I would wait for the official release of Windows 7. From what I have been reading it is one heck of an upgrade to Vista and if you are using the beta you will need to redo everything anyway

Can you buy it direct from the dell site? It is not exactly a protected high-tech item.

It is $10.99 and is all you need for 2nd drive. I put a 500g 2nd drive in my 1737, no problems.

Who is still happy with the Studio 1737??

after 3 months now I am thinking I should have gone smaller, thing is an Aircraft carrier.

But after adding in 2GB of Intel Turbo Memory to the mini PCi slot

and switching to a nice 60GB SSD. Battery life is easily over 4 hours with heavy use and CPU on high performace.

My next swap will be to a Intel T9800 from the T9400 I have now.

Which mini-PCI express slot did you swap for 2GB Intel Turbo Memory?

I would love to have that one too, but my Studio 17's three mini-PCI express slots are all used.

That is very interesting, regarding the Intel Turbo Memory. Do you think this would be possible on the Studio 1537 as well? Am I good as long as there is an open Mini-PCI express slot?

Not sure but I know that on the 1737 there are 3 mini PCI Express slots

    #1. Used by WiFi
#2. For Sprint or Verizon 3G data
    #3. For internal Bluetooth

So I used 1 for Intel Turbo memory basically its built in Ready Boost HDD light rarely comes on.

And the other mini PC Express slot I want to use for an Internal HDTV Tuner but I am worried about reception and Antenna use.

AFAIK, Studio 15 also has 3 internal mini PCI express slots in the same arrangement: 1 half card slot for WiFi, 2 full card slots for WPAN (bluetooth) & WWAN (3G/HSDPA).

You mean that you still have 1 empty slot?

Unfortunately mine is full. It's a pity that the bluetooth card doesn't come in 1 card with WiFi, cause bluetooth card actually has a half space empty which can be occupied with WiFi chips...

Why the cpu (intel T3200 ) is stuck to 1ghz?
I have 2 dell studio mounting an intel T3200, which should be running at a maximum of 2ghz.
But I discovered that on my two laptop it runs always at minimum (1ghz= fsb 166 x 6) even under heavy load. I don't understand the reason.
I tried OCCT 3.01 but even under stress it keeps at 1ghz. After I bought the 2 laptops, I used the dell cd to reinstall vista (in order to have a clean system), and I installed all the drivers. I have also installed the sp2 v.286 (the latest rc).
Anyone know what could be the reason?

This is the main reason why I didn't get Internal Bluetooth because it was a waste of a vital Mini PCI Express slot.

now maybe next year I can grab a cheap T9800 should be just plug in easy swap same voltage same everything as my current T9400 same 35watt TDP

    2.53ghz jump to 2.93Ghz I'll pay $150

I have Wifi and Bluetooth mini cards in my Studio 17. Do I need to get a full size or half size Turbo Memory card to fit in the last slot or would either of them work?

is there much advantage to using turbo memory over the route I've taken with a 4GB SD card permanently in the built-in card reader for readyboost?

I would go for Intel Turbo memory for 2 Reasons, no make that 3 reasons.

#1. Its internal and hidden away you still get to keep your SD card slot open.

#2. Its faster than SD cards because depending on what type or brand of SD card you get affects the speed and performance.

#3. I tried the SD card type Ready Boost method and Windows kept disk thrashing spinning the hard drive pre-cacheing as much as possible to the SD card, that soaks up battery juice, and is a pain. I am pretty sure this method also eats up some CPU cycles too. Intel Turbo Memory is just there no CPU cycles wasted it acts like Ready Boost but better if you are lucky enough and have an Intel Motherboard that supports its natively its supported at no cost to your CPU.

with Intel Turbo memory you really have a boost at all times and if anything its saving power because the laptop does not access the hard drive as much. This is independantly proven by Anandtech.com in much detail.

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3009&p=1

I suggest reading the article they start off hating Intel Turbo Memory but after detailed testing and meeting with Intel they do see measureable benefits. Also they tested with 1GB if you get 2GB or 4GB you will get better results, Early Intel Turbo chips were 512MB and 256MB not enough to keep the Hard drive spun Down.

With newer 1GB and 2GB chips the benefits really shine. and the Ready Drive technology keeps the hard drive stopped unless it needs new data, so its Ready Drive and Ready Boost. Plus now Vista SP-1 really improves Ready Drive and Ready Boost to a point where its automatic and more efficient.

    And just for the doubters

http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/itm/sb/CS-025854.htm supported chipsets PM45 is a supported 4 series chipset.

    http://www.intel.com/Products/Notebook/Chipsets/PM45/PM45-technicaldocuments.htm

http://www.laptopbbs.com/sager-np8660-user-review/ You have Montevieniea you have Intel Turbo Memory 2.0

Good idea on the 4GB because Intel Turbo Memory works differently than Ready Boost.

2GB of it would be used for Ready Boost which acts as RAM. The other 2GB which really saves battery juice acts as a Hard Drive and its called Ready Drive. Basically as if your HDD has a 2GB cache buffer instead of a 16MB or 8MB cache buffer.

How about for 1735? Has anyone tried the 4GB Intel Turbo Memory in Intel Mobile 965 Express platform?

I'm under assumption that Intel Turbo Memory for Santa Rosa platform is limited to 1 GB max.

Yeah, I'll probably go with the 4GB.
I looked at some of the videos on the Intel website, the "User Pinning" program that comes with the chip looks pretty nifty.
I'm guessing that what is available for the Centrino 2 platform is actually Turbo Memory 2.0, right?

Hi, just got a studio 1737, beautiful big beast that I'm very happy with, my problems lie with vista - I've just discovered vista does not support adobe premiere pro 1.5 - it loads but freezes when trying to open - after a bit of research (my fault in buying before finding out) it seems to be a well known issue with vista
Anyway my query is that I would like to go back to xp where prem pro 1.5 & cs3 both work ok on my desktop. My worry is that I may not be able to use all the features of my 1737, such as blue ray, webcam, dell media direct, bluetooth etc if I load xp on - does Dell support drivers in xp for all these features?
No point in having this if I'm not going to be able to use some of the features.
Also could anyone tell me if prem pro cs3 works better in vista or xp, I'm new to vista & other than being more resource thirsty, what are the benefits if any of keeping vista?
many thanks if anyone can help

Hi! I just got a Studio 1737 last week. So far aside from some Windows related issues (Windows 7 Beta nuked my Blackberry...no worries I fixed it  ) I seem to like it. I am coming from a Macbook Pro, which I absolutely LOVE...but it's a Core Duo, 1.5 gb RAM and an 80 GB hard drive, and aside from the HD not much I can upgrade. I would have loved to have a new one but it would have cost me twice as much (at least) as the gigantic Studio. :)

So my only issue seems to be the trackpad. I've installed the latest drivers from Dell's website, but it just seems to go haywire sometimes. It won't respond or it moves away from where I'm trying to get it to go...little frustrating. I upgraded the BIOS tonight...so I'll see if that helps..otherwise, any ideas? Or have any of ya'll had similar problems?

    Thanks!

Your talking about the touchpad not responding for a few seconds, right?
That is a fairly widespread issue, it happens on my Studio 1537 as well.

Yeah it's annoying. It's like it just goes where ever it wants to for a bit and then it's fine. I've noticed it particularly when the hard drive is being accessed (the light is flickering) or when the fan is running. Just wasn't sure if there were new drivers or some sort of fix. I bought it from the outlet, so I wanted to make sure it was a known issue vs. a RMA type issue.

    Thanks!

    Hi Guys;

I'd appreciate your opinions on the Studio 17. I'm thinking about purchasing one for java nad .net development. However, it would be nice to play some games on it once in a while. Do you think this config would handle games like COD4?

    Studio 17:
    Core Duo T9550 (2,66ghz/1066mhz)
    4gb DDR2 at 800mhz
256MB ATI mobility Radeon HD 3650
17" hi res glossy screen (1920x1200)
    cost $1674

    Thanks for your help!

I have not played COD4, but I have read reviews on the Studio 17, and that is a pretty good configuration. I imagine that it would be playable on medium graphics settings.
I have a Studio 15(37) with the ATI MRadeon HD3450, Vista gives it a 4.0 for a performance rating. I havn't played any intense games on it yet (like Flight Sim X), but I can do 3D modeling in AutoCAD 2008 pretty smoothly.

I have a new studio 17 on the way in the next couple of weeks and had a couple questions about the pre-installed software.

    1. It comes with McAfee preinstalled. I don't want it, how do I completely uninstall this program.

    2. It comes with adobe reader. Is this actually free with the system or is it something that one has to buy a license for after X amount of time.

    3. It comes with "entertainment and editing software" "Wild Tangent Games". What is this, just miscellaneous games? Is this free with the system or something that needs to be purchased after X amount of time? About the only game I play is windows solitaire two or three times a year. Any reason to keep this on the system? If not how do I completely remove it?

    4. It has "Dell Online backup 2gb for 1 year". What is this? Do I need it? Is it something I can delete from the system?

    5. I opted out of the pre-installed productivity software as I want to install my own copy of office 2003. Is this going to be a problem with vista?

    6. I am a longtime xp user and this will be my first exposure to vista. I've heard a bunch of negative things about it but I think I'll stick with it rather than trying to install xp on the machine. Is there any things that can or should be done to optimize vista?

    Thanks
    Andy

Use the uninstall program and then do a search to find a McAfee removal program.

    Adobe reader is free.

Uninstall it. It is free but should be easy to uninstall from Control Panel, Programs and Features.

This will have a link on your system to log onto the website. It is just a place where you can store 2 gb of files. Delete the link if you don't want to use it.

No problem. I've got it installed on my system and it works great.

I fought moving to Vista, too. But when I did I was pleasantly surprised that I like it better and it is much easier to do a lot of things. I can't stand working on a computer with XP anymore.

Control Panel - System - Advanced System Settings. Under Performance select settings and turn off any of the visual effects that you don't like or need.

Congrats on your new computer :)

Just purchased a Dell Studio 17 on 3/6 from dell outlet, delivered 3/12. An economic configurations, which I like very much. It takes $667 including tax and shipping.

Studio 1737 Intel Core Duo T6400, 2 GHz,
    3GB, DDR2, 800MHz 2 Dimm
    250G 5400RPM SATA HD
Hi Res, Glossy Widescreen 17" RGB LED 1920x1200
    ATI Mob/Rad HD 3650
    8X DVD/RW
    Intel 5100 Wireless-N Half Mini-Card
    6 Cell Battery
no bt, no wwan, no backlight.

I really want a backlight keyboard, but the day I grabbing this baby is really a mess at dell outlet.

I change my st 7200.3 320G to it and install a clean win7, runs fantastic. The graphic card has drive installed after installing win 7, but can not install ATI catalyst controller on it. It made a little bit difficult to tune the oversaturated screen. Anyone has the method to instal ATI catalyst on Win 7?

I finally managed to get hold of a 2nd hdd caddy in the UK and have now installed an additional 250GB drive (500gb total at the moment). I have them partitioned so that the 1st drive runs Windows 7 (RC1 build 7057) and vista sp1 in dual boot, the new drive holds a copy of Ubuntu 8.10 and various other partitions. I have found that moving the pagefile from Windows7 and Vista onto the 2nd hard drive has def improved performance.

I have a question however - when i select F12 at boot up to choose which device to boot from I see the Hard Drive option displayed with a + next to it but I cant expand it to select which drive I want to boot from - I have to go into the bios and change the boot order there, does anyone know how to change the boot order from the F12 prompt?

I ordered a 1737 last Tuesday after testing one out for a week. Haven't received it yet but it has shipped. The test machine had an Intel 5100 which worked terribly on my router so I ordered a 5300 in my spec - I hope it works better than the 5100 did.

I also got XP working 100% on the test machine so I'd say I'll be using it on my own one for the time being, at least until Windows 7 is out. I'm pretty sure I found the right XP IR driver for it (it's WHQL certified for XP and installs properly) but the test machine hadn't got the remote. However my 1737 does have one so I'll give it a go.

Anyway, here's the spec I ordered. It came to €1276 in total, got a free mouse and 4 year onsite warranty in the price:

    Base: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor P8600 (2.40Ghz, 3MB, 1066MHz)
    Memory: 4096MB 800MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2x2048]
Keyboard: Internal English Qwerty Backlit Keyboard
Video Card: 256MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3650
Hard Drive: 500GB (5.400rpm) Serial ATA Dual Hard Drive (2x 250GB)
Microsoft Operating System: Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium SP1 - English
Mouse: Free Logitech V220 Cordless Mouse Black - 'Designed for Dell'
    Optical Devices: Blu-Ray ROM Drive (read/write CD/DVD & read Blu-Ray Disc)
Wireless Networking: Intel WiFi Link 5300 Half Mini Card (802.11 a/g/n) (Centrino)
Enhanced Service Packs: 4Yr In-Home Warranty Support, including evenings and Saturdays
Bluetooth: Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module
Primary Battery: Primary 9-cell 85 WHr Lithium Ion battery
Colour Choice: Jet Black Colour with Matte Finish
TV Tuner and Remote Control: Travel Remote Control Express Card
LCD: 17.0" Widescreen WXGA+ WLED (1440x900) TFT Display with TrueLife™

Have you tried the latest driver form Intel website? There's a new Intel GMA driver dated March 2009.

Well, I got my Studio 1737 on the 17th,originally scheduled for shipment on the 31st. Surprised and thrilled.

This is my first Laptop and its taking some getting used to.

The immediate positives are the 17" Hi Res.RGB LED 1920x1200 screen.

Awesome speed with the T9550 2.66/1066 and 6MB Cache

    Backlit keyboard .

Vista is not that big a deal, not sure why all the hub-bub.

No issues or complaints as of yet, a real nice machine and the grey(Topo look} with red trim is fuuristic and has a manly appearance(sorry ladies).

Does anyone know if there is a patch or something like it to keep the touch-buttons lit all the time? By touch-buttons i am talking about the black strip with media direct, dvd function buttons, and the eject button.

They are nice to have, but i can't see them at all unless i look very close!

Thank you for your time and help.

Well I finally have my Studio 1737. I originally ordered it on the 31st of Jan and received the first one on the 25th of the following month; I am in Iraq so it takes some time to travel. The first Studio had a problem with extreme heat on the top right of the media panel so I called Dell and they offered to send a new motherboard and heat sink but I did not think that would solve the issue. I talk with tech support and removed the media panel to discover that the LCD monitor cable was well over 140 degrees and you could smell plastic melting. Dell sent a replacement and here it is the 26th of Mar. I don't feel like bashing Dell for the delay because I know the issue with mailing things to this country. What I don't understand is why after having purchased three laptops and three desktops over the years, all from Dell, they could have tried at least a little to compensate me for the money it will cost to return the furnace I received earlier and the time I have lost being able to communicate leisurely with my family. You know maybe a little upgrade here or there.

    Just a bit peeved

My 1737 arrived last Wednesday however I had to get it shipped to my parents' house and I only got out there today. The LCD screen (LED backlit) has an ID of Monitor\LGD01A0. I'm guessing it's an LG panel rather than an LG/Philips one.

So far so good, though I've only had it on for about an hour. However I intend to put a fresh installation on it to eliminate the crapware.

Hey you guys so how can I tell what my RGB LED panel ID is???

not sure if my 1737 has an LG or what type. Which types are there??

And if this whole RGB LED are so much better than just LED backlighting, why haven't HDTV companies adopted it for HDTV's

    mine is LGD01B3.
go to device manager, find monitor-pnp, rit click--detail--drop down list,
    hardware id.

i have studio 17 for a week now, just rly happy with this computer, cant say the same thing with gateway p7811fx.
studio 17 is more lean toward multimedia use, great lcd in rgb led, the sound quality is excelent, exterior design looks pleasant.
other than ati video card isnt gamers 1st choice and 9 cell battery makes this laptop even bulky.

i have had dell 1705/dell 1720/xps m1730 and studio 1737, this one is clearly the most satisfactory.

    Hey guys, quick question...

A friend of mine got a studio 17 a couple months ago. I'm not sure what the specs are but he is having constant video lag when watching any type of streaming video online, ie: yahoo news, cnn news, hulu.com. He uses IE 7.0. and the videos usually lag or hang every 5-10 seconds or so.
He has reloaded adobe flash and even tried different "bandwidth" settings in the flash player but no luck. I tried searching, but couldn't find anything.

Anyone got an ideas for a fix?
