Santa Rosa laptops are indeed really pricey. I think it would probably be wiser to get a non-Santa Rosa laptop for now. 1.6ghz Santa Rosa won't be faster than the T7200. I wonder if the 4MB on die cache will really be all that different from the current Core 2 Duo with 4MB on die cache. I find it strange how while the Dell 1330 has been leaked and announced, the 1520 has not had any announcements, no pictures, no nothing. I do hope they reveal it soon.

Me too. I'm glad I read this thread today. I had a system all configured and ready to buy last night but I failed to push the little "Buy Now" button and went to bed instead. I'm going to wait to see what the new ones look like. I'm especially pleased to see more flavors of the "n" Ubuntu models, if that turns out to happen.

I think dell might release all the details by next week.. n might start shippin from june end... but I'm pretty sure Dell is gonna price new inspirons low cuz VOSTRO laptops wil bridge the price gap between Inspirons n XPS.. I guess 1520 wil stay around 1000$ n older inspirons wil go further down...

I highly recommend those who want to have the best of the best that isn't Santa Rosa, to purchase the E1505 if they have not already. The $500 deal is there only because of the fact that they are about to reveal the new product line at the end of the month. Chances are, you will not be able to max out everything when the new E1520 comes out and still get a cheap price under $1000. For one thing, the Santa Rosa architecture, as good as it may sound, the budget line for 1.60 ghz, really isn't much better than the Core 2 Duo 1.73ghz. If you decide to go for the better ones, be prepared to spend much more for it. Inspirions will only sell for $1000 with the budget Santa Rosa, and if you want the better ones that are actually comparable with the current Core 2 Duo's be prepared to spend at least $1400 to get it with an operating system.
Personally, there really is no point to getting it unless you want the 8600M GTS card, which would cost at least 1600 base configuration, which is only worth it for gamers, but if you buy the E1505 now, you will be able to get everything at a large discount and chances are, it will be better than the Santa Rosa budget processors. -
i dunno if this has been answered, but is there also gonna be a 1420?
-
The e1405 was introduced some time after the e1505 and e1705... I wouldn't be too surprised if they did the same thing again with the new designs.

-
This is what I've been trying to point out. Though I've been doing it from the ThinkPad side. True, you cannot compare the ThinkPad line directly with the Inspirons, but the Santa Rosa ThinkPads are cheaper compared to the previous models.
-
are you kidding me!
They E1705 with X1400 heats up like crap now
I hope they have a better cooling HSF for the new ones. -
I would assume there will be a 1420. If they don't, they are leaving a massive gap in the lineup, between the mainstream budget 1520 and the nearly-ultraportable (4lbs is closer to ultraportable than thin and light) and very expensive XPS M1330. The E1405 is their second best selling model right now, I see no reason to axe it going to the next gen. Hopefully, it will also have a dedicated graphics option like the dv2500t does now.
I think it will release in August sometime, in time for the back to school sales. -
Man, I'm so glad I waited now. A real 15.4" gaming inspiron notebook.......wow!
-
Hey look at this http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/DellPartsFamily.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&manufact=694&stype=2&family=Inspiron
They are in the process of adding parts for 1520, 1720, etc. -
edit:
@dburache - nice find.
Sadly, it does seem like they are only releasing 15" and 17" inspirons at first -
There is no way Dell will be offering such an offer on the release of their new notebooks with the Santa Rosa tech. As a result, the cost would be about 1,600 without any discount. They'd have to stick to budget Santa Rosa to make it look like its better, when it really isn't. -
However, i think dell raises the price intentionally to make the buyer feel good about the large discount through the coupon (which is btw a great deal imo). So when the new inspiron comes out, they will probably do the same.
Also, the inspiron is dell's budget laptop.. I don't think it would be smart for them to make the price that high, but as someone pointed out - they could put a budget santa rosa on there...
Apparently, rumors say that HP will release dedicated graphics tomorrow. This will give us more information on the prices for santa rosa with dedicated graphics -

am i the only crazy person here who likes 17 inch laptops?
I know thet are heavier but 15 is still to small in my opinion
am i reall the only sweet geek that love 17 inches
.
im about the get the m1710 in next 2 days
-
It's all personal opinion. There are plenty of 17" owners on these forums.
I currently have a 15", because it was cheap. But my next machine will be a 14" at most. I'm looking forward to the Inspiron 1420. -
I personally prefer 15.4 inches. Anyways, HP has rolled out their dedicated graphics solutions, but they really arn't great and in essence, they are comparable to the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 except with DX10 capability. You still can't play games at maxed out graphics or anything with those HP comps.
The 8600M GT however is a whole different story. For the sake of $500 off, I think I'll just stick with the E1505 with everything maxed out and in the end, it's still better than HP's offerings with Santa Rosa. The New "Santa Rosa" may be one of the most wanted, but it really isn't that worth it when their budget line is coupled with a mediocre graphics card. Good choice on Dell's part to use 8600M GT. -

the link contains an extra http in it that screws everything up..... -
Now it's $649 with a 9 cell and no option for a 6 cell. Sheesh -
Looky, looky, some news
http://www.electronista.com/articles/07/06/06/dell.vostro.leak/
-
eh the design is just ho-hum imo. looks more like a budget offering from compaq.
-
ouuhhh, ahhhh! Pretty.
-
I like the design so far, but I'll withhold judgment till I see it opened up.
-
the design looks promising so far (compared to the 6400).
It would be funny to see all these nice screenshots only to find the white bumpers there when there are pictures of it opened, LOL -
Keeping you guys updated more pics, here it is open http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=2538
What do ya think? -
Design looks nice, but the pricing of the new Vosotro will be interesting. It should lie somewhere between the XPS and Inspiron.
http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=2538 <- That shows only the XPS 1330 open, not the Vosotro, or any sort of new Inspiron model. -
The laptop thats opened up is not of an Inspiron or Vostro. Its the new XPS system. the 1310 (SP!?)
-
-
so, in light of the apparently redesigned inspiron 15/17-20, do you think there will be an e1405/640m upgrade? this is, of course, excluding the 1330, which is a whole other laptop. so, is there a chance of e1405 upgrade?
-
Eventually, but since we haven't heard anything about a new 14" Inspiron yet, they may roll it out some time later than the other models.
-
Vostro looks like a mix of XPS M1210 n the Old compaq design... N it still appears thick
-
wait, is that black-exterior laptop the vostro or 15/17-20?
-
-
Here's the Engadget article on this as well. They claim the pictured notebook is an Inspiron, not Vostro:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/06/dell-reportedly-set-to-release-new-inspiron-vostro-laptops/ -
Will this apply to the Ubuntu N-Series, or just new machine to push Vista on.
-
There is "supposed to be" an Ubuntu N equivalent for each model. I read it somewhere but don't ask me where. No way to know if it's true, but it's what I'm waiting to see.
-
Couple more weeks then I guess.. -
Does anyone dare post a question to Dell's blog, Direct2Dell.com, regarding the new Inspiron/Vostro lines? Such as, could you please provide more ample information as well as some high resolution photos of the laptops, opened and on all sides? haha
Seems as if Dell took down the PDF datasheets on the new notebooks. -
This looks promising. Dell might just be able to keep me as a customer if they make those machines available with Ubuntu *and* if they don't restrict the options of those machines. (Last I checked, can't put integrated bluetooth on a e1505n, which is a deal killer for me.)
-
I'm very desapointed since the new Inspiron looks thick!
I'm sorry but i think that they only change the color of the outside shell!
I'm hoping to be wrong! -
I was inches from getting the 1505 N Series, but I'll wait and have a look see here. I can wait a month.... Maybe.
-
Here's the Engadget article on this as well. They claim the pictured notebook is an Inspiron, not Vostro:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/06/d...ostro-laptops/
Quite weak..that's not an article but description..but nothing not posted before..
I still can't believe they're not putting a numberpad in there..well, looks like i'll get somewhere else.. -
I don't know if anyone posted this before,
but here's the screenies
