PS: just look at those that purchased studio xps 13, constant problem, heat, dead, I'm sure studio 14z is a much better machine, but why take the risk now and don't get windows 7?

Hey there..if your torn between both, your best bet would be to fill out the
    What Should I buy FORM

and, then when complete, create a thread and paste it into the What Notebook Should I Buy, section of the forum.

You will get great response from all forum members! ;)

Imagine a Dell 1536 and you got the AMD Turion x2 and an ATi HD3200 = 80-90*C under load.

It does come in handy though...breakfast in bed...gimmie some bacon and play TF2 while I wait :D

I have a friend who was looking into getting a 14z to replace his three year old HP tx1000z.

That thing is on it's last leg.

Thanks for the suggestions, Howard and Cin'

I have to make a decision in the next couple of hours though.

Only if we can know whether that Dell deal would return at some point in the near future.

Don't know if it helps anyone here teetering on the edge of buying a 14z but I just noticed that techbargains has a 28% off coupon for the E6400 and E6500.

Since their prices are already "lowered" from the insane retail price they suggest for those two laptops it's not that big of a discount. Took my config from 1400'ish down to 1200'ish.

Still haven't pulled the trigger either way here, just thought it may help since the E6400/6500 was my second choice after the 14z.

Coupon for the 6400/6500 is good till July 1st too, so you can use it and still hit the Win 7 date :)

Guys, things have been crazy at home and work. I will test the laptop tonight. The discrete tweeter thing is FUNNY! I'll test it. But find the claim funny.

I forgot to mention a strange first for me. The laptop came with finger prints and smudges all of the screen and shiny black bezel.

The build quality of this laptop is very high. Its a uni-body plastic (I made that up). But seriously the whole bottom is one hunk of durable plastic. If you look at the service manual you will see the way to take it apart and replace things (like hard drive) is to open it from the top. You first pop off the keyboard, then start digging. Its a pain for upgrading but it mosdef is very solid build. And to add insult to injury...there is one tiny bay door on the bottom to access the memory!!!!!! LOL LOL LOL. Thanks Dell, I appreciate giving me access to that ONE ram slot.

I'm with the others here. Why did Dell show us their skillz by building the XPS 1330 and XPS 1530 and then take it away. Both of those were nice and thin, metal casing, and stylish. Then they morph it into the "Studio" line but add fat and plastic. While I agree the Studio XPS 13 & 16 are very well done...what is up with the freaking girth!!! (size and weight) I have played with them at BestBuy and holy crap are they FAT.

And so that is what brought me to the Studio 14z. Sadly its once again FAT for something missing optical drive. I plan to give a REAL WORLD measurements soon. From what I see most of the laptop is 1-1.2". Claiming any kind of .8" is exaggeration.

I owned two studio xps 13 and both were defective.

So J33g, you only have access to ONE ram slot and its 2 gb? and to make it 5 gb will have to buy a 4 GB module right?

j33g - I have read thru and can't find a comment about Recovery/Vista DVD - are they included or (since it doesn't have a CD/DVD drive) does it use a recovery partition? Sorry if this has already been asked but I don't see it - Thanks!!

yeah, I hate recovery partitions. Good for the computer-illiterate I guess

Battery life appears to be 4-5hrs with music and web surfing, maybe throw in some word processing. Anything that involves video will reduce it significantly. Dang flash always kills batteries.

I was at Best Buy yesterday, 14z was there, I tapped the lcd screen area and heard the same rattle as mine. @Goombaypunch hear any noise if you lightly tap the screen? (or when you put the laptop on the table, that is how I first noticed)

While the sound is far from amazing but is very good for laptop speakers. I find the placement of the speakers interesting. Two speakers are on the front bottom with the tweeters in the keyboard area. Overall the two make a good combination.

Yea the recovery partition on this machine REALY sucks because it relies on windows. You access it by hiting f8 at boot and its at the same screen with safe mode. The problem here? anything happens to windows and your screwed. Will be wipping that and making my own backup image with acronis once I get everything set up the way I want. Then just keep acronis boot thumbstick in the laptop backpack and I can recover anytime I want :)

@ j33g I sent the machine back already but I remember checking for that since you mentioned it before and I believe mine was solid, no rattles. Makes me worry that i had to send it back, don't want to get a crappy replacement.

It's advertised that with the 8 cell, you could get 6 and a half hours of battery life. But more reasonable would be like 4 or 5 hours.. :p

yea from what I saw in my brief time with mine it would be around 4.5 hours with wifi on and web browsing / office work at low brightness. that will be even less with movie watching or high brightness. But for its size and low weight the battery life seems excelent. More to come once I get my replacement *sigh*

I was at Best Buy yesterday and the 8-cell system (I think, hard to tell because it doesnt stick out) was still pretty light. It felt only a hair lighter than the Studio 1555 next to it. If it weighed 4.8 lbs, the Studio 1555 is at 5.54, so .6 pounds difference would probably be the slight difference that I felt.

I just ordered at studio 14z last night. for those of you who already ordered and received one, how long did it take for dell to assemble it/ship it out to you?

The estimated delivery date is july 14 for mine, which is over two weeks from now. i had always though that dell's pretty quick on turning around the machines, especially considering my machine is already "in production" according to my order status.

Also, for those who have gotten the 8 cell, are there any visual differences between the 6 cell and 8 cell? does the 8 cell stick out the back, and if not, is it heavier/look different in any other way?

John, these machines were released at the beginning of the month, and they weren't actually shipped to the people who first ordered them until last week. So a couple weeks isnt that long for this new system.

And to answer your question, no the 8 cell is not any larger. It is slightly heavier, but it sits flush in the system just as the 6 cell does.

Alynch, no, the xps batteries will probably not work because this system is different.

One of the selling points for the 14z is the extended life battery that does not stick out the back.

Just went to bestbuy, they indeed have the 14z in stock. I attached a few pictures you can see. It indeed is 8 cell battery, 3 gb ram 1366 x 768 screen but did not indicate if it's LED or LcD, so I'm inclined to say its probably LCD. Price is $749.99 which is decent.

However the only part that I didnt like was, bestbuy is a relatively cool environment. The fan on the 14z was constantly spinning, if i put the laptop to my ear I can hear the fan noise, which means in a quiet room you should notice the noise. Also the air that's being pumped out is hot, not warm but hot. For those of you that dont like heat and noise, go play with it before taking the plunge. So far I have noticed every dell machine equipped with DDR 3 ram has been running noticeably hotter than DDR 2 ram counter part. I also did a search DDR 3 runs noticeably hotter than DDR 2 ram, wonder if it has to do with latency. DDR 3 has to run more cycles at faster speed to go faster than ddr 2, which might have contributed to some heat.

PS: Just a side note...I can't help but to notice two new asus gaming laptop. at 999 you get a 15.6 inches with P7350. 4 GB ram 320gb HD and GTX M 260 video card!! that's with 112 stream processor! totally destroys 9800M GTS.

At 1149 you get the 17.1 inches with P8600 CPU 6 GB!!!!! ddr 3 ram. 500gb HD and also GTX M 260 video card!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! at 1149!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had I not had a gaming desktop already and my 13.3 HP and go to school, I would totally have gotten the asus right there, but dont feel like carrying a 10 pounder up and down the campus...

dammit. I would have ordered the 8 cell had i known. The dell website says that making changes to your order once it's placed is not possible. guess i have to call on monday when they open and see if i can change it from the 6 cell to the 8 cell... hopefully they'll allow it since a battery is more like an "accessory" than a typical computer part.

the one I had was warm, not hot. yes the fan runs alot but this is a powerfull machine ( regular core 2 due) not the cluv procesors that are designed to run cooler although slower. I don't get the fan noise issue, it's not like a 747 spooling up on a runway lol. it is on and I didn't notice it at all even in bed with nothing else on. Yes you can hear it if you listen for it but it is not by any means loud or bothersome.

yea.. the bestbuy ones all advertised with 8 cell battery, hey GOOM, you by any chance know if both the 720p and 900p are LED? I was assuming BB one is LCD cause it was not stated either way as you could see in picture, though picture is pretty. but on dell web site, its either 720 LED or 900LED

My understanding is they are both led. And seeing mine (900p) compared to the best buy one (720p) they were definatly the same size. and I can say that while the 720p was good, the 900p is that much more beautiful. You gotta get that upgrade if you get this machine!

Just some advise to anyone purchasing this. Make sure you get the 50.00 cpu upgrade (to the T6400) the LCD upgrade and the 8 cell battery. Everything from there is personl preference but those three are a must!!!

A screen can be LCD and LED at the same time. LED refers to how the screen is illuminated from behind, either by LED lights or CCFL lamps.

LCD refers to Liquid Crystal Display, which is what the screen is actually made of.

To answer your question, both 720p and 900p are LED backlit, and both are LCD-glossy displays.

I dont think the 1GB of RAM will make a big difference, depending on your needs. The G 105m is slightly better, but not by very much. The 9400m also lets you switch between dedicated and integrated to save battery power.

If screens are important, the 14z will be much nicer with the 900p screen. I also think an 8 cell on the 14z will get better battery life than the DV3t.

Have you thought about the Studio 1555.

You can only switch with the 9400 if there is something in addition to the 9400. The 9400 on its own is pure integrated video.

true true i wonder if 1600 x 900 is too small on a 14 in screen.... dun wanna go blind for the beauty lol..

1366 x 766 set aside, the bestbuy one is a pretty decent deal, that red seems ok and comes with 8 cell battery.. for 749 hmmmmm i know i really dun need anytrhing more than t6500 but i would love to have P8600 hmmmmmmmmm
