Even if they needed to ship barebone notebooks from China to build centers in the USA, there is no way it would take one month to get the parts, assemble, and ship.

I ordered my 1520 on 6/28, and the estimated shipping date has not changed since, which is 7/18.

Also I chose 2-day shipping, so it says estimated arrival date for 7/20, obviously. But I am leaving for vacation on the 20th. Do you guys think I should get the overnight shipping, or you think Dell might be early for some orders?

I think I might just wait until the 7/17 (the night before estimated shipment) and then choose overnight shipping. That way, if they do ship it earlier, then obviously I don't need to get overnight.

Dells website says that the laptop (1520) should be shipping on July 5, and should be at my door step on July 6th. Hopefully ill be getting it them. The specs are T7300 processor, 2gb ram, 160gb 7200rpm hd, 256mb video card, and a midnight blue finish with a 3 yr warranty.

The laptop was freeish because dell is replacing my current E1505 with the new model due to multiple problems ive had with it.

I cancelled my first EPP 1520 order (est 7/19 ship) and re-did it yesterday (Monday) so I could get the Wireless N option included (at no cost!) Ship date slipped 1 day to the 20th. It's a top configured gamer machine for my son...was $2136 Retail, $1555 shipped.

You have to remember they aren't only doing yours, the number of people that ordered the new dells is bigger than most expected. I work for a warehouse that basically resells different parts, all we do is basically repackage or add a couple of things. Any one of the orders would take no more than 1 or 2 days for a person to fill but there are so many orders that it takes huge amounts of time to fill the orders that just came in. (these aren't computer parts but it is the same idea) It isn't what you ordered that causes it to be a month(less most of the time) but it is all the people that ordered it before you.

also they apparently have to fully test your system to make sure it' sokay for shipment before they actually ship it.

right im assumeing thats where all the time comes in.

sure building the thing is a 1 day thing. shipping it to the USA takes 1-2 days more. And then they have to test it to make sure it works which can take anywhere from 3-4 days to actualy happen and finish.

Dell is a transnational company, correct? they should be able to pump out these laptops in less than a month, even if the number is very large. Im sure they employ a boatload of people.

For every order placed on dell, that is also 10 orders placed to suppliers(random guess).
There are huge numbers of employees, around 40,000 in the "Americas"(~87500 worldwide), and i still would not expect much less than a month. Although i do agree that a month is pushing it, my estimated shipping date is ~20 days after my order, 6/27 - 7/17.For my order they did meet that.
But with the work that goes into assembling a laptop(even if it is not anything special that is still time consuming), and then testing it, i think that they are doing a tremendous if they beat their estimated dates at all.

Dell works on a JIT inventory system, so getting the parts isn't the bottle neck. There are prob around 25 - 30 different suppliers used for the laptops so assembling everything should be the bottleneck. An article on another website said it takes about 8 minutes to assemble a laptop, meaning on person can make 6 or 7 in an hour.

well, about the Assemling-a-laptop-in-8mins thing. In the United States, we dont torture the workers anymore. Sure, its possible to work that fast. But it will work people to death. Stop being a Capitalist.

Oh,btw, Dell usually ships early than the est. dates.

    8 minutes? that's a bit insane.
Testing should take longer though, i mean imagine booting up a system, installing all the software Dell wants to install and then test every part in the system, probably test the battery. polish off the laptop (most likely), benchmark testing to make sure the parts aren't duds, i'd imagine every testing laptop would take a worker probably 1 to 2 hours minimum.

sure it might take 8 minuets to assemble. and then 8 minuets after that it falls apart.

I would prefer that they make my laptop in an hour and then have it work. And i really dont beleave that it takes 8 minuets. Ive seen people on youtube put together a laptop again, it takes maybe 30 minuets.

Uhh, doesn't JIT still mean that they order as soon as you do basically? And if not, if they order in advanced, they didn't order enough because no one expected this volume of orders to come in. There are shortages of some parts that take a couple days here and there to fill.
How many orders would you estimate came in for the new inspirons?

Hi everyone. Ordered my 1520 here in the UK, and it's due on the 16th. What I was just wondering though is whether you have a 'pre production' phase on the US Dell site? Because I've not noticed anyone mention it on here, and mines been in that stage for a week now. Just curious.

No, at least i don't in Ohio. I have heard references to it and kind of wish they did have that clarification here in the US. But mine was in the production phase moments after i ordered it. :(

I'm from Indiana and mine was in Pre-Production for about a day and a half, so either they got the parts real fast or it's just some crap status they throw up on the screen to make us feel like they are doing something.. I dunno. I just want my laptop! Lol

I'm not quite confident about Dell's order tracking, last night my laptop was still listed as pre-production, and this morning I log on and it says its been in production since the 2nd.

Ordered 07/01 in Canada and shipping date is 07/17 :)

It might just be the specific specs that I ordered. I'm speculating that the red colour isn't as popular as they thought it would be and there is a surplus.
I was expecting the worst when it came to the shipping date and was pleasantly surprised.

generaly it goes "in production" after about 3-4 days after the "pre production" period. It also takes about 5-7 days for production as the dell agent told me. this adds up seeing as how thier 20 day l8r estimated shipping doesnt include weekends.

Mines been in production for 2 days now. so i can expect it somewhere between the 10th and the 13th.

You got a screen that isnt HD nor is it the best for gameing. But hey if 1440x900 suits you then you win.

Well I priced out a 1520 on the US site before I made my Canadian purchase, and without extra coupons, the US version was like $200 more expensive. I was confused with that.

Is anybody's production date in the past?

My estimated ship date is in 2 weeks, but production apparently happened 2 days ago.

I don't mean to keep harping on this but some people should rebuild their 1520 with the coupon. I keep seeing configurations that should be much less.

the 350 off coupon isnt stackable so i dont see how their configurations should be less, as ordering the system through the university web site still stands as the best deal, although not by much. Using the home office site, the 350 off coupon only superceeds the instant $ off coupon ($318 for the 1420) only making the deal better by 42 dollars.
