Don't be intimidated by so called "B+RG." It's all hype. B+RG is an AUO FHD panel with 90% color gamut.

Has anyone who bought Dell Studio 1749 in the UK, tried to add a second hard disk to it? Dell insists that this system does not support 2x500 GB hard drives, that 500 GB is the maximum.
However, I can see that in other than UK countries Dell sells it with 2x500 GB HD, so why would they limit it to only 500 GB in the UK, so that their customers couldn't make an upgrade to 2x500 GB?

May be they are out of second HD caddy?
In any case, yes, you can use 2 x 500gb. No prob. You can add your own HD by buying a 500gb HD and a caddy kit from Newmode. :)

Nope, they say that second 500GB hard drive is not possible as your system supports only a maximum of 500GB hard drive.

Why indeed? My Dad (he's in the UK, I'm in Canada) quite liked the 1747/9 but DELL only offered it in the UK with wireless g/b card - no new wireless n. But I (and USA...etc) could get it with wireless n card. Why? DELL UK need to get shot of a bunch of old wireless cards I guess. Stupid and short-sighted policy as my Dad went and bought a Sony!

I've given up trying to figure the logic of why config's differ the way they do per region/country. DELL seems better than most for Canadians at least - HP and Sony really shaft us on options as a rule.

That looks just like the bay in my 1747 - there's the connector on the right. So you should be able to add a 2nd hard drive no probs (with a caddy+interposer)

    Documentation

The service manual main page says for 1745/1747/1749 so they should be the same in this regard. I don't know if there's someway they can disable support for a 2nd hard drive (?). But why would they. Sure makes no sense.

I think he meant that the system can only support UP TO 500gb in total drive size which is completely false. Any studio 174X can support 2 drives internally and regardless of drive capacity.

Perhaps they disabled support for more than 500GB HD in BIOS, but why would they do that for the UK only?

I highly doubt that. Even if they did, you could flash to a different BIOS. I think your rep was extremely misinformed and you should ignore what he said.

I added a second drive 750gb to my 1749 two days after I got it. So I have a 500 and 750 in mine. Works great.

I thought about getting the 1TB drive but it was twice the price of the 750. I think it will fit fine. I'm going to get the 1TB external and use it for back ups.

are you guys talking about the samsung spinpoint 1tb 2.5'? If you are it's a 12.5mm drive, they fit in some laptops but don't work in most. I wouldn't count on it as an internal drive.

Needs to be <=9.5mm (depth) to fit the 1747/9. I did some research into this before fitting a 2nd HDD (Hitachi Travelstar 7K500 500GB 7200RPM) in my 1747.

Nice spec! How do you like the screen? FYI seems like the latest BIOS A11 (for 1747) may fix the run-away fan issue.

The screen is really nice. I haven't calibrated it yet but the contrast is nice, viewing angles are good (no big brightness or color shifts when changing my viewing angle slightly) and the color rendition looks pretty accurate also.

The next time I boot up I'll have to see what the BIOS is. Thanks for the heads up.

Toad, Did you get a 1747 by any chance? Where are you located? I tried to configure a 1749 through dell and there was no option for the 740qm or 2nd HDD. Thx.

Anodize, it is a 1749 and I'm located in the USA.

They may not offer that particular configuration right now. I ordered mine on 7-23-10 so you would think that it would still be available.

Also, I haven't directly compared my new laptops display to my old one. My old laptop is an HP Pavillion dv9000 with an AU Optronics display (AUO 4087).

I have to say that it was and still is one of the better displays I've seen on a laptop.

    Hi,

I haven't read through all the posts but what's your config?
I'm planning to buy a studio 17 and I can't decide which one to buy:
    i5 (2 cores) - with ati5650 or
    i7 (4 cores) - with ati560v

I mostly want to run adobe creative suite (photoshop and premiere pro).
THough I know that adobe support nvidia cuda only in premiere pro, could you please conform this after installing creative suite cs5?

I really don't know which config would perform better with premiere pro...

560v is basically a renamed 4650. 5650 is a little faster than 4650 though not far, but it definitely runs cooler since it consumes less power. I would suggest you get the i7 with 560v since I believe you will benefit more with quad core over dual.

Just check back 1 page for my config.

As far as the graphics card issue goes, anything will work but if you want to see premiere pro really shine you're going to have to get a high end Nvidia Quadro card or the less expensive Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 (for desktops).

I don't have any new HD video files to edit with premiere pro right now. Sorry.

Ohh.. so maybe that's why the 5650 cannot be choosen for the i7, because it would consume more power thus more heat, and they cannot divert so much heat...

Is it wise to choose a somewhat "old" (560v - DirectX 10.1, Shader 4.1, 320 pipes) card over a somewhat newer (5650 - DirectX 11, Shader 5.0, 400 pipes) card for 3 or 4 years now?

    Ok, found it.
If it's not too tiring or something, you can download some sample HD files from here: Canon EOS 550D / Rebel T2i Review: 20. Movie Mode: Digital Photography Review
and maybe you could just blend those videos together, or something just to see if the preview of the video runs smootly or it has to prerender first?

OOpps sorry. I misunderstood this in your previous post. So if the 5650 consumes less power then the 560v then I really dont understand why it cannot be choosen for the i7...

The 5650 with the i7 620M is a perfect hit.
It's a fast combination and, except for the fan, no issues here.

Are there still issues with the fan on the 1749 ?

I need a new laptop soon, but it's difficult to find a 17"+ with full HD screen and some gaming perfomance.. The 1749 would be perfect except the fan issue..

I saw videos of studio 17 where one taps on the multimedia keys, it lits up, than after a sec it goes off. Can someone tell me, if I turn the keyboard backlit on will the multimedia keys also backlit?
Also read on some sites that there are/were problems with these capacitive multimedia keys stucking in, etc. Have these issues been already solved?

Also the backlit has some kind of timeout? Is it adjustable?

    thx.

The display is the AUO149D as expected. I calibrated my monitor/display so it is better than it was. It cut down on the blue and warmed it up a bit. I think I can do photo editing on this thing now.
