OFFICIAL: Inspiron 1720 Owner's Thread

has anyone gone to in production right after ordering?

 

I'm debating picking up a 1720, but have a couple of questions related to the video card. I searched the thread for "7950" but it gave zero results.

Here are the specs on the system I'm debating ordering:

First, would I be able to install the 7950GTX from the XPS1710 at a later date if I choose to (when the prices come down)? Would I also be able to upgrade to the DX10 card that is due to be released with the 1730? I'm concerned about future proofing. I do not want to spend 2 grand on a laptop that won't keep up in a year or that I wouldn't be able to upgrade when the time comes.

Second, the Processor I've selected has an 800Mhz FSB, but the memory available is at 667Mhz. Does this not defeat the purpose of upgrading to the 800Mhz FSB or am I missing something here?

Last, what is the current best combination to get absolute best deal on the system I'm looking at? I have EPP available through my work and would like to know if there are any coupon codes better than the standard $200 off Inspiron Notebooks that I can compound with the EPP discount as I did on my M170 a couple of years ago.

Woo Hoo!! I got it!! It arrived about 11:30. I haven't been able to play with it yet but will as soon as I get home from work. I did go home at lunch and took a good look at it, inspected it, etc. It looks pretty cool. I like the red. Looks like classic car colors. One thing...If they would ship overnight on Thursday, then I would have had it all weekend....if I had it to do over, I would have tried to get a ship day other than Friday. Knowing that it was about 15 minutes form my house and not be able to go get it all weekend was irritating.

For those who didn't see my first post...I order on 7/25 and it shipped ON the estimated ship date of 8/10 as stated when I placed the order.

I ordered online, and yes....just checked and says in production and should be shipped by 8-31-07. Sure hope it doesn't change

 

I believe mine went into production right after the order was placed as well. It went into the 'Build' stage quickly too but statyed there until 8/8 when it went to 'Boxing'...then shipped on 8/10. (Ordered on 7/25)

 

I went into production right after ordering on 8/6. I was in build for about a week, into testing last night, and into boxing this morning.

Yep, in production right away ...

My problem is getting out of production! Will have been in the build stage for a full month in five days.

 

Little anxious to pull the trigger... would the 1720 support the 7950GTX if I were to purchase one separately at a later date?

Also, I can spec out a Vostro 1700 exactly the same for around $200 less. There any reason to go with the I1720 over the V1700?

Only difference I can tell is Vista Basic vs. Premium.

I ordered mine on 08/06 as well, but I'm still in the build stage. Build faster dammit......

 

I ordered mine on 8/1 and it went into the build stage the next day. It should ship out tomorrow. We will see!!!!

 

I am in Tennessee. The only thing different that you listed is the hard drive. I got a single. I will send photos soon....I just finished setting it up...so far, so good....

 

I guess order date has no relavence to how they are spitting these computers out...

Ya...I just want my computer before I leave for college, which I didn't think was too much to ask for almost a month ago when I ordered...

 

Not that it matters but...did you order online or by phone? I built mine online via the Dell EPP site. I then called and ordered it by phone and they pulled up what I had in my cart.

 

Online through EPP...It would seem that ordering by phone makes a difference, I am no longer surprised by Dell during this whole situation...

 

It does seem like that. Maybe they put more of a priority when you phone it in. I built mine online then phoned mine in, hopefully that will make a difference.

I really don't understand how ordering by phone gives you that much priority, my intial ESD was before you even ordered...

 

mine had an estimated ship date of 8/20, but i got it on the third. they still haven't sent the bag. I wonder what the delay is? it's not like they need to manufacture a bag.

 

Actually the one I got, had all the knowledge, was no rude at all, and has helped me a lot.

We ordered through a Dell Kiosk. The last time I talked to the Rep there, he said there was a shortage of glass. Maybe that has been resolved, but it seems no one is getting the Midnight Blue that we ordered on 7-11-07.

 

Ordered my 1720 (specs in sig) on August 2nd and has been in the build stage since. Last nite it finally moved to the testing stage, and this morning it is finally in the boxing stage. The end is near! I can't complain though, I'm right on schedule for my ESD of August 15th.

 

I will get some pics up when I get home this evening. I was trying to get around loading them to a site when I should be able to pull them from my pc....i guess that option is gone...

Until then...Here is a teaser...THE SCREEN IS AWESOME!! I am very pleased so far...

I have been trying to get Dell to let me use the $325 coupons, but I haven't had any luck yet. My biggest concern with this laptop is the grainy screen, backlight bleeding and noise from the headphone jack (I'll be hooking up my speakers). Oh yeah, and running Vista. I don't have much faith in Vista. I have too many devices that aren't compatible.

I may do some light gaming at the most. I bought this for school. I'm a business major and think the number pad is a great feature. Does anyone think I should upgrade the screen, video card or sound card? I can purchase the soundcard from dell for $65, which is less than if you have it build with it

As for putting up pics, the easiest way is through the image host sites and typing"picturelink/[img]" I think that's correct.

I ordered mine knowing full well it would take a long time, but 3 weeks isn't too bad.

 

Ok, Thanks for the info. I called it and here is what the response was.

"Your order has been shipped and is in transit to the carrier. It was shipped on July 17, 1998."

1998!!!!!! I ordered it July 24, 2007. Must have a god-damn time machine over there!

They are really starting to piss me off.

 

Mine did. Ordered the Aug 24th and went into production on the 25th. Been there ever since. Today is August 14.

The phone number doesn't work because you're in a country OTHER than the U.S. - that phone number only works for U.S. orders.

 

See, my deal is ... I've been in the build stage since July 18. I called the order status hotline and talked to the person there, they tell me that the green color is gone and it won't ship until September 18th!!! They said I could change to blue, red, white, or black, which were all in stock .... different from what you're saying.

Called my sales rep (what I should have done originally) and they tell me green can ship August 20th. Was supposed to be the 6th, but OK I can deal with that. Point is, I'm not sure how much *correct* information exchange goes on between these separate Dell entities ....

BTW ... pics would be nice =)

Can't seem to get an answer. Is it possible at install a 7950GTX into the 1720 or the Vostro 1700?

 

I'm in India as well. In Gurgaon. The sales rep was in Banglore, and I have to say, her service, and response time and knowledge is impeccable. Of course they've done MBAs, and not B.E in CSE like me or or have extensive knowledge of this stuff like other people here, so cut them some slack.

Now, can ANYONE of those who've got their machines, post print-screens of their screens, please?
