Congratulations on your new laptop :)

I ordered October 16th and am still waiting on my most recent cancel/reorder (11/13) to get out of the build stage. My latest EDD is December 9th, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Dell will surprise me in a good way for once and get the machine here sooner.

I just received a delay notice yesterday, (the day it was supposed to ship)

They say they are out of 500GB HD.. interesting.. great planning???? over a month to get things in order, and they still mess it up over a hard drive...

    Ordered 10/14 -> EDD 11/19 -> now 11/30 This is such BS...

My EDD on the website was changed to Nov 30th. The phone service has no dates for delivery yet. That’s good that some of those guys with Dec EDD are getting them shipped early.
    Ordered 28 Oct
    EDD 19 Nov
    EDD 30 Nov (Updated)

So.. let's see the excuses given to customers thus far:

[ ] The CPUs are not available yet.
[x] The CPUs are out of stock.
[x] The base of the unit is out of stock.
[ ] The RGB LED screen is backordered indefinitely.
[ ] The 500 GB HD is out of stock.
[ ] The Intel 5300 WiFi card is incompatible with Windows 7.
[x] The Intel 5300 WiFi part number is incorrect.
[ ] The corrected Intel 5300 WiFi part number (before 11/2) is really still borked.

    Did I miss any?

[x] reflect lines I've been told personally.

I think we should classify it by location.. see if there is some logic by production site.. My understanding is these are actually assembled at several locations. I am assuming mine is from Tennesee, since I am in US.. 500GB HD btw... oh and 5300 Wifi incorrect part number was told to me on 10/28..

Guys, if people that ordered after you, are getting their items shipped, then there is no shortage. from the looks of it everyone that ordered after the 1st week of november has had their laptop shipped to them. whats going to prove this point is when mine arrives on the 30th or sooner of this month.

    Well see.

correct me if i am wrong, but no one that had their order created before nov 2 actually got that order, it had to be created after that date.

    Well, here's my history:

    - Order placed on October 16th, EDD set for 11/9
    - On 11/6, the EDD was updated to 11/16 with a delay.
    - Since the order still had the old part number, I called, complained and got the order cancelled and recreated. So...
    - Order placed on November 9th, EDD set for 12/4
    - Whine, whine. Order updated to Next Business Day.
    - On 11/10, the EDD was updated to 12/3 (faster shipping).
    - On 11/13, the order was cancelled inadvertently and recreated. EDD set for 12/9.

And that's where I am today... I'd certainly hope that my order arrives sometime before the end of this month, but the most recent e-mail from my 'Resolution Expert' (11/17) stated that manufacturing is out of stock on the base of the laptop.

At this point, I'm done with calling and complaining. If my order gets cancelled or delayed again, I'll be cancelling altogether and taking my money elsewhere.

I actually mentioned the other day to a sales representative that judging from all of these headaches, it was as though Dell doesn't actually want my money. His only reply was that I'm not actually charged until the system ships. Yippie skippie.

In case anyone is wondering: i7-820 QM, RGB-LED screen. Everything else standard (including Bluetooth 370). I've been in the build stage (In Production) since Monday morning.

I ordered November 6th ... cancelled the order to upgrade to BluRay on the 11th ... with an EDD of Dec 10 ...

The fact that you ordered the 9th ... maybe mine is close ...

Depending on which link I click though ... it is either "In Production", "Work In Progress", or "Pre Production" ...

Got a call today that the manufacturer was "out of parts" but they didn't know which ones. Don't worry though Mr. Williams, your EDD is still 12/8. Yeah right... Thought maybe it was the blu-ray burner but Ayiden got his, maybe it's the RGB as that's the only difference in order, other than I have 6GB RAM. But surely Dell isn't out of RAM!!!

You know, I bet if HP would drop the price of the Envy 15 to closer to what we paid for this they could drum up a ton of business from dissatisfied Dell customers...

ok now what's going on with dell?
    Here's my order status history:
    Dell USA
    Original Order Date: SEPT 28th
    Original EDD: OCT 27th
    Revised EDD: NOV 10th
    Order Canceled(by dell): NOV 5th
    New Order Placed(new order# re-assigned): NOV 6th
    Current EDD: Dec 2nd

On Monday(11/16/09), my dell rep. called me and said that the ' parts for the laptop are now all in-stock at the factory' and they will soon be putting it together. Today, 11/19/09, I called Dell order status, and was told that they got a new update from the factory and they say that the ' base of the laptop is back-ordered'. Now, who am I to trust? and how long do I have to wait more for it?

It's thursday, still in "Build stage"

It really wouldn't be a big deal if I wasn't about 90% certain something will go wrong.

Well... I got a 1645 delivered to me today, but it's the wrong one. My order got so screwed up, that I now have the wrong laptop in my possession because they couldn't stop the manufacturing process. :( At least I figured this out with Dell last week, so it was no surprise when it showed up today.

Time to send it back. I called Dell tonight, and they filed a claim to get it shipped back to them. Anyone ever go through this process? I'm worried this is going to take a hella long time. They told me tonight that "someone will contact me in the next 3 or 4 business days to instruct me on shipping and then ship me a return box"... this seems like a long time just to instruct me. Has anyone had experience with this??? Does this seem normal?

    What should I do?

    1. My order status hasn't changed at all since the order date. It's still "in production", NOT "changed."
    2. My order hasn't been canceled, still with old SKU wifi card.
    3. EDD changed twice from 11/17 to 11/24 to 12/03
    4. The delay content form was in the online order status page, not sent to my email.

Like I said, mine got changed the day after the second EDD which in your case would be 11/24. It seems change has to be automatic, if you call and try to get your order refreshed they tell you any changes have to be automatic.

Well, things aren't looking good for me. I am approaching the EDD. When I called the robot lady for an update, she still says that it's on track for an EDD of the 23rd...but it's STILL in production in the "build" stage. No big deal...I guess they can still pull it off.

My worry comes because she would normally go on to tell me that the ESD is on the 19th. But when I called today, there was just a long pause instead. After the pause, she went back to her normal set of questions.

I have a feeling that another delay is in my future because I called yesterday to complain about others recieving their order while I'm going on 50+ days of waiting and the rep said that they were waiting for more i7 CPU's (again).

Since I have been waiting for so long, I am starting to see a trend in shipments...it seems that Dell gets a lot of their "delayed" stuff in on Friday's. Once that comes in, people start getting shipment notifications as early as Friday night and on into the week. I assume that they send out shippment notification by Friday night because they know how many orders they will be able to fill based on what arrived.

So here's to hoping that a few of us (me included) will get pushed through the mythical "boxing" stage in the next day or two. :p

I hate to say it, but you might be screwed...but then again, you might be okay too. As m1n05_4 said, mine was cancelled after the second EDD but I wasn't notified at all. I simply noticed that my EDD went to NA when I checked online. It wasn't until I called that I found out what happened...the website didn't catch up until a day or two after that (the website is always a tad behind it seems...that's why I now call the robot lady for updates...I think she likes me ;) ).

Since the original order, Dell changed windows Vista to windows 7 and the Bluray combo drive to the one listed above... I was told on this forum the new drive is a BD burner.

    MidtownHD,
If what you want is what someone else would do in your shoes:
Check on dells home page to see if you can get the same sxps for the same money.... they have one for $1649 pretty much loaded..
    HERE
with a EDD of dec 11.....
I would call and say you want to cancel and reorder BECAUSE you WANT windows7..say its been way over a month... you would like windows7 AND a 3 year warranty for your time having to wait... if they say no..ask for someone who can cancel your order..cancel it... go reorder it yourself with win7, 6gigs (seems to be standard) WHY would you not wait a couple more days for something better when you have waited so long anways.
Unless you WANTED vista i would rather have 7 on the restore disk and restore partition. if something happened you would have to restore vista then reinstall 7 bla bla bla.
I dont think ANYONE with the old wifi # shipped. your holding out for the inevitable cancel/reorder.
This is ONLY my opinion in what i would do in your shoes.(then again, i am a tad crazy lol) Good luck in whatever you do...I really hope they get their crap together...Dell, you reading this?....Ya, i though so.

Well it happened...I got the email...My new EDD is 12/1. Nnnnnnnnnoooooooooo. IF I actually get it by that date, I will have waited 65 days since I hit "order." All of this without any compensation or upgarde (oh I've tried).

Sorry guys, but no thanks. Time to cancel.

Good luck to the rest of you...

If only I was smart enough to follow your lead... rather than continue on this frustrating journey that will most assuredly result in another delay (on December 8th).

A "Resolution Expert" is supposed to call me sometime today. After my order was delayed, the phone automation stopped providing an EDD or ship date. I will be surprised of I get a call and if the call is accurate or informative. The "R.E." said he would call in 24-48hrs and that was two days ago.

Nope... Black, with WLED 945p, Blu-ray player, Win7 Pro... There was a mess up in the re-order of mine after they re-did it with the "correct" part number for the Wireless card... long story short, I knew this was coming after they notified me last week that it was too late to stop the manufacturing process on this one. Hopefully I'll get the one I want next week.

Just means I've got to wait longer... and I'm already moving into 6 weeks since I ordered it.

I had another guy call me, apologised - said 'this is how EDD works...illegal for us to give you a date...blah blah' like I care, point is, Dell Cancelled order on EDD and made a new one = compensation.

I would cancel only that HP doesn't have a good enough config. Dell has always been famous for low price config. and low quality support/service.

No, 6GB is 2+2+2 because it is preferred by Intel (notice that the line item specifically says "2 dimms"). Also, you can Google "2GB DDR3 1333MHz notebook RAM" an you'll see those prices.

It is a 4GB module and a 2GB module. I received my 1645 and opened it up to swap the hard drive, and there are only two memory modules in there. That's the reason it's so expensive to upgrade from 4GB to 6GB on their website: a 4GB module is much more expensive than a 2GB one.

The tri-channel memory you're thinking of is for the original desktop i7 processors (Bloomfield, I think). It may have carried over to Lynnfield but I know that the mobile versions are dual channel.

So if, in the future, I wanted to expand to 8GB (unlikely), I can just use any DDR3 1333 mhz laptop ram?

Further to and in support of your point, my invoice says:

    317-2365 1 6GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm

Until today (at at least - maybe sooner) the configurator was saying 3 dimms. Today, the configurator is non-specific.

@jbartlettjr - I think you're correct that I was mistakenly thinking of the desktop i7.

I wish you were right 'cause it would be much cheaper to get to 8 GB if we had a third slot for a 2 GB stick of ram!

Yep and when the time comes and you want 8GB, you'll be tossing the 2GB you're buying now.

I see you ordered on 11/17 - what is your EDD?

12/11, but from the sound of things, that is far from reliable.

Well, here's my history (same as others):

    Dell Studio XPS 16
    i7-720QM
    4GB, DDR3, 1333MHz 2 Dimm
RGB screen, but just noticed the new order says WLED -argh!!

    - Order placed on October 22th, EDD set for 11/13
    - On 11/8. the order said SHIPPED
    - On 11/9, the old order was CANCELLED
    - On 11/9, the new order was placed
    - Many 2hr long calls, many xfers to wrong people. Nothing done.
    - EDD is set for 12/4
    - Status is "Work in Progress" or Pre-Production forever, depending on the page I'm looking at.

And that's where I am today.

I want my RGB screen. I want the normal 6GB DRAM like all the new systems are getting.

I'm seriously thinking about cancelling, and reordering in the future when Dell has its act together, and probably for cheaper.

    RE: 56Giants

People have been told a lot of different things. We can chalk all of the discrepencies up to any number of things, including: reps are misinformed, there are differences in availability between factories, and any number of variations on "they simply wanted to get you off their back."
