Can anyone who has one put it on a scale and see what the true weight is because Dells estimations are usually off. Dell is claiming 4.3lbs while the one on bestbuys site says 5.4lbs. Thats a huge range so I just want to see which one its closer to.

    Thanks

Best Buy might be including the AC adapter. That would explain the discrepancy.

I wasn't talking about switching between two different chips, I mean switching between the integrated and dedicated cores of the 9400m. This isn't a normal integrated GPU chip. See below...

    From Notebookcheck.com

"The chipset supports Hybrid-SLI (HybridPower) in conjunction with some GeForce 9x00M cards like the 9600M GT. HybridPower is a technique to choose between the integrated and dedicated graphics core, if performance or battery runtime is needed. Up to now the user has to use a tool to switch between the GPUs. (in Windows Vista, XP is not supported and MacOs needs a reboot according to Nvidia - at time of announcement)."

Yup, i've taken the liberty to higlight the relevant bit.

This means that you can only choose between either running the 9400 (which is integrated) or running another dedicated GPU, in the example the 9600M GT.

Hey bro, 9400m is integrated only, no dedicated core on this baby, but it does allow manufacture to add on a dedicated gpu (on top of 9400m) if they desire. I had two xps 13 which both had 9400, and in both cases, they share their video memory from the main ram. :)

You're not understanding what I said. I said the 9400 does not have an integrated and a dedicated core. It is only an integrated solution. Just one that happens to be better performing than Intel's.

I went to bestbuy and checked it out. Its a great machine. I tested out the sound and it was very good for a laptop. I dont think it was running the soundblaster software. I dont know how necessary that software is. Anyone know?
The laptop is very lite, the screen (even though it was 720p) looked great and it did not run hot and I didnt hear the fan, (although I was in a noisy bestbuy).

Any thoughts about the soundblaster software additional for 25 dollars? Is it a rip or would it be beneficial for someone who wants the best sound? Can that software be downloaded elsewhere?

I agree. It is a great machine in person and a great value at Best Buy. Too bad they don't offer the upgraded LED screen there.

I price the same exact one at dell, it would cost 918 dollars vs 749 bestbuy one, albeit 89 bucks of it is on the notorious norton antivirus..system hog. Damn tempting with 8 cell battery, just no bluetoth no backlit keyboard and no bothersome touch controlled media strip which is perfect cause I won't have to fetch driver for windows 7 for it but 1366 x 768... arghhhhhhhhhhhhh

I think because some people have said eurgh, 1366x768 then the masses have followed. 1366x768 is perfectly fine for many things. I personally prefer a bit higher resolution on a 14" machine, but not by much.

sorry, its not bad, I guess it would be about the same as 1280 x 800 on a 13.3 in screen, just wish they have the 1600 x 900

I have read that the 900p screen is better in more than just in terms of resolution, but brighter/better contrast etc...

That's not due to the fact that it's 900p, I believe it's due to the fact that the 720p displays are manufactured by another company.

Well, for whatever the cause, the 900p screen on this computer is better than the 720p screen :D

Hence why I said, its better in more than just in terms of resolution. So, there is indeed reason to 'eurgh' at only the 720p screen being offered in Best Buy... if you want the best one the machine has to offer, that is.

So they were in fact relating that arghhhhhh to the resolution, nothing more.

It's personal preference. I myself like something around the 1400 wide mark myself on a screen that size; but my inspiron that has 1366x768 is still perfectly usable, if not a little larger than I like.

Where is this information about the 900p screen actually having better specs and made by a different company than the 720p screen? Not that I doubt you, but I have been following the 14z threads religiously and do not remember seeing this info. I would be very interested to read the source. Anyone?

I have not seen the 14z 900p in person, so I cannot offer an objective comparison. All I can say is that I personally have the 14z 720p and am very happy with it.

    720p screenshot
This is only good for comparison of screen real estate. LCD panel quality cannot be judged from a screenshot, and must instead be judged by a photograph. The same camera with the same settings must be used to have an accurate comparison between the two LCD panels. Even then the settings on the camera may favour one panel over the other in a way that is not witnessed when observed in real life. You really have to have both LCD panels side by side in real life to accurately compare them.

FYI, my 14z is for sale, see NBR marketplace. Only reason is I can't get away from my macbook air so it hasn't been used at all. I was hoping 14z would be thinner. Instead of returning to Dell I thought someone here might want it sooner than later.

Well after considerable searching I have been unable to verify or substantiate these claims that the 900p screen is superior in any way other than higher resolution. So unless one of you can source your references, I am going to label that missinformation.

Label it mis-information if you like, to be honest I've not done more than a quick search to see if I could find the information again. I might be getting confused between this model and another, but I definitely read it about a Dell notebook. Perhaps it was the Studio 15. Meh, in any case, I can't be fussed to look for it again, take it or leave that information, it's not like I would be offended either way.

However could I ask that images posted in the forums are kept to a reasonable size to avoid the horizontal scrolling that will happen as a result.

Fragilexx, I'm pretty sure you're thinking of the Studio 1555. The 720p Samsung display is commonly regarded as being of lesser quality than the 900p and 1080p displays from AU Optronics.

Mastershroom is right, the 720p apparently has a wide array of manufacturers (worst being samsung). However, the 900/1080p is only made by AUO.

Be interesting if any 14z owners could post their display info; even just seeing the difference in model numbers should tell us if they are made by different companies (i.e. whether they are of a different pattern like ST106 vs LGA4001).

I'm talking about model numbers not pictures. It's so difficult to tell how good a monitor is by looking at pictures, unless every single thing about them is the same, i.e. the laptop is in the same place, the lighting is the same, the camera is at the same angle and elevation.

    I know that.

To be more helpful, I tracked down the pictures I had in mind, and it looks like they were referring to the 720p screens being different depending on whether you purchase from Best Buy or Dell, which is interesting, but doesn't speak to the model of the 900p.

Since that is a thread in which I was a contributer I can safely say that the difference in screens based on location of purchase has not been substantiated. All that is proven is that there are at least 2 types of 720p panels.

hey, first time poster here. i received my studio 14z about a week ago and love everything about it, right down to the midnight blue color. the color is excellent, but it is MUCH darker than the blue advertised on dell's website, so i thought i'd post this so that anyone considering buying the system could see it in its true form. the lighter blue seen around the edges is just a reflection of the blue sky outdoors. the whole surface actually appears a bit darker than the blue seen in the center of the image, and is generally less gray. it's a beautiful color, isn't a fingerprint magnet, and is classy alternative to the standard black look.
