The weight difference is negligible. A few ounces at most. The 9 cell battery does stick out underneath the laptop by about half an inch.

As for battery life, I have both a 6 cell and 9 cell. On the 6 cell, I can get up to around 3 hours on a full charge. On the 9 cell I get 5:30 to 6 hours.

I just put the laptop in my Swiss Gear backpack. The laptop compartment is large enough to accommodate the 9 cell battery.

I haven't had any issues with carrying the laptop around. It is a little bit more bulky than my last top because of the little extra space needed for the battery but I'd much rather have the longer battery life. :D

Well, it depends on what you want from a notebook.....

That's kind of like saying "I'm thinking of buying a car, is the Ford Focus worth getting?" ;)

    yes

    and

    no

Try filling out the FAQ in the what notebook should I buy forum, and mention that you're interested in the Studio 15. The answer you've given just doesn't tell us enough about your usage for us to give you a sensible answer. Odds are that it will be fine, but it depends on your "light gaming", also where you plan on using the notebook etc. Many things to consider require slightly more full responses than you've given. Fill out the FAQ in that forum and see what people say.

I'll try to find your post in that forum either later or tomorrow to answer your question (or join in with other peoples answers). It's just better that you give as much info as possible so we don't give you an answer that is misleading or completely incorrect. Otherwise, we could all work in a computing retail store, just trying to sell you anything that will get us that bit closer to our sales targets :)

    hi friends,

good news: the dell bt mouse started works again. i de-assemble the mouse and clean the circuit board etc. with clean cloth. and bingo :D

bad news: i tried to boot from a hitachi 80gb usb hdd, and i got this error.....

memory read/write failer at xxxxxxxx, read xxxxxxxx expecting xxxxxxxx
to resolve this issue/problem, try to reseat the memory.
    decreasing available memory.

i put xx, cause i forgot the mem address. i cant access the BIOS even. i open the back case, try to interchange the ram within two ram clots/dimms. got the same error again. i try to chk with a single ram (2gb) and i got the same error again, realized that the dimm1 ram is giving the error, may be its got faulty/damaged. currenty working with 2gb ram only :(

i really dont know why this happened and if the usb hdd is the cause of this error. the usb cable is not works properly sometime. but then wats the reason of this ram damage. never seen before :(

now i am very afraid of putting the usb hdd again. and i am out of dell warranty.
can u plz explain wats went wrong ??? and also if i buy a 2gb ram wat type of ram i should buy so that its works well with my box.

Huh, just realized that I can get a whole bunch of Microsoft software for free through MSDNAA, including two copies of Win7 Professional (1 32-bit and 1 64-bit). Dell will be sending me a copy of Home Premium 64 bit. Should i upgrade to professional, even though I will have to wipe the whole computer to do so (you cant do in-place upgrades with different versions) or should I just use Home Premium?

Also, what else should I get from MSDNAA? I plan on getting the most out of this, at least until the cost of the free software is greater than my tuition cost :D

Honestly, I recommend a full clean install over an in-place upgrade no matter what circumstances, so in your case I would opt for Professional. I'm using Home Premium right now, though, and there's really nothing I can think of that I lack that I would get from having Professional.

    Hi,

I'm planning on buying the dell studio 15 with intel i7 core. Is there any owner of that laptop with the i7 processor?

My main issue is the battery life with this processor and will it perform that much better vs a core 2 T9600.

Also i just red the studio 1555 review and the only thing that hold me from buying it is the build quality. How good is it?

I'm not sure about getting the 6 or the 9 cells battery. Is the 6 cells battery life acceptable? will the 9 cells make the laptop really more heavy?

Finally, what could be the other notebook alternatives for the dell studio 15 with i7?

    Thank you!

    I have just ordered a studio 1555...........
i landed on this site shortly after and i did some reading around (very helpful posts) and i have a few questions about my laptop-

1)I have ordered it in black chainlink but i saw some close up shots of it and frankly, i didnt like it at all. So, is it possible to change the colour of my laptop once i get it to say midnight blue? If yes, then how?

2)Is the intel c2d t6600 underpowered for gaming (i mainly play games like cs source and COD4)???

3)Ive got mine with a 64 bit os. does this mean that i cannot play the games that i mentioned? Also, are these games compatible with win7?

4)Im getting it sent brought over from the states with a relative of mine (didnt buy it here as the same config on dell usa and india differed by a good $100  after discounts in dell us) so is there some warranty issues i might have to face if something happens to it here?

I hope i have posted it in the right section(this is my first post)!
any help would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Not sure; technically you could try to source a new palm rest, either via eBay or Dell (or parts-people or any number of other places). Alternatively you could disassemble the notebook and re-spray it yourself. This second option is much nicer in my opinion, but be prepared to be without your notebook for a month, as doing this properly takes time to let coats of paint & the finishing coat to dry.

    2. The CPU is less of a concern in gaming than the GPU. Your machine should be able to play both of those games, though CoD4 will have to have some settings lowered. This is not the fault of your CPU, but your GPU. It will still be very playable though.

    3. It shouldn't impact you playing those games.

    4. You should complete the global ownership transfer form at the Dell site. Dell may try to apply an additional charge for a new warranty within your chosen country.

thanks for the fast reply. rep added.
i looked through the dell site to look for parts like "studio 15 cover", "studio 15 colour tops" etc. but no luck. apparently u can but e different colour lid for the inspiron 1545 after sale but not for the stubio!!!! :(

also, i went to the dell international ownership form, but in the drop down list in which u specify your product line, there was not a 'studio' option!
there were all other ranges like inspiron etc., but no studio!!!!
is it possible that dell does not allow transfer of a studio!????

Or is there some other reason behind it?

Thanks, but until you've got 5 posts, rep doesn't add lol ;) Besides, I do this for the love, not the rep :)

I expect you'd have to call or email their part sales team. It is possible that they simply wont sell you the parts though - eBay may be your best bet.

That is odd. To be fair it doesn't even have Inspiron notebook or anything either - it simply states Inspiron, which probably means their desktop computers rather than their notebooks.

I'd speak to someone on their livechat, or give them a call. It probably doesn't massively matter what you put, seeing that you have to put your service tag in before that part anyway, but double check with Dell directly would be my advice.

My Studio 1555's 6 cell gets around 2:30 battery life on a full charge, the 9 cell gets me about 5:30.

The Core i7 will blow away any T-series dual core in just about anything.

Build quality on my 1555 is nice and sturdy. The 9 cell does not make the laptop any heavier than the 6 cell, maybe an ounce or two at most.
Dell doesn't sell lids, but look around eBay, parts-people.com and resaleremarketing.net for lids.

That CPU will be plenty for most games. CS:S and CoD4 will both run just fine on Windows 7 64 bit. For the record, 32 bit software still runs natively on 64 bit systems.

Not sure about the warranty transfer, but as Fragile says, try simply talking to a Dell representative.

Enjoy your awesome new laptop. ;)

I was planning on buying the studio 15 with i7 but should i consider the studio XPS 16 with i7 that comes with a Ati 4670 1GB? Will the gpu be that much better than the 4570 that it will compensate for the 1lbs heavier? Also the build quality seems to be better on the XPS.

Finally, what are the difference between this screen : 15.6” Full High Definition (1080p) High Brightness LED Display with TrueLife™ (in studio 15) and this screen : HD+ Widescreen 15.6 inch WLED LCD (1680x945) (in XPS 16)

Thank you very much for your help!!!

It depends on how much portability you really need. If you're going to be taking this to every class with you every day with a pile of books in your bag, the Studio XPS 16 may be a bit too heavy. The ATi 4670 GPU will be more powerful than the Studio 15's 4570, but to be fair I've found the 4570 to be a perfectly capable card, playing TF2, Left 4 Dead, CoD4, Oblivion and Fallout 3 quite comfortably.

The differences between those two displays are in the resolution. The Studio 15's 1080p display has a resolution of 1920x1080, the Studio XPS 16's, as mentioned, is 1680x945. The 1080p will allow you to fit a bit more on the screen at once, and everything will be slightly smaller to compensate.

    Thank you for your help!

    Thank u fragillex and mastershroom.
So, i looked around i bit more and saw an actual studio 1555 at the local dell store and it turns out that that the black isnt that bad! so ive decided to stick with it.

As for the warranty issue, the dell guy said that
this form states that the field 'product type' is not a required field and so the transfer should take place without it!!! :)
    Heres the form-

Thought as much, but in these situations it is sometimes better to check. Dell reps sometimes don't know much about the technology in the notebooks, but they tend to be pretty knowledgeable about warranties etc.

Make sure you confirm whether there would be any additional payments required - I've heard of Dell India requesting that you buy a warranty from them once you've transferred to a new country.

Ill talk to someone at dell india as soon i get back home....
    i have another question...
the intel 2d is centrino2 right????
i mean it is not centrino 1....

I read the comparison b/w the two and it turns out that 2 is much better than 1.

    Questions about laptop.

    DELL Studio 1555, 15.6" LED Backlight (1366x768) TFT, Core™2 Duo Mobile T6500 2.1GHz/800MHz, PM45 Express, DVD±RW, LAN, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, ATI Mob HD4570 512MB, RAM 4GB DDRII 800, HDD 500GB.

Is dell 1555 having problems with backlight LED screen with empty pixels?
Is tft True bright better screen?
