Kind of funny that they updated the canadian website first, yet canadians don't get the options yet, they have to wait. Not funny for canadians, just ironic I guess.

YoJr, I have to give you credit for giving us the scoop and risking your own neck in doing it.
-
-
yeah thanks for all the info yojr, it was a big help. just wondering i hear the new insprions have like a metal type of case on the interior, and is that how the vostros are going to be or will they be like a black plastic?
-
-
if you have connections to dell can you plz get any info about teh weird DDR2 and DDR3 issue on their gfx cards?
on some pages they state it with DDR3, on others not, different employees give you different informations and and and...
i personally ordered a 1520 with dedicated DDR3 but in the final confirmation via mail it says DDR2 and such stuff....
we are already discussing this issue over in this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=135186 but noone seems to have any reliable answer. some say DDR3 and others DDR2 but all that i can count on are the "?" above my head -
I browse through a few Dell offer option from other region and there is no option choosing Window XP.All are in window Vista whilst they have XP driver provided http://support.dell.com/support/dow...ceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1520&os=WW1&osl=EN
YoJr would you mind confirming whether when will Dell going to offer XP ? -
So is the entire casing magnesium, or is it just parts? That was a huge part in my decision, but it bothers me someone said that the inside is metal. Does that mean the outside is not? This is going to ride around in my backpack so I need a sturdy notebook.
-
Chassis is internal, outside is like all notebooks lots of replaceable plastic panels. If your that worried about it, get a padded sleeve. I plan on getting my boy a Backpack type case....prob with a Sleeve as well.
-
I have a backpack built for a notebook already, bought in anticipation of recieving my laptop a month ago. If you think you are gonna want to buy one for him, let me know, I bought this pack about 2 months ago, just before the start of spring/summer classes, and I think I want a different one. Would sell it cheap, so pm me if interested.

Ordered it tonight, due to ship out on the 18th, hopefully they will actually be on time this time, and not 2 months late like my previous one would have been. -
oh yeah, I do plan on upgrading the ram to 2 gig asap, and I may upgrade the HDD to a 7200 before long, haven't decided yet if it will be worth it with Vista's prefetching.
-
-
-
-
Heck no I didn't forget, that was the only reason I could afford it. My previous laptop was 1016.64, the new one is 1,125.71. giving a difference of $109. I would never have bought it otherwise, it just wasn't worth $500 difference.
-
just do a search for dell coupons, or if you just want the code: TSD1$NG00WFD4N
That right there will get you $350 off. BUT it will not work in conjunction with school/employee discounts at all, as well as the systems that give you a discount for upping the service plans give you like $292 off, that just jumps to $350, not the 292+350 off. Trust me I tried -

-
haha alrightt. well im gonn be using a student discount and i have the 200 dollar off coupon
-
haha sorry ive been at work all dayyy so much to catch up on
-
i'm to think that these coupons are better than the EPP crap I've been seeing around. The prices that people are paying seems to be still too much, using the EPP discount.
-
well i configured a pretty loaded 1520 with student discount and 200 off with the middle protection plan i think its dell care plus for 1600.
-
you may want to price out the system both ways. I found it cheaper to not use my education discount by quite a bit.
I didn't use the educational discount Jaymz, I just bought it using the regular Dell site. Only way I can see the educational discount being cheaper is if you were buying the premium service plans. You get so much off, then an additional percentage off, and it can come out to quite a hefty amount off. But I also noticed that the prices were higher on the student site, and then discounted so came pretty close to regular site. -
well this is what i have for 1613 using 200 off on the dell university site. not the pre configured system cause you cant seem to use the 200 off on there.

not bad at all, that system priced out to $1966.02 on the regular site. But see, that's what I am talking about, the only way that it is better to go student, is if you upgrade the service plans, otherwise right now you are better to use the other...
-
yeah i upgraded to plus but that 1966 is before any discounts right? so i could realistically get the 1966 and subtract the 350 and its about the same price.. im gonna check it out.
-
Now see, I just repriced my system on the student site, and the only difference is they give me in home service automatically, which I don't really care about. And the system would have cost me $125 more if I had went through the student discount instead.
-
lol, that would be nice, but that wasn't before the discounts. It looks like your best way to go is the student/EPP site.
-
yeah definitely gonna go through that. i mean its basically a g1s without all the flashiness and thats what im lookin for a little thicker than i would have liked but for 1600 cant really complain and you're gettign a pretty powerful machinee
-
hehe, I will take mine slightly dimmed down from yours for a much nicer 1125 thank you, but it would have been nice to be able to afford a better service plan.... But the memory and Hard drive, for the price dell wants, is ridiculous if you ask me. You can get 2 gigs of mem at newegg for $80, and it is so easy to change, I can't justify the extra $70. But I work on computers a lot, so that's me.... to each his own. But a nice deal for what you spec'd it with.
-
I just bought a 1520, lets hope i made the right decision.
-
yeah liquid me too. all the computers in my house are built by me. so yeah i migh t stick with one gig and just buy 4gigs instead well see. the thing about the hd is that newegg only carries 100gb at the biggest at 7200RPM i just need a laptop that can replace my desktop so i need all the goodies ; )
-
alright, I have looked all over the web, but just can't find the answer, is the 1520's sata connection running at 1.5G or 3.0G? Because if I am going to rip my HDD out and replace it eventually, I want to know what my options look like.
-
not true anymore ninju, they just released a 200 gig hitachi travelstar for $250, and 4 gigs on there is about $200. But beware that vista 32 can only support 3 gigs not 4. You can install 4, it will see it, it just doesn't know how to use it. Where as vista 64 does.
-
well i have a copy of vista 64 but i kinda want to put xp pro on it when i get it. i think im just gonna get the 160gb form dell though and just get an external maybe well see haha. thanks for the heads up though on neweggs stock.
-
oh and did you find out what speed they run at? it would be nice if it was 3.0g
-
no one has said yet, and I can't find anything about it anywhere. Hoping YoJr is still watching this thread and answers tomorrow
-
me toooo. and i want to know how to get a wireless n card..its not selectable when you do student discount. and do you know what speed the ram is at? im gonna buy 4gigs. its like 200
-
get the 667MHz ram, it's a waste of money to get any higher. I read in a post somewhere that some guy got 800 thinking it would run 1:1 and the system automatically down clocked it to 667. I understand why he would have thought such, I can't understand why the santa rosa chipset doesn't run DDR2800, but alas, I am not a computer engineer.... That is odd that the N card doesn't show up for you, but it does for me. Only thing I can say at this point is either A: Ebay or B:search google for dell specialty parts stores.
-
haha yeah ohh and im going to college this year as a computer engineer so ill let you know when i find out about that ; )
-
). XP on the other hand is the one that can't support more then 3.
-
ok, so the drives they use are 1.5, but does the board support 3? Didn't mean anything by saying I hope you were still watching other then that. Perfectly understandable you want to spend your nights with your wife.
So your saying if I want to stuff 4 gigs of ram in my system now, that vista will see it and use all of it? Just to clarify. -
Thats one of the biggest pluses with Vista over XP...memory usage and the amount it can use take advantage of. You could probably get the exact number at the MS site...but 4Gb should be cake.
Do you have a link to this Newegg ram your talking about? I was specing at 2Gb, but if I can save enough I'll go the Newegg route. Thats what I did with my I9300.
Also, not looked myself yet...anyone found Service Manuals for these yet? -
(or at least one could hope). But I was impressed this Vista. I didn't like it until I went through my certification because on the surface it still looks like M$ but underneath it has stuff that linux has had for years. So I hope that M$ has wised up and learned that the way they have been doing this was the wrong path. Vista as some great hidden things if you have the ability, play around with it. Try deleting some files from your windows\system32 folder, then boot to your cd..... Very intelligent on fixing it's self. It is a dream to support.
-
Even Microsoft says so:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605
"However, to avoid potential driver compatibility issues, the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista limit the total available memory to 3.12 GB."
Vista Home Basic (64-bit) has an 8 gb RAM limit (I don't know why they bother, but whatever)... maybe that's what you were thinking of?
By the way YoJr, thanks for all the info, and... I'm sorry if you this came up before, but... have you heard anything about a 15" XPS notebook?
