I wonder how much it costs to get a Mini painted.... Or how easy/difficult it would be to DIY?

If you can get a Studio with a Mike Ming design how about Banksy for the  est Mini around :D

That's what Fujitsu Siemens are offering on their netbook. It's spec is exactly the same as most of the HD netbooks so the swappable covers is their USP.

Orange may be a long shot. They will probably only come out with red, black, white, and maybe a blue. The red maybe the (red) product thing.

I think the colors would be along the lines of what Lenovo offers with their S10, just the basic that will sell well. Hopefully unlike Lenovo it takes less than two months to ship!

    Hi All,

Just for some encouragement for other Inspiron Mini 9 buyers waiting for their orders.. I ordered mine on 9/18 and received it on 10/3 (ESD 10/6 and arrival date date much later)...

First impressions are that is is a great solid machine... I have to say that the build quality far exceeds the asus and acer netbook offerings.. The dell just looks more expensive than it is...

The machine came with a lot of bloatware so formated drive and installed new version of xp... the machine is using 'compressed' drive so when installing a new copy of xp with 'uncompressed' drive the OS is more responsive...

the 16gb SSD driver performs at 20Mb/sec write and 80Mb/sec read... not to bad actually...

I'm sure we will see the Red...that is what the I9 was first featured with..and it's a staple color for the Dell's, also!

And, as for the Tangerine Orange...You just never know with Dell..maybe or maybe not!

Yeps..think so too...hoping it doesnt take that long to ship either. ;) :)

Congrat's George! I'm really glad you are enjoying it! :) :)
Ahead of the ESD is good also. :)

Yes, I know a gal who works in dell and she said red was coming out but she wasn't sure if it was going to be in the mini 9 or 10 or 12 or all.
But I would love a red of one and maybe a pink to add to my white mini 9
blue xps1330, black 1220 and desktop.
    Yup I'm a freak!! lol

I personally like to have all my machines black, just so everything coordinates. I doubt they come with a pink one that color is too specific for something like the mini. IF they had black with like pink trim, I could def rock something like that.

Hey! I hope that they are legit', as they were floating around on Engadget back in June(ish)! And, the *red* was the main featured color....

Here's one of the articles back from 5/29/08:

    http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/29/dells-mini-inspiron-eee-pc-killer-revealed/

I'm hoping these remaining colors outside of the already Black & White will be released...and soon! :) :)

I finally have a new order number with an ESD of 10-10-2008. I'm keeping my fingers crossed this time. I did hear that Mercury is in retrograde right now and that there are often problems with all sorts of things when this happens. Maybe that's the source of all the problems I've been having with getting my mini. :)

My order was delayed, yet again. Order placed on 9/12 and updated estimated ship date of 10/13. That's unacceptable. I've order MANY things from Dell in the past and have never had so many problems. I called customer service, and it was like they WANTED me to cancel my order...so I did. The funny thing is, usually, when you want to cancel, they try to talk you out of it or want a reason why (so they can offer some small incentive not to), but this time, they processed the cancellation and quikly hung up.

Not sure if I'll ever deal with Dell again after this fiasco. They don't provide ANY useful information over the phone. I asked why my order kept getting delayed, and they kept telling me that it was because of heavy order volume. I then asked why people who placed their orders AFTER me were already getting theirs, and they couldn't answer. I asked if they, for some reason were doing FILO instead of FIFO and they said that it wasn't due to any bugs in the system and kept mentioning "heavy order volume". They said that there was nothing they could do. Well, gee...thanks.

Hey..that's really not good... :( Sorry, to hear that they did this..

And, yes you would think that they would try and save *you* as a customer to keep the order!

Sometimes, you can understand Dell's logic..most not.. :(

After you let this all *settle down*....What do you think you may do?

There are other Netbooks out there, and most are shipping right now. I recently found out that the Lenovo S10 is shipping in certain colors. ;)

Good luck to you...please keep us posted as to your next step! ;)

I feel your pain. This is my second order as the first one was conveniently "stolen" while being shipped to me. Of course, I don't blame Dell for that as the computer was in DHL's hands at the time, but still...

As far as the helpfulness of Dell's customer service, I agree with you. I'm sure I would rather have my wisdom teeth removed by Billy Joe Bob with a rusty pair of pliers than to have to deal with Dell's customer support. They seem to be going out of their way to make the whole process as painful as possible. It'll definitely be a long time before I purchase another Dell product. That's assuming I actually get this one. If they can't deliver this one, I'll be canceling my order as well. I don't think I can survive another round of dealing with them.

the crappy thing is...I have a $250 gift card for Dell (got through my AMEX card to use for this purchase) that's only good for systems and TVs. Oh well, hopefully, I can sell that card or get a refund from AMEX for it.

You can probably just order the S10 with your real credit card and then sell the Dell when it eventually arrives.

Well, it looks like they'll reimburse the amount back to the gift card. AMEX won't allow me to return it, so it looks like I'll probably be selling the card (perhaps I can get $200 for $250 off?). I went ahead and bought an ASUS 1000H on ebay for around $500. With the live.com discount, it's going to end up being around $350. Althought I like the sound of the mini 9 (especially the no fan part), I will likely be just as happy, if not more so with the 1000H. I'll probably appreciate the bigger keyboard and battery.

I was really looking forward to getting the mini 9 though. :(

That's nice that they will *reimburse* you! I would think you would be able to get a decent amount when/if you sell the card! :) I would try at $200, for sure! :D

I hope that the Asus works for you... ;) I know you really wanted the I9..but look you actually found something, and it will be shipped to you alot sooner than what you had been going thru with the I9... :)

Now, that's a good thing, right??

Definitely a good thing. Patience is definitely not one of my virtues. After it's all said and done I will be paying about $350 for the 1000h, instead of the $240 (after the $250 gift card) that I paid for the fully decked out I9, but if I can get $200 for the gift card, I'll have actually paid significantly less. Every review I've read of the 1000h seems to be positive, sighting the major drawback as the price...but I think I got a pretty good deal. :)

That's a great deal on Asus, either way! You should be able to get at least $200 for the GC!

    When does it ship???

Hum - If it is Mini PCI - could we also use this on other Dell laptops that have mini-pci ?

As an alternative, if you have a Microcenter nearby 32GB USB flash drives are only $79.99. I plan on striping the casing and soldering mine internally to the unused pci-e slot, as long as I can find a 5V point on the motherboard. That is, of course, if I ever get the thing....

I would replaced the SSD, but I'm paranoid about read/write speeds. I'm pretty sure the 16gb reads at 80, the drive above reads at 40. I know the thumb drive option is slow as well, but at least I have my boot partition on the faster memory. Because of that, it's almost better just to get a big flash drive, I just don't want it sticking out, hence the internal idea.

I use windows at work for some VMWare Admin tasks, so Windows will be my choice. I've thought about dual booting with the extra space!!

Tomorrow when I get the device I'll likely just do a system restore fromt he windows disks that were included with the Mini 9.

If, your talking about the I12 (Inspiron 12) there has been *rumored* talk that it's gonna release this month....But Tesco's site reported availabilty, on 10/6/08...and nothing was released!

That's exactly what I meant. I found your thread soon after I posted that. I hope it comes out soon!

Yah, I will... ESD is 11/6, but I'm not doing anything for at least a couple weeks to make sure I'm happy with the unit and it's not defective. I'm really excited to get it and start mucking with it, but I guess I'll just have to wait like everyone else.

The only thing that I have a hard time believing is that at this very hour, the I910 is on the front page on the dell website. You'd think they know they are having problems getting these things out the door and maybe not push them so hard, but I guess not.
