Santa Rosa laptops are indeed really pricey. I think it would probably be wiser to get a non-Santa Rosa laptop for now. 1.6ghz Santa Rosa won't be faster than the T7200. I wonder if the 4MB on die cache will really be all that different from the current Core 2 Duo with 4MB on die cache. I find it strange how while the Dell 1330 has been leaked and announced, the 1520 has not had any announcements, no pictures, no nothing. I do hope they reveal it soon.

Me too. I'm glad I read this thread today. I had a system all configured and ready to buy last night but I failed to push the little "Buy Now" button and went to bed instead. I'm going to wait to see what the new ones look like. I'm especially pleased to see more flavors of the "n" Ubuntu models, if that turns out to happen.

I think dell might release all the details by next week.. n might start shippin from june end... but I'm pretty sure Dell is gonna price new inspirons low cuz VOSTRO laptops wil bridge the price gap between Inspirons n XPS.. I guess 1520 wil stay around 1000$ n older inspirons wil go further down...

I highly recommend those who want to have the best of the best that isn't Santa Rosa, to purchase the E1505 if they have not already. The $500 deal is there only because of the fact that they are about to reveal the new product line at the end of the month. Chances are, you will not be able to max out everything when the new E1520 comes out and still get a cheap price under $1000. For one thing, the Santa Rosa architecture, as good as it may sound, the budget line for 1.60 ghz, really isn't much better than the Core 2 Duo 1.73ghz. If you decide to go for the better ones, be prepared to spend much more for it. Inspirions will only sell for $1000 with the budget Santa Rosa, and if you want the better ones that are actually comparable with the current Core 2 Duo's be prepared to spend at least $1400 to get it with an operating system.

Personally, there really is no point to getting it unless you want the 8600M GTS card, which would cost at least 1600 base configuration, which is only worth it for gamers, but if you buy the E1505 now, you will be able to get everything at a large discount and chances are, it will be better than the Santa Rosa budget processors.

The e1405 was introduced some time after the e1505 and e1705... I wouldn't be too surprised if they did the same thing again with the new designs.

This is exactly what I would do. Only they are so damn ugly I just can't do it. I have to wait to see what these new ones will look like. If they have the exact same design I will be very upset.

hp's santa rosa comps stayed in the $1000 range... why would dell's upgrade increase to $1400?

This is what I've been trying to point out. Though I've been doing it from the ThinkPad side. True, you cannot compare the ThinkPad line directly with the Inspirons, but the Santa Rosa ThinkPads are cheaper compared to the previous models.

I would assume there will be a 1420. If they don't, they are leaving a massive gap in the lineup, between the mainstream budget 1520 and the nearly-ultraportable (4lbs is closer to ultraportable than thin and light) and very expensive XPS M1330. The E1405 is their second best selling model right now, I see no reason to axe it going to the next gen. Hopefully, it will also have a dedicated graphics option like the dv2500t does now.

I think it will release in August sometime, in time for the back to school sales.

If they dont get out a 14" notebook with their other updates, it will be foolish. HP will most likely add a dedicated graphic card to their 14" notebook, which will cause many people (including me) to choose HP over Dell.

    edit:
    @dburache - nice find.
Sadly, it does seem like they are only releasing 15" and 17" inspirons at first

Keep in mind that HP's models that have Santa Rosa, the default one is the 1.8ghz, which is not more powerful than the Core 2 Duo 7300, and the most noticable reason why the price is so low, is that it comes only with an integrated GFX solution being the X1300, not the 8600GTS or any sort of dedicated graphics solution whatsoever. If they were to include one, the price would without a doubt, hike up. Keep in mind that the X1300 also isn't compatible with DX10 of course, so really, you arn't really getting the full power of Santa Rosa is capable of. If the HP came with a dedicated graphics solution of at least Nvidia GeForce Go 7600 with it and kept it under the budget price, then Dell would be out of business. HP was wise in sticking with integrated to make it cheap and light, but really, integrated is nothing compared to the X1400, which is why getting the Dell E1505 now would be the best. Max out everything, throw in the $500 off coupon, and you have the ultimate laptop with 160gb hd, wireless draft n, best core 2 duo processor for it, etc. all for less than $1,000. Nothing beats that.

There is no way Dell will be offering such an offer on the release of their new notebooks with the Santa Rosa tech. As a result, the cost would be about 1,600 without any discount. They'd have to stick to budget Santa Rosa to make it look like its better, when it really isn't.

Good point, hopefully we'll find out soon enough.
However, i think dell raises the price intentionally to make the buyer feel good about the large discount through the coupon (which is btw a great deal imo). So when the new inspiron comes out, they will probably do the same.
Also, the inspiron is dell's budget laptop.. I don't think it would be smart for them to make the price that high, but as someone pointed out - they could put a budget santa rosa on there...

Apparently, rumors say that HP will release dedicated graphics tomorrow. This will give us more information on the prices for santa rosa with dedicated graphics

It's all personal opinion. There are plenty of 17" owners on these forums.

I currently have a 15", because it was cheap. But my next machine will be a 14" at most. I'm looking forward to the Inspiron 1420.

I personally prefer 15.4 inches. Anyways, HP has rolled out their dedicated graphics solutions, but they really arn't great and in essence, they are comparable to the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 except with DX10 capability. You still can't play games at maxed out graphics or anything with those HP comps.

The 8600M GT however is a whole different story. For the sake of $500 off, I think I'll just stick with the E1505 with everything maxed out and in the end, it's still better than HP's offerings with Santa Rosa. The New "Santa Rosa" may be one of the most wanted, but it really isn't that worth it when their budget line is coupled with a mediocre graphics card. Good choice on Dell's part to use 8600M GT.

Not really. I really like 17" laptops too, they offer screaming performance, and usually more upgradability than smaller laptops. However, the 8-10lb weight is just too much to carry to school on a daily basis, which is why I usually don't consider a notebook with more than a 14" screen, outside the occasional really light 15"er (MacBook Pro, HP nc8430, T60/T61)

I've been watching the deal daily. First it was $649,with a 6 cell battery. Then a couple days ago it went to $599 with a 6 cell. Then last night I checked and it was $599 with a 9 cell and the 6 cell was $30 more! not another battery, but $30 more to get a worse battery.

    Now it's $649 with a 9 cell and no option for a 6 cell. Sheesh :)

Design looks nice, but the pricing of the new Vosotro will be interesting. It should lie somewhere between the XPS and Inspiron.

http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=2538 <- That shows only the XPS 1330 open, not the Vosotro, or any sort of new Inspiron model.

so, in light of the apparently redesigned inspiron 15/17-20, do you think there will be an e1405/640m upgrade? this is, of course, excluding the 1330, which is a whole other laptop. so, is there a chance of e1405 upgrade?

Does anyone dare post a question to Dell's blog, Direct2Dell.com, regarding the new Inspiron/Vostro lines? Such as, could you please provide more ample information as well as some high resolution photos of the laptops, opened and on all sides? haha

Seems as if Dell took down the PDF datasheets on the new notebooks.

This looks promising. Dell might just be able to keep me as a customer if they make those machines available with Ubuntu *and* if they don't restrict the options of those machines. (Last I checked, can't put integrated bluetooth on a e1505n, which is a deal killer for me.)

Here's the Engadget article on this as well. They claim the pictured notebook is an Inspiron, not Vostro:

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/06/d...ostro-laptops/

Quite weak..that's not an article but description..but nothing not posted before..

I still can't believe they're not putting a numberpad in there..well, looks like i'll get somewhere else..
