that reallysuck, coz thant the only way og 5.1 surround audio is HDMI. Wich needs a really expensive A/V Reciever witch processes HDMI audio. (cheap ones only have Pass-through) /Still hoping that it doesn't have a DPC latency problem, so USB soundcard is an option too/
This is a big Con for a multimedia notebook.
no analogue 5.1 either. Can't understand why notebook witch 3x 3.5jack aren't able to re-map the jacks. Older laptops could do this, lowest quality desktop mainboards can do this.

    You're really lucky!!!

Dell managed to cancel my order without my consent (although I called and verified that they got my reply e-mail for the missing BT part). I called a salesman and he could activate my order with some modifications for the unavailable BT card.

Now the EDD is December 23rd (as said, it WAS November 16th). They must be kidding... :mad2:

I don't see how this corresponds to a max. 10 day pre-production. I see them, sending me another e-mail about unavailable built-in cameras in a week or so, leaving me the option to cancel or proceed without the camera.

And in a year from now, there's nothing more than an empty box they're shipping to me, because all other parts were depleted in the mean time. :swoon:

    Hi,
Novice here. I saw this and am confused. I am ordering a Studio 1745, and it has a Core 2 Duo.

Are most of these discussions about a different 1745?

    http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/studio_great_deals/fs.aspx?refid=studio_great_deals&s=dhs&cs=19

The deal on the right, as of November 6, 2009. The deals change. Just today, the discount went from $544 to $494. Luckily I printed out the page showing the higher discount, so they are honoring it. I am getting this computer for $934, which includes a custom monitor that cost an extra $85.00. So, earlier today, this computer cost $849, and tonight it cost $899.
I'm pretty sure this is a good price, I can't find the same components at a better price.

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T6600 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/2MB cache), 4GB3 Shared Dual Channel DDR3 at 1066MHz, 500GB4 SATA HDD (7200rpm), 512MB2 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570, 2 year warranty, Dell Wireless 1397 802.11g Half Mini-Card, Slot Load Blu-ray Disc (BD) Combo (Reads BD and Writes to DVD/CD), 17.3” HD+ (900p) Bright LED Display with TrueLife™ and Camera, 15 month macafee, plus $25 gift card.

    Is this a good deal?

Depends on what you're going to use your notebook for.
If you'll only use it for internet browsing, office processing (Word, Excel,...) and some casual gaming you'll be just fine. No worry.
If gaming is quiet important to you, you could upgrade your cpu to a P7450 or P8700. Their higher FSB (1066 instead of 800) will give a faster response between cpu and ram.
Isn't 1333 Mhz DDR3 RAM with a 800 Mhz fsb a bit of overkill? I don't understand Dell here. Or am I wrong?

Should be. And I think you waited long enough. Congrats!!! :)

    [EDIT]
@Live4Racing: Brief us, when your package arrives (maybe you could also post some images). It is somehow unbelievable that I ordered five days earlier and have to wait at least 5 weeks longer...

How does the 1GB Radeon 4650 compare to 512MB Radeon 4570? Is there much of a difference?

Yes, a considerable difference, though it's not really due to the size of the memory, but the GPUs themselves. The 4570 scores on average 3500 - 3600 3dMark06, whereas the 4650 scores on average 6280. Not quite double, but a massive performance boost.

These are the mobility versions in the Studio laptops - I should have made it clear in my message, but im guessing you knew that? Is it the Studio XPS16 that has a non mobile version ?

Yes I am well aware that they are mobility versions; the scores I gave you were for the mobility versions.

The difference is that the 4570 has a 64bit bus, whereby the 4650 has a 128bit bus. In gaming terms, that can make a lot of difference.

I went for the i7-720 with the 4650 and a blu ray drive. The screen is 900p.
Just charging right now. So far all I can say is that this thing is wide!!! Surprisingly though its not too heavy and the power brick is actually really slim which is nice. Overall its very slick and I am impressed! I will report more later on.
I am a pretty big amateur when it comes to laptops so any tests you guys want me to do will have to be explained to me very slowly!!!

wow, that should be a great machine.
Lets start the bombing of test request. (youll gonna have some i guess)
DPC lateny check: (required for external audio, is a big problem on 1737)
If you could plz do this with Wi-Fi on. (connectivity not required, just the card to be on)
    1,Download: This
    2, run the app
3, watch the bar for a couple of minutes
If bars stay under the green line its great, under the yellow line still good. Any bars go into the red, there's a problem.
I'd like to know the highest bars. If it ever goes into the red that's bad for me :(
    thank you for doing it

    Thanks mate!

Please can you run GPUZ and let us know what the ATI 4650's clocks are? I want to see if Dell has downclocked it as they sometimes do.
    http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/

Can you also run 3dmark06 and post your scores?
    http://www.futuremark.com/benchmarks/3dmark06/download/

Whilst running 3dmark06 can you also please run HWmonitor to check your temps?
    http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php

All the programs are free and it will be greatly appreciated :)

The new Studio 17 will become available with the i7 cpu any day now over here in .NL, and i'm looking foreward to it!

@ MintChris: I have a simple question for you: how hot does the AC adaptor get? Can you still handle it after, let's say an hour of normal use,or do you need gloves??
I've read the XPS16's AC adapter can become quite hot (70 degrees celcius\160 degrees fahrenheit) after some use.

It gets hot enough that you wouldnt want to leave it plugged in unnecessarily. I would say you could handle it after an hour but its definitely hot.

OK I am going to attempt to do a few of these tests in the morning.
So far everything seems good. Looks alone this thing is pretty sweet. The screen is nice and I cant imagine at all needing the higher res screen. Speakers are loud enough and the media buttons at the top of the keyboard are a bonus. I am having a slight issue with the blu ray player but I think I might just need an update so I will post more on that later.
I am not really a gamer but I do play FSX which is a very CPU intensive game. So far the 720 seems to be handling it quite well. I am getting 30FPS with frames locked at 30 with most sliders either completely to the right or close to it.
Any questions just let me know.

Brilliant thanks mate, I am so grateful.

Also how hot do the external temps get whilst playing FSX? Is any part of the laptop particularily hot? (ie palm rest, trackpad, keyboard. My sxps 16 gets so hot whilst gaming I find it uncomfortable so hopefully this 1745 will replace it)

wow that puts my mind at rest! My sxps gets so hot I could fry eggs on the touchpad and palmrest whilst gaming.

I love everything else about it but the heat. Its such an issue it has to go :(
Still I think this 1745 is a worthy successor :)

Have you had chance yet to run GPUZ? I am interested to see the clocks and if it is DDR3 or DDR2 on the ati 4650

I ordered mine on 9/23/2009. Core i7. I have now been delayed the fourth time. New ETA is 11/19. Anyone who ordered after me get theirs already? I stayed with the 720QM.

    Thanks.

I ordered on Sept 30th and got mine 2 days ago. Core i7 and all. Got delayed til Dec 17th but then showed up at my place only 3 days late. Funny thing is that I got an email from Dell today saying they are sorry for the delay and hope to have my new laptop to me soon. Crazy Dell people!

    Thx for your response.

It has been reported some Studio's, and even the XPS 16 have bad/cracking sound output on the built-in speakers, even at 50% volume.
On behalve of another Tweaker comes the question: "How is the sound on the new Studio 17"?

    Thanx in advance!

I've read that the Studio 1747 (i7) can be ordered by phone and/or chat in some Central European countries, but is not advertised in the webshop.

You may want to find out if they (sales) can make you a good offer. ;)

Really nice to hear it´s not a warm laptop.

Looking for the same setup up when it´s available in Denmark.

How about fan noise .. ?

    ;)

I have got a sxps 16 and it has the best speakers I have ever owned in a laptop (which is quite a lot :) )
The worst problem with the studio range is the IDT audio, if you use the IDT audio drivers you will get loads of problems with windows sounds and skype etc clicking/popping/switching to speakers if using headphones. I just use the default W7 audio drivers

Fan noise is alright. Its obviously audible but not obnoxiously so.
The laptop does get semi warm at some points but its miles ahead of anything I have owned before. The power brick does get pretty hot after about an hour and a half but I just to limit it to less than an hour at a time.

Just a short review of my Dell experience so far.

24/10: Ordered new Dell Studio 1745 (EDD: 16/11)
    27/10: Pre-production
03/11: E-mail from Dell about missing Bluetooth module (2 hours later: answer to Dell to continue without BT)
04/11: I called Dell to assure they got my e-mail -> Dell: "Everything should be just fine."
05/11: Order cancelled (I then called Dell and a nice salesman could reactivate my order with a neoprene sleeve and the facial recognition software as compensation for the unavailable BT; new EDD: 23/12, but he promised to prioritise the order)
    05/11: Pre-production
    08/11 (noon): Production
    08/11 (evening): Pre-production again ?!?
    10/11: Production
14/11: Shipped from China with Walsh Western
    ...

Does anyone have any idea why it was built in china, because I thought Lodz, Poland serves Europe. I read something about minor build quality in China. Can someone confirm this?

Never heard of Walsh Western. Is it going to be picked up by UPS at some point? And how long will it take to be shipped to Germany (it says 4 days)?

Probably not the most quiet but it is still very quiet and when fan noise does kick in its very low and un-intrusive.

    Okay, thx for answering! :)

Not much info or feedback at this point on the net. I haven´t been able to find it at least. Cant even find a decent video of the Dell Studio 1747 on YouTube yet. Æv! <-danish for that sucks ;-)

But think the 1747 will be my first laptop.

Just waiting for Core i7 option to be available in DK.

So you ppl with the 1747 just let the info come as a steady river of information. I´m for one is sucking it up as candy! ;o)

Ok, firstly, apologies if I'm putting this in the wrong part of the forum but basically I need your help regarding the new Studio 17. Below is a little table of options for which deal to go for and what specs etc. I am currently a uni student who works a lot with Pro-Tools, Flash and Photoshop. I also need to be able to edit video.
After lots of painful, strenuous research I still am unclear as to whether I need a 1gb GPU for these sort of programs. However, the general consensus seems to be that one should go for the best they can afford. So here are the options...

My concern about the 9cell battery is why the top option includes an extra 6cell. I'm not sure if the protrusion of the battery is as much of a con as I believe it is. Some people argue that it provides better airflow and a nice keyboard angle... Also, should I definately be avoiding 5400rpm HDD?
The other thing to note is that this is to be a birthday/christmas present from my parents which makes me feel very guilty about choosing a high cost model!

EDIT: I will be paying the price without VAT.

Please help. I have been deliberating on which one to get for the last 3 months and I still am no further to deciding.

    Thanks,
    Peter.

The vast majority of Dell notebooks (like 90% or more) are either built in Xiamen, China or Penang, Malaysia. It depends on what notebook you ordered and where you are having it shipped to as to which factory will make it.

This is untrue. They use the same process, guides and components to build your notebook in Xiamen or Penang.

Walsh Western is a global logistics company. What this means is that Dell uses them to get the goods from their factories to other factories and also to your national delivery hub. From there it will be sent to a local courier, who will delivery it to your door. The delivery process can take more or less time, it really is dependent on so many factors that we can't tell you how long it will take. However, the estimate you are given by Walsh Western and/or Dell is normally pretty accurate once Walsh Western have the package. Logistics is what they do, and they do it pretty well to be honest.

Thank you for your answer Fragilexx.

I just thought it would make more sense to build the notebook in Poland if the order comes from Germany. If, however, there are certain plants for certain products, that's obviously the way it works.

Let the final waiting begin...

    hi

my old dell is on it's very last legs.. could anyone say when the new studio 17s might be in the outlet?

Can't really afford the £525. Will it drop after Christmass?

    thank you.

I'm afraid my crystal ball isn't working right now....

Honestly, we can't know for sure, but it's not likely to be in the outlet for a little while yet - I mean it's only just been released. Dell doesn't normally drop the prices straight away, but I would expect some form of January sale to happen - and depending upon how sales go in the lead up to festive season, we may see pre-Christmas discounts. It's a bit of an unknown this year at any cost, given the current economic situation.

Oh yes, Dell does have a hub in Poland; I believe they recently moved a lot of their European sites into that location. However for the most part they deal with desktops rather than notebooks AFAIK.
