I heard the 1.3MP camera includes a digital microphone. I don't know if that is used instead of the microphone you mentioned or it has 2 microphones when configured with the 1.3MP camera.
-
That is probably the one that is built in then. I figured they would all have it. I do have the 1.3mp version though. Actually I got the banged out version lol
Im on it now. Man the battery life is phenominal on this machine. I love it!!! -

Could anyone suggest the cheapest external CD drive I can get that would work with the mini? I just need one to install and re-install software.
-
Has anyone been successful at booting off an SD card? I have been able to boot off a USB drive, but not an SD card. I have even taken the same files that were on my bootable USB drive and copied them to the SD card and nothing.
When the Mini boots up, you can press 0 for boot options. It looks to me that, if the device is seen as a bootable device, there is a + sign next to it. I have been unsuccessful in getting an SD card to show a + sign. -
$50 on clearance most places if you can still find one.
Won't play HD-DVD's but works fine for everything else.
Of course it's HUGE... -
good idea! I wondered if those worked as just regular drives on a pc...
I've seen them as low as $39 at Fry's in Texas. -
I found another program to remap keys besides the aforementioned KeyTweak. It's all a little more polished looking than KeyTweak, but works just the same. It's called SharpKeys and it allowed me remap my F10 to F11. However, you can only remap keys the Mini already has. For example, you can't make Fn+Z the F11 key. I also swapped the / key and the + sign.

Dell are finally selling an Ubuntu version of the Mini in the UK.*
Price is £269 but it only has the 8gig, possibly slower, SSD, so a 30 quid price reduction doesn't seem enough to me.
I hope all of you who are having problems with your orders, get them resolved soon.
* Technically, of course, you can always delete XP (and any other software you don't want), post the discs back to Dell and get your money back for the unused software, but that's too much hassle for most people. I wonder if you'd get more than £30 back tho'. -
I just converted my XP Home to XP Pro without reinstalling. It only takes about 5 minutes. I followed the directions from the following guides:
Convert XP Home to Pro Without Reinstalling
Enabling Remote Desktop in XP Home
Also, one of the links in the first article appears to be broken, but the script enable_txsp.bat can be found HERE
The remote tab is missing from the XP Pro screenshot. But I can confirm that RDP into my Dell Mini works. I was even able to change the port from 3389 to 3392 in the registry.Attached Files:

Rep Power: 4 With the Dell Mini 9
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How do you reset it to the Original factory settings?
I could do it with Vista and F keys but unsure how with this
machine and smaller keyboard.
Thank you for any help.

I have setup my Mini to connect to the internet via Bluetooth with my Blackberry Curve. The following instructions should work for most phones with Bluetooth. Also, your Mini must have Bluetooth. I can now access the internet anywhere I have cell phone service.
Set up Internet APN.
1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel.
2. Double-click Phone and Modem Options.
3. In the Phone and Modem Options window, click the Modems tab.
4. Select Standard Modem and click Properties.
5. In the Standard Modem Properties window, Click the Advanced Tab.
6. In the Extra initialization commands field, type the following: +cgdcont=1,"IP","<your Internet APN>"
(remove<>when typing in your APN)
Example; +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"
Note: If you do not know your Internet APN, or if you do not have an Internet APN, contact your service provider.
I have listed some Wireless Carriers and their APNs at the end of this post.
7. Click OK.
8. In the Phone and Modem Options window, click OK.
ATT/Cingular Settings
APN: wap.cingular
user name for APN: [email protected]
Password: CINGULAR1
This is how I found my settings on my BB Curve - Options>Advanced Options>TCP. The APN will say, for example, wap.cingular
Step 3
To configure dial-up networking, complete the procedure that corresponds with the operating system you are using.
Windows XP Operating System
1. Go to Start > Settings > Network Connections.
2. Double-click New Connection Wizard. The New Connection Wizard opens.
3. Click Next.
4. Select the Connect to the Internet option. Click Next.
5. Select Setup my connection manually. Click Next.
6. Select Connect using a dial-up modem. Click Next.
7. If the Select a Device screen appears, select the Modem - Standard Modem check box. Click Next.
8. In the ISP Name field, type a name for your connection. Click Next.
9. In the Phone number field, type *99#. Click Next.
10. Indicate which users will have access to the connection. Click Next.
11. Enter the user name and password provided by your service provider. Click Next.
12. Click Finish.
13. In the Connect window, click Properties.
14. In the Properties window, verify that Modem - Standard Modem appears beneath the Connect using heading, then click Configure.
15. In the Modem Configuration window, clear the Enable hardware flow control check box and make sure none of the other check boxes are selected. Click OK.
16. In the Properties window, click OK.

So sucks I'm sending mine back.. unles somebody wants buy it. -

Has anyone received their Mini 9 with Ubuntu yet?

Glad I could be of assistance with the 360 drive suggestion.

What are the changes between the A00 and A01 BIOS?
-
So far with the new BIOS, I have tested the icons auto arranging on boot and the ability to boot from an SD card. Neither have been fixed in this update. Not sure what's new if anyone can find a difference or improvement please post your results.

Well ordered 9/16, ESD 10/3
was delivered today, cool little machine -
On the hooking your dell up to the bluetooth on your curve, Does anyone charge extra for that? I have a curve also and bluetooth on the mini!
-
I know AT&T has an unlimited data plan for use with your cell phone, but if they find out you are using it with your laptop (since it uses a lot more data faster) they will cancel your data plan or charge you extra. The "unlimited" data plan that is meant for tethering (connecting through the phone) has a soft-cap of 5GB.
-
-
I used to have the pda plan on my blackjack, with no tethering, and would tether it to my 1505 to surf. I didn't use that much data so it didn't raise any eyebrows. My friend at work did the same thing, and was constantly streaming video and stuff to his Q1, and said he came close to 10gig one month. He said they didn't like that too much.
-
Just got off the phone with Dell and they have replaced my lost/stolen order with a new "expedited" order that should put a mini in my hands next week. I'll post an update if that actually happens.
-
-
Jeff -
I'm happy they are expediting the order for you...that was the least they could do..

Guys, you have already be warned by another member not to continue any OSX on PC discussion. It is against the Apple EULA which means that it is illegal. And any discussion about illegal activities will not be tolerated here on NBR as it is clearly stated in the forum rules. Anymore discussion of and along the lines of this topic will result in infraction points and thread closure.
Thank you very much for your cooperation.

I must say that I am surprised that even discussing this is 'illegal' and prohibited. It is interesting news and I know I read about it on Engadget. I can understand physically commiting the heinous crime is illegal, but news about it? If this is the case, the discussion about tethering with your blackberry may be illegal too as AT&T prohibits this use specifically. And what about talk about using the Dell EPP when you are not specifically qualified to do so? Why the over the top reaction? Has Apple come down on these forums for discussions? Is there a difference about talking about doing this and actually doing it? I'm more interested in the why then anything as the reaction by the mods was rather harsh...just curious... -

It is merely against the rules to talk about illegal things on this forum...
I didn't mean to imply that Apple had their own talking police. >.< hahaha -
Looks like no more webcam option on the mini 9.

You can check all the orders that are currently in your name by clicking on the Dell Purchase ID # the status page for a known order. Then you click on "View My Orders" on the page that comes up. A page will show all the orders in your name, including ones that have been cancelled.
