pretty nice deal on a Asus Strix 1070: http://slickdeals.net/f/9073651-asus-geforce-gtx-1070-rog-strix-1860-boost-clock-jet-com-390-14

for anyone wondering about the new Strix cooler, it's a total beast. keeps my 1080 very cool (40's-50's after hours of GTA V or ROTTR) and does so at a whisper. it's so quiet that i have to look through my case's window to see if the fans are even on sometimes. that's with a more aggressive custom fan curve i set through MSI Afterburner.

i used code "shop10" to get $50 off from Jet.com and saved an additional $16-$17 bucks from opting out of their free return policy. -
It's ****ing insane that we have to to pay X80Ti prices for an X80 product.

i just got around to installing my Hybrid and i'm pretty damn disappointed so far.
it overclocks like crap. i was only able to get it to +95/+550 and it was really struggling to even maintain 2075MHz. anything over +95 on the core clock became unstable. my Asus Strix OC easily maintained 2101MHz right out of the box without touching a single thing besides maxing out the power % and temp thresholds. for some reason, i saw that the Heaven benchmark was only using about 84%-86% power.
i'm kind of debating if i should box it up and send it back or selling it instead of my Strix OC 1080. -
I'd RMA the card. -
-
-
In this case he hasn't had it long enough to be forced to do a repair RMA, instead he should be able to box it up and return it.
@houstoned it seems that there are few cards that go over 2050mhz and if you have one it's really not that much of a win anyway as the FPS isn't increased greatly.
You could keep swapping Hybrid cards until you find a "good" one, but that might be a lot of effort for not much return.
The win in temperatures seems to come from Open Loop or full waterblock cards like the Zotac Arctic Storm, or other custom solutions.
The temperatures from those cards is really low, and completely cuts out the frequency bouncing.
Hybrids do better than 100% air-cooled, but they aren't completely silent and don't cool down as far as the pure water cooled solutions.
I think unless you want to invest a lot of time and effort, I'd stick with that Strix card - it's got a great boost

RMA is a part of the process of returning a product in order to receive a refund, replacement, or repair during the product's warranty period.
And the Hybrid boost clock is far greater than that of the Arctic. Navigate to 4:50 in the following video to see:

If they are inside the return period, usually 7-30 days, I suggest they "return" their item to the seller for a refund or a swap for another unit.
When I "return" something to the store, I don't say I'd like to "RMA" this, I say I want to "return" it. "RMA" isn't part of the language used when "returning" something for a refund or replacement from a seller.
If they are outside the "return" to seller time, then I switch to using "RMA", as that's the language the maker will use when taking something for repair or replacement.
It's a not so fine distinction that helps avoid confusion.
Individual cards vary in their OC and boost results.
The water cooled card has better temps, so better results for the OC and boost it can sustain.
A better OC and boost card with full water should do best.
It's a the 100% water-cooled solution vs Hybrid vs Air-cooled difference I was pointing out for temperatures, not the individual card results.
When cards are so close bounding around in the 2050-2150 range you can find cards in all 3 cooling categories with similar boost numbers, but the actual sustained performance improves as the cooling solution improves.
I like the full waterblock cooling.Last edited: Sep 21, 2016houstoned likes this. -
just ordered an EK Vardar F4-120ER fan for my Hybrid's radiator. it should be here in about 2 days.
i've been getting weird screen tears/artifacts and random black screens lately. my GTA V randomly crashes sometimes as well. i didn't experience any of these problems with my MSI Founders Edition or my Asus STRIX OC. i'm probably going to be RMA'ing this Hybrid. hopefully my next one OC's alot better as well. -

No idea why you're chasing those few extra MHz. Even 100mhz won't make a noticeable difference. You're talking 1-2fps at best. Why even bother?
My gaming X does 2100mhz. Even if I got a water blocked 2200mhz card I be spending a stupid amount of money for 2 fps. It's silly.
Save the money, sell your 1080 and get a Pascal Titan X or a 1080 Ti of more performance is what you're after.houstoned, 1nstance, TomJGX and 1 other person like this. -
I agree. Spending that much for a few additional FPS isn't worth it, if your goal is to have the best performance : dollar ratio. If you're rich and just want to go bonkers, who cares.
The 1080Ti should be out by the end of this year or early 2017. I'm waiting for the 1180 next Summer. -
plus, i'm able to sell my Asus Strix OC for more than what i bought it for. even in gently used condition. my EVGA 1080 FTW Hybrid only cost me like $670 and my girl got $60 something bucks of Jet.com credit because she complained about how they handled the package. my girl was home and heard them just throw the box at my front door. they didn't even knock/ring the doorbell or get a signature.
i only started chatting up EVGA customer support after the random graphic tears/artifacts, black screens, and games crashing. that, i will not accept.
received my EK Vardar F4-120ER fan earlier than expected:
i have it plugged into my motherboard and controlled by the Asus AI Suite Fan Expert. -
And yes if you are getting tearing and stuff, the card might be damaged.. Surprised how the package was delivered in such an haphazard manner... How did the conversation with EVGA go?

the EK Vardar F4-120ER did drop my temps about 2*c though. like right now, my GPU is sitting at 26*c to 27*c while typing this. compared to around 28* to 30*c with the stock EVGA fan.
EVGA chat customer support went as well as any other major company i've dealt with. they were understanding and told me to troubleshoot it a little more. if the problems still persist then i can go through with an RMA. i've been playing with it for the last couple of days and the problems are still there. it keeps crashing while i'm in the middle of an important mission on GTA V. *shakes fist* -
How much did that fan cost btw? Also are EK the waterblock company? Didn't know their fans were that good! -

just installed the new Hybrid 1080 last night and i'm very happy with this one.
finally was able to join the 2200mhz Club! there was some artifacts and screen tears during benchmarks, so i don't consider it a stable OC. but i am happy to see that this new GPU was able to peak at 2202mhz.
this is a screenshot of the highest stable OC i was able to obtain last night. +175 core offset was able to peak at 2189mhz and then bounced around 2177mhz to 2164mhz when the card got up to it's max temp of 43*c - 44*c. 100% fan speed on the radiator fan and GPU's fan:
i will be testing it in game later on. hopefully this one doesn't keep crashing like the Hybrid i'm about to box up and ship back to EVGA.

it was around 4-5AM when i did all of this and i was taking pictures of the benchmark results to compare them. -
just got done playing GTA V for over an hour and there was no crashes or micro stutters.
so far so good. -
It looks awesome so far, played around 4 hours of it..

i've never been able to get into Battlefield games for some reason. -
Jokes aside, join EA access, you get 10 hours to play and you can decide if you want to buy it..
