What do you have listed as the screen?

I have 320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam, which has been pretty much confirmed as being the RGB, despite the WLED.

That's exactly what I have. Sigh of relief. The 'WLED' label threw me off. Thanks!

Now I just have to work on the 6GB RAM issue.

Calling now. Will probably be back among the living two hours hence, and slightly more frazzled than now... :)

    For the basis of comparison:

    Ordered Nov 5
    EDD Dec 4
    Still In Production (Build stage)

    XPS 1645 Core i7-720QM
    4gb
    500Gb
    Bluray ROM
    RGBLED
    Everything else standard.

Anyone else place their first order between 11/2 and 11/6 and hasn't had theirs ship? What specs?

(Not trying to be whine-y in front of everyone with the multiple orders / wifi problem. I'm just getting a case of "What about me?"... You deserve yours first. I'll admit it.)

I wonder if anyone else has this problem... I've called the "auto lady" (800-283-2210, 3,2,1,1) and she said my order shipped!

BUT... she says it shipped on November 3rd, 1999.

It certainly didn't ship on November 3rd, 2009 because my order was auto-cancelled and redone twice since then. Online everywhere simply lists In Production.

Anyone else get the auto lady saying theirs shipped a decade ago or any other silly/impossible things?

Not sure what to do, now.

Dell Studio XPS 1645 (i7-720QM, WLED, 4GB, WiFi 5300, etc)
    Ordered: 10/20, EDD: 11/19, Auto Cancelled: 11/8
    Ordered
    : 11/08, EDD: 12/07, Auto Cancelled: 11/12
    Ordered: 11/12, EDD: 12/14, In Production ;(

I'm guessing the build hold up now for a lot of orders is the RGB-LED screen.

Well, no joy. Despite reaching a manager this time after several rounds, she knew even less information about my order than anyone, and seemed to be simply reading from some kind of script template. Turns out it's actually still in PRE-production stage, despite the empty assurances of past calls that they were making "special efforts" to expedite my order. Hah.

She says there is no chance for a 6BG RAM upgrade for my troubles. Even though if I order the same system today, it comes stock with 6GB RAM for roughly the same price.

I needed the laptop at the beginning of the month (some AVCHD video editing for an event). Now that I missed it, I won’t need AVCHD editing until next January where my existing laptop edits standard def video and stores AVCHD fine until then.

It seems likely that between the Black Friday deals, the Christmas sales, and especially the After Christmas sales, that I'd be able to pick up the same system for less than my current $1600 'coupon' price from October. Do you agree?

Is it folly to cancel, or is it simply being a chump to continue living with these very frustrating no-man's-land delay after delay which might put my system arriving in January anyway?

If your not happy with whats on your order, dump it. your the one who should be happy Its your choice, Get what will make you happy now, so your not sayin later..man i should have got that 6 gigs of ram when i had the chance... hell, if they keep this up I think i'll wait for the i7920 to be included.
This is just my 2 cents...take it or leave it. Good luck guy.

I ordered on 11/6 and the automated line says it is in pre-production--estimated to ship 12/1. Obviously there has been no movement in the build on this laptop which makes me wonder if it will ship on time.

    i7-720QM
    RGBLED
    4GB
    BluRay Combo Drive
    Obsidian Black

Also, what is the best method to track the status on an order? The online version says "in production", the Dell Order status # 1(800) 433-9014 says "your order was received on November 6th and it is currently being processed." The 1(800) 283-2210 (Option 3,2,1,1) says "this order is currently in pre-production. "

I finally resorted to the site below to track my order--- I typed in "is my order in the build stage" and got "maybe" as an answer. That is about as accurate as what I get from Dell and it is a lot faster.

My order was changed on Nov 10 to fix the issue with the wireless part number. The new EDD then was Dec 4. I have been using a number provided in the stickied thread about order stages here and it says mine is now in the build stage.

All I can say is if Dell dumps a Black Friday deal on the 1645s ... I am canceling and reordering if it has not shipped prior ...

Dell will let me cancel. I'm giving myself the weekend to think about it.

Dell's Black Friday flyer is already out on the web. It and the web today only have deals on the Duo Core versions of the Studio XPS laptop - no i7's yet. I'm wondering if the i7 unit prices will stay firm for a while, even post-holiday The last coupon I see was the one I used in October, which came with a $100 Dell gift card. Will Dell offer holiday deals when they can't even get the existing orders out? The cynic in me thinks yes.

I placed my order on 9/28 and my order has been delayed and canceled multiple times. The most recent cancellation was on 11/17. On 11/18, I sent the following email to Michael Dell, the salesman who entered the most recent order, and the resolution specialist I have been working with. I have called every day since 11/17 trying to get my order recreated and they just tell me that they are in the process of reordering the system and will call me back (which they never do). Every time I talk to Dell, it's like talking to a brick wall.

Yeah, I called robot lady alot. Every time she told me that is was still in production in the build stage. But once, about 2 weeks ago, she told me that it had shipped in 2004 something. huh? I guess I typed in the wrong order number because a day later, she said it was still in production being built.

On another note, I cancelled my order yesterday after it was delayed for yet another week. The new manager guy who was now calling me with updates said that is was the i7 that was holding up my particular build. I have a feeling Dell has different factories that have shortages in different parts. If that's the case, then that's bad logisitics on their part (on top of the absolutely absurd customer service).

Kudo's to those of you who stick it out while I am typing on my new HP Envy 15 that I bought last night. :D I was holding out for the Dell screen and the good deal I had, but the extra money bought me a exceptionally good screen (much better than I was expecting after seeing a RGBLED screen...it's better than even Sony screen's). Plus it has a non-fingerprint-magnet metal chassis that is really thin, awesome battery life, and even better performance!

Check it out if you're on the fence and you can find one locally (Fry's or Best Buy)....Cheers!

Actually, that feature is one of the things that intrigued me with this system. My other laptop (the Asus W3J) has a removable drive that can be replaced with a secondary battery or a second HDD. I have the secondary battery. Over the past 4 years, I think I have taken that battery out of the laptop to run a disk only a few times each year...and when I did, I never used it on my lap. most of my movies and music are stored on my network drive. if I'm playing a game, it's on a table so I can use my mouse. And when I don't burn anything while on the road...or at home really (I used the desktop).

It's hard to get a laptop that has a good sized screen and a removable HDD (or none in this case). Since I travel, I wanted something smaller but with a good screen and decent battery life (which is why I wanted the SXPS). Luckily, the slot load drive on the Dell reduces the amount of wasted space. I was really hoping that the new 15" Alienware would have the same removable drive (because the old one did)...but it didn't happen. So I am happy with this feature because I don't have wasted space and I still have 2 batteries.

I must say that the external drive looks very nice. It also provides 2 additional USB ports on the drive's case which is a nice touch. (I haven't used it yet tho...I'm waiting for my SSD to arrive where I'll need to install W7).

Teleskier you are answering your own question i think.

"Stock with 6GB of RAM for roughly the same price"

Call em up and tell them where to stick their RAM, and then reorder it from another rep. the "NEW" orders that havn't associated with delayed ones seem to be shipping out 2-3 times faster then us poor losers who invested early on.

I ordered mine on 16th November and I am from India.

I ordered the Dell XPS 16 with Core i7 and 4GB of RAM. Should I call them up and ask them to change it to 6GB of RAM? Or is 4GB good enough?

I hope my laptop comes on time!

    Thanks

At this point, I could care less about any upgrade to my laptop. I just want the laptop that I ordered. No compensation needed, just send it in!

@Crazysah: It depends on what you use your laptop for. Really, if you need it for servers, VMs and stuff like that then yes.

Why is the 1645 only expandable to 8gb of RAM and not 12gb or 16gb like the HP Envy? I ordered 8gb. How do they fill up those three slots to get 8gb (3,3,2)?

Yes, the SXPS 16 has 2 slots, and the Envy has four slots. That's why it can go to 16GB.

The Envy does not have an internal optical drive from what I hear ... so it has more room for memory I am thinking. The 1645 is pretty cramped in there for all that it has ... there is even an open slot for a Verizon (Sprint, etc) card ...

Correct. No optical drive left room for that and enough space for 2 1.8" drives (in place of the single 2.5") because HP included 2 SATA connections on the MB. HP just added the dual drive option last weekend on their website (the SSD is the Intel X18-m).

It also has 3 fans (2 cooling the copper on the i7 and 1 for the ATI 4830). You can see tons of pics of the internals in that owners forum.

    Thanks Ibrahim.

I ordered mine on 11/18 with a ship date of 12/11. When I call, the automated machine says pre-production. HOw long does it normally stay in preproduction? Do you guys think they're still delayed? I need to receive it by 12/17 since I'll be going out of the country for 4 months in january, and want to test it out for a good 2 weeks. From what I read on this forum, many ppl are still waiting, and only a few received it. But most of the original orders were before early nov. Is dell actually fulfilling them now?

My other option is the envy, but I don't like how it costs more - I have a config for 1770+tax, compared to the dell I ordered for 1710+tax.

From my research the disadvantages of the envy are external drive, lack of RGB screen, no backlit keyboard, shorter warranty (1 vs dell's 2yr), and no accidental protection. The advantages are more memory (6gb vs dell's 4gb), better video card?, 2 batteries (6+9cells), and arriving on time.

    Anybody has some input?

I think the ship dates are better aligned now?

I wouldn't know: trying to follow that pity fest (not criticizing;guilty, lol) that is the Order Status thread is kind of difficult.

It is a tough decision, but the optical drive shouldn't worry you too much. There is an external one. The RGBLED, backlit keyboard, and warranty are what got me going for the Dell. Having a Blu-burner (I think the external BD for the Envy is read-only) isn't bad, either.

Actually what I ordered from dell doesn't have the bluray burner just the BD read. But I saw the price you paid for yours in your earlier post, and you got one heck of a deal. I couldn't order when they had those discounts as I'm studying abroad, so I timed my purchase so the EDD is when I'm back in the US. I really hope dell fixed their shortages.

Does anyone have any idea how long is the "normal" time for pre-production? Actually the online status says in production, and the telephone says pre-production. I'm not sure why they say different things.

    nyknicks8,

The back-lit keyboard was a bummer to loose out on, but I really like typing on it a lot better than the SXPS 16's keyboard (I had one for 2 weeks a few months ago)...

The screen on the HP is very good. The colors on the RGBLED are very vibrant, but the HP's colors are more accurate out of the box. But both screens have great viewing angles and are nice and bright. I don't miss the RGBLED screen at all.

But you are definitely going to pay more for the Envy...

All that being said, I'd stick with your SXPS 16 order. It seems like the people who have been ordering in November have been getting it relatively quick (minus a select few). You should get it before you travel.

Also, keep in mind that HP is having their own delay's as well (for the custom configuration orders), but it is only adding about one week to their estimated 10 business-day wait times (so guys are waiting about 3 weeks with these delay).

    EDIT:
Dell's website always seemed to lag behind whatever the phone status was. Even when I canceled my order, Dell's email said that the website would take about 24-48 hours to reflect the canceled status.

nynicks i ordered 11/13 i see preproduction with ship n/a when i log into dell.. and in production/work in progress on the order status webpage. As far as phone lines the main one i call says being processed while the other where you do the 3 2 1 1 input says pre production..

im hoping the main page that shows pre-production and n/a shipping is just bugged, it would seem perhaps. given everyones troubles, it would be less nerve racking if dell was more consistent. The site does say 15 day build time, so im just waiting and see.

curious if its inconsistent like for you too?

Does the lack of an optical drive really actually give any extra space for the HDD since 2x 1.8" drives can easily fit in place of a single 2.5" drive slot?

I ordered on November 7th. My status is as follows--The online version says "in production", the Dell Order status # 1(800) 433-9014 says "your order was received on November 6th and it is currently being processed." The 1(800) 283-2210 (Option 3,2,1,1) says "this order is currently in pre-production. "

I too am wondering if they will meet my Estimated Ship Date of 12/1/09 with estimated delivery of 12/7/09. Although I seriously doubt it after reading all of the horror stories on this thread.

atlstang, mine (order 11/18) shows on the orders page "work in progress" and "N/A" for EDD. In the order status page it shows "In production" with "12/17" as EDD. ON the phone it tells me "pre-production" and EDD of 12/17. So I'm not sure what's up. But again, my order is only a few days old, but I got concerned since I read this forum after placing my order.

But no one has answered my question about how long it stays in pre-production? thanks

You might want to look at this page
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=156489

"Pre-Production: This stage has been confirmed to be before Kitting/Build Stages. It's likely this is a design stage or the stage in which parts are verified to be in stock. It's rare this option shows up, but if it does it's likely that your laptop is short some parts for the "Kitting" stage." ---from Spliner's thread.

I would also like an idea on how long pre-production lasts, but if Spliner's post is right then our laptops may be in pre-production because of a lack of some part. If that is true then only Dell would know when those parts will be in and available. Mine is also in pre-production and I ordered on November 7th.

Can someone answer my previous question? Should I change it to 6GB or stick with 4GB?

lol, this is something a few people have been trying to figure out in the Envy onwers lounge. Since it was only put onto the website last week, no one has received one with that option yet.

Some think that they are stacked one on top of the other while others think that they are put side by side somehow... I have no clue since I haven't cracked open my case (yet)...I'm waiting for my SSD to arrive in a few days. I have a feeling that there is a little extra room around the 2.5" HDD, plus the need for some space for the bracket and the extra SATA cable that would be needed for it to work.

    To those wondering about pre-production:

I finally had my order corrected on 11/10 with the updated Wi-Fi card. Afterwards that the order was in Pre-Production on one of the status pages, Work in Progress on the other, and the 800 number also stated it was in pre-production. As of 11/18 both online status pages changed to In Production, and the 800# changed to in the Build Stage. The online pages have since remained in Production but as of today the 800# lists the order as being in Boxing. Reading other posts it seems that it is either in preperation for delivery or, as some others have experienced, about to be cancled again. Also, I don't know if this is really apples to apples as my order was supposed to have been "Expidited". Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update. From what I researched, it seems like the actual "production" stage (not pre) can last up to 2 weeks (assuming no delays), so hopefully since I have a build date of 12/11 (EDD is 12/17), if it stays in pre-production this whole week, theres still 2 weeks for production.

But its good to know some ppls orders are moving.

And to them "expediting" it, I highly doubt its possible to expedite an order. They can expedite shipping, but the actual build time seems unfeasable. I think they just say that to get the customer to hang up. But I could be wrong.

    6GB vs 4GB question:

It's not a triple/double-channel question as the SXPS 16 only has 2 slots. It's just a general usage thing. What do you do on it? Basically, compare it to your current computer. How much does it have and how well does it perform. Then order accordingly.

Yeah i really cant say if its in production or pre. It all depends which page i guess you trust more, since their contradictory. The order status page seems/i hope is more trustworthy and the other is just buggy(as it just says n/a under shipping). At least thats how it is for me.

It really does sound like different ppl's experience does vary. Im hoping mine will be like those who go from in production to all the sudden shipped. Ill be patient for a while and hope since its still early, even though i could really use it i can wait. Dell service aside who ever designed this order status system should be shot, i mean really it cant be this complicated.

to add to the memory discussion, when i looked up the specs for the 720qm while researching. Its dual channel ddr3 memory controller on the cpu. like the desktops i7 800 series and i5's, so a third slot wont do much since its not triple channel (the i7 900 series is triple). at least thats what i read out of it. link
