Don't suppose any 1720 owners can tell me if there is a recovery partition on there? sounds like a whole lotta hoola hoops to jump through to reinstall windows (which I do every 9 months to a year on all my PCs)

I ordered one of the least favorite colors (Yellow) on 7-27-07 and my est ship is still 8-23-07....Must be more than just lids causing backups considering on the color choices thread there was only about 5 maybe 6 people who ordered yellow lol. Hopefully it will come soon, getting eager to see it dammit!

I ordered an Alpine White 1720 (see sig) on August 2nd and my ESD is 8/15/07. Not too bad, I'm praying it isn't delayed.

Seeing as how I only paid 1324 shipped for mine with a 4 year total coverage warranty and I need it for school more than gaming, I will stick with the Dell. Plus, Toshiba's are notorious for horrible battery life. The 1720 goes for about 3 and half hours on the 9 cell battery playing a dvd. That means I can get through a whole class with power to spare. Add in the 6 months with no interest, it makes it hard to beat

Toshiba does make a great product and the x205 is one sick machine, but I think I made a good choice.

If I wanted a pure gaming laptop/HD laptop, I'd go Alienware

I think they did? Pretty sure they did but Alienware still makes their PCs top-notch with good quality (not to mention they look a lot better than the Dell "gaming" notebooks).

Dell does own Alienware, but they are not incorporated into the "Dell family" though. They are still independent. The only thing Dell did was to help them establish a line of credit through CIT Bank (same bank who manages DPA) so people could finance Alienware computers

I ordered mine on Saturday the 4th of August and it has been shipped already. I chose next day so it should be coming in tommorrow. I paid about $1880 including taxes and shipping ($1660 or so without) for this with over $600 in Dell's student discount program (12% off EPP customers, 7% off complete care, and another $288 of on EPP customers). What do you think about this deal? I'll put up some pics as soon as I get it.

    Dell Inspiron 1720:
    Alpine White Gloss Finish
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz
    2GB DDR2 667MHz
High Resolution 1920x1200 Glossy Widescreen Display
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600 (Will this be good enough to play Madden 08 or do I have to get a gaming console?)
    160G 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
    Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
    8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card
NO WEBCAM OPTION (Personally I dont care for this but it looks nice.)
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
    Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Module
3 Year Everything (Warranty, LoJack, McAfee, Accidental Damage)
    Dell Datasafe 10GB
    Belkin Mobile Power Surge

I'm thinking about buying a wired Xbox 360 controller and Madden 08 but what do you guys think?

Maksa, I think with the jet black you may be safe for the shipping date, or so I've heard... not sure about getting it early, but who knows. My estimated ship date on the site still says 8/6, though the hotline still tells me the order is in production -> build stage. Hasn't budged since I ordered on July 18. My Dell rep has upgraded me to NBD shipping, but that doesn't make it better really.

You are right i am safe with Jet Black and that's my fav too :)

btw on website it says Ship From Factory.

and when i asked on customer care they saying it's under custom it took 2 days extra there. so by 2morrow they will release my notebook from there and will generate invoice for me on Monday. so i hope that i will get my laptop by next weekend. they saying it will come by road no AIR :( and in my quotation it's
Delivery Type : By Air so i have to clarify that thing with them. btw how do u people get? by air or road?

My first post here! Just ordered my 1720 and have a few questions for you guys:

    1. I got the standard 1440x900 glossy screen. Does anyone know if it's a TrueLife? Wasn't clear in the "Help Me Decide" box...
    2. I struggled over getting the glossy or the anti-glare - any opinions one way or the other?
    3. I ordered the Blue case, but it looks like that's taking a long time to fulfill. Any opinions on the white or black cases?
    4. My order is still "In Production", so I think I can make changes at this point without affecting my ship date much. Already decided to change my network card to the Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N...

I'm not gaming on this, and my eyesight is quickly declining, so the 1440x900 screen should do just fine. Also didn't see the need to upgrade to the 256MB Nvidia option, although I will be doing video encoding... Anyways, here's my list ( $1275 w/tax and free shipping):
    Inspiron 1720, Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache $1159.34
Midnight Blue Color with Microsatin Finish $0.00
Premium Deep Navy Blue with Soft Touch LCD back color w/ 2.0M pixel Camera Insp 1720 $.00
    2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm for Inspiron 1720 $0.00
    Glossy, high contrast widescreen 17.0 inch display (1440 x 900) $0.00
    128MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8400 $0.00
    160G 5400RPM SATA hard drive 5400 RPM $0.00
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, English $0.00
Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem, for Inspiron $0.00
    8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive $0.00
Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0 $0.00
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card $0.00
    Integrated 2.0M Pixel Webcam $0.00
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, Inspiron 1720 $0.00
Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Mod $15.15
No Internet Service Provider Requested $0.00
    No Productivity Software requested $0.00
    1 Year Limited Warranty $0.00
Dell Hardware Warranty PlusOnsite Service, Initial Year $0.00

Truelife is glossy.. i have the same screen as u.. pretty good.. but u need to keep light off it otherwise u can't see anything due to the reflections.

I got the blue.. looks black unless some light falls on it

Oh, cool! So the anti-glare is the only non-Truelife screen I guess...? Wonder if I should just switch to the Black case, if it looks black anyways... Could bump up my delivery date and save my $50, which would pay for my wireless card upgrade... The photo of the blue case makes it look more blue than black, but I guess it's just the way they lit it...

    Thanks!

I just ordered it, I'll have the configurations posted sooner. DELL will take the payments tomorrow, and then the count-down starts. :) I'm ordering from India.

Can anyone of you post print-screens? Like of desktop, various applications opened, My Computer, Control Panel etc if it is not too much to ask?

    Thank you. :)

I have gotten Dell before and have had great service ever since, so I am willing to wait for my notebook.

^^That's my configuration. When can I expect it??

Would I be able to play EA Sports FIFA 08 with full shabang?

Also, if anyone has the 1900-something resolution, can he/she/it post pics of this resolution, and the 1440-something, so that I can compare?

    Thank you. :)

DUUUUUUDE, ya shoulda gotten an HP!

I hate to keep coming back and rubbing this in (but my DISenchantment with Dell continues to grow, even as I continue to use this 9-month-old XPS 410, which is quite nice, even though not a SINGLE tech support case I've had with them for Vista-related software issues since upgrading in March has resulted in a resolution, which I ALWAYS had to either figure out on my own or find someone ONLINE who knew the answer)...

At any rate, I ordered a dv9500t 8/3/07 with the EXACT SAME SPECS as your Inspiron 1720 above (except for the screen -- their top screen resolution is 1680 x 1050, which was what I ordered)... It had a scheduled ship date of 8/14, but it ACTUALLY shipped 8/9, just SIX DAYS after placing the order for the customized laptop (actually, it didn't have the EXACT same specs, since HP offered a couple things Dell didn't, like a built-in TV tuner, a Gigabit Wireless N card, and I got it with the fingerprint reader and bluetooth)... And although FedEx is now SAYING its expected delivery date is now Aug. 14, the original expected SHIP date, it left the Indianapolis shipping point (after originally leaving Shanghai, China) 1:59 p.m. YESTERDAY... That's less than 1,000 miles from me, so I'm BETTING I'll have it tomorrow.

I KNOW some of you HATE HP, but My prior desktop to this Dell was an HP, and it still runs FINE (about to set it up with a Wireless N card in my bedroom as a "satellite" to my primary desktop here in the basement), so unless you just HAD TO HAVE that 1920 x 1200 screen, holding out for the Dell, to me, is just being STUBBORN.

And by the way, over on the HP forum, someone just posted that through, I believe it's 8/18, there's a 20% off coupon available online for ALL HP notebooks purchased through the HP Store more than $799... On a $1,500 laptop, that's $300!

Those of you SICK AND TIRED of these 4-6 week waits REALLY oughta go take a look! I see no reason to stick with Dell "just because." I've had REAL ISSUES with HP, so I can understand if you're hesitant. But every time I've had to deal with Dell -- even when I was ordering my PC -- I've had REAL ISSUES with them, as well...

When I was placing the original order, which I attempted to do totally online, I ordered both Firewire (something, I might add, HP STILL INCLUDES STANDARD in all its PCs -- at least all of which I'm aware, but Dell charges for as an ADD-ON), AND a sound card, in addition to my TV tuner (and of course the old-style modem for backup... I had NO IDEA that exceeded the number of PCI slots available, and THAT caused my order to HANG, but the SYSTEM was too freakin' stupid to indicate that when I placed the order, and let me place it like that, and it took FOUR DAYS before someone FINALLY sent me an email -- after REPEATED EMAILS FROM ME -- telling me my order was held up due to an error... Then when I FINALLY talked to someone on the phone, his use of English was SO POOR, it took him repeating himself three times before I FINALLY understood what the problem was... Then I went through about FIVE DIFFERENT phone sales people before I FINALLY GOT ONE who said he was "and XPS specialist" and who got my order RIGHT and got it processed quickly and to me BEFORE Thanksgiving, so I didn't have to sit around looking for it the day after, rather than shopping the sales.

Same kind of incompetence EVERY SINGLE TIME I've had a tech support issue.

I'm NOT saying HP is any better... I just don't think they're any worse... And for what it's worth, their sales department seems to be A LOT BETTER at getting orders processed and shipped.
    Jeff

My 1720 is due to arrive tomorrow! I ordered on 7/25 and the estimated ship date was 8/10. It actually did ship on 8/10 as estimated and I have a FedEx tracking number for proof. :) The salesperson did give me hope that it may be earlier but it wasn't. As soon as I get it, I will let you know what I think. Here is what I ordered...

    1720 Ruby Red, 17" WUXGA, T7500, 2GB, 160 Hard drive, 8600 GT, DVD+/-RW...

I didn't say they hadn't been NICE robi0026... They're always NICE when I need tech support... They just never seem able to fix the problem... keep having to ask me to wait while they "look stuff up," end up having to call me... TV tuner wasn't working right after Vista upgrade; tech took control of the computer and tried a few things, that didn't work, so then he called me and had me unplug the computer, take the card out, put it back in (re-seat it, as he called it), and when it briefly worked again, said my problem was solved.

Yeah, it worked for a day or two, then the same problem came back... eventually, after "case escallation" and SEVERAL emails back and forth with my "case escallation manager," he agreed to send me a replacement tuner (which was a refurb, not a NEW tuner, although they then threatened to BILL ME for a NEW tuner card when I was slow returning the old one), and before he sent me the card he couldn't HELP but REMIND ME that my tuner was only guaranteed to work in the system as originally shipped, with XP Media Center, implying, of course, that if this didn't solve the problem I might as well just quit complaining, so I have, and it's still not solved...

This computer was sold as 100% Vista compatible, Vista runs fine, EXCEPT for the issues with Media Center and the TV Tuner card... fed up with going online with Dell's Tech Support and wasting hours for nothing, so I'll FIGURE IT OUT ON MY OWN.

Yeah, they're nice, and they're quick... and they're pretty much CLUELESS.

stupid girl... i am really upset with customer support. i spoke to "Pooja" she was really rude... mine in custom clearance from 6th Aug. when i call up on 6th they said it may take up to 5 days. after 5 days when i call up on 10th they said it will be done on 11th and today on 13th we will generate invoice for you.

and today when i spoke to this girl she is saying it will take another 2 days or more for custom clearance. i can't say anything. after that they take 2 days to generate invoice. is it really big deal to generate invoice. why the hell they taking 2 days for that. then delivery by road.

On my Order Confirmation clearly mentioned Delivery Type : By Air

and now she is saying that is from Malaysia to India. But here by ROAD. :(

i must say that girl was really rude she was not giving any proper answers. if they have any customer feedback then i must complain.

You must have simpler problems than I do???

All my problems (other than upgrading to Vista, which DID NOT work the way Dell said to do it, and they had NO CLUE on that, either -- had to do it the way recommended in Blogs on ZDNet) have been related to my TV Tuner card and Media Center... If you don't use your computer for watching and recording TV, then those sort of Media Center issues will NEVER be a part of your tech support needs and you'll NEVER run into the kind of "me don't know" tech support I have.

I know they don't MEAN to be incompetent... someone in the "front office" at Dell, HP, Gateway and ALL these big computer companies (really, at the BOARD level), made the decision to outsource things like technical support to places like India... At first, I imagine it worked pretty well... they all got the cream of the crop of available technicians, with LOTS of well-trained, well-educated people from whom to choose... But they've been at it a while, now, and I think this has grown beyond their control. NOW there are THOUSANDS, probably tens of thousands of these people manning tech support lines for these companies in India and elsewhere, and I'm SURE they're to the point that they don't have quite the choice they once did... Just a guess, really, but SOMETHING has to explain why they can't solve my problems -- aside from the fact that Microsoft never REALLY HAS seemed to offer much in the way of support for Media Center, and I can't figure out why -- particularly since they've expanded it and made it a standard part of the OS now.

Still, it doesn't matter. If the COMPUTER MANUFACTURER is responsible for the support, REGARDLESS of what Microsoft is doing, THEY should find the answers!

    hey Maksa.....

sad to know u got tangled with their $hit..... i know mann..... these customer support reps suck a$$...... big time......... half of them don't know what they are saying......... i am fed up of giving them lessons over phone

i received my 1720 on the 5th..... just one day before the estimated delivery date..... and heres my story.. about the 1720......

the promised 7200rpm HDD wasn't there..... instead i got the 5400rpm.......

i just don't know how much pissed i am abt this...... me too got a girl called ramya...... and oh god..... i asked her specifically a million times whether i would get the 7200 one...... and she blindly said yes......
and guess what she even confirmed with the tech support guys out their & even they said yes lol ....... guess all are FOOOLS out their in dell.......
too bad for them..... since i've already lodged a camplaint.....

luckly their weren't any major issues with my laptop..... but i have to say that i am one of those unfortunate guys ...... who have to deal with the high frequency cpu whining noise in my headphone jack......and add to that the noise can be heard outside too...... what a bloody load of crap....... other than that no other probs........ i am happy with my notebook....... and yeah my display is awesome no signs of graininess at all.....

anyways let me know whether u got any issues with the headphone jack or any thing else......

I ordered on 08/06 and it's due to be shipped on the 17th, so we will see. I'm in no rush as my current laptop is still in good working order and the less time I have to play with my new lappy is more time to pick up extra shifts so I can have it paid off in 6 months with no interest.

If this thing doesn't get me off in 30 seconds or less, I will be pleasantly supplied :p

wow that's great you got your laptop before 1 day estimated delivery date :) wish i will also get before time. mine is on 21st Aug. i think if you buy good head phones then you will not face noise in headphone. i saw some posts about that here.

btw i got doubt first time when you told me that you gonna get 7200 RPM HDD. because it was not listed on their site. anyways i hope they will replace it with your old one coz now they got 7200 RPM HDD on their site.

all females staff here in DELL India sucks... they don't have any proper knowledge.

btw you promised us to show pictures of your new DEll 1720. and also write the review :) i am sure it's the best one.

so i am waiting mate.... post lots of pictures here.

We placed our order 7-11-07 with ship date 7-27. On 7-17 we added another battery. We wanted one of each. They posted two 85's. We straightened that out, but delayed ship to 8-6. Dell called 8-3 and asked if OK to ship 8-6. Happily we said sure. Checked status on 8-6 and ship date had been changed to 8-28. Dell called again and asked if we wanted to wait. My wife being a big Dell fan said yes, so they upgraded shipping to overnight. Anxiously waiting.

I called them last week when they changed my ship date for a 3rd time to 8/28 and they then changed it to 9/10 while I was on the phone w/ them. I too ordered it on 7/11. I canceled and reordered in Black instead. It went into boxing stage today. Hopefully it's a good sign.
