You should be ok with 1749. It has less power hungry proc, chipset, display and video.

To continue with my problem.. Here is what has happened, for anyone elses reference..

I rang up dell 'tech' support here in the UK, and obviously I got some call centre in pakistan :), and so I told him my problem, he told me to run some tests, and the last one was to hold down Fn and D while turning on laptop which tested the screen, which after some coloured screens it powered down, which according to the guy meant the screen was faulty, which was a given, either that or the gpu. He said with my 1yr C.A.R warranty a courier would pick it up for repair etc etc... He then told me about an offer which is on to upgrade to 3yr 24hour in-home/office for £108, which meant I`m getting it done quicker, and got a nice bargain in the process.. I also bought a 130watt psu from reading the posts about throttling etc here.. (well what is a credit card for!)
We shall see what happens monday..

I started a thread about this but noone has answered and then I found this thread about the Studio 17. For those of you that ordered the FHD RGB screen with 1080P, what is your ITEM NUMBER for this screen in your order? My notebook is to be delivered Monday and my item number is 320-0828. Two sales agents said that this was the FHD 1080P screen but the description says (900P). I'm very apprehensive about this and not sure whether I should accept the shipment or not? Can't seen to find out for sure if this is the screen or not?

The 1747 that I have now has the 1080p screen and this is what is on the invoice: Y060P MOD,LCD,17.3,FHD,WLED,90%,AUO

Went and looked at the old invoice for the first one I bought that had the 900p screen and it says: 320-0828 17.3 inch HD+ (900p) Bright LED Display with TrueLife and Camera

I bet your's is going to have the lower res screen. But you might as well take the shipment and check it out. You'll have no problem returning it since it isn't what you ordered. Even if it is what you ordered it is easy to return.

Accept the shipment and check it out. Even if it is the wrong screen it will give you the chance to check out the system. I hope they screwed up and you get the 1080p. I love this screen. Even with the throttling and the screwed up fans I can't bring myself to return it. I can read for hours with no eye strain.

Let us know what happens. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you :)

Yea I think I'm screwed. Like I said I called two reps to confirm and both "assured" me that it is the 1080P screen. My question was, "If it's the 1080 why doesn't it say it?"

Problem is now how do I prove that I ordered the correct screen or called to confirm? If I accept the shipment then I take the chance of having to pay a 15% restocking fee if it's not the correct screen and I have to return it. I'm not sure what I'll do.

Thanks a lot for the info.

I just got off the phone with a guy (who actually speaks english) at Dell and he confirmed that what I will receive is the 900P screen and not the 1080P. He had no idea why three reps told me that I was getting the 1080P? I"m trying to figure that one out myself. The interesting thing is that he said since the 1080P screens are so backordered that Dell is not even offering this screen as an option on the Studio17 and may not again.

Now whether to refuse the shipment or try it out and take the chance they won't charge me the restocking fee? The Dell rep said they wouldn't since they are sending something I didn't order but it's a chance and probably tons of phone calls and time. What a nightmare this order process has been.

Accept the order and try it out. You will NOT have any problems returning it and you won't be charged a restocking fee. I ordered a 1747 with the 900p screen and returned it because I hated the screen. Reading text on it hurt my eyes.

If you want to be double sure that they won't question the return tell them that the screen viewing angle is terrible, the power adapter is too hot to handle, the fans are cycling on and off, and your system is not running at the speed it is suppose to be (throttling). These are the main issues with the 1747 with i7.

The cycling fan is the only one that is annoying me. I ordered a cooler so I can keep it turned on low. I'm hoping that will cover the noise or stop the laptop fans. It would be fine if I could find a program to keep the 1747 fans on low. But this on and off every 10 seconds is driving me nuts. It does this with no load at all. Once I start gaming the fans stay on high the whole time.

Check out this thread for all the issues with the 1747. It will give you plenty of information on the problems in case you want to return the laptop:

    http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19310587/19649168.aspx?PageIndex=1

Hopefully you will like the system as is and if you do, give them a call and tell them you are going to return it because it is not what you paid for. They should offer you a credit. I would insist on a credit even before I decided to keep it or not. The price I paid was the main reason I returned the 900p screen. It was not a $1300 laptop. I got the same system except with the 1080p screen from the Outlet for $1260. I can live with the problems for that price.

Thanks for the link. There seems to be some terrible issues with the Studio 17 and Dell in general. Wow. I would like to play with it a bit but just the thought of having to go through one more minute of hastle with Dell just makes my skin crawl. I've already been on the phone a total over nearly 4 hours just to have 3 agents lie and tell me my order had the 1080P and the last one to honestly tell me no, that's not what you ordered. I can't believe this company does business this way! I'm beginning to think Dell cares less about you and me with all their government contrats to fill their balance sheet. Lying to "make the sale" and selling a system plagued with so many problems in inexcuseable.

I go overseas for work for several months in two weeks. Just when I though I'd have a laptop in time, now I have to find one in short order. I don't want to "settle" for something I don't want. I need a 17-18" screen and pretty powerful. I like the Asus A73's but you can get them yet.

The Asus is out. Order one from Newegg.com. I thought about ordering one but I don't know about the screen. Plus I'm in Alaska so the shipping charges are a lot more.

This one only has 1 hard drive and no bluray:

Update: a guy has just been and replaced the mainboard (they said it was the screen???) anyway, for now it looks as tho its fixed it, so I guess it was maybe the video chip maybe....

UPDATE #2 FFS!! Not only is the problem not fixed (after the laptop powered on for about an hour its back again) I now I have another problem...the front speakers arent working, only sound produced is coming in the form of the dull/bass of the subwoofer... I guess he`s not connected the wires back properly or something.. Anyway I have a guy coming again, to try fix both problems.. I wont be here tho, I have this inconvenient thing called a JOB... If they cant fix it this time, I`ll be asking for a replacement laptop.

Yes I am a Newegg junkie. I saw that laptop and will order it in a pinch but unfortunately it's the same price as the ones coming out with two drives and with the Blueray only $50 more. I sure hope Asus gets these out sooner. I'll be working in the middle east and not able to get a lappy from here very easily. :(

Oh Fedex just came with the Dell and I refused the order. I think as you it wouldn't be a problem returning it but I just can't deal with that hasle right now as I'm so mad at Dell. I have 0% patience with them at the moment. I also emailed customer service with a detailed report and names of what happened and all I got back was a canned answer "Sorry for the inconvenience............your laptop will be delivered today......we hope you enjoy it". Man what a disconnect. Just tells me that they don't care at all. Anyway the search is back on for a lappy. Thanks for all your help and feedback. Oh you'll like this but I posted my problem in the Dell forum and an admin deleted it. Said it violated their TOS. Like the Gestapo, say anything against us and we censor you. Ah well it's their forum. I was just trying to get some answers.

You should, no reason for this continuous issues. Oh, question for you guys, do you get USB power of the esata/usb port on the left? Can't run anything with decent power reqs out of that port or so it seems. Tried couple different mice, a keyboard, USB cooler and a memory stick, and only the latter works.

Edit: Forgot to ask, did anyone try BIOS beyond A04 and did it make any difference? Dell is still only offering A04 on the US side, and A05 seemed like a dud, so was wondering about A07. Been seeing weird freezing issues pop up again (can move the mouse, but nothing else responds) when I leave the computer for a while.

Edit2: Forget about the BIOS. People on the Studio 1747 Dell thread are ing left and right that it throttles even more then before to keep PSU from heating up. http://en.community.dell.com/forums/p/19310587/19649168.aspx?PageIndex=36

Edit3: Tried 1080p full screen youtube trailers and they worked fine. Tried Ninja Assassin, Batman and Avatar. Works both on IE or Firefox (better on latter).

Ive had A07 on but I havent checked for any throttling, but I also have ordered a 130W PSU, and I`m hoping its not being throttled still with that.

Throttling is there. If you use 130W PSU and Throttlestop you should be ok, I'd think.

    Hello everyone

Does anyone know where I will get the ThrottleStop program from, as i cannot find it anywhere. I cannot even find it listed as a type of software

Is there a European version of the 130 PSU and which would be a good one? One for the UK and one for France or would i just need different pin plugs but the same PSU?
Can I use anyone or does it have to be dell?

Is using the throttleStop and PSU safe? Has anyone had any repercussions,
    hopefully only more speed

I have asked the guy from Dell on the phone like 100 times if this is a 1080p screen and he tells me YES it is and mentions that 1600 BY 900 is the resolution. The 1080p figure he states are the pixels.

Why does the description say 17.3” High Definition+ (1600x900) LED with TL

If this isnt a 1080p screen is the potential of the 1 gb graphics card irrelevant?

I have on order this laptop but am thinking of cancelling

Is this a good laptop and if so what specifically is good about it?
I know the whole thread is addressing this point but in a nutshell and with regards to the exact specs below could someone tell me if this a step from a descent core duo laptop and why?

    thanks

    Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Mobile Processor (1.6GHz, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
    Genuine Windows® 7 Professional, 64bit, English
    17.3” High Definition+ (1600x900) LED with TL
    Black chainlink
    4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]

Fixed Internal DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive including Software
Primary 9-cell 85 WHr Lithium Ion battery
    Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card (802.11 b/g)
2.0 Mega pixel Integrated Web Camera
    Internal UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
    90W AC Adaptor

Its been some time now have dell corrected the 7 beep problem from the production line?

I talked to a Dell sales agent yesterday and he said they haven't been building the 1080P screens on the Studio 17 since Dec. I ordered a Studio 17 and it said on the specs HD+ (900P). Three reps said it was the 1080P but the guy I talked to yesterday said, "No it's not". I didn't accept the order from FedEx when they delivered it this morning. What is your item number for the screen? This is what they'd say:

    non-1080P:
1 320-0828 17.3 inch HD+ (900p) Bright LED Display with TrueLife and Camera

    1080P:
1 313-80433 17.3 inch Full HD (1080P) B+RG LED Display with TruLife and Camera

Yes I'm ticked at Dell to. I'm through with them and their lies!

Hmm... for ThrottleStop, check Dell XPS Throttling thread on XPS Forums on this website.

For the system, frankly, I'd get Asus G73j if you are interested in gaming or maybe Toshiba Qosmio X505.

I ended up buying a 1745 from Dell's outlet a couple weeks ago. It has the Intel 2.8ghz Core2 T9600 and a 1080p screen. Every now and then it locks up and takes about 30 seconds to resume whatever it is that I'm doing. After monitoring the processors activity with CPU-Z, I've realized it has been throttling like crazy. This makes no sense to me considering I'm not putting it under heavy stress or gaming.

I started running Throttlestop and for the most part that seems to have taken care of the locking up issue. I thought only the i7 systems were the ones having problems with this though.

I don't know what to do at this point. I'm considering contacting Dell and telling them it is having these issues and that I want to send it back for a refund. I really like this laptop though and if there's any real fix to this, I'd prefer to keep it.

Can you get it to throttle on demand? (ie running furmark and prime95) or is it just random?
    It should only throttle if:
    A) It overheats (use HWmonitor to check temps)
    B) It uses over approx 80watts (Although the PSU is 90 they build in a tolerance)

Either way it should take both GPU and CPU load to cause throttling.

My Studio XPS 1640 with P9500 would throttle on load. I undervolted the CPU using RMclock which reduces the heat and power and this stopped the throttling. RMClock is brilliant for older C2D processors so I would definately try that. PM me if you need help.

The guy I spoke to actually tried to back up his argument saying that its 1600 by 900 resolution and that the screen has pixels 1080p and he was going out of his way to reassure me this was the case

Dell are a big company, is lying to people about their products legal?
Don't they risk being sued or something

Thank you Jettubby for giving me the specific part description for the screen

However im none the wiser here is the part description I got

    MOD, LCD, 17.3, HDF+, WLED, TLF,AUO

To call a screen high definition does it have to have a minimum of 720p

even if the screen is not 1080p is it still any good?

Have you factored in price? Is the G73j available in europe and is the price comparable to this dell?

Is their any similar spec laptop or better for around the £750-900 equivalent Euro which ideally includes 3 years hardware support collect? If it does not i would still be interested in knowing if there is any laptop that can match the price. I have checked but can't find. Any suggestions are welcome

Does anyone know the link for a good 130 PSU UK/France?

    Thanks

I just got the G73 for $1350 total with shipping but Newegg has raised the price. They told me it would come down or go on sale. Add my own BlueRay reader and another hard drive (2nd drive bay) and that's one killer computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220695

As far as Dell I can only relate my experience. Whether they are purposely lying or not; who knows? Personally the two ladies that I talked with in Order Modification were very nice but neither knew anything but basic english and it was obvious they were reading off a script. I think they just had no idea the difference between screens. But they both said they were going to get the answer from their supervisors. Either the supers didn't know (which is way poor) or they lied. The US sales rep I believe did know the difference and she flat out told me she was upgrading me to the 1080P screen and even quoted me the upgrade price! Now if it's not even available and hasn't been for over two months wouldn't she know that? I'm not saying she was purposely lying for sure but man if it walks and quacks like a duck......

I don't know anything about the screen you are getting. I've read some that say it's a nice screen and I've read others that said they didn't like it. Everyone has an opinion. Good luck.

I am not sure on European pricing. Here you can get G73 from $1400 - 1700, depending on options and availability.
For the screen, first, there is a big price difference ($150 here), second is it is much better quality.

You think in such an internationalized world we live in, there's only evil capitalism in the US? :p
Here in Europe it's worse, we don't only have some evil capitalism, but also a lot of evil taxes ;) So, and the companies and the government is screwing us! :p

Umm, guess I`ll have to look for a linux equivalent as thats my main os
update to my issue, a guy is coming tomorrow (thurs) as the part they are bringing is now in stock again (another friggin motherboard)..they just replaced it once, gave me no front speaker output, just woofer, and I still have the original problem, so what are the odds I`m gonna need ANOTHER mainboard?
The mainboard that I have now has A05 on it, and what it came with, is that throttled?

It doesnt matter which BIOS you are using throttling will still occur without throttlestop. Dell hasnt released a BIOS to fix throttling on 1747 yet. They have only released a BIOS for the sxps 1645.

Yes I was referring to the despots and progressives that think capitalism is evil. Those that want to abandon our constitution, create socialism, and raise taxes. IT DOESN'T WORK but when economies get bad and people get despirate, socialism is very appealing. People need to look at history. Small government and the free market is the only way to go.

One of my favorite quotes: “The two enemies of the people are criminals and government, so let us tie the second down with the chains of the Constitution so the second will not become the legalized version of the first.” -Thomas Jefferson

But this is not a political thread/forum so sorry. I'll post no more about it.

No problem for me, as long as we keep it short ;)

Btw, here in Europe some have ordered the studio with ati 5730. Now Dell is saying it will be the ati 5650 and not the 5730, they made a mistake.
For those who ordered with the 5730: one member on a Dutch forum will get his one delivered soon and on his order he still has the 5730 written in the specs. I'll keep you informed about what he really will get.

My order also states 5730. There is no difference between the 5650 and 5730 though so I am not bothered either way. I expect Dell will downclock it which ever version they put in.

You can always o/c with GPUTool or RivaTuner, so it all depends which one has more headroom, and I think 5730 is a little better in that respect.

My guess is the 5730 will find it's way to the XPS 16, and the Stusio 17 will keep the 5650.
Same sort of difference (clockspeeds) compared to the 4670 vs. 4650 in older/current XPS 16 and Studio 17

It appears the A07 BIOS release has not fixed the issues, throttling is still present and the Power bricks are getting extremely hot as stated on the Dell forums...Seems to me Dell is going to have to send out new 120 or 130 watt Power supplies to replace the obviously underpowered 90Watt ones...My Studio17 i7core is in production and scheduled to be delivered by March 11th, we shall see what happens...

Yeah I do plan to. Looking at ATI's specs the 5650 and 5730 are identical, even clock speed can be the same. The Asus N61/71 guys are getting nice overclocks on their 5730's (750/1000) so I am hoping we can get the same if the cooling is adequate.

My only worry though is throttling. Overclocking is going to up the wattage and may push it over the edge. Still not long now til I get it so I will be testing extensively whilst in my return window

The guy came btw, with another mainboard, and replaced it, and the speakers work ok now, so I`m back square one... After explaining my problem YET AGAIN (ARGHHH) to another non english speaking useless tech person, its getting picked up for repair.. After the crap Ive gone through I deserve a straight out new laptop.
Is there no way I can ring "Dell" and get someone who speaks better english who understands me and doesnt "umm" like they have no idea what I just said??
Its this and the way they handled my problem when Ive paid for 3yr enhanced warranty, that will make me think to go somewhere else next time I buy a laptop

You should be able to make enough noise to get to escalation support. Unfortunately non-business Dell support, much as non-business HP support (and most other companies) is pretty bad.

Dell's policy is if after 3 attempts to fix an issue and it still does not work properly you are eligable for a replacement of equal or better value, you just have to be firm with them....

I bought a 1745 from the outlet. It was locking up from throttling and I had a couple other complaints; a dead pixel on the 1080p screen and the left mouse button had a cheap rattly sound like it had been worn out. I chatted with technical support, at first she was going to have it arranged to be sent back and fixed. I told her my concern of them not being able to fix the issue which would leave me stuck with the system because I would then be past the point where I could return it for a refund. She told me to wait a minute so she could speak with her supervisor. She came back and asked if I was be okay that they replace it with a new system of equal or better specs. I was blown away, I took the offer in a heart beat.

Do you have a 1745 or a 1747? There is no throttling on a 1745.

I think a guy ive been dealing with is going to ring me to see how the 2nd "repair" went, and when he does i`ll be kicking up a LOT of fuss...see if it gets me anywhere....

Well, my laptop just shipped with the 1080p screen. Took a long time, but it's coming, finally. And yes, it really is the 1080p

Hello Bukket; just curious, have you received your Studio17 and if so, are you happy with your choice? More important, have you had any problems with it. Thank you for any reply you might offer!

I think you mean someone else. I've had my 2nd system for 3 weeks now. I sent the first one back since I wasn't happy with the 900p screen. I love the 1080p screen and since I got this one from the Outlet for $1250 it would be hard to find something comparable for the same price. It has the B+RG 1080p screen, wireless N, dual 500 gb drives, and it's Promise Pink. Worth every penny to me :)

I paid $1300 for the first one with the lower res screen and it just wasn't worth the price. It had a few other minor problems but the screen was just unacceptable.

This one will be perfect if they fix the fan cycling, the 1080p video playback, and the throttling. But even with the problems this screen is worth the money I paid and I'm happy with it.

Another problem is the hot power adapter. I hadn't noticed it until I had to convert some video for the iPod touch. The adapter was so hot I couldn't hold it. I'm waiting to see if Dell is going to offer a larger adapter and if they don't I'll buy my own. The video playback should be fixed with software updates from ATI and Adobe flash and I hope Dell puts out a decent BIOS to fix the fan issue.

I hope you get yours soon.

Will report back when I get it. I already have Throttlestop and a pa-15 150w adapter ready to go when I get it =)

Anyone has an idea when they will realease this with Ati 5000 series?
    Any USB3 coming?
    New intel wifi cards?
Are they going to push their old stock until the end of the year or what ?

On the dell thread, someone tried to cook an egg on it just to prove the point. Temperature reached 78 plus degrees centigrade! "Fix" is to buy 130W or higher PSU on ebay or wait till Dell admits they are wrong about PSUs, same as with XPS 1647 and ships free 130W power supplies (in exchange of 90W).

There is a workaround for 1080p playgback, which involves using beta 10.3 drivers and flash 10.1 beta 2. That works well for me, at least when using Firefox. I've had issues installing Flash beta for IE.
