The OFFICIAL Studio XPS 1640 Order Status Thread

I just called and also got the vague "Order is currently being processed." They no longer give me any info as to what stage it is in. The only info they give is that it should be delivered "on or before May 4."

 

Hey guys. I just ordered the SXP 1640 on April 14th and my EDD is 5/5. I really hope it doesn't get pushed back. I have always owned Dells and they usually don't take this long, but after reading all your posts my fear is that it really will take that time. I guess a lot of other people realized what a great deal this laptop was. I was down to this one or the Vaio FW and this one was so much less for so much more. I already feel like a kid on Christmas Eve. My old Inspiron is on its last legs .

 

My guess is they were waiting on a bunch of parts from suppliers, so that when the parts come in, they'll be able to get a ton of these orders out in a relatively short period of time.

But like I said, that's just a guess.

By the way: I just noticed if you go to dell and begin to configure a new sxps it says the initial ship date is May 1. Therefore, it looks hopeful for those of us who ordered a couple weeks ago.

I think you are right. I've heard that Dell has cut back on production due to the economy, so things are taking longer. But once they get the parts in it should pick up. Fingers crossed!

Btw, looks like we have the same old laptop. I also have an Inspiron 8600. Good computer, but time for the upgrade.

 

Yep, the I8600 has been a great laptop. I've only had to replace the battery once, and I've upgraded the RAM. Other than that, it is still running well, albeit with graphics that aren't the best. Should see a dramatic improvement with the SXPS!

 

The only thing I've done is upgrade the RAM. The casing also has a tiny crack, but otherwise it is being replaced because I hate that videos stall and my HD is pretty much full (I'm a big iTunes fan and only have about a gig left).

 

i just spoke to the dell rep who was extremely polite and apologetic while he told me nothing of great use to me.
he said the 1640 is in high demand right now and that is why there has been a delay in filling all the orders, but i should rest assured it should arrive on or before may 6th.

so i guess i'll be quietly pulling out my hair for another week.

 

I called the 800 number and it said my laptop was "still being processed", so I guess I still have quite the wait on my hands.

 

I called the 800 number and it said the order was in the testing stage. I guess it is making some progress. Or I could be stuck there for days. You just never know.

 

My order took 3 weeks to arrive.

When I ordered a replacement for my first SXPS16 it only took 8 days from date of order to be delivered. So it all depends on part availability.

Funny thing is that my replacement unit was also faulty and I had to place an order for another one. This time I was not sent an order confirmation email so I cannot track it online.

 

I just randomly checked my status and my order shipped! Should be here Wed. Hope you guys' laptops have shipped too.

Yep, that's the EDD that I got too. You must have been right about them being fast once they got those parts in. I'm pretty sure it was the 500 GB HD b/c I went to "build" another one just to see the EDD and it went up as soon as I put in the HD. Good times!

Ordered mine on 4/3, but the 800 number order status line still says my order is being processed.... :-(

 

Update: Mine left Nashville via Fedex this morning. Dare I hope that it would arrive one day early (Monday)?

 

That's funny. Mine is in Nashville too! They are probably shipment mates.

 

You should really call and see what is up b/c I ordered mine on 4/13 and it has shipped. I worry that something is wrong with your order. Got lost in the shuffle or something .

 

tsger -- Has your Fedex track updated? Mine hasn't changed since Friday and I was just curious. I figured it might get here today if it was already in TN on Friday (I'm in VA).

 

no, mine still says just that it left the fedex facility in nashville on sat morning. No update since then. I was expecting to see it arrive somewhere by now, but no.

 

At least your's says it left Nashville. Mine has just been sitting there since Friday. I'm hoping that maybe it just hasn't updated (wishful thinking I'm sure).

 

Update: My system has reached the next Fedex facility, about halfway between Nashville and my house. Still on track for delivery tomorrow. We'll see!

 

Apparently mine had to go to Maryland to get to VA from TN, so that makes sense ;-). But it just left the MD facility, so I'm on track for delivery tomorrow too.

 

Shipment is in NV, waiting for it to arrive in CA tomorrow.

 

My shipment left its "layover" stop and is on the way to my hometown, about 5 hours away.

 

Same boat bro. I can't wait to get my hands on the 1640. Tomorrow is the day. Will you be performing a fresh install by removing all bloatware on your system? I was wondering if you were because i am too tomorrow...

 

Here's my plan...boot up with the default system, just to check it out briefly, then I'll make an image of the different partitions. Then I'll uninstall McAfee and see how everything is running. I plan to create a data partition, and bit by bit move my data over. I'll probably eventually do a clean install, but I want to try out the default configuration first.

 

Nice! I think I'm just going to boot it up for the first time and wipe it clean of bloat.

Questions:

1) Can I start the fresh install the very first time I turn on my computer?
Example: I just removed my laptop from the box. Can I pop in the re-install CD? Or do I need to set up my computer first then upon finishing do the re-install?

2) Will a re-install remove my computer of the 15 month subscription?

1) Yes, you can do the fresh install right away.
2) What is the 15 month subscription you are referring to? Not sure, but I think you'll lose it with a fresh install. You will end up with a generic Vista install. You'll need to install all the drivers and software yourself afterwards.

 

Update: On Fedex vehicle for delivery! I won't be at home for a couple hours, so I hope they don't bring it by then! If they do, I might have to wait another day!

 

Mine is on the truck too. I had mine shipped to work, so that someone would be here to sign for it. Should be here around 4 (at least that's when we usually get FedEx ground).

It's here . First impression: soooo shinny. I don't want to boot it up until I get it home though so I can give the battery its first full charge and I know I'll have to do a lot of set-up type stuff when I get it hooked up. It would have been better for my productivity if it had arrived closer to 4. So here is the official order time:

In Production: 4/14/09-4/24/09 (mine never changed stages according to the 800 number)
Shipped: 4/24/09
Arrived: 4/28/09

It....is....here!!! Very impressive first impressions. Only thing I noticed so far is a slight gap in the left hinge, as others have pointed out in this forum. Not a deal breaker for me, though! WOW, is it ever slick!

 

Out of curiousity is your C drive showing 500 GB? Mine is only showing 450. It also says that the drive already has 30 GB on it. That seems like a ton for an out of the box computer.

 

Yes, mine was the same. Remember, the Recovery Partition is 15GB. I repartitioned my HDD, so that now C is 100GB and the rest is for Data (not counting the recovery partition).

...Installing Windows updates now...

 

I think what suprised me the most was how much of the HD was already full, but so far I'm really liking it. I've got all the updates down. Now I'm just trying to decide if I want to install Office tonight.

 

FINALLY got mine delivered today at noon after exactly one month of waiting.

Initial impressions are very good. My particular unit does not sit flat and is a bit wobbly, but that can hopefully be fixed. Other than that, no other issues. The RGBLED screen is beautiful, system performance is snappy enough, and the keyboard is comfortable to type on.

I'm installing Windows 7 RC1 7100 on it at the moment. Everythng should be set up by this evening

 

Ordered on the 2nd of May, and has been "In Production" for a few days now. Estimated delivery date is the 19th of May or before.

It better be before because thats ages.

XPS 1640 T9550 500G drive

 

Just got delayed a week.
New EDD 5/19

 

I ordered on 05/03/09. (500G, blue ray, rgbled lcd, etc)
My order confirmation e-mail said EDD: 05/28 but now says 06/02.
I'm expecting that the edd will change several more times before it is actually shipped.

 

Finally some good news. My order status shows as shipped today. Original EDD was 5/5.

 

Yesterday Dell said my order was delayed.
Today they say it shipped, but not tracking info yet and EDD is still 5/19.

 

Dells order status line (1-800-433-9014) says the order was shipped on the 14th.

 

My order will have been in production for a week tommorrow. I'm not sure where they're made, but I doubt they work on sundays so thats only 5 working days they've had on it, and if they're based in the UK they won't of worked on monday because it was a bank holiday...

 

My order now shows shipped. Automated line says that is was shipped on
05/28/09. I had to listen to the recording twice to make sure I heard correctly.
Weird.
