I have been crazy busy with work and a project with Prema.

The Z490 Dark is amazing. Better than the ASUS board (as was the X299 Dark).

GeForce RTX 3080 and RTX 3090 with a curved package - why water and air coolers have such a hard time | Investigative igorslab.de | Today

Even a package always shows tension and certain height tolerances, so everything is still completely normal. However, NVIDIA specifies a tolerance range of up to 0.3 mm, which is also very high compared to Turing. We remember: there were water blocks from German premium manufacturers who only used thermal paste between the RAM modules and the cooler base instead of the thermal pads (<0.15 mm). The excellent results are known and have also been proven by my tests.

I have to totally concur with Brother @Mr. Fox on the Asus boards. I'm on a Formula board as we speak because my Extreme only has LED lights. :D
And was literally sitting idle for 3 hours as I was testing memory for someone else. Shut down and reset for benching session and nothing, no power. WTH! Messed with it for about an hour and called it a day. And thought about my conversation with Brother Fox. Which I do publicly apologize for going against the grain! :D

Board is already half way back to Asus. We shall see what they find or don't find.

Man, so sorry to hear that. That really sucks. Hopefully, they will pull through for you on the warranty and send a new board that you can sell like I did the Rampage board that they replaced. (That's how I paid for the X299 Dark.)

Did the CPU survive? I really believe that the dead ASUS Z490 Maximus mobo that I returned for a refund killed the 10900KF that Intel covered under warranty. I can't prove it, but too big of a coincidence for both to die simultaneously. I tried another CPU in the Maximus and it would not power on, and the 10900KF that came out of the Maximus was deader than a doornail (wouldn't boot in the the Z490 Dark).

I've always used EVGA boards for my personal builds except that time I went with a Taichi.....yeah, I won't be doing that again. I wouldn't be against giving the newer versions of the Aorus boards a try since they beefed up their VRMs and build quality.

Everything else is working good. CPU is on my Formula board which i'm typing from now since MC did not have any Darks in stock. They did have a FTW though, but not really jazzed about that board.

I think your right about it taking out the CPU considering it could have taken out the PSU as well. (But would be covered under their 10 year warranty one would hope.)

No smoke no popping no anything, just shut down like normal, removed water block and put my ss block on and hit the power and nothing. I did give it a once over the the Microscope, but didn't find any burnt or missing parts. Didn't get a chance to really look as that rma took all of 20 minutes (after my hour of trying to trouble shoot it)(My real mistake was I did not buy the Microcenter Warranty like a dummy! Since they didn't have the board I could have gotten my money back) to complete and they sent me a shipping label.( of course I had to pre pay for it) I threw it in a generic box and dropped it off at FedEx. It wont get there until next week.

Could anyone point me in the right direction for really good and inexpensive 120MM radiator fans? I’d prefer all black with no RGB if possible. The EKWB fans are really expensive. And I can’t see spending $120-$200 dollars for just fans.

I need (6) fans in total, I really don’t mind noise. I like performance above all. I’ll be running (2) 360MM Corsair XR5 slim rads. So I think using only pull configuration will be sufficient.

I am not an expert in 120mm fans. If it were up to me, I’d probably strap on some bulk cheap Apevia fans if they were laying around my house.

I really like the XPSC Xinruilian fans I am using on my MO-RA 360 (18 in total). They move a lot of air and running full blast they are not very loud. They are well made and should hold up well. Some of the extra-cheap fans don't move much air (in spite of being noisy) and are not very durable. In my opinion, these offer unbeatable bang for the buck.

I know of some industrial grade 120mm Noctua fans that are pricey, but boy do they output a lot of air: https://www.amazon.com/Focused-NF-F12-iPPC-3000-PWM/dp/B00KFCRATC/?tag=akshatblog198-20

They're really good fans that have a max airflow of about 109.9 CFM. They're industrial grade and made to last hence the high price tag. I'd get them when they're on sale since you can get a pretty good deal on them, and by that I mean you can get them for under $20 a piece.
    upload_2020-11-12_18-18-40.png

There's also a 140mm version for $2 more and it has a max airflow of about 158.5 CFM.

Nvidia Says Feature Similar to AMD's Smart Access Memory Tech is Coming to AmpereNvidia levels the playing field tomshardware.com

If Nvidia has things it's way, AMD's latest new performance-boosting technology for RX 6000 "Big Navi" graphics cards might not be a huge advantage, after all.

According to a statement Nvidia gave to Gamer's Nexus, the company says it will soon enable a feature similar to AMD's Smart Access Memory (SAM) tech on its Ampere graphics cards. In fact, Nvidia already has the feature working in its labs.

Additionally, Nvidia claims its feature will work equally well with Intel and AMD processors and can use the PCIe 3.0 bus, while AMD has already said that its solution requires an AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor, X570 motherboard, and Radeon RX 6000 GPU to work.

I use Gentle Typhoon 2150rpm's personally, I have one fan that isnt and the noise is irritating at times.

Thinking about grabbing a faster fan for my exhaust on the TU-150 maybe a faster Typhoon but I think I need something a bit different for that purpose

Yeah I think I will be ok with cheaper lower static pressure fans. I’m using very slim radiators only 30MM thick, so I don’t need a ton of pressure to get the hot air off of them. The Corsair XR5 360MM is a rebranded hardware labs nemesis GTS.

I will eventually get some nice fans. But a lot of these brand name high static pressure fans are $20-$30 dollars each. That’s $240 to $360 dollars in just fans for cooling some $70 dollar radiators lol.

They are normally 4 or 5 times more. I saw them elsewhere for about $23 each and I paid like $15 each about a year ago. I decided to check Titan Rig and glad I did. Amazing price. Definitely go push/pull at that cost... dirt cheap. And, they really are great fans. No LED/RGB crap is also a plus.

LEDs come on, Q-code 00 with no other evidence of life. Thankfully my Apex went tits up during the NewEgg RMA window and I did not have to waste time farting around with the dumb-dumbs at ASUS. Their warranty service blows. Sadly, it also killed my CPU. Thankfully, Intel covered it under warranty. They had no stock available so they wired me a refund.

Qcode "00" happens if you change "VCCST Gated" in Tweaker's Paradise. It works the first time but when you try to reset it back, you get 00.
I think another one of those PLL Trim LN2 settings also gives 00 if you try to change it and then change it back. I forgot if it's DMI or Core PLL.

If that happens, you need to power off the computer, unplug the power supply plug from the PSU, then hold Clear CMOS for 30 seconds.

If you get no fans spinning at all (like the power button did absolutely nothing, except a very brief flash of a LED somewhere, but NO fans), that's usually a short somewhere and the PSU isn't starting the system (Happened to me once when I overtightened a video card X-bracket).

Wow that didn't take long at all lol. Thank god Nvidia isn't pulling the same anti-consumer BS that AMD is pulling with their requirement to use only 5000 series CPUs and 500 series motherboards. Nvidia is making it work on all hardware lol.

The mobo was dead... totally... tried all of those things, and it took out the CPU. It happened with no change in BIOS settings. I had been using it all day and went to reboot to switch to a different Windows installation and when it went to the momentary power off state that was the end of the Apex. I did the BIOS flashback at least a half dozen times and it would complete and immediately return to the 00 state. The CPU LED on the mobo was also a solid red.

That was my third and last ASUS motherboard. All three had reliability problems, so I am done with them for good. ASUS rocks at BIOS, but their products are just too unreliable. EVGA all the way. Better products, better warranty, better performance. Can't hate that.

I couldn't say about the fans spinning since I do not operate any fans from the motherboard. I use a discrete fan controller that is powered externally to run my 18 fans on the MO-RA3 360. Lamptron Power Controller CF525

They're bulk are pulled from display systems, etc. But you can get decent deals checking there once in awhile.

Arctic p series does alright, I think can daisy chain with the right version, no rgb, etc. Check reviews on it, though.

They are probably different tech. The Microsoft resize BAR is driver and firmware related and likely implemented. It allows the access to the whole memory. But it takes a firmware update on the card and has to be implemented on the motherboard and turned on there as well. AMD never said you have to turn it on in the motherboard bios. This makes me think they are not the same.

AMD is likely using the standard they created with either 1) CCIX (cache coherent interconnect for accelerators), or 2) infinity architecture. Those are similar, with the first one being open for companies to sign on, implement, and adopt (see Intel's CXL). The second is a faster version of infinity fabric used for their datacenter products. The first one is Intel's fault for not supporting, and Intel's fault for not having pcie 4.0. The latter, well pcie 4.0 phy supporting and tons of money.

    It's not anti- consumer, though.

Edit: also, remember just because your competitor says you are doing something someway does not mean they are correct.

Yes, for sure. Especially so since using 5 fans would leave a bare 120mm x 120mm spot on one radiator.

RDNA 2 consoles ray trace below minimum PC ray trace settings available. This is likely why we didn't hear much from AMD on the ray tracing front for their new GPUs.

Edit: But ray tracing in this game looks really good. So maybe just a terrible example since it was an Nvidia title.

I was seriously getting worried with the claims of 2080Ti performance level out of a series X? That video seems to put that to rest real quick.

I can’t play on console, I suck so bad with a controller. I just can’t aim.

So the 2060 Super is actually performing roughly the same, running native 4K.

I thought the performance claims on the new consoles sounded outlandish. My suspicions have been confirmed.

Consoles typically have the performance of a mid range gaming PC at the time of their release.

Same here. Nor do I have any desire to gain skill with one. I hate consoles and controllers. They suck. I am lethal with a keyboard and mouse. About the only thing I can do OK with using a controller is Mortal Kombat.

I am open to having a compelling reason to change my mind, but I am always extremely skeptical of anything AMD brings to the table, especially with GPUs. I have had nothing but horrible experiences with everything they have sold since they bought out ATI. I used to be an ATI fanboy years ago. It has been a super long time since they have offered anything compelling in graphics cards, and I have found them extremely unreliable and prone to failure. The last good notebook GPU I owned from Team Red was before the 6970M was released. From the 6000-series forward it has been nothing but rubbish as far as I am concerned. I am going to have to see a mountain of evidence before I am willing to embrace an AMD GPU. There is no way in hell I would consider being an early adopter. I'll gladly watch others spend their money and see what they accomplish (or don't accomplish) before reaching for my wallet.

This is when the first spark of hate for AMD GPUs began for me: https://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/2017247

I had to go waaaayyyy back in my 3DMark history to find this, LOL. Seems even longer ago than it was.

Bro, I know how you like to dive into the nuts and bolts of things and if the 6000 series has the same powerplay mod capabilities as the 5000 series, that is where the fun of overclocking is. My recent OC'ing experience with AMD is limited to the R7 but it did give me another set of challenges to overcome versus Nvidia's locked down vBIOS. Plus the 6900XT might be the first AMD card to challenge some overclockers with the 3090 in the right hands. I am very curious to see how far I will be able to push that card with "normal" water cooling. I am keeping an open mind on this generation of GPUs from both companies.

‘Ditto, I’m extremely curious for the real reviews but if RT performance isn’t up to snuff that’s a deal breaker for me. 3090 on WoW ultra 10 RT enabled 4K is holding at 52-70fps.

Yeah, we both know their RT performance, even best case through synthetic benchmarks, won't compete with Nvidia's implementation. Is that a factor for me? No, I only game on 1440p ultrawides and I rarely enable RT in games. For you, it will.

Since I'm reluctant to play games at 4K (I need 144hz or higher, no going back now), I think this generation of AMD will suit me very well and I honestly would have never thought that in the past. Plus at least we know the 6900XT will be AMD's top card for this generation, we can't say that with Nvidia. With a 3080 Ti and Titan card rumored, Nvidia is stepping all over themselves and early buyers.

Yes, I am definitely keeping an open mind and I will follow your results with great curiosity and interest. I always say that I don't practice brand loyalty, and that is very true. I am quick to forgive people and live by the Golden Rule (we all need forgiveness, especially me,) but I am very slow to forgive companies that produce garbage and screw me. I will gladly embrace AMD if they give me a compelling reason to by ticking all of the boxes on my list. They are simply going to have to overcome the mental block their decade+ of abject failure has created in my mind and soften the hardness of my heart toward them that their massive incompetence has created. Nothing would make me happier, in the end, than being to be able to kick Intel and NVIDIA to the curb. I have been mostly happy with their results, but I am rapidly growing weary of both of their stupidass shenanigans.

I am right there with you on the ray tracing. It is visually better, but by a small measurement, and I do not need any ray tracing at all to enjoy the little bit of gaming that I do once in a while. Gaming is of modest importance and value to me. It's not as worthless to me as G-stink though. At least I can see a little bit of value in the ray tracing, whereas G-stink (and FreeStync) is totally worthless to me.

The only thing that keeps me interested in computers is overclocking and the future of my interest hangs by a thread on how that turns out. Therein lies AMDs greatest challenge. No matter how great stock performance turns out to be, if I can't overclock the crap out of it to get more and do something remarkably greater than the masses I will have no pleasure in owning the product. I am praying for great things in the overclocking realm so I will have something I can care about.

Factor in what an absolutely ludicrous s-show Windows 10 has become and the future of being a PC enthusiast hangs by a thread for me. The one entity that has the greatest potential for destroying everything I care about in relation to computers is the cluster of dumbass losers in Redmond. They are on a massive losing streak and failing hard. Their fiasco makes Intel's failures seem minor and inconsequential. My contempt for them is beyond measure because their nonsense is deliberate and unworthy of any honor or respect.

The last Asus board I had, a Z390 Strix, failed and fried the 9900k that it was paired with so I have similar feelings (although it turned out for the best since it moved me over to AM4 and I can get a 5950x to replace my 3950x whenever they're actually available).

If my year+ using a 5700xt is any indication, you will be more than happy. If I had not upgraded with specific targets in mind with 4k and RT as priorities, I would still be using my 5700xt with my ZR30W (2560x1600) display. The only problem I had were occasional BSODs with browser hardware acceleration (especially watching YT videos) enabled which lasted even into September 2020 across two different brands of 5700xt. I haven't had a single crash since switching to Nvidia. If RT wasn't a priority and my game playing priorities lay primarily based upon WoW and always running it full tilt, I'd probably (and still may) resume Team Red enjoyment.

I tried a Samsung G7 before returning it and my laptop has a 144hz panel and I'm still trying to get all the hype with "mega frames." Smoother? Yah, but nothing that would make it the top priority. When I had the G7, I purposely turned down the settings on WoW to have it blasting 150-200 frames everywhere and used it for a couple days and walked away indifferent. But then again I'm the same guy who runs his various gaming mouses stock. But like you said, based on your 1440p Ultrawide 144hz min, any of the new cards are going to be excellent for you so you can sit back and pick and choose.

And Nvidia absolutely isn't able to dole out cards like they would have preferred (Coming Spring 2021! SUPER variants! You're welcome....clap please) with AMD being so magnificently disruptive in the best way. I love it.

No power, no fans, no psu fans, no gpu fans, no clicks no anything. You know how manufactures show you just the LED's on a motherboard for display, well that's what this board was doing. You flip the power supply switch and the LED's come on, then touch any of the 4 buttons to kick the board on and nothing.

    Anyone ever buy from formulaMOD?

They sell parts so dirt cheap!

I found solid copper 360MM round tube radiators for $69.99.

And copper/brass Barrow or Byski 360MM
    Radiators are $30 dollars!

Check out the round tube radiators, full copper for $70 bucks. That seems like It would offer unparalleled performance in something this size, for this cost. I really want to order (2) of them and try them out.
