I really don't agree with the people stating that Montevina is not a big deal. And why the hell was the Penryn update bigger than the Montevina update?
With Penryn, we got new, faster processors at a smaller die size, just another processor evolution I'd say, whoop die doo!
With Montevina we now have new processors plus a whole lot more and the Montevina platform paves the way for many more new processors at a higher FSB than the Penryn CPUs back in January, quad-core mobile chips and many more low voltage chips.
The way I understood it, Penryn changed nothing for notebooks other than the CPU speeds.
With Montevina we get, like talin said:
"When it comes to systems with integrated graphics, montevina brings significant enough improvements.
Not to mention, decreased power consumption, and increased FSB for both the RAM and CPU, gigabit ethernet, just to mention a few."
Plus, we've got DDR3 support, the Hybrid SLI possibilities and a new N draft. The decreased power consumption for the CPU means about THIRTY percent lower TDP for the P-series, which is huge to me as they're also affordable and the P9500 seems to have all of the features / speed that the high end T9*** series had.
In addition to all this, the chipset as a whole is much smaller as well, which bodes well for smaller and lighter laptops (without compensating speed) and / or more space for a bigger GPU chip for instance.
Of course, impact of Montevina is a personal preference for everyone, but to me it all sounds way too good to pass up as I'm not in a hurry. And as no company has released the 'perfect' Montevina notebook yet in my opinion (well, except for the Sony Z series, but way too expensive), I'm still waiting for Dell.
And I really expected them to have announced at least SOMETHING on the Home side by now.

Well - as I've now ordered an XPS M1330, you are absolutely guaranteed to see a whole new line of XPS laptops about 2 days after mine arrives...
So, look for it in the 2nd week of September...
Philip -
does this mean they are only going to get rid of the xps laptop line, or both desktop and laptop.
they cant make a studio hybrid desktop as its wayy to small, and a inspiron is just junk, i hope they arnt doing that as i want a desktop and pc.
when are the nehalem/capella processors coming out?
as after christmas they are cheap, or otherwise i will get one within DEC 08-JUNE 09 -
) is the replacement for Montevina and it won't be around until about this time next year.
-
is nehalem going to be quad core for laptops?
what is capella going to do? -
There is actually a quad core Penryn CPU out or soon, but it is about $1200. There will be both 2 core and 4 core mobile Nahalem chips. Calpella is just the chipset name, like Montevina right now or Santa Rosa previously.
-
correct me if im wrong, so:
ATM, they are still useing penryn CPU's with the montevina chipset.
when nehalem comes out, they will use montevina chipset and nehalem processors?
am i right?
Also, will the nehalem be 4 cores?
as i would really like a 4 core cpu by about july next year. i know theres a quad core coming soon but its a core 2 extreme and they cost a LOT!
are dell getting rid out laptop xps range or both their laptop and desktop xps range? -
custom90gt Doc Mod Super Moderator
When nehalem comes out, it will run on the calpella platform. Nehalem will not be compatible with montevina at all.
Nehalem will have 2 and 4 core variants.
Its rumored that dell is not going to have an xps line of laptops, the name will be reserved for the high end models of the inspiron and studio series laptops (aka ones with better dedicated graphics...). -
-
well August 24th is over here... lets hope maybe theyll anounce somethign about the xps's today, as the rest of the world is only in the early hours of the day of August 24th...
-
That reminds me, the rumored M1340 release date was 8/24. Maybe this will be our lucky week.

Well, Dell lost me as a customer solely because of Montevina. I bought an Asus G50V. Sorry Dell, maybe next time you won't be the last notebook manufacturer to update your systems...
-
Well, Apple still hasn't, but that's not unusual.
I'm just hoping these are awesome. Wouldn't be hard, given how incredibly mediocre everyone else is, except maybe Gateway with their updated FX which is an even better value than before. -
-
i have been checking there site like every few days since montevina, but dell seem to be very lazy
penryn was faster processors.
montevina is fast proocessors and ram, as they have quicker cpu's with higher fbs for cpu and ram.
so nehalem is only going to be for capella which is being released in Q3 2009, i am not waiting that long just for a quad, il just get a montevina dell soon instead. T9600 looksanyway

Guys, this makes perfect sense. My shameless speculation below...
Dell is waiting for the end of back-to-school computer purchases. They are mostly over now, and Dell has some great sales for the XPS and Studio line this weekend. I bet they are selling down stock to update the Studio line with Montevina and the frameless screens soon, as well as new XPS computers.
They will do something in Sept for sure to be ready for the holiday season. The longer that Dell waits, the more likely I am to get a new HD and battery for the i9300 and use it another year. Due to their delays, I'm now waiting to see what the new MacBook pro looks like. -
Yeah, i need an anouncement at least, dont care if it comes out in a month or two, i just want to know whether there is gonna be something soon and know what is in it. Wouldnt mind also a schematic/outline of the new laptops, so we can get a gist of what they will look like
-
There are at least rumors that Apple's FINALLY supporting Blu Ray (I think they've held off to push their dippy video store
), and also rumors the new Macbook Pro will *FINALLY* have a user replaceable hard drive. Throw in a good GPU and I'll certainly look at it.
That said, I got the impression that Apple's notebooks aren't really made to be used. They're made for people who want it to look a certain way, and use the CPU at 2% running Word or whatever.
I get that impression because if you actually run the CPUs or GPU at 100%, it has to get LOUD and HOT, fast. It also can't run at 100% with it's battery out-massively underclocks it, as apparently it uses the battery to make up for a too small PSU.
Meanwhile the Dell I was using over the weekend I had the CPU pegged at 100% the whole time, and it barely cared. Acted just like a good desktop, just didn't care what you through at it.
EDIT: I should mention I don't actually know that a Macbook Pro would fail any sooner than anything else just because it runs the fans loud-that could be a good thing for all I know. It just sort of makes me aware that "hey, this thing is really having a reaction to being pushed". The head of Folding @ Home actually uses and Folds on a Macbook Pro, so they might be fine. -
Dell maybe waiting because of the Nvidia fiasco. Sometimes there are reasons for things and I'm sure there is some method to Dells madness. Personally getting mad at dell is kinda a waste, if you need a laptop now and you NEED montevana then dell isn't your ticket look elsewhere. But you never know dell could be dragging their feet for some other reason.

The back to school sale should end on Thursday morning (US time), and they may present something after that date. Perhaps Monday next week?
-
There's a coupon good through the 5th though...so maybe the week after that? I don't know, this is getting goofy.
And what happened to that mini Inspiron? Everyone was talking about it last week, and then it just disappeared or something. I'm probably not interested (I have no real use for it), but at least it was something to think about while I wait, and wait, and... -
To be honest Im still banking on this being directly related to the Nvidia issues. Why come out with a new platform and use faulty chips when you may think of using another company for your GPU's. Now I dont have any proof or anything, lets just call it a hunch.
-
Didnt AMD announce something about a 4000 series laptop gpu coming soon? or was it just a figment of my imagination...
Since if Dell is waiting for those cards im really impressed that they may offer them beside the nvidia offerings (asside from the fact that i have to wait and wait and wait for endless days, scrummaging through notebookreview for any new info about the upcoming lappys. Im happy to see them thinking about it) -
I'm not holding my breath for that. Seems like ATi only got around to matching what were kind of unimpressive mid-range Nvidia parts from a year ago.
I think they've only once equaled or exceeded what Nvidia was doing, and that was years ago. It would be nice if they'd finally step it up and do competitive mobile parts though. -
48xx series in laptops, i would really love that as i know how power my 4850 is

lenovo u330 is similar to m1330 but with ATI and switchable graphics.....

sigh... if that deal came up in mid-july, i would've gotten the lenovo instead... -
Not for high end stuff though.
-
What. Is. Going. On.
APPLE's got rumors now-September 9th. Is APPLE going to beat Dell?
If they have a bumped GPU and a user replaceable hard drive...and especially if they finally add Blu Ray... -
-
If this is right new models will appear in November
-
Wow. That's astoundingly lame. And we don't even know what they'll be. That new model may well be worse than the 1530, and almost certainlly than the 1730.
It says the 1730 is going to continue being sold, so maybe, just maybe it'll get a feature-set bump.
Just throw in a single 9800GTS or better, the new chipset, and most importantly an LED backlit screen and I'll be happy as a clam. I actually already really like the basic design (seems like it's actually made to be pushed hard, unlike most notebooks), so...just update it a bit! -
), I'd burn that bridge, no, I'd set it ablaze.
-
-
-
-
-
Talin's not a major corp???? What's up with that?? -
The corp comment was in relation to his "burning bridges" comment . -
Lolz you two.
-
Good grief, we're nearly two months out from Intel's launch now, and months after Nvidia launched the 9800 parts.
-
Or you can play the waiting game like everyone else.
-
Any idea if they will be launching with WiMax? -
-
That's just the equivalent of these Verizon or Sprint cards though. It's not something that matters for most people (and if a Cell type network does for you, that would just be one of many choices).
I *just* configured a 1530 with 30% off with a $99 Mini for a decent price through the Home store. I'm so tempted, though why I don't know, because I want a better GPU, and I have no use for the Mini. Thinking of setting it up as a podcast/Tivo media conversion/Folding station or somethingWork that little sucker 24/7 with it's cute little 1 watt Atom CPU
-
I noticed that you are using win 2008 server on your studio 15. Any specific reason/advantages?
How good/bad is the 256MB ATI Radeon 3450 ?
