Ya I ordered one as soon as I got the email about them. Got it in black, with all the upgrades. Was very excited about free overnight shipping and EDD was 9/23... then I came back here and reading some of the posts made me realize I should wait to see if any other colors come out, if we get any larger HDs, coupons, etc.
So I canceled my order yesterday.CSR said it may be too late, it may still get shipped out and to simply send it back for a refund if this happens... but seriously, if that thing ends up at my front door I doubt I could resist the temptation. I'd HAVE to open it up and play, then I'm sure you wouldn't be able to pry the tiny gorgeous thing from my hands!
We'll see what happens! Luckily I'm really in no hurry, my current baby (Ruby Red 1420) is barely a year old.

do u think this thing can run win vista basic at most
-
I ordered mine on September 5th with all the bluetooth and the 1.3MP camera with 1GB of RAM and 16GB mini-PCI-e SSD. Ship date is 09/22 but the sales person that I talked to said that it may be shipped on 09/11. I got free overnight shipping.
I'll be upgrading to 2GB of DDR 800 RAM after I get it and using it with a 16GB SDHC card for music and one or 2 movies.
Can't wait to get it!
-
Great! Let us know when you get it and how you like it. Did you get that with Windows or Ubuntu?
-
Something I never even thought of!!
The only real concern I have with the Dell is the heat. I like that it has an Intel GMA950 because my 1405 has that now, so I will be able to know what it can and can't run. I just hope it's got enough power to run sites like Hulu.com full screen. -
Congrat's
WoOT! If shipped 9/11 ~ that's tomorrow ~ and overnight..so maybe you will have it Friday!
Are you checking your order online, and via automated???
Cin! -
I was able to get a nice quote today (nice getting a state employee discount). He tried to take $50 off but the system didn't let him so he gave me free 2 day shipping instead.
One thing in the quote though.
1 16GB Solid State Drive (mini-card Module/PATA)
I thought the drive was a SATA? -
I got it with Windows.
Thanks! I'm checking it online, it states that it is still in production. I ordered it over the phone and I was given a shipping date of 09/11 when I ordered it. I asked about the 09/22 ship date and the sales rep told me that they expect to have it shipped by 09//11. So I guess I'll wait and see when it gets shipped.
Nope, not a SATA.
"However, instead of a hard disk, Dell chose a solid state drive – specifically the UM-SSD (Ultra Mobile Solid State Drive) supplied by OEM company STEC and built into a PCI Express Mini Card format with a PATA interface and inbuilt controller. STEC claims the UM-SSD reads up to 85MB/s and writes at up to 25MB/s."

I plan on getting another 16GB or 32GB SSD for the open pci slot later one and see it if/how it works. I doubt it will be as cheap as a 16GB SDHC though.
This one looks like it may fit...
http://conics.net/catalog/product_info.php?currency=USD&products_id=310 -
Ok thanks for that info. I doubt it matters between the two right?
-
My Est. ship date is 9/22 too. I talked to a Dell Chat tech and they said the ship date is still 9/22
Hope it ships out tomorrow though, that'd be great. -
Fortunately patience is one of my virtues... I can handle the 23rd.
I usually just "order and forget", then come home one day to a surprise on my front door step. -
Sounds like we ordered the exact same system and have the same ship date/shipping. I imagine a lot of people are ordering theirs fully loaded, I wonder if Dell will just build a bunch of this config in anticipation.
I just checked and my status is still "In Production" Would be a nice surprise to come home Friday and find it waiting for me. -
How is this for the RAM upgrade:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134317
Should I go with a higher speed just in case a BIOS update enables it?

On this type of system and they way it will be used, I don't think a speed increase in RAM (even if enabled in future updates) would be noticeable.
On the other hand, RAM is super cheap so if it costs a couple bucks more... why not! -
Good point.
-
I'll be going with this one.
Kingston 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Laptop Memory - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134587
The BIOS supports 2GB of RAM in Windows XP.
Page 40 of the Dell 910 Setup Manual states that the Dell Mini 9 or Dell 910 takes 533, 677 or 800Mhz of DDR2 RAM.
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins910/en/sg/M770HA00MR.pdf
Laptop MAG added a 2GB stick of PC5300 (677MHz) RAM.
http://www.laptopmag.com/advice/how-to/dell-mini-ram.aspx -
I ordered the Kingston 800.
-
Congrat's you guy's ~ it looks like the wait time for shipping, really isn't that long..then you will have your I9 in your hands and, *owning it* LOL...
I wish they would release it in *red* *sigh*
But, as Halon X stated:
And, I always try to practice *random acts of patience* lol...and will continue!!

I found an interesting post!
Fast SSD and 3G slot ready to upgrade right? Wrong!
It looks like the 16GB models are using STEC's SSD module and 4GB/8GB version use Intels SSD.
http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2008/09/dell-inspiron-mini-9-more-about-3g-and.html -
The article talks about how these specs aren't great for "power users". This laptop isn't meant to be used by "power users". What are you going to be running on it, CAD? Crysis? 78/14 Read/Write speed on my 16GB sounds great for me surfing the internet and taking notes in class (with the occasional game of Half Life if I can get it to work).
Power users looking for a 10" laptop are buying HP EliteBooks and Sony TZ laptops that cost 2,800+. -
How would that affect video playback though?
-
I don't see it being an issue. How much video are you going to put on 16 gigs anyways? I already ordered a 16gb sdhc to house my media.
-
Nothing crazy, most of it will be streaming video.
-
I don't see hard drive read/write speed limiting your streaming unless it was painfully slow. 78/14 Read/write is much faster than your internet connections download speed.
-
I was a little upset about not having a slot for the 3G card because I was planning to put another SSD in that slot. Oh well!
You can fit 3 movies on a 16GB SDHC assuming they are 4.35 GB each. I just want one. I'm going to transfer a movie to the SSD as soon as I get it and see how it plays. I have 14 days to return it if I don't like it... so we'll see how it goes.
I figured Windows XP with Word/Excel/PPT will be about 5GB, I have 2GB in pictures and 4 GB in files. -
Good points. Exactly my point too. These machines are really only meant to be used for surfing the net, checking email and youtube standard videos...
If you look at the youtube video that JKK has put up with comparing the SLC and MLC ssd drives there are noticable differences... for example, just opening the My Computer takes forever on a MLC drive... but tasks like web browsing seem acceptable... -
George, you have a link to that video?
-
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
My EEE 901 can run Vista Home Premium (tried it), so this definitely can run Basic. -
Also, take into consideration the Asus 901 uses a faster primary (4gb) and secondary (8gb or 16gb linux version) SSD drive...
-
How are you guys getting free overnight shipping and stuff? I'm having a difficult time finding any coupons whatsoever for it. You guys also mentioned $55 off? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
-
Hey there!
I don't know very much about the coupon, so I will let the other's that ordered help you on that.
Just because free overnight shipping isn't offered, doesn't mean you can't get it!
Sometimes, if you ask for the upgrade...in a nice way, and depending on the rep *you could just get it*...It's all in *how to get the best deal* when ordering.
I have linked Les's awesome guide on
A How-To on Making The Best Computer Deal
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=153497
Hope that helps,
Cin
-
The $55 off may be in reference to the "Instant Savings" Dell has listed on it's Featured Systems. (Although today I see it's actually $65 savings on the model with the most upgrades)
As far as the free overnight shipping, IDK exactly how I got that, I ordered mine through the website and at checkout, when it came time to choose my shipping method, all options showed up at no cost, so I jumped on "overnight"!!
So, no magical coupons, no codes to enter, no sweet talking sales reps, just luck I guess! -
On this type of system and they way it will be used, I don't think a speed increase in RAM (even if enabled in future updates) would be noticeable.
On the other hand, RAM is super cheap so if it costs a couple bucks more... why not! -
The $55 off isn't really a coupon, it is just money off the original price, "instant savings" as Dell calls it. If you plan on upgrading your own RAM, you can get a fully loaded system with bluetooth, 1.3MP webcam, XP and 512MB of RAM for $10 cheaper than the $1GB. I was told that this it ends up being just $10 cheaper because the "instant savings" doesn't apply when you do a custom config with 512MB RAM instead of 1GB RAM.
When you configure it, it'll give you shipping options with next day shipping or the 3-5 day shipping and both of them will be $0. I placed my order over the phone and the sales rep confirmed that the next day shipping was free. -
Morning! Hey your order is estimated to ship today right??
I hope it does...then you could have it tomorrow if next day shipping!
Cin
-
I ordered mine this morning, and also got free overnight.
-
Sweet! What's your ESD???? What color do you go with?
Now you guy's are giving me the *itch* again!
Cin
-
ESD is the 26th but I don't think it'll take that long. Also my decision to buy was made easier by my co-worker purchasing the Asus 1000H. This way I can do a direct comparison.
-
Nope,...your right the ESD is always over-projected anyways..I bet you get it sooner
You should post the results of your comparison once you receive the I9!
Congrat's on order BTW
Cin
-
Uh oh, Cin is giving into Mini Peer Pressure!
-
I think I may just be..
..wait..no I can hold off, surely I can!!!!
What about you!!!!
Are you giving in????
Cin
-
You've already waited months and months whats another few?!
-
Well I just got my Studio 15, so I think I'll put off buying another notebook for now.
-
Yes, that's true...but hmm I thought I read somewhere...that you were giving that to someone, so you could get another lappy you wanted...
Maybe I was reading wrong!!!!...
Happens..
Cin
-
Supposed to... unless the Dell sales rep lied to me when I ordered it. I sent her an e-mail yesterday, haven't heard anything back yet.
This is what I see online:
Order Date: 9/5/2008
Order Status: In Production
Shipping Method: Next Business Day
Est. Ship Date: 9/22/2008
Est. Delivery Date: 9/23/2008
Carrier: Not Shipped
Tracking Number: Not Shipped -
You were probably reading it wrong because that person was misquoting me
-
The Order status looks good, its in production...and that will change soon for you! Maybe e-mail or call her? Or, speak with another rep.
And, I bet you all get the I9's fairly soon...
Cin!
Darn...I hate that when that happens..
Well, I'm sure that person had the best intentions!
Cin. -
Well, at least they are getting these out a lot faster than Lenovo! I think the ESD on those is over 8 weeks now.
-
We have someone who has just received their mini 9...
