Jos, I'm in Canada looking for a similar setup. Can you tell me how you found this deal? Links / coupon codes are appreciated!

Wait, large delay? That does not sound good. My system is scheduled to arrive on or before 18th, was really hoping for it to come in before the holidays.

Has anyone who has got the Studio 1747 (Core i7 version) got any idea whether it is possible to install a bluetooth module? I know the C2D Version will take the Dell wireless 365 module, and the service book is the same for both 1745 and 1747 (so it gives instructions on the installation of the module). However it doesn't seem to be possible to configure the 1747 with bluetooth in any of the regions I've looked at including: UK (my region), US, AU, CA, SG (SG doesn't seem even have the 17 at alll). I'm perfectly happy to install a module myself but I'd rather know before making a purchase whether the laptop will take it (currently deciding between Studio 15, 17 and XPS 16); 15 and 16 both accept BT (and it would seem pretty ridiculous for the i7 version of the 17 to not accept it, but stranger things have happened).

I'm in the US - I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago with i7, 1080 screen. The estimated arrival date (default, free shipping) with Chainlink Black was Dec. 17th, with the Blue screen backing it was like Dec. 21st or something. I opted for black chainlink as I didn't want to push the delivery date up next to Christmas and risk having issues, an incredibly sloppy build, or fedex issues around christmas (sorry sir, we have your package but we're not open again until after the holidays...)

However, I'm pleased to report that Dell emailed me last week to let me know my order had shipped, and I just picked up my laptop from fedex today! :) It actually built and shipped significantly faster than I expected.

So I cannot speak for your specific order, but mine actually shipped faster than expected. :)

I know that bluetooth used to be an option for the Studio 17, but then they removed it. People who had ordered it reported hearing about some sort of supply problem.

Do not know if it was available for the 17" or not.

I've read that it's a real pita to install - evidentally it's not just a slot on the bottom like memory or a hard drive, it's actually located underneath the keyboard. So you have to take the whole laptop apart and get under the keyboard, which is apparently really time consuming and somewhat risky.

I haven't completely decided if I need bluetooth full time, but if I decide I do I was thinking about using the nearly useless usb port of the right side (because being right handed, I need that space for the mouse) and just permanently keeping a usb dongle plugged in there. They make them really small -

Thanks Paul, it's interesting to know that they were offering it previously... the USB option does seem reasonable; tbh I'm not entirely sure how much I need the BT (it's something I use in batches - nonstop for a month then maybe don't bother with it again for a few months), but I do like things to be integrated where possible. Having said that, the small adapter you pointed out doesn't look like it would get in the way like the old USB adapters did.

Yep. It all depends on what you use your computer for. I've been using 1920x1200 and wanted something smaller since I don't have any need for the extra room. So I stayed with the 900p. Plus I always play games at the native resolution and the lower resolution will give me better fps.

Woke up to a message from Fedex saying that my package was shipped today and my new laptop will be here tomorrow! First thing I'll do is copy World of Warcraft over to see if the palmrest, keyboard, or trackpad heat up.

    Here's another good one -

I ordered my machine with 2 drives, 500gb each, for a total of 1TB. I specifically asked Dell support if I could set them up as RAID 1 after I got the computer, and they said I could.

I got the computer - the 2 drives are separate. I had assumed from the page that they would be RAID 0'd together.

Then I contacted Dell Technical support - they tell me my laptop doesn't support raid at all. Pressing ctrl-i at the Dell boot logo just either gets ignored, or brings me to "Windows Boot Manager" which also has a "Tools" section, under which it says "Windows Memory Diagnostics".

    Great.

The only other thing I can think of is there's a separate BIOS update (mine has A01, and there's an A03 update), but it appears that's my only hope.

Also, as someone else mentioned, I haven't researched it as much as I would like, but it appears that the red's are overdone as someone else mentioned - people seem rather suburned in several pictures.

    *sigh*

So you're not too happy with it so far? I'd love to see a more in-depth review from you, along with a few benchmarks, mainly 3dmark06. I'm still sort of considering cancelling my order and going to pick something else up, and a too-red-screen would probably push me over the top. Keep us posted on that, if it can be fixed, etc. How is the screen otherwise?

I currently own a 1737 and can tell you that there is no option for two drives in a RAID config... and I have two drives installed. Also, I'm curious you mentioned your original delivery date of the 17th or 18th what date did you order? I ordered a 1747 on the 23rd of November with the same delivery date, website says "In Production", thanks!

I would have to say it is the same here in Canada, or at least I have experienced so in the past. Not as quick as you have, but at least a week or few days before they estimated. The only bad thing about Canada is that it is shipped with Purolator.

Another thing that may have played in the delay is that I couldn't stand the Black Chainlink and went with Midnight Blue.

I just hope this one comes the way I want it and with no problems; even though Dell is alright when it comes to giving you what you ordered it can take time and a lot of patience.

Call "Sree", Dell sales rep @ (800) 847-4096 ext 4161381, tell him Martin from Winnipeg sent you. Mention the custom Studio 17 package as per earlier post/ description and see if he can offer you the same package. Based on my dealings with him, I can say that he's pretty cooperative and flexible. On another note I did mention Blue Tooth as an option but I may be mistaken. Also, you may want to add the Keyboard back-lit feature (330-4433). You'll notice in my description that I opted out of McAfee protection. However, should you want it, add another $30. Bonne chance.

I don't think anything is wrong with that processor, it is just that the new and better has come out in the i7. I think you can get the same system set up with the new processor for the same price or maybe slightly more.

Just my two cents though, I am no expert.

Edit: Looking over your added options again it would be $1930 including taxes and fees for the same set up you have but the new processor. I didn't add any extended warranty as I didn't notice you had added that either.

Thanks for taking the time to figure that out.I would like to try that processor but I am at my limit with that set up.I am waiting patiently ,I have read a lot of horror stories about Dell not completing orders and at the last minute canceling order.I hope every thing works out ok.

I doubt I'll be able to run 3dmark06 - it looks like I'll have my hands full with other issues at the moment. :-( Noticed last night that on my brand new screen there's also a pixel in the middle of the screen that's stuck red. *sigh*

I think if you try to cancel your order you'll discover what everyone else has - Dell will refuse to let you change anything about your older, including canceling it, once you've made the order. You can wait to get the system, then refuse it or send it back, but then you'll pay a restocking fee.

    Yeah, right?

In a number of other areas, the screen is an upgrade. The viewing angles are better - I'm a picky guy, and I felt like I could sit in front of the 900p screen that I had before this one (the lower version of the Dell Studio) and the colors would shift around just from the change in viewing angle from the motion of moving my head to look at the screen. Opinions may vary regarding how it compares to other laptops in the same price range, but it had kinda been driving me crazy. The 1080p screen is much better. I wouldn't say it's amazing or anything, just more like "solidly adequate" in that regard.

The colors really pop on the 1080p display - though that seems to be part of my problem in getting accurate colors. The 900p screen seemed to have some "pop", this one seems to have more (kind of to my chagrin, though). It's kind of like that *all* the colors pop more, it's just that when the greens or blues pop more it doesn't look bad.

Despite the gloss, it's also seemed easier to see in bad light. Perhaps it's simply that it's brighter.

I ordered on the 27th and got delivery date of 18th. We'll see how that goes. Also, about the screen (to previous poster), were reds being pushed on the RGB screen or regular 1600x900?

    You may find this helpful:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4394190&postcount=631

Last January I did a Spyder 3 calibration on the "old" Studio 17 RGBLED display.

I'll be doing a calibration when I get the new Studio 1747 with 1080p, but I'm trying to hold off on ordering until the BT module and multi touch screen is ready.

Hmm. I tried that - some pics seem better, one other one is particular seems "redder". Though the funny thing about that picture is that when I printed it out a few days ago the colors it printed with were different than the colors I was always seeing on the screen.

    Hmm...still seems pretty red.

Thanks for the info and link, though. :)

And how do you get it installed, then?

As I noted earlier, it is my recollection that installing the module requires disassembling laptop and installing the card underneath the keyboard. Not an endeavor for the inexperienced or light hearted, or one that's cheap to pay someone else to do.

I was talking about the 1080p one with the reds that area little over the top.

The 900p display I owned sometimes oversaturated reds, and sometimes didn't. It was odd. I seriously wondered if it was defective, as the model they had at best buy on display didn't seem to do the same thing with the same pictures.

Hmm yeah, i'm not sure, i'm just really curious about this display. Any pictures of videos of it would be nice to see. The display is the #1 most important thing to me in a laptop.

Other than that, how is overall performance? And how has the heat been?

The area near the touch pad does get warm. I thought it was just because I was copying large files, but now it's sitting on my desk doing nothing for a while and it's just as warm. I don't know if I left the power settings on maximize performance, and it is plugged in. It's kinda in the "wouldn't want to have it on my lap on a really hot summer day", but it's not in the "get it away from me" level of heat. Of course, it's not doing anything. I haven't done any real gaming on it, I don't know if it will get hotter with that or not. It may be getting hotter because I have the lid down.

Performance seems...normal. I'm not a heavy cpu user. To be honest, I'm a little dissapointed in some of the performance, but I have no idea if that's just normal or not. I don't run benchmarks, I was just hoping for instant startup. ;-) And that flipping through pictures in the picture viewer would be instant, instead it still takes a couple of seconds...really not sure why.

There's a bunch of stuff I like about the laptop, but I gotta run at the moment.

Does the Studio come with the hard drive caddy for the 2nd drive or does that need to be purchased separately?

1 - In reality, the top picture is a little red, while the bottom is about twice as much red (but only that's twice as much of "a little"). What it will look like on your monitor may be rather different, depending on how much saturation your monitor gives off.

2 - If you look at the area of the light in the background, the top picture shoes nearly pure white, the bottom has a more pleasing yellow gradient. In reality, it's the opposite - the top (the tv) had the more pleasing yellow, the bottom (the laptop lcd) had more of a stark white look to the wall (yes, even though the face was oversaturated).

    Here it is -

Hmm, that definitely does help illustrate what you're saying, thanks a lot for doing that. It looks bothersome, but i probably live with it, and the screen looks nice and sharp otherwise. I'm hoping some adjustments could correct a bit too, unless you've already done that.

Got my 1747 this afternoon and I've been playing with it for hours. So far the palmrest is just a bit warmer than my hand. I was so worried that it was going to be like the Studio XPS 1640.

But the fans do stay on all the time. Even while web browsing the fan cycles on and off constantly. I don't notice it if there is any background noise but it is annoying when the room is quiet.

I'm loving the 900p screen. It is perfect for me.

The only thing I don't like so far is that I can't tell the touchpad to disable when I plug in a mouse. You have to disable it yourself. The problem is that if you forget to turn it back on and don't have a mouse handy then you are stuck. Am I missing something here?

    Wasn't someone looking for 3DMark06 results? I got a 3DMark Score of 7046.

I've got the i7 720, 4 gb 1066 ram, and the 900p screen. Although the resolution doesn't make a difference since I downloaded the free version and it is limited to 1280 x 720.

Another problem that I found when I remover the back panel is that there are no third antenna for the wireless card and I already bought an intel 5300. Is it alright to not connect the third antenna(the grey one in the middle)?
And do you know where I can buy the second hdd caddy in uk?
    Thanks in advance

It's okay for now, since most of today's wireless routers can only utilize 2 spatial streams for connetions up to 300Mbps which corresponds to the usage of 2 antennas. But for future 3 spatial streams 450Mbps connections, you have to install 3rd antenna.

Thanks, that's not too bad. himarmy, maybe you have the higher resolution screen, which would make 3dmark06 run at a higher resolution by default.

So i woke up today to see that my laptop has been shipped!! The EDD was Jan 1, 2010, and it still says that. I don't have a tracking number or anything yet, it just says "shipped", but i'm expecting to get it much sooner than January! What a nice surprise!

I will post a review when i get mine.

wouldn't just lowering your resolution down to 900p give you the same results?

You've got the faster ram and the better screen. And the screen shouldn't make a difference in the score. Only other difference is that I've got dual hard drives. I would expect your system to score a bit more than mine.

    My Windows Experience Index:

    Processor 6.9
    Ram 7.3
    Graphics 6.6
    Game 6.6
    HDD 5.9

The resolution on my copy is set for 1280x720. That could be why your score was a bit lower.

You guys must have something loading in your startup that is making the difference. I keep my system pretty clean. I stopped the webcam, dell support center, and a bunch of other crap from loading at startup. Although this system has a lot more startup items running than I like. I just haven't done enough research yet to figure out what else I can disable.

I'll run 3DMark again tomorrow since I've installed a few more things.
