I got an M1730 for $1489. It has SLI 8700 which is good enough for now. I figure I can probably grab the 8800 SLI upgrade down the road if I really need it. Though I am going to bump the RAM up to 4 GB and probably buy two 250 GB hard drives for RAID. It has a T8400 too, so that should be good for me.

WiMax is in half a dozen cities max. If that's the big hold up then that's simply asinine.

Yes it is a refurb. I thought about ordering new to use the 12 months interest free, but after I upgraded the card ($2299) then added the drives I want and RAM it would end up being about $500 more.

Yeah, you can really spec this notebook out. Maybe in a year I will do an SSD RAID, but for now I think it should fit my needs for at least a year and a half. Hopefully two, so that I can graduate without buying any more notebooks, yeah right! This is number five this year

Congratulations on the new laptop though! I am leaning towards the M4400 or the HP 8530w.

Yeah thanks I'm excited about it. I already got my tracking number and it should be here Monday. Too bad my hard drives and RAM probably won't show up until Tuesday. So, we will see new Centrino 2 laptops on September 9th, one day after my 21 day return window. :D

Next month sounds like just an easy guess. I mean how could it NOT be next month? Except...how could it not be THIS month? :(

I'd buy that Studio 17 today with the deal that expires if I wasn't worried about being mad at myself later :(

Rumors..rumors..we've been hearing a bit of *this and that* for awhile ;) :) And, it's hard not order the S17, eh? ;) I understand..I want the Mini I..but am continuing to wait ~ instead of perusing other manuf's :)

I know how much each of us want the actual releases on the Dell's, that we are really looking forward to ordering!

It could be this month, or very well next...month.. :(

I guess for now we still have to have a little *patience* *sigh*.

Dell and Apple are the only two left that I'm aware of that have yet to release their montevina models (with the exception of the latitude and precision lines). Which also really surprises me, because if memory serves, Dell always waited around 6 months to update their business lines after updating the consumer ones.
Dell is really dropping the ball I think. There's been a lot of activity in the HP forum lately, and it's possible many got tired of waiting (like I'm starting to get) and so just bought an HP instead... :(
So, I think the title of this thread is very fitting.

Yeah, it is kind of sad to see them just sit back and offer nothing. Not even any leaks or anything. A bit disheartening. I like Dell, so I just got an M1730 and I'll take it from there.

Yuppers! Well you ordered the 1730..can't wait til you receive and tell us all about you new *power machine* lulz ;) :)

I'm interested in the Studio 17 myself, but I want to wait for the Studio XPS 16 model before I pull the trigger. At the very least, it would be nice if Dell made an announcement about the new Studio XPS models this week so I have an idea if I should wait or not.

Yeah, and what's so weird is until recently Dell was always MONTHS ahead of everyone else on all their hardware. And what's with their recent releasing the low end stuff first thing? Isn't that kind of backwards? Like don't you want to tempt people with the HIGH end stuff if you can't release it all at once?

I guess I'm missing the Studio 17 deal again. The stupid thing is it might be what I'd choose anyway based on price and it basically fitting my needs. But I want to make an educated choice.

What the FREAKING HECK IS DELL DOING!?! They're ALWAYS ahead of everyone...now Gateway has a system in Best Buy with a bumped CPU/Chipset and a completely modern 9800GTS GPU! Toshiba too!

    AT BEST BUY

BEST BUY is beating Dell. What the heck is going on?

Yes indeedy-do. It's got the new chipset/bumped Penryn AND a completely up to date GPU...and it's at Best Buy! Retail stores are supposed to be months/years behind Dell, not the other way around!

And that's not even the only one! Best Buy's got a Toshiba for a similar price with a worse GPU (think it's a 9700GT or GTS)-but that's STILL up to date.

If either of those had an LED backlit screen I'd get them, although I also want Blu Ray, and I'm not 100% clear on whether external USB Blu Ray drives will always be able to run any Blu Ray movie (because of goofy DRM issues).

I've heard (from these forums)that Dell is dropping the XPS line and instead creating a Studio XPS line which is like a better version of the studio... I guess? I'm hoping they keep their XPS line but is there an article that tells about this?

Hopefully all it means is something that would have been called "XPS" gets called "Studio XPS" or whatever.

I reaaaaally want a successor to the 1730. That thing's near flawless. Just bump up the CPU and chipset, bump the CPUs to 9800 series, tear out the physics chip, and throw an LED backlit screen on there (hopefully with multiple available resolutions). Or just throw an LED light on the current 1730 and I'll bite...

(Sorry, I keep repeating myself again and again but it's sooo frustrating!)

That article they just talk about more VOSTROS. Ugh.

I hope the Studio XPS keeps the good options like 128gb ssd or the 256 gpu and led screen. The only thing I think the regular current studio line has over the current xps is the backlit keyboard which is nice but not all that important.

The Vostros just got updated in the spring. They don't need updated anymore. I think the Studio XPS will be just like the current XPS line, midrange notebooks with decent options. Anything high end will be reserved for the Alienware line.

I've yet to hear anything good about Alienware's stuff, and I've yet to really hear anything BAD about the 1730 (which was out half a year earlier than the identically speced Alienware equivalent!)

I don't want Alienware, I don't trust them, I don't like their options, I don't like their prices, and I hate how they look (although I'm a very function over form type of guy so that's the very last thing I consider).

I finally got sick of waiting, and pushed the button on a fully loaded XPS M1330 this morning...

At least I got a 5% discount and other upgrades on XPS Premium Warrenty support...but I do wonder how I will feel if it's delivered on the 8th Sept and on the 15th the new ones are released !

I also managed to the the 320 GB Free Fall Sensor (7200RPM) Hard Drive which isn't even available on the UK/EU websites...

I think I will love it for a year, then in Q4 2009, upgrade to the latest and greatest...

Let's hope it doesn't catch fire - although some would say that's what the 3 years warrenty, 3 years xps premium support and 3 years accidental damage cover are for ;)

If you can swing doing another one in a year, I wouldn't worry too much. By then we'll for sure either have i7, or all be waiting with baited breath for it :D No question it'll be fine for a year assuming it's okay for you right now.

At this point, I think this is a very logical choice to make. Centrino 2 is not a large improvement over the previous technology. Whereas when Capella comes out there should be a significant increase in performance. The big obstacle for most is waiting for a GPU that hopefully does not have flaws along with a few subtle changes such as backlit keyboards, eSATA, gigabit ethernet, or if you are Wolfpup LED screens for the M1730 :p

Yeah they are slight nuisances. The backlit keyboard is pure cosmetic, though nice in the dark. The eSATA and gigabit are functional hindrances though. I back my computers up to my home server and having a gigabit port really helps when you need to move a large amount of data quickly. Same with eSATA, it would be nice to have a speedy connection to an external drive.

That is not true. When it comes to systems with integrated graphics, montevina brings significant enough improvements.
Not to mention, decreased power consumption, and increased FSB for both the RAM and CPU, gigabit ethernet, just to mention a few.

Those are just generation to generation performance increases that should be seen. The step up to the Capella platform is where you are really going to see significant, noticeable improvements.

I'm having the same type of argument with some guy on some Apple boards. Penryn was a bigger update early this year than this is, and that was almost a non event.

But darn it Dell, hurry it up and at least announce something! They've got the Studio 17 on sale AGAIN, and it's sort of a better price this time. REALLY tempting, except now they're no longer offering the external X-Fi card I want to order with it. D-O-H.
