Hi
thanks for your thoughts. Am tempted (/may be forced) to get one on credit.

See if you can hold out until January; and pray Dell has a bad Christmas -
i saw that in US it's possible to order a full hd B+rg led display,
witch kind of display is it? the same of xps 16 (rgb led)? -

I got my 1555 on credit, but only because they had a deal where no interest is charged if you pay it off in the first 9 months. I intend to do that before the interest kicks in.

"[... The optional RGBLED display provides a 100% color gamut for truer, more vibrant colors. [...]" (-> However, Anandtech writes "[...] color gamut of 112% of the Adobe RGB 1998 standard [...]".)
- Full HD Widescreen 16.0 inch RGBLED LCD (1920x1080) W/2.0 MP [add $175 or $5/month1]
Studio 17:

- 17.3” Full HD (1080p) B+RG LED Display with TrueLife™ and Camera [add $150 or $5/month1]
My guess is these screens are (unfortunatly) not the same. -
Hey, I received my 1745 on the 11th. Very impressed so far. The 900p screen is really good. I was unsure whether to get the 1080p but I think I made the right choice. I settled for the P7450 processor and I must admit it's a bit of a bottleneck for gaming with the 1Gb graphics card. Looking into upgrading the processor already :S I'm thinking of putting in a t9600. I think I'll wait for someone else to try first! Possibly some step by step instructions.
-
Thanks in advance -
There you go, looks like the memory clock has been knocked back 100mhz. I can run Borderlands with all the settings whacked right up except the CPU intensive ones (Dynamic shadows, lens flare) and it's real smooth. I'm pretty sure even with the CPU intensive options off, the CPU is still a bottleneck. -
Brilliant thanks, sent you rep.
I thought they would downclock it but thankfully thats not too bad. The sony vaio was clocked at 450/667.
I got a date of 22/12/09 for mine, what is up with dell at the moment. -

This is with the i7 and the 900p screen. Did you guys order something different? -

-
hi. ordered on 11/2, delivery date set to 12/3, but still on pre-production :/ (i went for the FHD-screen)
has anyone tried running ubuntu on it yet? if not, can anyone try please? (just use a 9.10 live disc)
i know ubuntu does not support the i7 turbo mode but what about the rest, are there problems?
would be great if anyone could check it out -
Welp. I ordered my Core i7 on 9/23 and expect my 5th delay tomorrow. I talked to a Business rep at Dell HQ in Austin and decided to cancel my order and reorder. Now there are better options for the Studio 17 Core i7 version so I was able to get a better machine.
Hope this doesn't repeat itself. Are others receiving their Studio 17 Core i7 machines already? -
Hello I ordered on 11/10 delivery date set to 1/6 :/
Can somebody test Studio 17 in 3dmark06? and write any more information about Studio -

I ordered on 16/11/2009 and Estimated Delivery Date is 31/12/2009 !!!!!
I didnt know that it have to take a month and a half to build one laptop !!!.
When I order my dell studio 17 there is no upgrade on wifi card so I get the dell 1397 something. Can I just replace it with 5300 form ebay?
Ps. I m in UK -
Mine was ordered on the 10th and I was lucky enough to get the intel 5100 included. But dont worry it is really easy to replace, I did the same on my studio 1555. You can pick up the 5100/5300 cheaply on ebay, just make sure you buy the 1/2 height cards

Intel is going the wrong ways this year. Delaying new processors and technology, insufficient supply capacity, unclear communication,...
Hope AMD benefits from this opportunity. Can't wait how their announced Fusion technology will work in 2011. Sounds very promising! -
I'd guess Dell has (pre-)orderes a fixed number of i7 720QM and 820QM CPU's.
Upgrade prices by Dell are not reasonable, so i'd guess there's only a marginal demand for the upgrade from i7 720QM to 820QM CPU, and therefor the number of i7 720QM's in stock is running low. Dell has to re-order CPS's and this costs time. There's your order delay.
The price for this upgrade is $350,- in the US of A or €480,- in Europe (yes; four-eight-zero Euri or about 715 U.S. dollars).
@ my bank $350,- is €235,-, not the €480,- they charge for the CPU upgrade in Europe.
When configuring a Clevo -for example-, the same upgrade sets you back about €160,- or $240,-
I won't even get started about Dell's RAM upgrade prices...
Don't get me wrong, I like Dell's hardware, just hate the upgrade prices. So I'll just have to wait for a good deal to come up. -

how does one call a fourth copy of a post?

Knock, Knock!!! Who's there?!! Studio. Studio, who? Studio 1745!
Alright, first impression is good. Although the fan kicks in every few minutes and I think it's not unintrusive. The parts that frame the keyboard and the display have a small bump, respectively. It looks like a dust particle got overpainted.
Don't know, if this should be a reason to complain about @ Dell.
I did the DPC test for 3ddy. Bad news. The maximum was 11888 µs after about 15-20 minutes runtime. It looked promising in the beginning with most bars around 200 µs. Every 10 seconds or so one bar went up to around 1600 µs.
I could get high values by pressing the media buttons like "Volume Up/Down".
The keyboard is kind of fingerprint sensitive. The police wouldn't need ink
GPU-Z details are as posted by urzrkymn some pages ago. So far. -

aeo - You star!!! Rep on the way
what resolution did you run 3dmark at? thats better than my sxps 16!!!
Which screen did you get and what do you think of it?
Thanks -
aeo, thanks for the info! I have a few questions:
What does the DPC Latency check actually mean?
Does the studio 1745/47 come with a built in subwoofer? How is the sound quality of the speakers?
I'm also curious what screen you got. How does it handle down-scaling the resolution in games? I don't mind a low resolution for gaming, but if it's pretty fuzzy i'd be annoyed.
I'm about to order a 1747 and want to let you guys know you've all been really helpful in that decision. -
Also, post any pictures or videos if you can!
-
@ninja2000: I got the 1600x900 display and I think it looks pretty beautiful.
Resolution in 3DMark06 was 1280x720. The Basic version didn't let me choose a higher one.
@lepp: It has a built-in subwoofer (it's located on the bottom). I have a wooden desk and it slightly vibrates. In my opinion the sound is nice and loud.
Maybe 3ddy can tell you more about DPC latency (according to DPC Latency Checker, it is important for streaming audio and video data without drop-outs).
What's annoying me at the moment are the two cosmetic things, I mentioned above (don't know if Dell can do anything about it, but I don't want to send it in) and the fan kicking in clearly audible every now and then even if idle.
I'm hoping it is something software related running in the background. I am also considering doing a fresh install of Windows 7. -
The first thing I do with any dell is a fresh install. Alternatively open task manager and see if anything is running. You might have a rogue process using the CPU (With my sxps I would often get an IDT audio process crash and use CPU)
Also you may want to install RMClock and undervolt as the lower temps will keep the fan from coming on as often and it has some really good monitoring tools so you can see how much cpu you are using as well as how much power your laptop is using. You can then make adjustments to reduce power and thus have a cooler laptop
Edit - that explains your 3dmark06 score being higher than my sxps 16. I get 6600 @ 1280x1024.
Thanks for the feedback. I am thinking I should have gone for the 1600x900 screen and I would also have mine by now -
Did the bluetooth option disappear from the (Dell U.S.) ordering page, or it was never there in the first place?
-
We have never had the option in the UK. Unfortunately if you want to install Bluetooth yourself it means taking the keyboard/media bar/palm rest off! Usually you can just remove the bottom panel and plug them in
-
Dell is really making me struggle by not having these components ready yet... HP has a dv7t Quad (i7) sitting there in a ready-to-ship configuration... HP also has BT and a TV tuner ready to go. Only thing HP comes up short on is no backlit keyboard and no B+RG display.
-
@aeo Wthat configuration Studio 1745 do you bought?

The speakers are awesome
The screen is awesome (900p) scaling in everything has been spot on
The whole thing is awesome tbh. I'm sure nobody will be disappointed. The bloatware in the OS is pretty annoying though. Wish I'd done a clean install before installing everything.

I am kind of disappointed right now on how things worked out with the fan. Although I really like this notebook, the heating and the fan kicking in after about 10-15 minutes is unacceptable for me.
Shortly after starting, the only thing that's slightlly audible is the main HDD, I guess. It seems to me no fan is running. After a while, doing anything but browsing, the CPU/GPU heats up, fan kicks in, temperature goes down a bit, silence. Then it starts all over again. A constant background noise would somehow be acceptable, but this isn't.
I don't know if it is a problem with my system. Hope you guys have more luck.
Thanks for your tip, ninja2000. But a software solution doesn't seem right for me here. If I bought such a machine, I'd it expect it to handle heating by itself. I suppose I'm sending it back to Dell.
@JoTek: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5447372&postcount=124 (the BT was unavailable later). -
What you are describing with the fan is exactly the same with both the sxps 16 and the studio 1555.
I guess dell design them like that, but when I am surfing and the fan comes on it is really quiet, it only really spins up load if I am gaming.
I know what you mean though, I would rather they were on low all the time than off...on....off.....on whilst idling. Or better still, being able to control the fan yourself -
