great, but maybe you should also note that the "Dell Wireless 1397 Mini Card" wlan card does not work on default in ubuntu. (don't know what about the 1520)
you have to install the proprietary driver (system -> administration -> hardware drivers) and of course you have to connect to your router with cable to get it as wlan doesn't work ;)
the ATI graphic card does also need the proprietary driver to work at its fullest in ubuntu

after a few days i can tell a few things

the 1080p screen is absolutely fantastic. i compared it to my old laptops screen (3 years old) and it was like i was watching my old one through heavy fog...
some red-based colors are very intense and nearly hurt in the eyes (i had to reduced the background light, now it is better) and everything looks so much better

but the laptop gets quite hot for me. the area around the fan keeps really cool the whole time but the area direct under the touchpad gets quite hot after a few hours so the touchpad and a part of the lower half of the keyboard gets quite warm after a while.
my old notebook was quite a bit hotter (my old even crashed a few times after a while because of heat problems) but it is not very cool
did anyone else with a 1747 encounter the same problem?

the touchpad is very large and this can be very annoying. it is so large that i hit it almost every time by accident when typing on the keyboard so the funniest things happen... (like the current window loses focus, minimizes, ...)
also there is no gap between the touchpad keys and the touchpad so i often hit the border of the touchpad while clicking the keys which also results in funny things... (and btw, ubuntu does not support the multi touch pad)

btw, the internal microphone and webcam also works in ubuntu without any problems ^^

Does anyone out there know if us poor sods in the UK are going to get the Core i7 version of the Studio 17?

Just I'm in the market for a new laptop and was looking at the Studio 17, but the current delivery times on these things is next January! Apparently Dell have stock issues with all the 17.3" screens, and the webcams that fit into them.
I was going to upgrade the UK spec machince from the 2.13Ghz T7450 Processor up to the T9600 2.8Ghz one, but if there is an i7 around the corner I may hold fire..........

Or I'll wait until the new Acer Aspire 8940 hits these shores!

I too noticed the heat. I have Core Temp running and my cores hover 54C-62C on normal use. Anyone know if this is normal? My Macbook Pro hovers 43C on normal use.

Well, looking to the Dell service manual, you can see the following on the lower half.
From left too right (on the image): HDD / WWAN module / Bluetooth / RAM slots / WLAN or WiMax module. Remember this is the bottom view of your laptop. When looking at your laptop it will be the other order (Wlan or Wimax / Ram /...).

You could reduce the heat from the wlan (or wimax) and/or wwan cards by putting them in power-saving mode. This way they will go in standby when you're not using them on an active way (browsing, downloading,...). Don't worry getting out of standby happens in a snap, you won't notice the delays.
Remember this will only reduce your heat by some degrees, at max.

I don't know for sure, but I think the same should be possible with bleutooth cards...?

As for HDD's... Maybe SSD's produce less heat? I don't know.

No its the Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth (2.0) mini-card. It is more a rectangular than a square ;) . See the image in attachment.

I don't think it should cause problems with the Intel 5300 wifi card, but can't confirm it though.

Eeeeeeeerg. I wonder if the reds are now going to be off-color. :-(

Would it help with the touchpad to turn off touch-to-click?

Actually, you can up the sensitivity of the touchpad so that a palm "brush" would not do anything/

According to the Dell site the part number should be 555-11600 (Europe) and 430-3313 (US). Seems Dell is not consistent for their part numbers.

Here's the page from the US site anyway: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Networking_Enterprise_Class/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=430-3313&mfgpid=204718&chassisid=8845

Further proof it's the 365 bluetooth card you need are is the 'technical specs' tab on the studio 17 page. It shows:
Bluetooth Options: Dell Wireless 365 Bluetooth Internal (2.1) mini-card
Beware on the US site they (apparantly) only show specs of the old studio 17. Don't ask why...

Just returned my dv7t (well it's going out tomorrow i'm using it right now) for the studio 17, 720q i7, 4gb 1333 ddr3 ram,and the 1080p screen. Can't wait to get it.

Whats up with the price of these? With a 3 year warranty i paid $1750. Seems like an awful lot.

Did you use Bing? Also, seems a lot, I got similar specs plus upgraded proc for about $1800, not counting tax/shipping. Plus I get about $350 back on Bing.

You have to make sure to get it from "performance laptops page" and not from vanilla Studio 17 one.

I am confused on why they don't offer it during the purchase, that's just strange. Anyway, got 365 module on Ebay for 1/2 the price, but it has different part number.... We'll see if it works I guess.

Speaking of parts and hardware, anyone try to overclock GPU/CPU yet?

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=433749

This thread in XPS forum goes over GPU overclocking, but I can't find anything on trying to overclock the CPU. I figure GPU will be the main bottle neck, granted, but still, would be an interesting exercise. Also, have anyone tried taking the thing apart and putting together better thermal paste, maybe mod the heatsink, etc..?

I also got a 130W adapter from ebay just in case I need it. I figure power requirements are similar to XPS1645 and 90W maybe limiting things, especially overclocking and gaming.

My price was after tax and i got free shipping. So I guess i'm not doing too bad. Did you get the upgraded screen too?

I did use Bing, although i haven't heard from them yet. I really hope that goes through, I'd hate to have to send these gems back..... oh yea, forgot to mention i bought one for my girlfriend too, in pink, and without the upgraded screen. :)

Hmm, this heat has me concerned. One of the reasons i was going with this over the XPS 16 or other notebooks were that i figured it would keep cooler. Are these temps cause for concern? Any other thoughts?

Yeap, got the upgraded screen. Your price sounds about the same then. It's not too bad with Bing, as without it I wouldn't have ordered. It better make it through, otherwise I am returning this puppy back to Dell. Did you get the confirmation email?

Crap. This is not good news. My husband's 1735 doesn't have any issues with heat at all so I hoped they would be able to update it without causing any problems. If the palmrest heats up mine is going back.

And just when I was happy to hear that mine hit the boxing stage today.

Hey guys I think I am going to purchase the Studio 17 tomorrow (the i7 model), I have only added a few things, such as:

    - 500 GB 7200RPM
    - Back Lit Keyboard
    - Dell Wireless 1520 802.11n Half Mini-card
    - 3 Year Ltd Warranty w/3 Year Return To Depot Service,Lojack+CompleteCare. (it would cost more without this because of a company discount.)

I am getting all that for 1600 CDN total, do you guys think that is a good deal? I haven't really upgraded much.

Just to add to this thread, my DV7T with core i7 got REAL hot under the upper left corner (processor vents). we're talking almost 80deg C while watching a vid / gaming. I think these Core i7s just run hotter. Mine wasn't the only one, they all seemed to do it. Nature of the beast?

Can you post your impressions once you have spent some time using it? There has been a lot of info on the 1747 but not so much on the 1745.

Probably going to order tonight or tomorrow, should I get a i7-720QM or T9600? I mostly play WoW and other rpgs. One of my concerns is heat, so is the T series much cooler or can the cooling system handle either? Is there a usb bluetooth module I can buy for it because the I7 doesn't offer that. Thanks for any advice from current owners.

Look at couple previous pages for internal blootooth module link, it's Dell 365 model. For the CPU, I got i7, personally. Yes, T9600 will run cooler, but heck, I couldn't bypass the quadcore. Dual-Core is so 2007 :).

Hey guys I placed my order over the phone the other day since I had no internet access and wanted to check prices today but not everything can be selected when I click on Studio 17. I am paying in Canadian dollars and want to know if this is a good price or could I have done better waiting to do this online with special offers? Thanks in advance! Sales rep also said a carrying case would be included but I don't see it. Hope I'm not paying too much.

I also live in Alberta and got a similar system, with these differences:

    + 1080p RGBLED screen
    + core i7 720qm processor
    + 1gb Radeon 4650 GPU
+ 1tb external drive (was a promotion at the time)

    - 2gb ram (i got 4gb)
    - blu-ray drive
    - carrying case

    for $1521.45 grand total.

So, i think you are overpaying, but i'm not an expert. I know the extra 2gb of ram is ridiculously overpriced, is that an important feature for you?

edit: yeah, i think you save $300 by going down to 4gb of ram, according to the config. i have specced out on dell.ca right now.

I am not sure if there is a deal, I just bought it with my company EPP.

As for the screen it is too late I already ordered it. Do you really think it would make much of a difference? I did not think it was worth the extra $150. If I want to see 1080P I can just attach it to my television. Perhaps there is another reason to upgrade?

Depends what you do with it. I do some dev work, sysadmin stuff, will run VMs, etc... in addition to normal day to day web browsing, gaming, whatever, so for me the more resolution laptop has, the better (really wish 1900x1200 was available). If you just going to be doing some web browsing, tv streaming, gaming, etc... then default resolution is probably ok.

I am a software developer so I love as much as i can get. The higher the resolution, the more desktop room you have. You can always bump the fonts if they get too small.

True, I never thought about resolution size.

I am not doing anything serious, basically just web browsing, maybe a movie or streaming something online from time to time. It will basically be used for work, which is all text and a few non-demanding programs.

Thanks for the advice though guys, I can still change my mind. I ordered it yesterday but the rep told me there is a large delay, I should get mine in Jan. 11, 2010.
