-
-
The coupon is good for at least ONE MONTH, so that's no problem...
-

-

color and camera?
btw, does anybody know (by calling them) when dell is going to get their act together and offer draft N and add-ons for us poor university studnets? -
NOT FAIR! At the Belgian Dell website we can only pick the 8600M GS, not the GT! Why?
-
they must not like you guys = S
-
I think it's a typo. On the Dutch website when you check the specs of the 1520/1720 they clearly mention the 8600GT with 256MB DDR2. While during configuring, you get the 8600GS with 256MB DDR3. Would the memory upgrade make up for the difference in GS/GT?
-
You are right! There is hope
The Dell chat will come online in half an hour, I will ask them if it's the GS or the GT to be sure.
UPDATE: Unfortunate, it's the GS  The representive said they might release a GT version later on. -
We have the same issue in Australia. It says 8600GT with DDR3 on the product page but when you go to configure it it only offers DDR2.
-
This isn´t true you guys. I just spoke with someone from the Dutch Technical Support and he said it´s a typo. He said it will be fixed as soon as possible! It would be a little strange if only the Dutch Dell site would have a 8600M GS and all the other Dell sites a 8600M GT, would´t?
-
That's all that I'm waiting on...
-
Dell uses all brands... They do that so they don't have to wait for a manufacture to ship, keep stock rotated so on... They use all the main brands... mostly Fujitsu, Maxtor, and WD. Those are the main three they use but I have seen others on some occasion. All big name brands though.
The keypad is a matter of opinion and if you can knock my wife who types 110+ WPM with a 98% accuaracy who likes having the key pad since it is easier to key in numbers that way. I hate not having a ten key. I can type over 11000 key strokes a min on the ten key but I drop drastically when using a notebook keyboard that doesn't have one. So It is okay to state that you don't like one but don't bash on a decision made that was a result of market research... I am afraid you are in the minority with this one since a lot of people have been asking for a ten key. If they didn't, then they wouldn't bother making usb ten key pads to plug into notebooks that don't have one. and they would get rid of it on standard keyboards. Just use more curtisy before posting next time
Dell sells a remote control that fits into all dell notebooks. It slides into the express card slot. It runs off bluetooth so you have to have that feature.
Sorry I didn't post over night but I usually only check during the day at work every couple hours. so if you have a major question for me, PM me and I will either reply or post my answer
thanks

Does anybody know the weight of the Inspiron 1520? Or any of the other new Inspirons for that matter? I can't seem to find that info.
-
For the Canadian site, the remote was free, but there was no bluetooth option in the configuration process, does that mean Bluetooth is built-in? (I already ordered a 1520 with the free remote)
I've read a few times that the 1520 is about 7 pounds I think, but you should confirm that. -
i would love to buy the 1720 but that 8600GT is a disappointment - to me the rest is perfect but that graphics card is too weaked and is a step down from the 9400's 7900GS! Anyone know if and when a 8700 or even aa better equivalent will be put into the 1720?? Also why does the 1520 have a 7200rpm option and the 1720 not!
work on it Dell!! -
me was told in the Dell chat that you can order 7200rpm harddisk in 2 weeks from now. (dutch tech support)
-
i was told 8600GT is very comparable to 7900GS because it is a very overclockable card.
-
I had the same issue because my school only lets me have 1 email. However, I discovered I could have alternate "aliases" which redirect to the same email. See if you have that option.
-
I noticed that Dell offers 7200rpm HDD for the 1420 and 1520 but not their 1720 model. I contacted customer support and they advised me that there is no 7200 rpm drive options in their system for the 1720 model. Does anyone have any further information.
-
Awesome, thanks a ton.
-
Yes, I asked them and they told me that in 2 weeks 7200 rpm disks will be available for the 1720. But I dont know if I want to wait another 2 weeks
where would you experience the difference between 5400 and 7200? -
any time you run a program, or any time the hard disk has to be accessed. 7200 is a pretty big jump and only been used in recent years on notebooks due to heat issues. If you have ever played with other notebooks, think of the difference between a 4200 rpm and 5400 rpm hdd, I don't know about you, but I notice a hell of a difference, so i would think there would be even more with a 7200 rpm.
-
Buy the computer with the cheapest HD they sell and just put whatever you want in there. You can buy a drive at newegg.com. Make sure it's 2.5" SATA. Dell should give you the OS and drivers discs; you'll have to reinstall the OS.
-
just an fyi though, that neweggs biggest 7200 rpm notebook hdd is only 100gig
-
I personally don't feel the need for a 7200rpm is that great, specially with Vista. In XP, yes everytime a Program is first loaded (and assuming you have enough memory for the entire program to reside in) the HD is accessed and the program is loaded into local memory. But face it, you load the program one time and use it for a long time after. A few extra seconds (maybe 30 for the biggest?) aint gonna kill me.
But with Vista its a new game....assuming you have enough memory. Vista learns your preferences...what programs you use the most often....and pre-loads them into memory. So when you access that program...its almost instantly opens up. Because it was in local memory, its hundreds of times faster then any 7200 or even 10k HD. But you need 2Gb of memory to take advantage of that. Also, the slower drives use less power and run cooler and quieter though overall HD's are much improved these days. But memory runs cooler still and uses way less power. I'd be focusing on the memory way more then I would on the HD....if your using Vista.
My I9300 has a 80Gb 5400...did not feel the need for the 7200rpm and I still dont. It loads up all my programs and games quite nicely thank you. (though my home built desktop overclocked machine has 3 HD's..all 7200rpm which is pretty standard for desktops) -
I agree.. It is sometimes cheaper to upgrade things after market. If you don't get the disks, just call them and let them know and Dell will ship them to you. I do think it is kinda stupid newegg doesn't have bigger notebook drives.
This is actually a cool feature of Vista. The biggest complaint when vista came out was how much memory it needs. I have 2 gigs and it is always using ~30%. but if you open a ton of programs that you use on a regular basis, you will notice your memory usage doesn't go up. this is because of this feature. Windows allocates the memory for use by itself so no other program and take it away. Windows then uses it for things like IE, Word programs, anything you use on a regular basis, etc... The only thing it doesn't do this to is games. -
Now that is one of the reasons I really wanted the 7200 rpm, i play games. And the game I play the most is UT04 and will soon be UT07, and that uses the hdd a ton when loading up new maps, and if your computer takes forever loading up a map, then the new game might have already started and been underway by the time you get into it.
-
ok how easy is it then to replace the harddisk?
-
That would be a question best suited for YoJr, as he is a tech for dell
-
any idea if the 8600GT maybe upgraded to a better card for the 1720 as it is a big blow that they use it in the 15" too, they should have provided dif cards!
-
how many NITS will the 1720's screen support? 200? 220? 300? 450?
-
I haven't seen the new Inspirons, but it's pretty easy in most laptops.
I don't want that card in my 17" if it's used in 15" models too... ewwww!
-
Any date when the Vostro line might be released? Also is the bluetooth built in to the laptop or is it a separate add on since I didn't see any option like that on the Canadian website.
Thanx -
I asked a Dell rep earlier and he said that the Bluetooth option is not available for the 1520, but is for the 1420 and the 1720... wtf!
-
Well, you can configure a 1520 with Bluetooth on their website. (I didn't check Canada though.)
-
Yeah, no option for that in Canada.
-
It is really easy. It (or they in case of the 172x) are located under a door on the bottom. Just like all the mini pci cards... Just remove the couple screws on it. the drives just lift out after that.
I answered that questions further back in the post... The bluetooth was just a couple pages ago too... The bluetooth module is a seperate card just like it has always been. it has been moved to the upper right corner of the system. you get to it by removing the strip along the top of the keyboard.
As for the release date...
RTS Dates:
Americas - 07/12/2007
Europe - 07/12/2007
Asia Pacific - 07/12/2007
Japan - 07/12/2007
China - 07/12/2007
This is for all the Vostro's including the desktop models. -
I wouldn't believe that rep. Granted I am for US home/home office. The only reason I would see them removing that option is for some law but that would mean you wouldn't have it in any computer/cell phone/ or anything for that matter. So yeah, I think he was just blowing stuff from you know where. I say just keep an eye out for it and it will turn up eventually.
-
A rep can LIE?! I already ordered mine >.< But could you explain what you meant with the strip thing up there?
-
Hey YoJr,
Sorry I didn't understand you clearly. -
Did u get my pm monit
-
yeah I did get it
-
YoJr, since none of us have seen the interior before, can you comment a little about the inspiron vs. vostro interior. from what i can see inspiron has a metallic silver to it instead of the old dull gray, which is nice. the vostro, from what u've told us, reminds me of old dell's where it's just all black and looks pretty cheap, which would turn me off. any comments?
-
If the vostro is all black, you don't need to worry about the paint fading away and giving the classic "used" look on your keys/palmrest. Course, the new inspirons might not have that problem, but we'll have to see.
-
Interesting, Andrew here said that this was it for the launches this time around?
-
i can't seem to find an option for the dell express card remote when configuring the dell inspiron 1420. can someone help me out?
-
Crimsonman Ex NBR member
You may have to buy it separately
-
I don't know but I would say all these problems ;bluetooth availabilty, only 1.8 processor available in canada and whatever else we can't get will be available pretty soon. (i hope)
Upcoming; Inspiron 1520 and 1720
