This is a screen shot from earlier today? I ordered a 1749 but its listed as a 1747...is this common?

    I think 1747 = i7 /w 560v/4650 and 1749 = i5 /w 5650 or integrated. Everything else is identical.

I've only had mine a few days but the multimedia keys stay lit (although there may be an option to turn them off).

You turn the backlit keyboard on, but after a few minutes of inactivity it shuts down until you touch the keys again.

I've read somewher since than, that you can adjust the time it is being on, and it can be set to forever.

I'm curious about the multimedia keys because I also read that at some users it stucked/stopped working, they had to pull out battery or something to make those work again.

The keyboard back lighting can be agjusted. On my 1749 there is a button on the top that looks like a set of gears. press that and then click on the keyboard backlighting. There you can agjust the brightness and the time out amount from 30 seconds to 15 minutes to never.

    Greets all,

I've a couple of questions regarding my new 1749...

Since I got it from the outlet store, I didn't have some options that I now want, mainly HSDPA and a TV Tuner...

Firstly, I cant seen the antenna for the HSDPA socket... The space is obviously there but I'm sure there should be a wire near the socket for the mini-card... Anyone confirm this?

Secondly, anyone know where I can find a half-height mini pcie tv tuner so I dont have to use a dongle? Just cant find these things anywhere!

I just bought a Dell 17 Studio last weekend and I kept the Intel Core i3 that it comes with. Should I call and upgrade to the i5? Is it that much better? About what is the cost difference?

    Thanks, Troy

I am in process of customizing my 1749 and I am almost there. I added an aftermarket custom lcd cover and swapped the stock B173HW01 V.4 screen to a B173HW01 V.0. The difference is huge!

If I wanted to change the screen from the cheaper 1600x900 screen to the 1920x1080 screen, is it a matter of just changing the physical screen ?

I'm trying to get Dell to quote me on how much it would be to buy a X919N from them and they're taking their sweet time getting back to me (about a month so far). So I've looked at a few aftermarket equivalents, such as Dell X919N Laptop Screen.

I've had a look at the instructions here: Documentation

And it looks a bit tedious, but not overly taxing, but it doesn't mention anything if you change from a 1600x900 to the 1920x1080 whether it will just work.. anyone know ?

It's as easy as just swapping. I am done with my little project and everything is running beautifully. :D
How did you find out about the part number of that screen? I did a quick search, but nothing specific about the screen spec. It seem to be an AUO B173HW01, but god knows which version. My 1749 /w B+RG display came with a v.4(90% color gamut) which was then replaced with a v.0(72% standard). The difference is huge as the colors look much more natural. :)

Heya mate, the X919N was the part number given to me by Dell Tech Support. I wouldn't be able to tell what version it is however. I suppose I can ask if they ever get back to me. The 3rd party supplier just says "It will be the exact same specifications & resolution". So I'd assume it's version 4 if that's what you have. Unfortuantely, I'm a little stuck for choice in screen providers here in Aus. I'm just hoping the X919N equivalent is considerably better than the 1600x900 pos I have now ! :)

I asked a seller on ebay if it's v.0 or v.4 and he answered v.4. Not sure if you will like the colors as they are heavily saturated compared your current screen. Try to find the v.0 if possible. It is the best 17.3'' 1080p screen I've ever had to this date. :)

Just received my dell studio 1749 and yes the fans can be quite annoying. It isn't loudness but how the fans will keep going off and than back on every now and than. It is definitely noticeable and i'm really not sure how dell could give the go ahead to release them as they had to know of this issue. Will dell come up with a fix or should I return this laptop... any thoughts ?

Hi all, new here, and so was my Dell Studio 1749. Has the better i5 proc, ATI 5xxx video card, 8gb RAM... and after a week it's lucky to stay on for more than two minutes before powering itself off. I'm thinking "heat related" as I hear no fans and the time shortens the hotter it gets. Even using F12 and getting into the diagnostics, it may get to the second or third (sometimes farther if cold) before it just flat out powers off.

Called Dell in India (snicker) and they're going to replace the unit with a new laptop, but due to the various upgrades it's likely to take two weeks.

Am I supposed to hear the fans in this unit? I hear absolutely nothing at all, ever. Quietest laptop I've ever heard (maybe that was the problem).

Was also thinking of a laptop cooling pad because this thing was getting very, very hot, focusing underneath the touch-pad mostly.

My Laptop came with a drive partition Q: Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010 (Protected). I installed MS Office 2010 Starter, do I still need that drive or can I remove it?

I have a Studio 17 with the i7-740QM, whether that makes it a 1747 or 1749 depends on which website you are looking at I guess, but even though I have not stressed it at all, it is extrordinarily quiet and seems quite cool so far. It appears to be BIOS version A10.

    Update
The Q drive is a function of MS Office Click-to-Run deployment and cannot be deleted (if you want MS Office). I thought it was a something specific to Dell to deploy this free Office 2010 Starter they are installing on their systems now.

What aftermarket custom lcd cover did you fit?

I fitted this anti-glare screen to my multi touch 1600x900 display: FoliX FX-ANTIREFLEX antireflective screen protector for: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

The glare is gone, but there is like a 'mottled' effect now. It's good for now I suppose. Wish I could buy a matte 1080p screen instead.

Btw in local PC superstore last week and saw a Sony F (X) Series laptop with premium matte display...wow...the 16.4 display was fantastic.

Hi all. i'm a little concerned here as twice today when i booted up my laptop i was greeted with a full screen flashing solid colours eg Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, White with about 1 second delay between each colour displayed,

this lasted around 10 seconds or so before the laptop shut itself down :( ,
i panicked for a few seconds thinking ohh f7ck the laptop is goosed, i then powered it up again and it booted up normally without any problems and had about an hours session of just browsing, listening to music etc, no gaming or anything and the laptop was fine no problems,

booted the laptop up again there about 2 hours ago and the same screen with flashing solid colours greeted me and shut down itself afterwards,

it booted up there now normally for me so i must ask what is this and is it a serious fault or something?

I must mention that the unit is a Dell Certified Refurb with 3yrs NBD Warranty.

    Thanks

Some kind of screen diagnosis ? I don't think it's that big of problem since it does not affect your windows tasks in anyway. Do some tests on Windows to further make sure your system is running okay.

    Hi,

New to the forum. Ordered my Studio 1749 on Saturday and it arrived today. Very happy with the speed after reading many horror stories on the internet about people waiting for months.

Just one question really, I'm looking to perform a clean install of Windows 7 but I'm worried that I will lose the Office 2010 that is already installed on the laptop. Dell have provided me with an activation key for any software recovery. Does this mean that after the clean install, I have to download the trial version of Office 2010 and then use the activation key I've been given. Would this work.

    Thanks.

I am having a serious problem for the first time with my Studio 17. My external ports(usb, esata, pci-express card slot) are extremely slow to respond. I plug in something and I have to wait at least 20-30 seconds before it detects it or some times I have to restart to get recognition. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Much thx.

Hi. I've just got a 1749 and need some urgent help.
The e-SATA port isn't working, which means I can't access my old files. It's recognized in BIOS, but not in Windows 7.

Could someone tell me what chipset/driver is responsible for the eSATA port? I think knowing this will allow me to pin down the problem.

If you have working e-SATA, could you post:
    - Any devices/drivers in Device Manager that seem relevant.
    - What the "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" app reports.

That would be a really great help! My work is stalled and I'd be extremely grateful for any help in sorting this out.

    ---

Here are some of my technical details:

Mode set to ACHI in BIOS. 2 internal drives detected in BIOS and working fine in Windows.
eSATA drive detected in BIOS, not in Windows.
"Intel Rapid Storage Technology" app says "empty port".
Windows Administrative Tools -> Disk managment doesn't detect drive.
Device Manager -> Scan for new hardware comes up with nothing.
Device Manager has no items with an (!) sign.
Device Manager -> IDE/ATAPI controllers has: "Intel(R) 5 Series 4 Port SATA AHCI Controller".

"Intel Rapid Storage Technology" app says:
    - Internal disk 477GB (fine!)
    - Internal system disk 76Gb (fine!)
    - Internal ATAPI device (optical drive: fine!)
    - Internal empty port 5 (eSATA or something else?)

I still have my pci express non responding after it's unplugged while on windows.
I have to restart to get my pci express card recognized. So much for AHCI. I wonder if this is normal or do I have a faulty expresscard slot(mobo)?

    question for all:
how is the battery life on the 1749? Specifically I'd be getting the i5-520 with 8 gigs RAM and 1080p screen and dedicated ATI graphics card.
and question 2: is the fan noise issue still present and annoying?
    thanks

Yes. The V.0. Make sure you confirm the resolution(1920 x 1080) and compatible with Dell studio 174X(so they can supply you with the right cable) before you order it.

    All,

Got a 1749 on order (i5-540, 1080 screen, OPI "In your back pocket" cover, etc) and have been reading through some of this thread. I see there's concerns over throttling (which I take to be the CPU refusing to boost up to maximum clock properly.) Also, there's mention of a BIOS update possibly curing this. Can anyone confirm if it's been fixed or if it's still an issue with these machines?

Mooks, are you still looking for a screen? I decided to let go of my spare B+RG screen since moving to the m17x. LMK if you are interested. :)

    AU Optronics B173HW01 V.0 HW0A

Which is the 1920x1080 screen v0 I believe. It was AUD$199 plus postage.

Great! We have the same panel. :) It was very easy for me to replace the screen on my 1747. Took only a few hours(only cos I'm such a neat freak). My next attempt took me 20min or less. Do tell how it turns out for you.
