I have to say though... I rather pay a little more $$ for a better quality device... The common thread seems to be that the Dell Mini 9 is a pretty nice build in terms of quality...

I've just had mine delivered and i think it's great! I've had an eee pc 900 for a while but the 4gb ssd failed. The dell seems far more responsive and the keyboard is better too. the only downsides i can see are: there is no hdd activity light and file compression was enabled as standard in xp. apart from these very minor things i'm happy!

Thanks! I'll take some pictures and try to prepare a little review. I'm in the UK and it's black, 16gb ssd, 1gb ram (2gb on order!), webcam and xp home.

Another small thing i've noticed is the battery light doesn't come on when i'm charging the battery, but the power cord is great, there is no block, just a slightly over sized plug. Battery life seems good, i'm down to 46% at the moment and it's been on battery for over two hours.

I've been on it for about three hours in total now, uninstalling a lot of the stuff it comes with (google search, toolbar, mcafee etc) and been doing some updates and other bits and bobs. It's barely warm which is a big improvement over the eee 900 which always got hot even with the fan on.

As mentioned before, the keyboard is great. With the eee pc there were some buttons that took some extra pressure to work, but the inspiron seems to have a great keyboard and the keys are slightly larger. It's a bit strange having the function buttons built into the letter keys but i don't think it's a bad thing.

The build quality seems really good. It's all solid. The screen is very good and i like the gloss finish. The viewing angle is good from left to right but it does seem to suffer a little if you tilt the screen too much.

I will report back again soon but I'm very happy!

    Thanks

    Oliver

Glad you like the pictures :)

Another thing I've just noticed is the function keys only go up to F10 as far as I can see, so F11 for full screen browsing could be a bit tricky!

I'll post some more pictures and info tomorrow.

Very nice pictures, thank you! You got yours really quick ~week since launch. Do you think you could take a picture with it on top of a ream of paper or even a single sheet to kind of give a reference.

Thanks for sharing the links! ;) :) Interesting... ;)

Yes, I did! ;) I'd like to see how it works when you are away from home, and out-and-about for you how long the batt, actually lasts :)

Are you going to get a bag, backpack, or messenger bag for it? I saw the ones on Dell's site...Just curious! ;) :)

Can you take a real close-up of the side/rear to show the batt, for me please! ;)

    Thanks!

Any idea how durable these Dells are with the glossy finish?

I normally just throw my laptop/s into my backpack with whatever else might be in there and have the same intentions of doing the same with the mini if it will stand up to the abuse.

With every new laptop, I tell myself I should purchase a sleeve however once the "new car" smell wears off, I know I'll be back to just tossing it in my pack.

Oliver can you tell me what CD's come with it? I was interested to see how they handled the recovery-cd issue... whether they included a bootable USB drive or something.

    Thanks in advance!

While I’m close to getting the Dell Mini 9, the shortage of storage space really has me looking elsewhere specifically at the Acer Aspire One instead...

While I am a big proponent of Solid State technology, the price break just hasn’t caught up with the market yet. The drives Dell is offering just seem too small for me (4/8/16GB), 4GB is a jump drive, even with the 16GB by the time you load XP, MSOffice, a few other programs and some “selected” music…what are you going to have left? I could live with a 32GB drive, but can’t justify the cost to upgrade.

With the Acer Aspire One you can pre-order on Amazon for $399, you get a 160GB HD, 1GB RAM, 6 cell battery, free S/H and no tax for most states. This gets you tons of storage space (downloading 2GBs of photos off my camera won’t be a problem), and a longer life battery.

I had also looked at the MSI Wind with the 10” screen, but it doesn’t offer any increase in resolution, so I would rather have the smaller form factor.

I like Dell’s ease of access for upgrades, the fact I can put in a 2GB stick of RAM, the AC power pack, basically the shortage of storage space is my only big problem at the moment.

Does anyone think Dell will release a version that will take a standard laptop hard drive in the near future?

With my EEE 901 I have a cd that has ghost files of the two ssd's and the drivers.

    Dell looks like it sends:

    Mcaffe cd
    XP cd
    Driver cd
    Microsoft Works cd

I really do not see the small storage as a negative for this type of computer. You can use a USB drive, a NAS box or your primary computer for storage. Or any combination of the above. More space would be nice, but for a netbook I would rather have the speed of SSD.

Just curious... It has been reported that the 16gb Mini 9's are using the STEC SSD drives and the 4/8GB Mini 9's are using the Intel SSD drives... Performance on the STEC drives are meant to be better when compared to the Intel drives...

It would be nice to see a comparison between the two spec'd Mini 9's (8GB vs. 16GB)...

Nice find. They are supposed to come out with at least a 10 inch netbook and the plans this summer included a Dell E Slim which was 12 inches. That was before the name change, not sure what the plans are now.

Dell has been designing some low quality cheap and unreliable machines, yet they charge more with less value for the 910.

How cheap will the Z530 be since the Inspiron 13 is already only $700? It better be less than $500 otherwise there is no point in getting over the Inspiron 13.

With DHL..if you are not there to receive your lappy..they are supposed to leave a pickup tag on your door for you. That's what happened when my 1530 was delivered. I wasn't home, they left a pickup tag....and I went to the DHL depot after work to pick it up! ;) :)

*fingers crossed for yah* ;) :)

Oliverpl - Thanks for the pictures: I've been wondering if the Mini has a proper UK enter key. Sadly it doesn't but I find myself liking this machine more and more. It's so small for a 9" and versatility etc is really good.

It's going to be interesting to see which design features will be carried through to the 12" model.

If Tesco are to believed, the Ubunto (sic) Z530 sells for the same price as the UK I9 which costs $534 full price or $469 with the current money off deal in the US. It should be quite a bit lighter and smaller than the 13" Inspiron but choice is good :)
