I'm afraid not. We don't even get the Mini 9

Might have to import the 12 from UK. But first I will give the Samsung NC10 a try.

I don't know. Maybe because Netherlands is small. We can't get Inspiron 13 either.

Has there been a bios hack to get more than 1GB RAM on these machines yet?

I'm excited because it's the first netbook with 1280*800.

It's also very light for a 12" 1.3kg and very thin.

XP will run fine with 1GB. You can open 40 tabs in Firefox w/o a problem.

Edit: I can open up 40 tabs with various content in FF using 512MB and XP.

I was also very excited about the first two reasons. When I was reading a review all I could think about was "I can finally get a netbook and not worry about the small keyboard or a mini screen and strain my neck" (I have big hands...). However, when I got to the part about the 1GB limitation, I immediately lost all of my enthusiasm. They are really catering towards the very-very casual crowd. People who just use the computer for surfing, e-mail and word processing. If I want to do some development in visual studio, I will not be able to. It really is too bad. All I am hoping for is that someone hacks the bios to be able to read more than 1GB and this laptop will be much more appealing then.

Huh? I've run FireFox on way lower specced machines than this without issue.

I'd guess this will be a fine machine, if used for it's intended purpose. Outside of basic tasks, people will probably be disappointed, but that's the case with all netbooks.

Well if it makes you feel any better UK and Germany only get black ones and only 3 cells.

Now it's 529 euro with 3 cell. That should have been the price with a 6 cell.

I'm afraid the Vista license is expensive. It will be better once the linux versions appear. I think Dell isn't selling this with XP because the UMPC license of XP does not allow 1280*800 resolution.

No it doesn't really, make me feel better..Because I feel all Dell products should be available to everyone..no matter what country, etc. :D

    Oish that pricing.....

I wonder when the Linux versions will appear?..All these licensing restrictions..I can understand that. I deal with that sometimes at work. ;)

I think Dell needs to reconsider their price. $600 to get an acceptable battery and the faster processor. I dont think so!

Seems way too expensive to me. If you want a super lightweight machine with a great screen/keyboard it might be for you. It's great value against a Macbook Air!

But against the Mini 9 and better 9-10" netbooks it seems poor value - to me anyway. And for a little more there are some slightly heavier very good 12" laptops available.

I was playing around with a Samsung NC10 in Currys today: It seems a better machine, though it has a 10.2" SVGA screen, and its just 70% of the price. I was quite tempted.... but chose the Miele s4281 instead :D

At these prices, you may as well just jump up to an m1330. They can be had for a song, if you're willing to go refurbed (which I'm more than willing to do).

Yeah, or an Inspiron 13! I was specifically thinking of a new Samsung q210 or the older Q45. Allowing for warranty etc they cost about the same.... here anyway. A bit thicker and heavier, but fully featured. If you can get past the tarty stying (glossy black with a lipstick smear across the front), a much better buy.

Yeah that's valid for any netbook though. If you're willing to go a bit heavier and bigger, you can get a lot more laptop for your money. The big benefit of the netbooks, and also the Inspiron 12, is the weight and size. For what I do on the road, a bit of surfing and IM, any netbook will serve me fine. I don't need a full laptop.

I think the most interesting alternatives to Inspiron 12 are refurbished Dell D430s. Slightly heavier but a bit more power.

I think we all understand this.

The point is, now that netbooks are getting larger and more expensive, you aren't gaining nearly as much by going with a netbook over a regular notebook.

I understand that. But for me a 1.8kg notebook isn't a replacement for a 1.3kg notebook. And I think the same goes for most people who are interested in a netbook.

I suppose my point was that a few months ago the choice was between a 9" 1kg netbook or spending some more money on a 15.4" 3 kilo laptop; anyone who wanted a portable machine wouldn't do that. But now the weight difference between a 1.3 kg and 1.8 kg machine is much less and the cost is the same, some will choose the heavier machine. For many, as you say, weight will be critical and the lighter machine wins.

The Dell I12 is a very important machine because it gives people more choice; maybe we're seeing the start of the blurring of the division between netbooks and laptops. There are posters here who've said they'd like an optical drive on a small netbook  and parhaps a manufaccturer will cut down a 12" non-Atom notebook to compete.... Which brings me back neatly to your D430 point; but like the Inspiron 12 it needs to be cheaper.

    Thank's Jay!

Those are nice photos you found! I like that tote..though it's not part of the package..it look's nice with the I12.

I wonder if that sleeve is something Dell is including w/purchase? Like they did almost last year now, with the XPS 1330/1530??

I don't know if I really like that White color, though for the I12.

    Aaaah..personal preference..such a great choice, eh?

Do you like your xps? I have a xps 1330 but gave it to my husband becauses it vibrates so much on the hand rest.

I tried the studio 17 but it's soooooooooo big.... I'm sending it back....
Wondered about the xps 15 verses studio???

I use a dell desktop most of the time...
oh the mini in white.. and ordered the 12 in white.
I think I may sell the mini in white when the colors come out..
    cuz colored mini's seem awesome...

Hi!Hi! I really want the I9 in red, or the I12 in red..but HP has that Viv' Tam design in the Red Multi-Color Art design and, its nice looking :D

    So I dunno! I'm waiting..really waiting on the I9 in red...been waiting since June..so a bit longer won't hurt! :D

I really, really like my 1530 (her name is Scarlett the Red) BTW...yeah, I know.. :D My first lappy and has lived up to the standards, that I have expected out of it!

Sorry your 1330 didn't work out for you, at least your hubby get's to enjoy it! :) Also, too bad the 17" didnt work for you. That, though would be too big for me. ;) I dunno I think I would be torn between the XPS and the Studio..
I like my 1530 so, I'm a little more biased in regards to that LOL :D

Yes, you do have several notebooks and netbooks, and a desktop..

Having several computer's doesn't make you a computer freak..it just makes you very unique! :D

Obviously, my opinion on the matter doesn't count for much, considering I haven't used one. But, I'll throw in my 2 cents.

To me, just based on the picture, it looks better than the one on the Mini 9. I like that it has a border all the way around it. I also think that it looks more rough than the Mini 9's trackpad. To me, that's a plus.

In my opinion, the trackpad on the Mini 9 is a little too slick and the borders don't offer enough definition. At times, it can be hard for me to feel my way around the trackpad on the Mini 9. I'll be trying to scroll down a page, only to find that I'm trying to scroll on the palm rest, because the pad doesn't feel much different.

Not really. I had a Samsung NC10 for a couple of days and I was surprised how well the 10" screen works.

    Samsung NC10 vs Dell 12:
-more portable because of the size
    -2.5" full speed hard drive
    -150 euros cheaper (380 vs 530)
-about 3.5 hours more battery life

    It's more likely I'll buy a NC10 again.
