where is the promo code you talking about ?
Thanks -
I'm sure there are some operations which are more efficient with a touchscreen.
I did give up on Dell and ordered a Sony F series. Maybe next year I'll get a laptop with a touchscreen. Dell just seems like a disorganized mess right now. I don't understand what they're doing. -
Also I know the Core i7 620M is only 2 Cores But its has 2 extra threads so it acts like 4 Cores, plus its 32nm uses less power runs cooler. Heck my T9400 runs at 35TDP at 2.53hz and its only 2 Cores and its blazzing fast with 6MB L2 cache. Using IDA, the T9400 its multiplier is 9.5 but when it needs to it Boosts up to 2.69Ghz I can see it using CPUZ, the multiplier will change automatically from 9.5 to 10.
I can only Imagine how much faster a 32nm Core i7 620M. Would be at 2.66Ghz with Turbo Boost to 3.33Ghz, Plus DDR3 RAM. ut I really want to wait for a good Quad Core.
But at least now decent good 32nm Core i7 are here. -
dell uk product description page has been updated, advertising core i5 as the standard with "up to optional" core i7 and also coming soon core i3???
really now, why wont dell let this notebook live up to its obvious potential..."we've got 1080p, we've got multi-touch and blu-ray...but we dont want to give you that, instead we're rolling out the pu$$y i3's!" -
They did that with the Studio XPS 16 just when the mobile i7's were announced, from what I remember it took a week or two before you could actually config an i7 XPS 16 on the UK site
-
Now I dell canada offreing the Studio 17 with I5 and no video card !!!
What a shame
http://www1.ca.dell.com/ca/en/home/...px?refid=studio-1747&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&ref=lthp -
I have run some (game) benchmarks on a Dell studio 1747 with Intel Core i7 & ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 1GB and compared it with an XPS 420.For those who are interested click here.
-
On the U.S. site, the 1747 with i7 processor and ATI video has disappeared! Only i5-520M with integrated graphics... no 1080p RGBLED, no bluray, and of course no multitouch yet... and a ship date a month away... is Dell losing their minds?
(But hey, now we've got a TV tuner option with the Intel graphics)
-
-
-
I'm jumping this ship before I sink with it. As a student, $2500 CND is just too much to p!ss away on a crippled product -
-
so than just get the new i7 dual core instead of the i7 quad core since its starts from 2.66 Ghz should be ok i am not an expert needless to say lol
-
Backlit keyboard is a must for me !
-
What makes me insane is how IF you manage to find the Touchscreen studio 17 because DELL Hides it on the site. If you find it you can only configure it with an Intel Graphics.
Thats riduculous, DELL pull it and don't sell it. Its obvious you don't want to sell it. -
heck i'd take an i5 or the new dual core i7 if i could get a guarantee that it doesn't throttle under full gpu and cpu load.
Looks like I'm going to have to return my r+bg 1080 i7 720 when I get it, if I ever do. I don't want to bother with the hassle of buying a new AC adapter and running a 3rd party program to disable the throttling that goes on. -
Problem is the Dell site doesn't allow the studio 17 with core i5 to be configurated with a dedicated graphics card!
Just hope that by mid-february upgrades the studio 17 with the ati 5000 series (by then these should be well available on the market) and puts the damn 1920x1080 screen back.
In theory throttling should not be an issue. Previous power consumption calculations in this thread showed that power is not significantly higher than compared to the old P-series (because of better energy-efficiency on processor, motherboard on so on, on the arrandales).
Well Dell, I'm waiting! But in the meantime, I'm keeping an eye on the comptetion. They seem to have woken up...
Below my theory why the studio 17 (or 15 or sxps16...) with arrandale and the ati 5000 series should not have throttle issues
Here are some tpd facts from Intel using their superb System Design tool. Beware, Intel does not mention anywhere that their Turboboost does not allow to exceed the max tdp (which could also explain throttling issues).
Details order: Processor name - System details - Max TDP (ordered from high to low tdp)
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9400 (6M Cache, 2.53 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) - GM45 Express Chipset with 82801IEM I/O Controller Hub (ICH9EM) - 49,5 watts
Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Processor (6M Cache, 1.60 GHz) - HM55 Platform Controller Hub - 48,5 watts
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8600 (3M Cache, 2.40 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) - GM45 Express Chipset with 82801IBM I/O Controller Hub (ICH9M) - 39,5 watts
Intel® Core™ i5-540M Processor (3M Cache, 2.53 GHz) - PM55 Platform Controller Hub - 38,5 watts
Intel® Core™ i7-620M Processor (4M Cache, 2.66 GHz) - PM55 Platform Controller Hub - 38,5 watts
These measures are all with the included integrated graphics of intel (4500 series or the new Intel HD graphics)
It seems that the new arrandale are indeed quit power-efficient. They give a lot more power per watt than the previous generation!
Next the new ati hd 500 series would consume (according to Ati themselfs) 4 times less than the 4000 series.
The theoritical facts say it's about 2-3 times less, still amazing off course.
Ati radeon 4560 - 35 watt (max tdp)
Ati radeon 5650 - 15-19 watt (max tdp)
Note: The Ati site didn't unveil much information or the page gave an error. These tdp's are based on information provided by notebookcheck.net (they are a quit reliable source, they're tdp are based on official specs and experiences). Still because the 5000 series are new, the real tdp could slightly differ.
So i'm somewhat convinced that arrandale with ati 5000 card and a 90 watt psu should not give any throttling problems. Now Dell only has to put this config on their site off course... -
32nm Arrandale is the way to go in a good Laptop. Low Watt usegae, and the ATI 5xxx series 15 to 19 watts NICE!!.
that being said. I really want a Quad Core. Gaming really needs Quad Core everything is about mutiple cores.
Yes Core 2 Duo and 2 Core Arrandales will be perfectly fine for the next year or so. But not for Gaming.
I am soo impressed by Core 2 Duo T series and the 6MB cache the P9700 uses less Watts and still has 6MB cache.
But the most I have seen from the Mobile Core i7 32nm Arrandles is 4MB L3. -
Having a lot of cache is mostly important for servers.
The new arrandale platform has no northbrigde which eliminates the biggest bottleneck between cpu and ram. Which in turn reduces the difference of speed between ram and cache memory. Because cache is only there because the cpu could benefit from superfast memory.
Latest years ram became more and more performant, but the bottleneck (northbrigde with fsb) staid.
So that could be one of the reasons why the t-xxxx or p-xxxx processors will be less performant than the arrandales.
And, I know it's a sensible subject, but real gamers have a desktop. There's no better performance than in a desktop. Better airflow (hence better hardware), upgradeable (in every aspect),... -
-
Exactly, good point, which is why my T9400 with 6MB cache even with 2 Core at 2.53Ghz and a 1066mhz FSB. Is slower because I only have
4GB DDR2 RAM at 800mhz so I am only going as fast as the 800Mhz RAM.
I would need 1066Mhz DDR2.
Now a 32nm Core i7 (2 Core 2 Threads per core) with 4GB DDR3 RAM at 1333Mhz would be perfection.
And even though Both CPU's are 35 Watts TDP, the Core i7 since it eleimnate the Northbridge, that saves power. And eliminates the FSB bottleneck that makes it much faster.
Although, a P9700 with 4GB DDR3 RAM would be just fine, And "if" you could build it some how on DELL, woul dbe great battery life. Since DDR3 uses only 1.5 volts, vs DDR2 uses 1.8Volts -
Well..after reading this topic, I am seriously considering to cancel my order...dell should have tested their product much better in the first place. The throttling issue is unacceptable..whats the point of buying a fast cpu if it doesnt get enough power..I'd like a quality product right out of the box, I dont want to spend any time getting my hands on a 130 PSU and using that throttlestop app..I'm gonna wait a few more days to see if any major changes are coming up, if not, dell will lose yet another customer..
Also the delivery is taking too long, ordered on 22/12, EDD 03/02..thats more than 6 weeks, a bit too long if u ask me. -
Has anyone ever heard or read about a Studio 1745 (with T9400) having throttling issues?? I thought this was only happening on the new Studio 1747/SXPS16 with i7 platform.. -
I will just return during the 21 day no questions asked return policy. I ordered a i7 core with the 1080 R+BG Full HD screen. These laptops seem to be the ones hardest hit by the throttling.
Sad that they can't get it to work properly because from what I hear, the screen is a thing of beauty. Now, I just need to wait to get my laptop (been waiting since 12/9 and on backorder) so I can return it. In the meanwhile, I'm without a personal computer. -
-
They cannot charge you for selling you a faulty product. If you had just decided that you didn't want it any more, then yeah. But not for something that is a documented problem. Especially after Dell has publicly acknowledged the problem -
Its Lemon because of the throttling problems right? I have not been keeping up on a daily basis, but it sounds bad.
On a side note my 1737, with T9400 and ATI graphics sure does use more watts than a newer i7 Core, but I have never had throttling problems. Quite the opposite. Intel IDA, and Speed Step or whatever the 2.53Ghz goes up to 2.69 Ghz on its own.
My guess is that its the thermal profile and enginnering of the new mobile Core i7 DELL, did not get it right. Heat and power issue.
With all the complaints and returns, I would always have that doubt. If I am really getting all my speed.
However the new 32nm Arrandles I would not hesistate to trust.
But a 1747 No Way. No thanks
Maybe a 1749 or a 1757 whatever they need to end the 1747 line.
Bottom line its should be as good or better than the 1737 and from no Bluray, to no RGB LED to speed problems its not.
Sad to say that 14 months later and the older machine is superior. Not because of how fast it is. But at least you could build what you wanted.
RGB LED, Bluray, Good dedicated graphics.
I see some good configurations. And when I finalize, I see I a forced into with no option to select different. A DELL WiFi, and 32-bit Windows.
And honestly, the whole Core i7 is confusing (by design) they ALL say Core i7 but some are 2 Core (4 threads total) some are 4 Cores (8 threads total)
And Grandma and the Average public has little to no idea, that what they think is a 4 Core machine is really a 2 Core, Core i7 (with 4 threads), not 4 Cores.
Its muddy and confusing by design. -
I don't get all the fuss. Run Throttlestop, spend $30.00 on a 130wPS (They're all over ebay)).. problem solved.
I'm still sticking with the Dell I ordered, nobody has the exact same feature set I want, after digging around, everybody else's i7 laptop throttles, or has a crappy vidcard/poor screen, or overheats.
ASUS's new LT looks pretty good, however until it actually's on the street, who can say..
The throttling issue is completely user solvable. -
Since ages manufacturers trust on this tdp (it's the usual procedure, with any manufacturer) to configure new laptops.
It seems that Intel did not inform their clients very well about this possible danger. Some manufacturers discovered this when testing, some not... But it seems that is wasn't time yet for a 45nm mobile quadcore cpu (with turboboost).
I'm convinced Intel's marketing and sales announced it with great all the bell's and whistles, but see now (only 2-3 months later) they only talk about arrandale anymore. They avoid the clarksfield ones and notebook manufacturers adapted their laptops (much higher psu's, throttling limits,...).
So probably the fault is not entirely Dell's. Okay, they had to perform more tests, but they chose to launch quick and trust Intel. Intel is not afraid as we have seen. Their marketing engine runs very good. The masses are convinced that Intel is the best and AMD sucks. Intel knows that
Anyway, we can't say the arrandale is bad at all! Just need those ati-5000 series in that studio 17!
Update: Dell has updated their support page (manuals) with the 1749 configurations:
- Core i3/i5/i7
- Ati mobility 5650 (1GB DDR3)- not sure but probably with switcheable graphics (standard with arrandale's according to Intel)
- HM55 chipset
- max 8 GB 1066 Mhz
Note: the full hd screen (1920-1080) is still there in the configuration options of the manual. An indication it will come back! -
yeah, no one cares about linux... but well, i do (well, about half a year ago i could not even imagine me using linux... but it's great!)
i'll stick with my 1747 though. it works great for all i'm using it for and i don't really need its full power
and maybe it can use more of its potential when turbo mode is disabled... anyone knows a way to do this? -
Will the power supply from a Dell 9400 work on the studio 17? The voltage seems the same.
Also I looked on ebay and 130wPS didnt come up... should I search something else. -
Be careful though, there are knockoffs there I am not sure I would trust. Make sure it's really a Dell branded power supply. -
FYI,
Studio 1745's are now appearing in the Dell Outlet inventory.

To say this is completely user solvable is an out right lie. You have no idea what sort of wear will occur from forcing a system to run at higher temperature then what it was tested at. Buy a cooling mat you say? Read above argument as to why I will not take that route.
By just accepting that this system is "user solvable" you are giving more reason for Dell to just ignore the problem, and continue to operate in a way that unethical. Make this mistake cost them money, and lots of it! It is the only thing companies like this understand. -
Oh and btw, the arrendale is not you saviour, 10 less TDP is not going to solve the throttling issue. Especially with an upgraded screen.
-
Throttling has got to do with power consumption, not HEAT.
The system throttles when the CPU/GPU uses more power than is safely available. (90W PS), it has nothing to do with heat.
Thottlestop prevents the system from doing that, the larger PS provides the extra power the system wants. (meaning theres no damage).
I get where you are comming from, I too would like Dell to change the PS, however I've decided that instead of ranting and raving, I will quietly enjoy my UNTHROTTLED, 130w ps equipped/throttlestop engaged LT when it comes.
BTW, If you're so pissed off.. you should be canceling immediately. not threatening to "Return" it. -
Speaking of heat
You are aware that the current Studio 17 i7 produces less heat than the Studio 17 Core2's...... -
first thinking, then writing! -
Can anyone tell me 100% recipe/method that'll show me throttle efect ? (soft/order of use/settings)
-
More power consumption WHEN the system feels it needs to draw more power.
Power load is dynamic, not constant.
The extra power or "heat", would present itself while the system was taxed beyond the throttled limits, hardly I think beyond the CPU/GPU's thermal limits.
Surf the web, watch video.. your system will behave normaly. Only when engaged in 3d gaming would you tend to draw more power. (beyond the throttling point)
I've yet to hear any negative reports from users of the larger PS.
Why, right here on this forum there have been positive reports.
If it was unsafe for the cpu/gpu to draw the power it needs, then the entire Studio line is faulty.
ALL LT's produce more heat/ draw more power when being used to greater extremes. There's no evidence that using the 130w PS will damage your system.
BTW, are you an engineer?
What makes you assume that using the 130w PS is unsafe?!?
