I Directly Predicted this considering the launch of the Studio XPS 16, My 1737 would have been there as well but I decided to keep it since it was my First Laptop ever.

And the Performance gain would not justify higher costs, Mainly the DDR3 RAM

But since my 1737 is 99% my desktop replacement and is never on battery DDR3 really does not matter.

As my First Laptop ever the 1737 is amazing, Not a gaming powerhouse

    But Ok for RTS games.

And the 17 RGB LED screen is Amazing color is accurate and no banding.

It auto Detects my 22 LCD via HDMI and VGA.

and the speed of the T9400 Core 2 Duo Intel CPU 6MB cache and 1066 FSB, and 4 GIGs of DDR2 800 really makes the 1737 fast.

I just purchased a refurbished red 1735 for my mom. It should be more than enough for her!

Yes Im very happy wtih my 1737 with the RGB LED screen. Never would have kept it without the RGB LED.
The people that are having problems calibrating it dont have the ATI 3460. The ATI control panel will fine tune your calibration since you can turn down the saturation.

I just went through the same thing on my home system with the Dell 3007 wide color gamut monitor. I couldnt get it calibrated the way I wanted because there was too much color saturation. I changed over to an ATI video card and the difference was night and day. I was able to turn down the saturation and now I love it. On the Hardforum people were complaining about the oversaturation on this monitor same as they are with the 1737 RGB LED. The ATI control panel really helps.

Just ordered a 1737 refurbished from the outlet store.

Can't help but wonder if there is a quality difference between that and a non-refurbed unit.

Dell was having one of their 20% off sale on studio's and........well my old 86oo is getting long in the tooth so to speak so this should be a good upgrade and the larger screen will be easier on these old eyes.

I am hoping to dual boot it w/xp and vista.

I just received my re-furb 1737 from the Dell Outlet. Amazing deal.

    Purple cover
    Vista 64
    4GB Ram
    (2) 320 HDD's
    ATI 3650
    P4 - 2.53
    WXGA+ LCD
    Blue Tooth/Backlit Keyboard
    $871

I am very impressed with this, as I just sent back a Macbook to Apple that I paid twice as much for... (different thread I'm sure). But this is outstanding.

One question for the owners out there. I have Quickset running, but I don't have on-screen volume controls, no up/down/mute indications. Is that something I don't get with Vista 64? I can't seem to figure that out. Just curious.

There's no difference. If it's listed as a "scratch and dent" it might have a minor blemish, but for the most part they are good as new. I have bought stuff from the Dell outlet for years and years and never had a problem. I suspect they have a lot of Studios now because somebody didn't like the color they got at Christmas, the purple wasn't purple enough, etc. :D

    My first post.
I have a new 1737 and I like it pretty well.
It replaces a 1720 that went south.
I have read many of the posts here and there is wealth of information so I look forward to making the computer even better through learning.
Overall, I am enjoying the Studio with one exception. The cooling fan runs all the time and is louder than anyone I have had before. Sometimes it can be downright obnoxious.

No problems other than that, oh and its blue.

What was wrong with the Mobo, ? I would have returned it for a refund or get some cash credit from DELL

Imagine buying a new car and 3 days later you need a whole new engine?

rubberfingers did you have the at home warranty for the engineer to come out or was it just because the fault happened so soon after you got it?

I asked for a new replacement but I brought the 1737 from Dell Outlet so they would not to that. They did offer me a refund but having looked at an alternative machine for the same price I paid for this one - I could not find anything similar. I got the 1737 for £330 inc VAT.

Hopefully the new mobo will fix things, I took it apart myself first and did not see anything obvious, reseated the RAM, CPU, reset the CMOS etc etc. Hopefully I have just been very unlucky with this mobo.

How has everyone else found the reliability of the 1737 to be?

Well, just as a heads up on the reliability of the studio, I would just like to comment on my own experience, I recieved mine just before christmas, when I turned it on, I can only describe it as visual distortion on the screen, I phoned dell (and chatted to them online) could not solve the issue, I then phoned dell back and they arranged for a engineer to come out and fix the problem (which turned out to be a new motherboard!) only took about a week to sort out (probably would have been quicker but was over holiday period) so I was impressed with dell sorting it out so fast (but very annoyed there was an issue in the first place! Sucks!

Seems there are a lot of motherboard replacements going on with with 1737 - maybe a bad manufacturing batch?

Has your been OK since having a new mobo?

Still waiting for the enginner to come here and replace mine

Since the engineer came out and swopped the motherboard, everything has been fine, cannot fault the laptop now - understand your fears tho, last thing you want is an expensive doorstop! slightly strange thing tho since my board has been swopped I've caught some text on bootup saying EVAULATION ONLY after memory check - so think mine might be an early board - cant seem to figure out how to pause the boot sequence to catch it  look out for it when yours is swopped, nothing bad has come of it tho so far and all my performance figures are right! :) so if its not broke dont fix it hey? lol

    Hi Drill

Well the mobo has been replaced - I see the EVALUATION message you mentioned (well once). Laptop booted up ok, into windows, shut it down now wont restart - exactly same problem as yesterday!!! Looks like its not the mobo after all???

Now going to try and remove the DVD drive in case thats at fault - if not Dell are clueless as to whats the problem.

My confidence is now at 0% for this machine

For the most part...there is not much of a difference.

Scratch and dent is what it is.

Others...the laptop was shipped out and returned for whatever
reason. Many times it was never even opened. Other times
Dell pulls systems off the assembly line for quality control
and tested and then sent over to the refurb dept to be sold.

The only way an item can be sold as "New" is if the item
    has not been turned on.

One benefit of buying a refurb is knowing someone has turned
it on a tested it before shipping it out to you.

Also, if the unit left the Dell facility and was shipped back...it must
also be sold as a refurb even if the box is still sealed because it
    was out of Dell's hands.

    Jst FYI

    Received 1737 today, a day early...thats ok.
Everything checks just fine so far, very quiet running, small fan noise running seti. I think it had been turned on as setup went rather fast. Time zone was set for gmt -6 instead of the usual -8. Slowest segment was checking system for rating (5). I am happy with upgrade. Thanks to all for encouraging, knowledgable advice. Really like the lighted keyboard. Should be receiving 2nd drive soon for xp or 7.

I just received my Studio 1737 from the outlet for $600. Its got the crappiest screen option and a crappy CPU compared to my other laptop, but I bought it anyway just because it has blu-ray. :D Anyway I'm happy with the condition, which looks like no one touched it since it came out of the factory.

Just a heads up on my Outlet Studio 1737...

I shipped it back today. I had it for a week, and within that time frame I had multiple issues.

    1. Bluetooth stopped working, would not recognize anything anymore.
    2. While playing WoW, sounds just went out for about 10 minutes, then came back.
    3. It would take a CD/DVD every 1 out of 10 times, otherwise, it just kept spitting it back out to me.

Granted I didn't pay much, but what I saw there was enough for me... I'm sure some Refurbs are just perfect, but I'm not sure I'll chance the Outlet again.

I've noticed that my refurb would crash while it is sleeping.
I put it into sleep mode every night & every morning I would find that the laptop is running & had restarted itself and Vista tells me that it's had a 'blue screen'.

You can actually have a BSOD in sleep? Way to go Vista (my very first computer with Vista).

Tyxand- Re: OFFICIAL: Studio 17 Owner's Thread

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all. I am new to NR! I just ordered my Studio 17 on Friday and its in production!

Before purchasing it i went to Staples to see a model in person. I was very impressed. Photos have not done justice to the design. If Studio line really is "polarizing" as reviewers have said, i definitely land on the pro side.

However there is one issue i just dont understand. Its the much discussed "milk stain" "topographic" design on the palm rest. Some people have them, some do not. Staples had three models on display :

    1. Studio 1737 with no milk stain, mid night blue cover
    2. Studio 1537 with no milk stain, red cover
    3. Studio 1537 milk stain, red cover

Possibly its a coincidence, but the milk stained one had the finger print reader. Anyways, there was no way of chosing no stain or with stain at checkout at dell, as im sure you all are aware. I have read all over the net for some answer as to why some have the stain and some dont, but cant find the answer.
so my question is, is there some way of knowing if its going to come with the pattern or not?
Is there some way of seeing it in itemized list dell sounds out after purchase? Does anyone?

Final thoughts: That design is a abomination. maybe it looks good on the graphite gray cover, but i doubt it. I dont want it on my computer.

Thanks in advance. Im happy to finally join in on the discussion!
I had a 1735 with the graphite, I have a pics posted but now sure if you can see the design. It does not look bad on the graphite. I just hope you don't have as many issues as I had with both of mine the first one ordered and the exchange. Issues range from mobo being defective, Dell PC tune not working right, hard drive errors right out the box and very poor customer service. It took going to the Better Business Bureau to finally get Dell to do anything. It was a shame as I liked the size and set up but nothing work or worked all the time. Media keys would hang up and would freeze up if I had to many things going at once and I had the laptop maxed out with the options available but after fighting with Dell for six months it went back and I just got my money back and I purchased this thru my companies epp purchasing plan. In the long run it was not worth it from the total disregards for its customer, long times spent on the phone getting transfered from dept to dept as no one would take ownership of the issue and placed blame on other parts of the laptop and only this dept could handle the issue. It did not work right out of the box. I wish you the best and hope you are one of the lucky ones who does not have any problems with yours.

This will not be able to play games

You needed one with an ATI HD 3650 256MB dedicated graphics card. These use ATI's Turbo RAM which uses as much extra system RAM to improve performance especially DDR2 800mhz RAM faster the better.

I have the ATI 3650, I can run Crysis and Crysis Warhead at Medium settings no AA, at like 1440x900 and its ok because of my Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53GHz CPU and 6MB cache and 1066Mhz FSB which helps speed things up.

I can even load Full Maxium Ultra high settings but I get like 4 frames per second.

a built in Intel 4500HD will not play Crysis at all.

Any odd things in the keyboard.
Hello I am considering purchasing a Studio 17 would you please advise me if there are any odd key placements. I have noticed on the hp dv7 the left shift key is not double sized as it is on a regular keyboard. This is a dealbreaker for me. Any such problems with the Studio 17. Unfortunately in Canada it is difficult to locate an actual store that physically carries the studio 17

    thanks

just loaded vista x64 and my progs are working much better - windows experience went from 4.9 to 5.0 :D --- so what if it really doesn't have much real-world bearing, it still gave me a tiny thrill!

I have the ati card driving the WUXGA screen which is amazing - so pleased after hearing some bad reports on this and other forums, but it has run HL2 & CS:Source with high-ish resolution and no jumping etc., I am so glad I took the decision to get the High definition screen although i did initially get a scare (will post pictures later).

I am running Vista x64 with absolutely no problems. I have a clean device manager and it runs much better than Vista x32. I just tried upgrading to 8gb ram but it won't boot. I throttled back to 6gb and it works great. Noticeably faster. My main applications I use are Visual Studio 2008, SQL 2008, and VMWare. The bump from 4gb - 6gb really improves when I have a couple of VMware environments running.

Truth be told I am running Vista SP1 64-bit, and with everything compared to XP Pro I am happy with Vista 64bit SP1.

And with all the hype and hoopla about Windows 7 I will not be upgrading until I see Windows 7 SP1.

Gaming wise Vista SP1 is fine its fast its pretty, no freezes.

And running a 64-bit operating system has so many benefits 4GB RAM really shines.

I can not see why people would downgrade their Laptops to run XP ???

for what maybe and extra few frames per second in gaming?

Obviously a Laptop running XP Pro SP3 vs. the same laptop running Vista 64 SP1. Will feel faster, for example in my case a Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53GHz 6MB cache cpu. and 1066MHz FSB.

But Vista SP1 64-bit is much more efficient and capable at managing 2 CPU cores and using large cache sizes.

New studio 17 owner here with a question. While playing movied using the hdmi output to my hd tv, the screensaver seems to come on every 15 mins or so. I went to power settings and changed the time on the screen saver, but it still goes to a blue screen until I bump the mouse again.

    Thanks in advance

Go change your power settings and set when to turn the monitor off on idle. Or create a power scheme that doesn't turn the monitor off and use that one while playing movies.

90 days and lovin' my 1737!

I have Vista 64 bit installed...all the drivers work very well and
    I love the computer!!

I had to go out and get a BluRay and a ATI Radeon 3650 badge/sticker
to sport on the palmrest...but all in all it has been an awesome unit!

My wife thinks the touchpad should be more in the center than off to the
left of the palmrest...it's fine to me.

I recommend the unit to anyone!

I tried Win 7 on my Studio 17 while I had it a few weeks back and I didn't run into any issues, it seemed to run pretty smoothly.

I have blu-ray in my M1530 with Win7 on it and that runs fine as well, no problems. Windows 7 won't play the blu-rays so you have to reinstall your powerdvd or windvd that came with it.

Does this thread include the discussion of the dell Studio 1735 ?

What are the specifications for the charger of the above ?

Will only a dell charger work ?

Just about any DELL Charger will work, but there's 2 types that I know will work for sure in this laptop.

90W adapters is what the Studio 17 ships with. Most of these are PA-10 adapters, however the new Latitude chargers are PA-3E, they are 90W as well and will work just the same. Plus the new Latitude chargers have their "ON" LED on the adapter tip, its blue and looks cool.

65W adapters will work, but the battery won't charge as fast, and your system may seem slower if you are gaming or doing processor intensive tasks (surfing the web, e-mail, word, etc, you won't notice a difference). This is the PA-12 adapter.

Just about every Dell, besides for the M1730 and Minis, uses the same type of adapter tip.

I have a question regarding drivers. I upgraded my 1737 Windows Vista 64-bit and I have all of the drivers except for one:

    Intel(R) ICH9M LPC Interface Controller - 2919

It's listed as an unknown device and I haven't been able to find the driver. Any help would be appreciated :D .

Install the IR (Infra-Red Reciever) driver - available from the Dell driver download site:

Ordered a Dell Studio 1737 today with expected delivery March 9th. Good value I think.

    Cdn $928.00 + tax

    Studio 1737
    T6600 2.2Ghz
    3GB,DDR2,800MHZ,2 DIMM
    56 WHR 6-CELL,LION
    NO FINGER PRINT READER
    17.0 INCH WXGA+ TL(CCFL) W/ CAMERA,INSP
    BACK-LIT KEYBOARD
    250G HARD DRIVE, 7200RPM
    WIN VISTA SP1 HOME PREM
    INT 370 BLUETOOTH WIRELESS
    INTEL 5100 WRLS-N

Thought the Vista 32bit edition would cause me fewer headaches than the 64

Do you think the battery will drain faster with the faster 7200rpm HD?
Dell rep told me no, but I don't take his word for it.

Can those experienced with the Intel 5100 or Dell 1510 wireless card comment on their effectiveness?
    ie. range / speed

Hi guys, I just bought in a shop this laptop.
The problem is that I want to mount a second hard disk, but I live in Ireland and I cannot purchase the carrier assembly from dell.com(usa) as it's not sold in Ireland. Is there any alternative?
Can I buy just the adapter?Which ones would be eventually good to me?
