agreeded - very annoying considering we're all just going to get the same copies of an ISO image delivered though the post. Dell should just post the ISO images on their site and we just then download it.

And then we'll all be annoyed by the 3kbps download speed due to the high traffic bandwidth.

I always prefer a standard install of an OS over the 'customized' version from a manufacturer as it simplifies support with microsoft and you can troubleshoot with confidence that it's not some custom code that Dell wrote badly (that they'll never confirm or fix.. not that you can ever find someone to talk to who actually has a clue).

lol well I called Dell and asked why no downloadable iso. He told me something about an agreement with Microsoft blah blah... Then asked him why no status he then proceded to tell me Americans are NEVER satisfied and if I didn't want to hang up I could sit on hold until I was ready to~music~

    Mine still says "processing."

I have a feeling it'll be two weeks before they're shipped out. Didn't one of the main screens on that Dell upgrade site say two weeks?

Hi there! I'm new to this forum and I'm looking forward to my brand new 1557 arriving on monday. I've seen you guys already waiting for your copy of Windows 7 and don't know how long it's going to take. The thing is my order is delayed too as I bought it on october 9 and since I have the possibility to install another copy of Windows 7 I think I'm gonna do it, cause I don't wanna be waiting another 2-3 weeks for my upgrade.

I'm not quite sure what version to install. I'm going to backup the original hd contents and then make a clean install with my usual software. I am comparing Windows versions and it seems Professional would be enough for me since I don't need the Bitlocker feature included in Ultimate/Enterprise (quite annoying if you ask me, at least in Vista it was a nightmare). But I just don't like that Ultimate includes, according to Dell, "compatibility with Windows XP applications" and it's not checked in Windows 7 Professional features. Does it mean Windows XP programs won't run properly in Windows 7 Professional????

And another important thing: I guess 64 bits version is a must-have with Core i7 processors, right?

    Thank you.

Edit: is the Windows 7 version shipped by dell 32 or 64 bits? When I bought the laptop it included Vista Home Premium. I wonder if the upgrade is to 7 Home Premium 64 or 32.

I don't know if this has been asked, but if anyone has their Windows 7 Upgrade from Dell, please let us know if it is an OEM Upgrade Version (Haven't seen this yet, but worried) or the normal Retail Windows 7 Upgrade.

Reason is, I have Vista Ultimate on my desktop. I ordered an XPS 1645 which will have Vista Home Premium.

I purchased a Windows 7 Pro Upgrade and Windows 7 Pro Retail. I want to distribute my licenses to the best of my benefit. This would optimally be:

Desktop: Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Pro Retail
XPS 1645: Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Pro Upgrade

Extras: Vista Ultimate Retail is free for use on another PC and Windows 7 Upgrade through Dell would also be available for use on another PC.

Though to be safe I might just go... (Because maybe the Dell Upgrade disc only works for OEM Vista Installs)

Desktop: Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Pro Retail
XPS 1645: Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Pro Upgrade

Extras: Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade from Dell

anyone seeing shipping status ???? its crazy, looks like this upgrade process is a blackbox. you submit and then it gets into a blackhole and for us its a blackbox, To be true, i would prefer seeing a "processing..." status, than a blank status .. whats blank status ??? Is it too much to ask for a valid status ???? or am i just impatient ... ???

Wow I signed up for this and registered my product a few months back. I check the site today and it changed a little and I just realised I have to ORDER IT. So I just ordered it today when I thought by registering my product months ago ordered it..Pretty lame if you ask me. Hopefully its not a queue or anything..

I registered mine for Win 7 upgrade. Showing blank status like for most of you. Customer care doesn't know anything about this. They asked me, "Windows 7 umm what?". Can you believe that?

I just hope it doesn't take a whole damn month.

seriously, the blank status is killing ... give us some status atleast .. i have seen it couple of times and i presume the whole concept is silly. Why register first, why not order directly .. with registration people are forgetting passwords since registration to ordering took well over couple of months

dell ought to have handled this better.

yeah right this is annoying really. The moment I ordered on 22nd midnight, it showed status as "Processing", but the next day it started showing as empty.

As per their upgrade dates, the English version should be available by 26th and should ship soon thereafter. And its 26th noon at my place now, hoping to see some status change by tonight.

While I do believe Dell handled this better than others by making the whole process easy and online (its just a matter of time now), unlike HP and few others to whom we are suppose to send a postal mail confirming eligibility, genuineness and what not.

As the disk thats being sent out (for the same os version / bit number) is an exact copy for everyone here - i am sure we can all help each other out once the 1st person receives theirs ;) if you know what i mean ;)

I also saw "Processing" appear then dissapear.

You don't think it could have been Dell checking our payment cards out, has anyone had any funds taken from their credit cards?

Thats a good idea. But is it 100% sure that the copies would be pre-activated? What about those whose Studio isn't eligible for free upgrade? Something must have been done about them too in order to prevent free upgrade of *every* Studio laptop, so I guess activation would be required. I read on HP's site that they'd be shipping the Windows 7 COA too in the kit.

I don't think so. At my place, upgrade order from Dell is free. Charged 0$ but still showing blank status.

    99% would be ;)

    *If* upgrade will be preactivated:
If someone will install upgrade on the computer not eglible for upgrade - surely it will work, because it is preactivated for all Dell computers.
But this is still illegal, because he didn't paid for that.
Ordering "free" upgrade you will receive confirmation you have license. People who ordered and paid, received at least confirmation they "purchased" upgrade, this case meant new license. For example on my bank account I have confirmation I paid and it states : "LICENSE"
I'm not sure they will send a COA. Even in this case, *if* preactivated, it will be not neccesary to put a serial number proceeding upgrade. Just the same with your reinstallation disk : you have a COA with unique number, but reinstallation disk isn't asking for that (because it is preactivated). But without this COA it would be illegal to reinstall.

True, but in the US. People in the EU do have to pay. For shipment and servicing, whatever does it mean.
I ordered, paid, money gone from bank account, received confirmation. Still no status of order at dell's page.

    Too much "if" eh ?

In the UK, we had to pay £15 for shipping and handling and agree to Import regulations??

Most likely means the Upgrade Kit is coming from the US...

    Yup...

22GBP=35USD here. For each DVD (I ordered two-see my signature) even it is sent by one parcel.

Definitely it is not free upgrade in the EU, but at least cheapier than box. And this is much slower too. Full box is aviailable everywhere, we can purchase directly from M$ and download it etc etc... I have no idea what is Dell waiting for.

haha yeah I assume the possibilities. ;)

I doubt Dell will/can do *anything* that will arise possibilities to use Windows illegally. AFAIK, COA is created by Microsoft, so if HP is sending COA, probablility is higher that Dell and other companies would send COA too, coz the *KIT* is going to be the same. Lets wait and watch anyway. :D

Just had a phone call from DELL and they have managed to cancel my order for the Windows 7 32bit upgrade and replace it with the 64bit version upgrade.

hope this now means i am not at the back of the queue now :(

Guess this also confirms that they are not shipping them any day now

Yes its preactivated........... your lappy should have A07 bios on it before installing the upgrade.

The key is in the Bios. SLIC 2.1 table

you can probably use it on any Dell with this bios.

    Vista worked this way.

Do think it will be possible to use the MSDN install disk and then use the activation certificate file (the one ending in .xrm-ms) to activate it? If so this would be a nice way to do a clean install and choose our own drivers ?

I still have no "status" for my Win 7 order but I just logged in and noticed that I now have an estimated ship date of November 1.
So, either that's just a placeholder or things are actually moving behind the scenes.

    ***EDIT***
Wow, it just showed up about 2 minutes after I posted. It was sent by UPS.

Package contains a printout of my original order (Oct 22) and 2 discs: Windows 7 Upgrade Option (Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium)and Dell Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant DVD 64-bit

Disc has a Product Key/COA sticker on the package.

I got mine right after school today. Same thing; 2 DVDs and a quick "how to upgrade" guide.

Question: I'm assuming you can do a clean install with the Windows 7 DVD? I tried it in a virtual machine, and everything worked, but I didn't actually click "Install Now". Don't want to over write Ubuntu.

And I read somewhere that you have to upgrade your bios (something about Windows 7 having a new software licensing control thing...for OEM only)?

And I really like that they send us the Drivers and the Windows 7 compatible apps.

I'll drop a pic when I get home (at work right now). No box, just a plastic bag with the Win 7 disc (standard Dell OEM look) and the Upgrade Assistant (which Dell says you have to insert first...).

No sticker badge but I never expected one.
