You win the prize Johnny! This is the first user review of the 17" I've found. What country are you in? I'm in Canada and my 17" (top model - same as you) shows that it shipped Oct 23. Seriously, I can't stand the wait!!!

Question: Did it come with an ethernet port or not? I've seen mixed comments about this with the 14 and 15". The consensus seems to be that it DOES NOT come with an RJ45 port in spite of the online specs saying that it does. New Inspiron 17 7000 Series 17

By the way, there are still no reviews posted on Dell's site for this machine. You could be the very first one!!! Go for it!

I am new here, but wanted to reiterate what Johnny said regarding the Dell 7737. I just got one in the mail last week, and it has been quite titillating thus far. Granted, I am not well versed in all things computer, and have been a Mac user for many years prior. However, this new Dell 7737 (the TOTL job with NVIDIA, Core i7, RJ45,touch, full HD, optical drive, etc.) has converted me from my former pervasive Mac-superiority complex snobbery: it is well-built and finished, handsome or pretty (depending on one's outlook), really fun to use, fast, intuitive, has a great display (touch), has excellent sound quality for both music and video, is quiet, runs cool when using multiple programs/apps, and is just an all around excellent laptop that is well worth the price in my mind. There have been no negative issues as of yet, other than my own incompetence and inability to quickly adapt to the new operating system and such. Again, I am not by any means an authority in these matters, so I can only provide a vey basic "review" based on my limited abilities, experience, and understanding. The only thing I'm curious about was why it didn't come with Windows 8.1, as opposed to 8. I pondered updating, but read that I would have to also update a few other deals (e.g., chipset; NVIDIA; etc.). But it is fine with Windows 8 for now, so I'm not sweatin' it. Maybe soon I'll handle that, but for now, I'm just trying to get better acquainted with this sucker, learning it's ways. I know this was not a very technical review, but hopefully it helps somebody. Oh, and it did come with the RJ45 Ethernet port on the side, which was somewhat important to me because I don't like running wireless all the time-call me crazy but I question the effect this may have on one's health in the long run.

The DDR5 seems to be way better than the DDR3, not just a little bit. The 15 inch one with 750m seems beastly but why the December ship date. I'm thinking of not pulling the trigger on one until black fridayish

It would be killer if it wasn't for that damn keyboard. It's so much of a disappointment that I'm turned off from buying it despite the killer value that it is. :(

I read somewhere that the system has quite a bit of keyboard flex.

Can anyone of the current owners comment? Or post a couple of photos showing how much flex there is when applying minimum pressure?

I would appreciate this as I am aiming to purchase one. But keyboard quality is a big big plus foe me.

    Thanks.

This is the video that a fellow NBR'er made showing the keyboard flex (among other things like the backlighting and the touchscreen):

No prob. If that was isolated I could feel good about taking a risk....but I've seen several people comment upon it + it was called out in a Laptop Mag review.

Yes, until they addressed that keyboard flex issue, I don't think I am going to invest in this system.

I am truly researching a desktop replacement laptop. I may re-consider their new Alienware 17 inch system.

Do you have any recommendations in this regards?

Similar here, except that I'm hesitating between the rMBP 13 and Inspiron 7000 14. There's a ~200$ difference when I consider that I'll have to purchase a 256GB mSATA SSD for the Inspiron 7000 14.

I hear ya there! I configured my ideal ThinkPad T440P and it was more than the rMBP 13 and didn't have a SSD, which is something that I've determined is a must have for my next computer. I will say that the T440P had dedicated graphics but that's only because Lenovo's using the HD 4400 otherwise, if it had the HD5000 or Iris graphics I'd have chosen that.

If I was in your shoes, I'd likely splurge for the MBP just for the better graphics but I want to do light gaming.

Yeah I saw that last night, it was a pretty heartening review. It seems pretty thin for a laptop with this much power, which is something I like but can also be a pain on cooling if not handeled well. Still pretty close to pulling the trigger to enjoy my winter break away from grad school with this workhorse..

I'm profoundly disappointed with the keyboard on the 15" 1700. Was really interested in it and was #1/#2 on my list until I actually went and tried it out at Best Buy. Keys were mushy, obvious flex to the keyboard, and the space bar didn't register like 10% of the time. They may have had a dud on their display floor (hardly a rare occurrence) but that really killed all my love for this thing, couldn't even manage to get through the typing test I was using to test before rage quitting from the bad keys and odd input lag. Laptop is fantastic on paper but I heavily recommend trying it before buying or at least making sure you've got a good return policy set up.

I went and tried it at best buy too. The flex wasn't really an issue with me, when typing I didn't notice it. Yeah if I put my hand down and pushed I could see flex. The biggest problem with the keyboard is the keys are darn small, but I feel like that's something that's not impossible to get used to

Sounds like I gotta get to a Best Buy and look in person on a day off. I really would rather buy this (yay pragmatic side!) for the value aspect.

I just got mine the other day and can say I don't notice any flex when typing, and there seems to be hardly any when I press down with my whole hand (with force). Best to go try it yourself though.

My impression was that if you're looking for flex and try to flex it, yeah it will flex. But it wasn't noticeable while typing. The biggest issue with the keys was how small they were, and they're pretty shallow.

Can any owners please comment on keyboard quality, and most importantly keyboard flex of Inspiron 7737 (17" model in particular)? I wonder if it is any better than the 15" version.

    I would greatly appreciate that.

After selling my L702x (due to the weight) I was looking for a laptop with aFHD touch screen, backlit keyboard and which is lighter.

I kept searching for almost 2 weeks and bidding on Laptops on ebay out of sheer desperation and almost ended up buying a few (I almost got scammed on ebay but thanks to Paypal I got saved). I finally decided to go my local Curry's store to look at all the laptops before buying them on the internet. There were loads of laptops on display at Curry's and not one of the laptops with the exception of the HP Spectre XT Ultrabook were appealing in terms of looks.

I started playing around with some of the high end laptops and none of them offered what I was looking for. The HP Spectre XT Ultrabook came close but it hung when I tried to open the browser and I couldn't even reboot it. I decided not to buy the 13/14" laptops as the display was too small for me.

I finally decided to look at the Dell offerings and after some careful consideration I placed the order for a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series for the top i7 model, which I received on 30/10/2013.

I have been playing with the laptop for almost a week now and I have listed my findings below.

    Pros
    • The Laptop build quality is amazing while it's not as light as some of the Ultra-books it still gives you the solid feel.
    • Display is bright enough and I have lowered the settings down to 1/3 of full brightness.
    • The touch-screen is responsive and fast enough.
    • The keys are placed nicely with the exception of the "Enter" key, which I found it to be a bit small. I sometimes end up tapping the "#" key.
    • Keyboard backlit works as expected and there is no flex while typing normally and you don't notice it. But you can see the flex when you press the keys too hard.
    • The laptop is fast and responsive to whatever applications I have used till now (I don't do games).
    • Replacing the HDD is a breeze.
    • It seems the Windows 8 key is embedded in the bios as my Windows 8 Pro got activated without me entering the key (I couldn't restore the image due to the difference partition size of the 2 hdds).
    • The laptop feels slow with the default 1TB HDD since I am used to SSD's in all my computers so I replaced it with a SATA2 Intel 520 300GB HDD and the laptop now breezes through.
    • Battery life is amazing the best I have seen in all the laptop's I have owned till date.

    Cons
    • The screen has some very light yellow tint and this may be because of the touch-screen glass on top of the main display. But it's not a major problem though.
    • Because the keys are silver coloured it's difficult sometimes to see the keys when you are sitting under any bright light and at an angle. The keyboard backlit does help to some extent but the key can be seen clearly when you see them directly from the top of the keyboard (if you know what I mean). My old L720x had black buttons with white alphabets and I didn't have this problem with the keys.
    • The speaker volume is very low and it's worse when you keep the laptop on a non plain surface because your clothes etc do block the speakers. It would have been better if the speakers were side or top firing.
    • The touchpad is the worst and I had to disable the gestures as it was getting very annoying.
    • The 2 touchpad buttons fail to register the clicks most of the time unless you click on the corners (left and right), which is very annoying and I end up using the touchscreen most of the time.

The letters appear too small on the 15" screen when using the 1920 x 1080 resolution but it's not the laptop's fault.

I will keep updating as and when I use the laptop.

    Hope this helps.

I decided to pick up the i7-4500U, 8GB, 1080p Inspiron 7537 configuration at Best Buy as a potential replacement for my L521x XPS 15.

The 7260-N single band card in the Inspiron 7537 performs just as bad as the Killer N1202 in the L521x, and a bit worse than the 7260-AC in the L521x when operating on 2.4GHz N. Using a Belkin N750 router a few rooms away through an HVAC closet and bathroom (lots of metal and plumbing in between) I can pull between 12 and 25 Mbps down on the 7537. The L521x gets 22 to 25 Mbps consistently. My old XPS m1530 with a three antenna Intel 4965AGN pulls 60 Mbps down consistently. I reran the test on speedtest.net three times for each laptop. A network file transfer from a wired source would obviously be a more reliable test, but these results are enough to show the 7537 has similar wifi stuggles to the L521x. I'll have to do some more testing to see if the 7537 under-performs in other low-signal situations. I also tested an HP dv6t-7214nr with a crappy ralink RT3290 wifi card and it pulled ~33 Mbps down on all three tests.

As a side note; the m1530 also has no problem pulling 60 Mbps down on 5 GHz. The L521x with the 7260-AC can barely pull 20 Mbps down on 5 GHz right next to it.

All of the laptops can max out the internet connection at 60 Mbps when right next to the router.

:( I'll likely return the 7537, as it doesn't really fix the wifi problem of the L521x. The 1080p IPS display is FANTASTIC, and makes the L521x panel look pretty bad, but I'm not sure that's enough on it's own to justify buying another laptop with defective wifi.
    ;;

Bro I'm not sure that qualifies for defective wifi. That qualifies for pretty average wifi for a laptop.

Right...a brand new $1000 laptop with a modern Intel wireless N chipset should clearly perform only half as fast (or less) as a draft-N card from 5 years ago under the same conditions.

Look at user reviews for pretty much most laptops that come out every year. There's always someone complaining about wifi. It's because laptop wifi quality in general is very average and also that people have unrealistic expectations. Also not taking into account certain routers work better with certain wifi cards and most people don't bother to test multiple routers and channels.

    Hello,

I read the keyboard of the 15" version was quite poor. What are your feedbacks you people who own it and use it every day? Are you struggling? Is your typing slower than before because of it?
What about the Wifi sensitivity, does it affect significantly your performances (from a bedroom to the living room for instance)?

    Thanks for the help!

I went to my local best buy to try a different configuration of the 15 incher. My biggest complaint is the keys are a little bit small but I think that can be gotten used to. Also shallow and some flex but particularly the flex I didnt notice when I typed only when I tried to flex it purposely.

Hello everyone, first time posting here, i do not own the laptop but also looking to get this laptop as few ppl here. Keep seeing the same question over and over, and if you read the review posted on notebookcheck they clear as sky say that the 15" version does not come with Msata. its a downer but theres nothing we can do.

Actually it does, as can be seen in the service manual and confirmed by 3 Dell representatives. We just don't know if it's actively supported by the system. Judging by the pictures notebookcheck never opened it up far enough to see the slot on the separate USB board. Check back in previous posts to see the discussion on this.

The mSATA scenario is possibly like the situation with the Inspiron 15R Special Edition. It had the option of mSATA if you ordered it with a mSATA hard drive. It shipped with 2 different USB boards, one with mSATA and one without.

Luckily, it was possible to order the mSATA USB board separately and replace it yourself. Unfortunately, they were hard to come by.

Well, I've been following this thread and the owner's thread for the 7537 and I'm really interested in this laptop. As has been discussed previously, we'd really like to have a working MSATA port on this laptop and, perhaps, a different screen. So, I fired up my Dell chat session and requested that the following configuration be forwarded to the marketing department:
    1. 1080p IPS Matte 100% Gamut non-touch screen
    2. Working MSATA port (with 60gig+ SSD if possible)
    3. 7200RPM 1TB HDD
    4. Windows 7 Pro

    Hi Guys,

I received my Inspiron 7537 1080 3 weeks ago. Everything works perfectly except the static noise after connecting headphones. Tried different headphones, latest drivers nothing worked. Dell has sent an engineer to look at the problem. He replaced entire motherboard but the noise is still there. I tried Bluetooth headphones and external sound card but this hissing noise is always there in the background. Dell gave up as well and agreed full refund. I really like this laptop and think its great value for money. I am thinking about getting another one after refund but not sure if this static noise is present in all models or was this only one off.
I know that many people never use headphones with their laptops so they wouldn't know if this problem exists or not.
Would be great to get some feedback from other owners.
    Many Thanks

I feel like I've heard of this problem with other laptops, I wonder if there is a common cause?

    Hi,

I am a prospective purchaser of a Inspiron 7000 17" full HD laptop, with a Core i7-4500U processor and plan on upgrading it with an SSD soon after purchase.

To minimise power consumption and maximise battery life I am interested in ensuring that the laptop supports Microsoft's eDrive specification which is supported by Windows 8.1. This saves energy my utilising the SSD's hardware encryption for BitLocker rather than both the OS and the SSD indepedently encrypting data. This is AnandTech's description of the technology ( AnandTech | Hardware Accelerated BitLocker Encryption: Microsoft Windows 8 eDrive Investigated with Crucial M500 ) and this is Microsoft's description of how the OS utilises the technology ( What's New in BitLocker for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2). It therefore requires a laptop (I think the i7-4500U does?), a compatible BIOS, and an SSD (currently Crucial M500 or Samsung 840) which also supports the standard.

I have contacted DELL UK Technical Sales (India) and asked them the same question, but despite promising to get back to me on Monday, I haven;t heard as I suspect the question is too technical for them.

Does anyone on this forum know whether the Dell Inspiron 7000 series supports the Dell eDrive specification under Windows 8.1?

Hi, new to the forum, and this is my first post, but just wondering from owners of the 7537 what their impression is. I had an xps 12 but returned it due to image retention issues. Looking to go bigger. The one drawback I have heard about this system is the keyboard flex.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Just how bad is the keyboard flex. Nobody carries it around here for me to go and try the thing, so the only real experience I will have will be to order from Dell ...but just trying to get a little colour on the system before doing so.

    Screen ok? Keyboard?

    Thanks,

Screen is awesome, maybe a bit ove-rsaturated but I love it that way. I don't see keyboard flex at all.

I had one for about a week but returned it. Now hear me out on this -- it had incredible performance a beautiful screen, all that. The problem though was the spacebar on the keyboard frequently missed my strokes. Like, a lot, happening every few minutes. That may seem like a small problem but for 1100 dollars I didn't want to deal with any problems like that. I've heard many others have problems with the mushy keyboard. I didn't experience much flex, I don't think you will either. You have to want to flex it for it to flex. But it does have a mushy often unresponsive keyboard, which is sad for a laptop that could run a million applications and battlefield 3 smoothly at the same time :(

Hmmm thanks for the feedback. I however, just looked at the review for the Inspiron 15 7000 at notebookcheck.net and it seems pretty good, and no complaints (major) from the forum, however, in the notebookcheck review (which are my favorite reviewers due to the serious amount of detail they get into) they note the screen is made by LG. This wouldnt be a big deal for most but I was one of the so far dozens of people who purchased the XPS 12 that has an LG screen that after some time begins to exhibit image retention. Mine showed up after just a week after owning it so I was able to return it for a full refund, (LG is at the core of that big Apple fiasco with more than 80,000 complaints due to image retention from LG made screens too) and I swore I would never again by a laptop that has an LG made or installed screen such as the 7537. I did an online chat with a rep at Dell who told me he would not divulge who made the screen other than to say that if a problem of image retention happens, then I can deal with Dell to fix it...hardly soothing words. I know the NEW XPS 15 has a Samsung manufactured screen but obviously the finances are 2 different things between this system and that. Having said all that I think I am gonna wait a little longer (couple more months and follow the forum closely to see that the image retention problem does not occur in this system as well. On paper it looks great, and the feedback here seems like it might be worth taking a risk but I think I will just sit on the sidelines a little longer and hope none of you have that particular problem, because if not, I'll pick it up in the new year. Thanks for the feedback ..its most appreciated. Strange thing is..after looking at many forums here for different systems..seems like everyone has some kinda problems lol. Wonder if it was always like this and just hidden because of no internet to communicate between owners or have things become worse over time in terms of quality.

    Cheers,

I'm not having any issues with my WiFi, but I live in a fairly small apartment.
