Sigh... my laptop has now been in testing phase for a couple of days now. I am worried the same thing is going to happen to me that happened to you guys. I certainly hope not, as I need the laptop sooner rather than later as I need it for college.

My laptop was in testing stage for almost 6 days before going back to kitting and build stage all over again.

Maybe it is a processor issue but I dont see how they can even power it up without it and for it to be in a testing stage. You would think if that were the case it would be stuck in the kitting stage waiting on the back ordered part.

Here are the exact specs on my system if you want to compare. Maybe there are similar items that we have that are back ordered. ? Who know. I just want my laptop. I really need it for my VMware projects this week.

    Order Date: 2/3/2009
    Order Status: In Production

    Est. Ship Date: 2/11/2009
    Est. Delivery Date: 2/16/2009-2/18/2009

Today I called the 800 number and checked on my status. It informed me that I am in 'Testing' phase. The weird thing is...

When I ordered my XPS 1640, I also ordered some peripherals (optical mouse & flash drive). Those items were given a separate order number on the same purchase ID. Those items on the separate order have already been shipped to me (I received them on 2/6). So far this all makes sense, right?

The automated message told me that my order (with the XPS 1640) was in 'Testing'. OK...
But then it went on to tell me that my separate order was still in 'Testing'. Huh?...but I've already RECEIVED it! Hmmm...

My point is...I put ZERO stock in that 800 number, and Dell's status system. I guess all I can really do is just sit here & be patient until I actually receive a tracking number for shipping. Then I can start to get excited about getting my new lappy.

I think the processor (P8600) or the RGB LED screen is the thing that hold us back...not sure though

If you call, the Rep..should be able to specifically tell you what the problem is. I had to do that with my Mini 9. At first, I was told that there was a Production Delay..but when I *pressed* for exact specifics...they finally told me that my keyboard was on delay from the manufacturer.

If Dell would just be forthright, and tell what the delay is the first time, alot of peeps...like yourself and I, might rest a bit easier. :(

This is good thing for you! :D I think it will ship before the 2/13 EST.

2 days in the testing stage, seems like a long time...but really that wasn't such a bad amount of time! ;)

Hey, I am just happy that my order did not go through the "travelling back in time" stages that a couple of people here have gone through. I am hoping I get the order by Wed, or by the latest Thurs.

That would be cool with me. Maybe both of our 16's will be on the same 747. But unfortunately, mine looks like it will be left behind. At this point I have no idea what is holding it up.

Ya, I have never seen the Dell laptop order stages go backward before. I know in my case, the dvd burner was the part that was delayed for me and why my laptop took a long time to go to testing stage.

So they told you it was the dvd player? The rep I talked with said I had no part delays and it would ship in about 3 days. That was last week sometime. Still in the holding pattern ( testing ).

Yeah, going backward after being in testing for 6 days was very weird. At that point I thought it was toast and starting from scratch. But it shot back through the stages up to testing in about 6 hours or so.

Just hoping for the boxing stage soon. They are stretching out the EST ship date of 2/11. It might not make it.

Ya, I called on Wed of last week regarding my order status. The person told me that the only part delaying the order was the dvd drive.

I hope it ships this week for you too. I know you really need this laptop this week just like I do.

By the way, did you expedite your order? The person I talked to on Wednesday said that he would for me, but who knows if he did or not. To anyone who still has not ordered a laptop from Dell, it would prolly be a good idea to tell the rep to place an expedite process right after you order a laptop.

You know, I dont understand how others are having a quick turnaround on their orders and being able to get their orders "expedited" when calling customer service.

I called customer service this morning and waited to speak to someone about the status of my order. All he could offer me was the information I hear when calling the order status number.

He said there were no part delays and it should ship on 2/11 ( 2 days from now ) and it is still in testing stage for the second round!

I asked for my order to be expedited and he said he could not do that.

People on here are reporting their orders being shipped about 6 days after ordering. Mine is still stuck in testing stage.

Is it a rare thing to find somebody in customer service that actually likes to help customers? The people I have talked to just reads something off of the screen. Information I already know and have access to.

I am usually patient when placing orders but I really need this system for my Cisco and Linux classes and using multiple VM's. I needed it days ago.

It would just be nice if Dell would just tell the truth with detail about what is going on with these orders. The reps I have talked with repeat what I see online. That is a waste of a job if that is all they can do. I already have access to that.

Maybe our systems are being used to train the new guys on the assembly line. lol. As long as they have had it I am curious how it will look when I get it.

I get the same response from the reps when I tell them I want an updated order status. However, sometimes they transfer me to someone else who has more information and that is how I found out about the part delay.

For fun I went to the Dell site and built the exact system I ordered on Jan 28, 2009. It says the preliminary ship date is 2/16/2009, one week from today.

It also says the build time for my system is 5 days. If that is true, then why have they had mine for almost two weeks and it has spent about 8 or 9 of those days in testing where it is still.

My system is still under TESTING stage too. I sent an 'unresolved issue' email to customer service over 24 hours ago with no reply except for the automated response.

I would just like to know if my system is going to be delayed. With one day left until the EST ship date, it still has to go through boxing and put on a plane.

Doubtful at this point. Very strange that our systems are lagging behind when others get shipped out after a shorter amount of time.

I just called my rep and she told me that she sent an email to the factory but still no response. I also ask if I cancel this order and place a new one, will the new one ship out faster? she said she doesnt know. Since my order is taking so long...I dont know if it'll turn out to be fine or not. I also don't know if they would ship the system out before the day they promised to ship out or not. I am completely clueless right now and very mad because I order wayyyy before many people here (1/27) and my order is in testing for about 11 days (include the backward stages)....my rep told me that there's no delay or backorder parts and she doesn't know what's going on with the order anyway. Screw her and screw dell

I have lost all faith in Dell especially with customer service. My system is now 10 days in Testing stage.

I wanted to know if I should just cancel this order and start over. After sending an email to customer care over 24 hours ago I have not heard from anybody.

I finally get in contact with someone via phone today and try to find out why my system has been in testing for 10 days! He doesnt know anything.. and I mean anything.

I would have been better off if I got transferred to the maintanence department. This guy could barely speak english let alone know anything more than what I have access to.

I am f*^%%$***# over it with Dell. I have 3 Dell systems here at home and one on the way ( maybe ). I will not be giving them any more of my business.

If they cant get their head out of their $$$ and train their employees then I dont want to speak or deal with them any longer.

I wish we could force Michael Dell to call his own customer service all day and see how he likes it.

    dHell has lost another customer.

    wlfng2005,

What are the chances that our orders didnt get scanned going into "boxing" stage? When I talked with customer service they mentioned that scanning at each stage was done manually. So maybe they got skipped?

Who knows. I do know I will never buy from Dell again after this order. Their customer service is the worst I have ever dealt with.

    cobrakr,

Assume that they skipped that stage...then why isn't the order in "shipped" yet? I doubt that they skip that shipped stage also. I am about to write an email to dell's CEO, Vice, ... to seek help. Doing nothing is not going to help, but doing something gives me hope...good luck with yours

I built the exact model I have already ordered and it says preliminary ship date is 7 days from now. 7 days! Mine has spent almost 11 days in testing alone. I ordered it two weeks ago.

I am so over it that it wont mean much when it does arrive.

I got an email saying my order has been delayed and the ESD is now 2/16. No explanation why. The automated order status says it is still in the boxing stage.

Well, my estimated shipping date was 2/11. The automated service maintained that date all week while I had been calling it. It has been in the 'Boxing' phase for several days now. Today (2/11) I called, and it is no longer giving me an esitimated ship date. I guess that means it won't get shipped today? :(

This has been my only experience buying a Dell on my own (the company I work for only buys us Dells). So I guess after reading about everyone's issues in here, if my experience turns out anywhere near as bad, then I guess I'll be done with Dell too.

I guess I need to give it a day or 2 before I start to get annoyed though.

Called customer care and finally talked with someone that could find out more information on my order. He told me that my order is "delayed" and now has an estimated ship date of 02/18/09 ( one week from today ).

The automated status phone number still says I am in "Testing" stage. This makes 11 days now. I did NOT get any kind of notification by email of a delay and the automated status line is not updated.

He told me there was a huge demand for this system. What is funny is he told me that no orders made after mine would be processed before mine and that mine would have priority over newer orders. That is total BS. Peoople on here have already reported their shipping status and have ordered after me.

Other reps told me there are no part delays but yet they are waiting on parts to put this system together.

Truth and accuracy would be very helpful and maybe something that would help keep Dell customers. It is such a big deal and stressful to call customer service and find someone that can actually give a customer real service.

I will not order from Dell again. Having to jump through hoops just to get some kind of customer service isnt worth it.

If Dell doesnt care about the quality of service they give their customers then I will definitely not give them my hard earned money.

    Ordered On: 1/28/09

    Est. Ship Date: 2/11/2009
    Est. Delivery Date: 2/16/2009-2/18/2009

    Status: 1/29/09 - In Production
    Status: 2/02/09 - Present - In Testing

    Delayed:

    New Est. Ship Date: 02/18/09

I'm wondering did you pay with Dell Financing or another method? Are they giving priority to customers that use their financing?

I too called dell again today, but to cancel my order.

Then the rep (a different one) told me that my order is at the very end of the line and it should ship any time now(according to the factory's email). So I gave him another chance. I also complained about the 13-days-testing-stage, and he told me that the processor was defective so they needed to take it out and put in a new one...He also told me to give him another chance (1-2 more days) to get the system shipped out. I guess I'll wait...

p/s: cobrakr, indeed that your order has priority to the orders after it is a complete BS, they got theirs shipped before us!

Well, the guy I talked to didnt have that detailed information. He only said there was a delay. When I started talking about cancelling my order he said that my order should ship before the new Est. Ship date of 2/18. It is probably BS.

My guess is that since they opened up this system to Best Buy and they started selling it at $999.00 there was a huge amount of orders and it has depleted their supply some.

Either way there were orders made after ours that have already been shipped. And the configuration is still very close so it cant be that tight.

Yeah it sux that we have to wait and be patient but this has really revealed to me their lack of quality in customer service. It is just a BIG turn off.

Checking my status, I see that it has "Changed". There is no apparent reason for this and I have sent messages inquiring into the status change and what it actually means. I purchased mine via the AAFES Military portal (got a good discount) so I have to direct any questions to the Dell AAFES Rep. Initially it was supposed to be shipped tomorrow, however I fear that it will be quite a while before I see it. :(

I was wondering if there is anyone else in Montreal who could share their order and delivery status of their 1640.

My order was placed Feb 2nd with an expected delivery date of Feb 11. It has been in production since February 4th.

I called yesterday and was told the delay was due to a backorder of a part. Isn't that related to pre-production?

Anyway, customer service said it should ship in the next few days and I can expect delivery mid to end of next week. (grrrrrrr)
