I've been following the Dell thread and waiting for some fixes. I don't want to spend the money on an adapter if Dell is going to get off their butts and replace them.

I spent a day trying the modded drivers and had too many issues. Might give the beta version a try when I feel like spending more time troubleshooting for Dell. Kind of sick of doing it right now.

Well, it finally came in. Posting on it right now. 73 days after ordering it. I'll try not to think about that.

1080p screen is beautiful and bright. I am happy with it. Now I have to go through and remove some of the bloatware...

    Hi All,
Can anyone hear tell me if their Y060P MOD,LCD,17.3,FHD,WLED,90%,AUO display has any certain letterings or any identifing label or words across the display or on the laptop itself to signify that it is infact this diplay. Reason I ask is because I ordered a refurbished Studio 1747 that is supposed to have this display and my screen says nothing on it so how will I know for sure it is correct. I would not have started to wonder this except some other things that should be with it and in it are not the same as description at Dells Outlett Center had desribed it as having so no I am a little learry. I just would like to be 100% sure I am getting what I paid for.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me,
    jdtbodean :)

Oh gosh, please don't install the 10.3 drivers What a headache that was removing that off my system. Catalyst control center wouldn't work anymore. After that it gave me a bunch of errors after I uninstalled it. Just wait for a offical dell fix. They are working on it.

Glad you got it in. Care to tell me if there are any wording or any significant markings that distinguish the 1080P Screen so I will know for sure I got what I paid for with my system. I asked this question in a post but have had no responce.

    Thanks

On the packing list on the box says FULL HD 1080p screen. Made sure when I started up the laptop that the screen was indeed 1080. Otherwise there really isn't any way to tell.

Thanks for responding. I had some other things left out of the order is why I got worried when there were no signifing lettering or anything on the display other than one can confirm it is in 1900X1200 Resolution. I would have thought that a RGB screen would have some adjustments for contrast, color, white balance, this sort of adjustments since it is supposed to be accurate at potraying accurate colors. With no way to adjust them how can one calibrate it?

Via the Catalyst Control Center tool you can make your own color profile.
Look for a tab that says 'Color' in the advanced section of the screen properties..
Oh, on Win7 this may be different (I'm still on XP). :)

If you are running 1920 x 1080 resolution then you have the the right screen.

    How does it look?

You can adjust your colors in CCC. Right click the desktop and the top option is Catalyst Control Panel. You can also calibrate your display through windows.

Wow, this thing is great with throttlestop and a 150w ps. On Dragon Age Origins, I can run max settings and it runs smooth like glass. The laptop stays fairly cool as well. Screen kicks butt, too.

    the FHD-screen is fantastic, isn't it? ;)

btw, using CCC for color correction works perfect in win7 and ubuntu
i reduced red to 90% a few weeks ago and it looks absolute perfect since

oh, and i reduced brightness to 60%
with 100% you can use it as a lamp without problems XD

    but one thing:
when playing it gets really hot for me!
played a bit allods the last days and the core-temps went up to 80° within minutes and 90° after a while... after an hour or two i had tops about 97° o_O
(real-temp told me the processor-temp-status even changed to "log" for one core, don't exactly know what that means, but its not "ok"... i've got a screenshot if anyone wants to see)
had to stop gaming after that from time to time to let it cool down a bit...

yesterday i noticed this is only happening when using the laptop on a solid ground (no, im not using the flat 6-cell battery). but when using on my "lap", it stays around 70-80° even after hours of gaming (not "cool" but much better)
    great construction, dell...

but the game played perfect, even on 90w PS i got multipliers about 12-15 for every core (and PS doesn't get any hotter then with A05 in my opinion)

Ah, the i7-720/820 option is back on the Dell UK website. Alas, it's about 300 pounds more expensive than when it was available back in December/January. Still a 90W power supply as well.

Hi, Thanks for the ifo on the CCC and color settings. The screen looks great.
There are adjustments galore now that you told me of the ccc options. I am coming from nVidea Gforce so not fammilar with ATI software yet. There should be no issues with setting this thing up properly for photo editing with all the adjustments available once I am into the CCC color optios as wel as the contrast, brightness, gama, and many other adjustment settings you can make within the software. I love this screen now that I have found these :) options.

if you find "the perfect" configurations, feel free to tell us ;)

i've noticed that the fan is never running at full speed... only sometimes when switching the laptop on, but never after that...
maybe a bios-problem? (i wonder if bios A47 is able to fix the problems in 20 years)
and i never get this heat when doing normal tasks (not even when looking FHD-videos), only when gaming

There has been plenty of talk on the Dell forums about getting the 90 watt adapters replaced. I really didn't think my adapter was getting that hot. The other day I converted some videos for my ipod and it was hot but still touchable. Tonight I decided to play the Warhammer free trial for a couple of hours and made the mistake of reaching down and grabbing my adapter. Luckily it was only with my fingertips because I got burned. I got on chat with tech support and tried to get them to send me a 130 watt adapter but they wouldn't. The tech ended up calling me and his manager even talked to me to assure me that they were going to do something about this. They are suppose to contact me Monday or Tuesday so we will see what they say.

They wanted to send me another 90 watt adapter and I refused. I swapped my adapter with another 90 watt that I have and it is just as hot. Now I'm just using the adapter when I have to charge the battery. I just don't trust it at all.

In my case the 90 watt adaptor got very hot, above 70C (160F)on the surface, enough for cooking an egg.
Also I began experiencing system freezes two weeks ago after upgrading to BIOS A07, and needed to do hard reboots and therefore losing all my work.... and time.

I submitted complaints about the hot adaptor to the certifying UL agency, and told them the problem that DELL is using this low powered adaptor with a machine that sucks the juice out of it, and that they should use a 130 Watts instead.
I wrote to the DELL customer care here in Canada and telling the problems in this thread (throttling, system freeze, hot adaptor) and the problems aknnowledged by the Dell engineers on the DELL community forum thread.
They gave me right away a return number through UPS, and I am a waiting the full refund next week.
I am so glad to be free from this whole nightmare. Who needs to pay for a 2000$ computer and experience such amounts of problems ( esp. the system freeze, and the underpowered system which we got that was advertised to us as a powerful multimedia house).

Anyway, the agency wrote me back and wants a clear photo picture of the adaptor. Since I do not have anymore this laptop (!),could someone write to the agency below. As ma ny people complain, the faster action we will get through this official way.

You may forward your complaints to the certifier of the A/C adaptor below, since they are investigating the problem.

    They answered me:

" Your report has been forwarded to me for handling. To assist us in investigating the reported issue, please provide me with photos of the marking labels on both the AC adaptor and the laptop, showing the UL Marks and the product designations for the AC adaptor and the laptop.

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention and assisting us in maintaining the UL Public Safety Mission.

Wanted to update everyone on my issue. I had a message on my phone 2 hours after chatting/talking to tech support and they are sending me the 130 watt adapter.

They asked me to not use my computer until it was resolved. I'm still using it but I only use the adapter when I have to recharge the battery and I have the adapter on a hot plate.

Hopefully the report I made will help in getting Dell to take care of this for everyone.

Just received an email from dell, i assume most people have it too..
Subject: Your Dell Studio 1747 Laptop

    Dear Customer,

The Studio Laptop you recently purchased maybe affected by a software issue which can result in you hearing 7 beep tones immediately after an attempt to start the system, followed by the system failing to complete startup. A newly-updated BIOS has been developed to address this issue, and we strongly recommend that you upgrade to this new BIOS.

Download and run the latest BIOS release 1747A07 (A07), located on Support.Dell.Com website. Select your country from the dropdown on the upper left side of the page then enter 1747A07 in the search box on the top of the page and follow the link to the BIOS download.

Otherwise please find the direct link for Bios download :

    ftp://ftp.dell.com/bios/1747A07_win.EXE

When executed, this file will update the BIOS on your system.

Should you have any issue related to the Bios upgrade, please contact your local Dell Technical Support at 0844 338 1000.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

    -----
pity my laptop has been sent back in for repair !

Hi everyone, I just a have a quick question.

As the general feeling on here is that the 90W adapter is too low power for the studio 17, does anyone know where I can get a 130W adapter? Also, I'm pretty new to laptops and was wondering if all adapters are universal (ie will an unbranded adapter fit my dell laptop).

    Thanks

Hey, ive bought a 1745 early january and had things fine until now.

Im not too sure if it's a problem with the actual optical drive or the software and drivers to go with it but sometimes when i put disks into it it makes a funny sound like its not managing to fix it into place or something like that and then dosent work. Even if i try to eject it, nothing happens so i have to restart the computer (which takes forever when the problem is happening) to get it to reset itself.

Also, today, it still reads the DVD's and CD's but when, let's say, the roxio burn, or the windows media player comes up to play it, or even the game, it then goes non responsive and won't play. Do you think this is a problem with the optical drive, the drivers or might it even be a virus?

    Thanks.

Also, if I get the i5 model (which is likely since I don't really have the money for an i7) will I experience throttling/heat issues? I'm thinking its less likely since the i5 uses less power?

Ok so I have the 1747 with 1600x900 LED screen, and I've had it since December and tried to get used to it but the field of vision and brightness on the lower half of the screen that makes the colours washed out is just too much for my eyes.. I had a problem with regarding the screen that got me a replacement and I was hoping a different one might have been better, but its not. I should have fronted the extra £80 for the 1080 when I ordered it :( I feel like ringing them up to ask if I can still get the screen and get someone down to install it (I have 3 yr in-home warranty) but it means dealing with more indiglish speaking call centre operators...it was damn hard work last time.. Do you think I`d get the screen? and is it really that much better?

I hate to tell you but it is that much better. I couldn't use the 900p screen at all. Not only did it look bad but it killed my eyes and gave me a headache. It felt like it was out of focus and there was no way to improve it. I returned mine but then they quit selling the 1080p screen so I haunted Dell Outlet until the 1747 showed up and I found the system that had everything I wanted.

The 1080p is crystal clear and brilliant. It is the first laptop I've owned that I can read for hours and I get no eye strain. It also has good viewing angles so you don't have to hunt for the right spot to get the whole screen to look the same. Games look incredible, too. I'll never own another laptop that doesn't have this type of screen.

I don't believe that you can get your screen changed since you are past your return date.

I`ll try anyway, since its been replaced already and ive had to put up with a bit of hassle from them..
I cant understand why they`d bundle such a crappy screen with such a nice spec machine...if it was an intel video chipset or something with a low end cpu then maybe.... Im disappointed in dell this time around, after having 2 others..

Yes, after waiting 3 mos for my 1747...and no EDD I cancelled it and moved to the xps16 as the 1747 no longer had the 1080p screen..in Canada anyway...to get the RGB though you had to switch off from the I7 720 though...went to the 620 and added an ssd ...

Well its not looking good... They said they cant do anything about it, but they tried to put me thru to customer care (I rang tech support I didnt have a directr number for CC) and I got disconnected, now they are closed till monday...Argh
I dont know if I`m going to get what I want, so looks like I might be selling this one, making a loss, and sadly taking my custom elsewhere in future, which is sad as Ive been a fan of dell upto now and got a lot of friends buy from my recommendation..
They might say they dont have the sceens anymore, but of course they do, how else do people get theirs fixed...so if they would rather lose a customer than replace a screen, so be it. Wish I had not upgraded to 3yr warranty as well! Doh

You can't blame Dell for this. They have one of the best return policies I've ever seen and you could have exchanged it for the upgraded screen during that time.

I'm sorry you've got buyer's remorse and I bet you can sell your laptop for pretty close to what you paid for it. You have it in hand so the buyer doesn't have to wait for it to be built. Warranty and service tag can be transferred to the new owner.

Its not so much about blaming them, and I havent spoken to them properly yet about it so who knows what the outcome will be, and I know I made a mistake in waiting too long to try and get used to the screen, although the 2 visits by a clumsy 'engineer' and 2 wasted mainboards and sending back for a week was a waste of some of that time, but if after I explain my problem, after paying for something so expensive, upgrading to 3yr warranty and buying a 130w psu that I now know I could have had for free, if its too much trouble to have me pay a few extra £`s which isnt much in relation to the cost of the whole laptop, then my fault or not, I will just cut my losses and find something else,
As for getting as much as I paid for it, I just hope I can find someone who likes the screen... tho I am lucky that I saved quite a bit as it was on offer..

My quest for a screen thats NOT a complete piece of .... continues
After calling them and being passed around like an unwanted stepchild to this dept that dept and given 3 different numbers to ring, someone finally tried to help me source the full HD 1080 screen and told me he couldnt find one available from anywhere as its not an option now, as I knew..... he said I could speak to the manager so I spoke to him and went through my problem the 6th or 7th time (I was extremely annoyed at this point (note to dell, please make sure once I give my service tag and explain my problem, the next person I get transferred to knows all about it without me explaining it all over again!)).
He said he`d try and find one and a price and call me back later. he called back and said he`s still trying and he`d call back again by a certain time, he did and I am getting one :)
    persistence pays off !

oh one quick question.... how will I know its the proper full hd b+rg 1080 and not some plain old 1920x1200 screen?

    Hey Guys & Gals,

This is way dumb but since I have never used or owned laptop untill this one here I need to ask one really dum I am sure question. I bought mine as refurbe from the Outlett Center. It did'nt say it had any Bluetooth installed on the configuration page of this pc. Anyway when I first start it up it always shows bluetooth as being enanbled on the system start-up just before OS loads on up. In the bios when I looked to try and figure this out it to shows bluetooth enabled. Now it didn't show as supposed to have any bluetooth according to configuration but is it possible it has a bluetooth installed internally anyway since it shows enabled all the time. I dont see anything in device manager that would lead to me to believe it has a bluetooth module however unless it is marked in some wording I am not fammillar with. What do you think? Any others that know for sure they have no bluetooth installed still showing it as enabled like mine.
    Dell 1747
    Core i7 (620)QM
RGB or whatever they call it is on it.
    DUAL 500GB 7200 RPM
    1GB ATI VIDEO

    Thanks for any info

it's 1920 x 1080. And it's the only 1080p screen ever made for the studio 17 AFAIK. So if you get the 1080 it is going to be the full hd b+rg screen.

Oh yeah I called in to get my 130w replacement adapter, and they gave me the old huge brick pa-13 adapter instead of the new slimline one. And they gave me the wrong power cord to connect to the ac adapter. A 2 prong one instead of the correct 3 prong connector.

Called to dell and they are sending in the correct power cord, but I am stuck with the old pa-13 brick instead of the pa-4e slim 130w adapter.

#1. On your order it will indicate an AUO screen
#2. Go into device manager and check the Hardware ID. It will be AUO149D
#3. standard 1920x1200 panels are physically and ergonomically incompatible with the 1747 chassis

For those who were curious, the 920XM does work in the 1747. I just installed one and let me say the dis assembly is NOT for the faint of heart. The 1737 was a quick CPU swap. This took quite a while, as you have to remove the entire system board to get to the CPU.

While I was in there, I went ahead and cleaned off the Dell compounds and installed some nice MX-2 on the the CPU and GPU. I also have a spare PA-15 (150W) adapter for testing.

It can be shown as enabled or disabled in the BIOS, but that doesn't mean you actually have a BT module installed.

One you install the touch controls and BT software, if it doesn't show up, you don't have one. If you did have one, it would also be listed specifically on your order.

You can order the module from Dell or eBay for fairly cheap ($20 USD). Installation is a bugger, though. It is not located in an easy to access spot. Instead, it must be installed on the system board and requires quite a bit of disassembly to gain access to the interface. I just installed two of them on client machines (WXGA+ 1747's) and to say Dell made these new Studio 17's user accessible unfriendly is an understatement.

an engineer came to fit my 1920x1080 screen I bought, and has given me guess what.....
another bloody 1600x900... how much more incompetent can they get.
Ive been on the phone again going over the same old ground again and they are adamant they have sent me a full hd screen, and is different to the rubbish 1600x900 I had... I`m pulling my hair out...

I have a guy coming tomorrow(friday 12th) supposedly with the correct screen (I doubt it very bloody much), and the guy on the phone said he`d attach a note to the request asking the engineer to test it and see that its 1920 resolution...er excuse me? He/They should know WHAT they are bringing already?? Seems kind of unprofessional and 'dirty' to sell me a 1920x1080 screen knowing full well I was not getting one...unless these people really are that thick...
We shall see tomorrow, and I`m sure after 1 week return to factory for repair and a 4th engineer visit I`ll be starting from square one again with the call centre staff

You need to escalate this. Don't leave it hanging with same level of people. Tell them you need to speak with escalation manager since this has been a complete FUBAR on Dell's part or you are going to call BBB (or whatever equivalent is if not in US). Heck, try to get email for Dell's corporate board or [email protected]. YOu would be surprised how often that works. I had very similar episode with a high-end Nokia phone which was promptly resolved once I sent a nastygram to their official corporate board address.
