    I just realized one thing:
the est ship dates for orders placed from 4/28 to 5/19 (listed in this thread) are ALL 5/28, very strange. what r they waiting for? 6-cell or 250G HD?

    Mine was plced on 5/13

Mine was placed on 5/19 and the ESD is 6/4.
I'd kill for a 5/28 ESD...even if it is only 7 days sooner...

I sell you my 5/28 ESD. And as a bonus I'll throw in 10 pounds of used Kleenex. The two are probably worth about the same.

From what I've heard dell is good about calling their ship dates accurately or even shipping early...

I think in general that's true. But if there are backorders on parts (as many suggest is the case with the 6 cell battery right now) then all bets are off.

My ESD is 5/28. But here on Friday afternoon I'm still in Build...12 days now. Given that Dell says no build progress occurs on weekends and holidays, I can expect to still be in Build on Tuesday morning. Since Boxing (read: flying the unit from Malaysia to Tennessee) alone can take 3 days, no way mine ships by Wednesday. Sometime on Wednesday I'll get a revised ESD...probably 15 days out from the original.

I've gone on their website and the don't list any parts as adding to the build time...idk though...

Has anyone here heard about this 6-cell battery problem from a credible source?

No. But allegedly some folks here have been told this by dell reps while others have been told there are no backorders. I will say this...at least two other guys on here ordered nearly identically spec'd machines as mine on the exact same day...except they ordered 9 cell batteries. Both of them had their notebooks shipped last week. Mine...well, it hasn't budged since the day it was ordered.

I wouldn't put much faith in Dell not noting any particular part delays on the order page. There are at least two guys here still waiting on orders placed in late April. If there are no parts backorders, then you'd think their orders would have shipped by now, since many orders placed since have shipped. Why would they be leapfrogged like that unless there was a parts shortage of some sort?

Dunno if the reps really count as 'credible' at this point, but I got an email from one the other day saying that the 6-cell batteries are backordered. *shrug*

Yeah, but even it that's the case you've got lots of time to still make that 6/4 ESD. And who knows, you still might see it early. :)

(assuming it is the batteries) I'm thinking dell is expecting them to come between today and the 28th, which is why it seems like a common ESD...
    Just seems to make sense...

I'm betting my computer goes into testing at the end of next week or the beginning of the week after...I know my ESD is pretty reasonable...but still, it's hard waiting for a new toy...especially this one.

I can't get past the green sidelights on that one. (I think that's the one with the green lights anyway.) I use my laptop for business as well as personal, and those green light are just too much. I'll be ordering the ASUS M50sv-a1. Of course, if my XPS has actually advanced to Testing by my ESD, that'll be cool since there's an actual end in sight. But if it's still stuck in "Build" then I'll cancel and buy the ASUS.

Could be. I'm sure they get huge shipments of everything all the time. Wonder what the backlog is of systems waiting on 6 cell batteries? That's probably the most common component selected. Honestly, you'll probably be fine. No way they hit mine, but as I said above, if it's progressed to the next stage by then I'll stick it out. If not...hello ASUS. It's ridiculous to wait a month for a laptop. I'm certainly not doing it.

I think that is a good idea. I guess I will do the same, since it is apparent that haggling with the CSR has no effect on the time it takes to produce the laptop. I don't really care about the side lights, as I am pretty sure those can be turned off, but I would like decent gaming performance for Crysis. Both laptops, according to me, are in a dead heat right now. Both offer the performance I want, and both are within my price range. The only benefit is that the M1530 is thinner and costs about $100 less than the ASUS. I am seriously considering dumping the Dell for Asus. I have ALWAYS been a loyal customer to Dell for seven years now. I would just hate to dump them, but if it comes to that, I will.

Yeah...it does seem pretty silly not to have such a major component in laptops...if that is the problem that is....

This wouldn't be so bad if I had a decent way to entertain myself...but no...i've got nothing until my laptop arrives and/or my girlfriend gets back...

Yeah. I actually ordered the XPS before I was really aware of the ASUS. I mean, obviously I was aware of ASUS but I'd never really examined their notebook product line or considered them. Once the XPS wait started I looked at them more closely and dang, they've got some nice notebooks priced very reasonably. The M50sv that I've spec'd out is about $150 cheaper than what I'm paying for the XPS, and the M50 has the T9300 vs the T8300 I ordered on the XPS. I do have to give higher marks to the XPS in the looks department though. Everyone has different personal tastes obviously, but I really prefer the sleek lines of the M1530 over the heftier-looking M50.

I'll ride the M1530 pony for a few more days and see what happens. But I have to admit that if I'd not placed any orders yet and was looking at both from scratch, I might choose the ASUS heads up. I definitely won't consider it "settling" in any way if I end up cancelling the M1530 order and going another direction.

Apparently there was a fire in some major battery manufacturing plant recently and that's what's causing the shortage. Or so the story goes here on the interwebz.

Hookers. Beer. What's the problem?

I think I am going to go with the M1530. I just went on the Dell website again and I looked at the M1530 and looked at the G1Sn. It truly looks beautiful, and I guess I will wait while I am listening to Symphony No. 5 by Mahler. I guess I'll just ride it out even if they delay it for two more weeks or something. Oh Dell XPS M1530 when commest thou to me?

Uh, no. I already stated before my ESD is June 12th though my order was placed on May 13th. It was in Testing stage yesterday, I called today and it is in the Boxing stage.

Estimated ship date is still June 12th.... :/ I think it'll ship sooner I hope.

Oh man Fountainhead, i feel you.. I just got mine yesterday (ordered April 25th..). Yeah, I was also told, numerous times, and from several different people at Dell, including a top Dell executive, that the 6-cell was the issue.

Hang in there, your patience will be rewarded soon, I can feel it :)

There was a Battery Plant fire on March 3rd @ LG Chem the second largest S. Korean manufacture of laptop batteries causing a global shortage. Check out http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/26/fire-at-battery-plant-threatens-global-supply-of-exploding-lapto/

    or Google it.

What I really want to report is I recieved a voice mail from a Dell account manager today (Sat.) at 11:45am PST letting me know that I did get upgraded free of charge to next day shipping. My order now shows ESD 5/28 & EDD 5/29.

Like Fountainhead has said I don't see how that is going to happen but we shall see.

I have the identical specs as yours except 9-cell battery. I ordered a 6-cell last week for 40 bucks on ebay, brand new. Screenwise I ordered WXGA+ LED Backlit display. Ordered on May 13th, ESD is June 12th, though... its in boxing stage starting yesterday, so... maybe... It'll ship out Tuesday after memorial day. *hoping*

Aww...I'd probably get sidetracked stopping at Cheetah's in Windsor and forget why I was going up there. You're probably safe.

Notice that I'm complaining on some random forum...not to Dell.
I wouldn't have bought a computer from them if I didn't consider them the best system for the money...

Let us know if that results in anything positive. I've tried calling them several times, but it seems like the reps actually know very little as to what's going on during the "production" stage. Although other than that I think their support is actually quite good as I had a replacement keyboard for a different lappy sent out only a few hours after I talked to a rep and it was delivered the next morning. They should start to realize that complete lack of information given to the customers is way worse than simply saying that they're running into parts shortage. I will try to get my order upgraded to one-day shipping though as compensation for the delay.
