So I'm really not sure what I want to do here. I have decided that I will be going desktop only now but I need to upgrade. Right now I have a 780 Ti SC ACX @ 1150MHz and it plays most games fine at 1080p but it's definitely getting a bit long in the tooth. I don't currently have a monitor, just a 1080p 60hz TV that I game on.
So here is what I'm wondering... Should I get a 1070 and a 50-55 inch 4K TV or should I get a 1080 and continue to use my TV while I save for a 4K TV, or should I just wait and see what happens with Vega and if it forces Nvidia's hand (lower prices, drop of a 1080 Ti, etc)?
I'm also still not sure if I want to keep gaming on the TV or actually get a monitor. The high end 4K monitors are pretty pricy while getting a 4K TV would benefit more than just my computer.

I would say 980ti on the cheap and then jump to the 1080ti.Ethrem likes this.

Yeah the resale value might be an issue, but it will pretty much sell for what you get the 980ti for right now (assuming around $300-$350).
And from some of the game benchmarks that i have seen its pretty much neck and neck with the 980ti, only surpassing by a few frames in certain games.
Keep an eye on this : http://www.evga.com/products/Produc...=GeForce+900+Series+Family&chipset=GTX+980+Ti
Last week they had a 980ti hybrid for $350.Ethrem likes this. -

that's what I would do. Go for the highest 1080 you can get for now and do the monitor/TV later -
Ugh! I'm getting so impatient! I've got 1500 dollars worth of credit I can use and while being responsible is all well and good, I've been waiting a long time to upgrade my desktop...

1080 might fetch you the best resale value later on, since they arent all that easily available.
-
Yeah but when the 1080 Ti or Vega come, everyone with them will flood the market anyway lol. I guess I should just be patient. It's only a few more months. My Ti runs everything right now. I was just planning on upgrading to a 4K TV.hmscott likes this.

Yeah, thats why im not jumping the gun as well I already made the mistake with my 980 SLI on my desktop. And my friend who waited for the 980ti is a happy camper still.
Im waiting for my friend to get the 1080 Strix and then to test it with my system in the Razer Core. That will decide where i want to go.Ethrem likes this. -
nobody knows if there will even be a 1080 Ti this time around. alot of signs point to it not being released -- mainly no competition.
most of the 980 Ti vs 1070 reviews i've seen are putting them at about equal FPS-wise. the 1070 has a small lead in a couple of games, but the 980 Ti beats it out in alot more titles. that might change with new drivers, but nobody will know for sure until it happens.
if i were u, my priority would probably to get a new monitor to game on because u already have a decent system. u could get a 4K monitor right now and it'll still look very nice when u downscale the resolution in games to 1080p. i'd wait it out a little longer to see how the market plays out and then make my decision because the good 1080's are still scarce as hell. 4K TV's go on sale all the time, so that would be the least of my worries.
if a 1080 Ti doesn't come out then i might sell my Strix 1080 OC and get a watercooled 1080. -
Are the gaming monitor display's HDR capable yet? I know some TV's are, but I haven't seen it mentioned for new monitors.
I would wait for full HDR support before laying out a bunch of $$$ for a new monitor - but you will need a Pascal GPU to output HDR as well.Ethrem likes this. -

I guess I'll have to see it in person to decide if it's worth it or if I should just pick up a 500-600 Samsung.hmscott likes this.

The AMD pre-release teases for the RX480, and the release had some side by side standard vs HDR displays, and HDR was clearly superior even through low res youtube video... I will see if I can find them.

killkenny1 Too weird to live, too rare to die.
Personally I would go for a 1080(Ti) with a 21:9 screen, but that depends on you - how much can you wait, how fast can you save up, and how much money do you want spend.
-
My financial situation isn't the best. I have roughly 300 a month left for miscellaneous items after the bills and groceries are paid each month and my credit cards are high interest so I try not to carry too high of a balance for too long. Realistically I could save for a few months and then just charge it to get my 1% back from Capital One but I'm not always that disciplined heh.
My desk can certainly accomodate a widescreen monitor, hell the table is 47x23in and the desk has a built in space for my tower under it so it could actually accomodate a lot, it's just the practicality of it and whether or not I'd actually sit in front of the desk or just hook the HDMI up to my TV as usual lolkillkenny1, hmscott and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -

Yeah I looked into it and with a few exceptions, enabling HDR mode increases input lag sometimes 3 fold on all but the most expensive TVs. There's no way I'm coming up with 3K for an LG OLED.
I like this one though

Maybe I should get the new TV first, pay it off, then when that's paid off the new cards should be out or right around the corner. -
That's not an HDR ready TV...there's a whole lotta those to choose from

If I were you I'd just get the 1080 first, TV later. You'll be wishing you had a 1080 if you buy the 1070. If you're anything like me, your thirst for PC hardware will not be quenched with the 1070!
-
There are new Sony 4k HDR TV's for a wide range of prices, you don't need to go full OLED
https://www.sony.com/electronics/tv/t/televisions?type=4k_hdr
Make sure it actually is HDR, and not HD only
-
Yeah that's pretty much what I'm thinking. I'm pretty much never happy now that I've had top of the line. Previously I always owned GT cards and such but going from 260M to 880M and 780 Ti to 980M, it would be difficult to go to a 1070 knowing I could have a 1080.
I have a Sony KDL-55W802A which isn't a bad TV at all (one or the lowest input lags ever measured too) and I just found out the blur when using it as a monitor is because it's not set on graphics mode, I just need to get the panel replaced under warranty because it has some vertical banding which is common with this model. Very distracting on a white background.
Yeah I did some more research. If I was going to get anything, it would probably be this one

Maybe it's best to go with a 1080 instead, but I just keep thinking a 1080ti with the gaming meat of a Titan X(P), but $300-$400 cheaper might be out there waiting to take out $

A 1080 Ti does seem likely after Vega comes out but not before. The 780 Ti is doing fine for now. I've wanted Android TV anyway so getting that TV might be a great investment.hmscott likes this.

Isn't it coming up on the season for the next year TV's to release?
HDR10 compliant seems to be the one to get...

It was the search URL I was speaking to
The TV didn't get very good review, except for the recommendation for gaming use.
And, then it occurred to me new TV's must be releasing for the holiday season that might have better specs, not just Sony.
Hence the google search for 2017 HDR10 TV's

Problem is that I need all my HDMI ports on the left side of the TV and Sony is one of the only ones that does this. The W802A got a bad rap too and I love it other than the fact I have to get the panel replaced but that's why I got an extended warranty on it. Android TV is a big plus for me because it would mean I could stop using my Xbox One for streaming and cut down on the power bill a bit.hmscott likes this.

If there are no OLED tv, I recommend waiting or getting a monitor instead. 1070 nor 1080 is good enough for 4k imo. Not sure about 1080 ti. It might be called 1180.
Whats your current monitor?Last edited: Aug 17, 2016Ethrem likes this. -
My current monitor is a Sony Bravia KDL-55W802A LED-LCD passive 3D TV. I don't have a real monitor at all and haven't for years.
I was thinking about just running the 4K TV at 1080p. It's a 2x2 pixel split so with the right settings, it should be just slightly more blurry than native 1080p and not noticeable in games.tgipier likes this. -
then a 1070 would be fine for that. No chance for OLED?Ethrem likes this.

Only OLED TVs are LG and they are like 3K. There's no way I'm dropping that kind of money, it would take me 10 months to save just for the display.
-
Fair enough, can you push it any further on 780 TI? Your current tv is 1080P?
1070 is not worth it imo. 1080 maybe but its overpriced. Titan x is for larger resolutions...Ethrem likes this. -
My 780 Ti will probably do for awhile, it's just noisy and runs hot. I could probably fix that by taking off the ACX cooler, adjusting the fins, and repasting, but it's not a great chip anyway. The drivers kicked the boost up to 1150 from the stock 1072 from 362 on but it likes to sit around 85 and 87C. The highest I ever got it to finish 3dmark at was 1200 I think. It's got coil whine too. So yeah. Sitting at my TV I dont hear it much but if I got a real monitor and actually used my desk for something other than a large table it wouldn't be bearable.
-
I would suggest buying a second hand 980Ti. On par with the 1070 (sometimes slower, sometimes faster), but for a much cheaper price. The 1080 is simply way overpriced. **** that. It's what I did, and I haven't regretted it at all so far. I might upgrade to Volta next year, and if I do it will be at a very small loss, instead of losing a small fortune if I would have bought the 1080.

The problem is that this guy right here - http://www.evga.com/Products/Product.aspx?pn=08G-P4-5173-KR - smashes the 980 Ti and the 980 Ti is going for right around the same price. The 980 Ti really falls behind in DX12 titles too.
-
Look around on /r/hardswap, the average Ti there goes for about $320. Yesterday I saw an 980Ti Hybrid being sold for a measly $350. Also, the way you're putting it, makes it seem like the 980Ti is a horrible, slow ass pos card. You and I both know it definitely isn't, and yes the 1070 is faster, but not by a very big degree. I mean, even at 1440p the Ti can often be seen as overkill.
Btw, you're gaming on 1080p 60hz right? -
i was lucky and got my Strix 1080 OC before the prices jumped up.
i could sell it right now and probably won't lose any/much money -- possibly even make a little bit of change. new ones are going for around $800 on eBay at the moment. -
That's exactly my point. Remember when the 980 was released? The price was around the €500 mark (correct me if I'm wrong). Now, it's successor costs almost double that. The 970? Around €350. It's successor? Starting around the €480 mark. ****ing disgusting.Ethrem likes this.

Will you want HDR in your next TV, and what is HDR10 vs. Dolby Vision?
"Televisions keep getting new and buzzy sounding features every year -- and the latest of these is HDR. But what exactly is this? And is there already a format war that could create winners and losers like Blu-ray vs HD DVD? CNET's David Katzmaier explains HDR with Jeff Bakalar, and Mike Sorrentino brings in your questions in this excerpt from Open_Tab."

I have bad luck with tech though. Buying used seems like a mistake for me. I'll have to keep looking around I guess.
Well I guess I'm going to wait for prices to come down. Video card in a month or so unless I find something for a steal then TV around Christmas.
Was looking at monitors today and ummm... They are all really expensive and they all suck (G-Sync displays). People have a ton of issues with all of them. Amazon has a 27in Acer on sale but it's a 4K TN panel despite the description saying it's IPS and it's still 500 bucks.TomJGX, 1nstance, houstoned and 1 other person like this. -

yeah, they've been pretty abundant as of late.
the only ones that are still hard to find are the higher model EVGA ones and it's been a while since i've seen the Strix OC back in stock.
i'm so tempted to buy a Gigabyte 1080 Waterforce because it's the only one that i've seen hit a 2200+ core clock. i hate it's orange color scheme though. that's the only thing that is stopping me from getting that one. i know the first thing i'd do with that card is rip it apart and paint it lol. i'll just keep waiting for the EVGA FTW Hybrid or a 1080 Ti. -
Yeah the hybrid is exactly what I'd want. My case has plenty of fans, I could just mount the radiator in the back and have both my h100i and my video card running exhaust. Toss another fan in the front. It would be perfect.houstoned likes this.
