I applied for a SWTOR beta to try to test out performance for you. I was not selected for a Diablo 3 beta, so I just sent an email to blizzard asking for a beta invite to test for eGPU users. I wonder if blizzard will take me seriously.

I have a older C2D laptop that I could test x2 on. Doesn't matter much though since Blizzard replied and said they can only give out keys at random. Judging by the response though they did seem to at least read my message.
My newer laptop does have the port configuration for x2, but sadly intel provides absolutely no documentation on how to set x2 on sandy bridge systems. -
Some one please help!
Thanks.

So I am having a bizarre problem with my DIY Vidock in one specific game: World of Warcraft. I can max stuff like Deus Ex and Warhammer 40k in DX11 but in WoW I can barely get 1 (one!) fps when I log in on absolute rock bottom settings. Something is clearly screwy.
Here is my setup:
Acer 6920/Win7/4GB RAM/Core2Duo etc etc.
DIY Vidock 1x link with PE4H and GTX 560 DCII
On the other games there is a short 1-2 second stutter in framerates when loading new textures, especially in Deus Ex which has a known issue with this. But nothing like what I am seeing in WoW; where it takes 10 seconds for move commands to be noticed by my stuttering character.
Anyone else getting this issue and have a fix? -
I honestly no idea why this problem happening & keep happening after reformat. Do you have another PSU or GPU to test? If you put back the PSU & GPU in your desktop computer, does they works perfectly?
Please run "Save Diags" in Setup 1.x. Boot into windows, mount Setup 1.x image & zipped the DIAG folder. Post the zipped DIAG folder here. We'll see what is going on. -
Hi, I have a question.
Would any of these things help me to connect eGPU to any of USB ports?
Amazon.com: USB-EXP USB to USB Mode ExpressCard Host Adapter for 3G AirCard ExpressCard AT&T Cingular Sprint Verizon Kyocera Marlin Novatel Sierra Wireless: Electronics
Amazon.com: StarTech.com USB to ExpressCard Adapter Ideal for Wireless Broadband Cards - Black (ECU2USB): Electronics
Amazon.com: USB To Expresscard: Electronics
Or is there any other known way of connecting eGPU to USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 or both ...
Thanks in advance. -
and would it be possible(teoretically) to connect to both expresscard and usb 3.0 - fx instead of mpcie so you dont have to make holes in the chassis to connect with mpcie...

Ok I got my hp tx2-1025dx to work with an external gpu, in this case the gtx 460.
For some reason I couldn't install the nvidia drivers on this laptop in windows 7, I don't know why but it just froze up half way through install.
Then I installed windows 8 dev preview and now I was able to install the drivers. After that I just plugged in the 460 and turned on the secondary monitor detected in the windows screen resolution changer. I didn't even have to use nvidia control panel.
Now it works after every restart and runs my games great for 1x speed. -
Anyone here ordered from Redtrontech off eBay?
Is the seller reliable and how long is the shipping?
I have all my pieces and I lucked out with a EVGA 465 that's unlockable to a 470 so I am dieing to get this project rolling. -
Here is the diag.txt file; the only other thing in the diag folder was an empty folder named "config." The diag.txt doesn't say anything about the gtx 560 ti; should it?
Attached Files:

-
The CONF folder shouldn't empty though. When you installed Setup 1.x, did you run MKDEVCON.BAT?
-
I followed all of the instructions the first time I set it up, but as I said before I am not sure what stays from reboot to reboot and I have rebooted a few times; is this something I need to run every time?
EDIT: ok now it appears as though the installation instructions on the setup 1.x page have changed and I can't find how to run devcon.BAT; where do I find this file and when do I run it? There is a devcon.txt file located in my C drive (not inside the DIYVIdock folder, just in the C drive and nothing else).
Also just to be clear the CONFIG folder located in the V drive has files in it; its just the config folder under "DIAG" that is empty. -
Only need to install Setup 1.x one time.
In the CONFIG folder, there should be a "devcon.txt" file. Did you have it? The "devcon.txt" file in the CONFIG folder was created when you run MKDEVCON.BAT during Setup 1.x installation. -
Yes I have the devcon.txt folder in the CONFIG file; its just the CONFIG file inside the DIAG folder that has nothing in it. Do you want to see the devon.txt file?
-
No. I just want to make sure the Setup 1.x is installed properly.
Did you tried the Error12 FAQ#2? -
As I said I TRIED to do what nando says in that post, but it is not very specific and I don't know where to actually put the code he posted.
He said "This can be done by adding two additional lines between your pci.bat and startup.bat." What does this mean? How do you put lines of code BETWEEN 2 different files? This does not make any sense. On top of that, I have no clue if this is even the problem I have. I see nothing in the PCI.bat that says BASE_ADDRESS. Should I? -
@Mjolner,
You should be able to see it. It is the last two lines in PCI.BAT.
(*the line marked with RED might different in your PCI.BAT)
Please try this.Code:@echo -s 2:0.0 BASE_ADDRESS_5=2001 >> setpci.arg @echo -s 0:1c.1 1c.b=20 1d.b=20 >> setpci.arg
- Boot into Setup 1.x
- Do 32-bit PCI compaction
- Enter "IFS Shell" (then enter "1")
- Execute these commands (per Error12 FAQ#2):-
(*change the line marked with RED according to your PCI.BAT)
Code:setpci -s 2:0.0 BASE_ADDRESS_5=d001 setpci -s 0:1c.1 1c.b=d0 1d.b=d0 exit
- Chainload to Windows
Please report back whether this fixed the Error 12. I'm off to bed now. See you later. -
Hello Kizwan, I will answer your questions in next post as I had partial success with eGPU. After setting x2, pci compaction when I reboot (as extend to desktop feature hangs laptop) the laptop desktop screen started showing boot process upto window loading only. There after laptop keeps restarting and display quality is very bad, I tried to change setting in safe mode ( it loads in safe mode but not normally ) but it didn't worked.
I get those results on 1gb ram ( after removing 2 gb ram). In device manager - display adapter although egpu is detected as 6500 series but catalyst manager fails to detect card. I tested it with drivers from original cd came with graphic card. Installation of graphic card drivers also gives error and fails to install few component. DNA driver link given by you is for vista/win7 but not for xp ( this time tested on xp sp3 ).
Please guide so video quality will remain standard and window can load further.
Thanks. -
When I run 32 bit compaction after only turning the GPU on after the bios loads it hangs on the "reparsing with new information" line. If I have the gpu on at startup it runs the compaction (I think), but says it can't find solutions. I am not sure what you mean by enter "IFS Shell." There is no way to enter text or commands during the compaction process, so where am I supposed to type this? Or, is it some thing called "IFS shell" that I am supposed to navigate to and select? Please keep in mind that I know very little of how this process works so you have to be very specific about the instructions you give, because right now I honestly can't find half of the things you are talking about. Where do I find/enter this "IFS shell?" A google search turns up NOTHING about where this is located.
Can nando or someone else help me with this in the meantime? I am really starting to get fed up with this process which inexplicably doesn't work at all for my computer for no apparent reason. Also, I think it would be better if the setup 1.x FAQ had more detailed and specific instructions for running compaction, because for someone who doesn't know much about what is actually going on behind the scenes with the EGPU (probably 90% of the people who do this) it is very vague and I honestly have no clue if I am doing the right thing or if I am screwing up my setup even more. -
OK I got the DIAG to work properly, here is the folder. Could someone please tell me why compaction isn't working?

Okay, here's my DIYegpu experience. First I'd like to say thanks to everyone who helped me get this thing set up. I definitely would have been clueless without them. Alright here's what I got:
Lenovo T400, P8700, 4500MHD, 4GB, 150GB 7200, Windows7 64bit
GTS 450/mini hdmi to hdmi/720p hdtv, CX430
PE4H V2 (from ebay) connected via express card
Running x1.Opt
My express slot was in PCI port4 and wifi in PCI port3
Setup:
1. Sleep laptop, plug in egpu, wake up laptop
2. Drivers failed to install, download latest driver and Nando's file from forum
3. Got error 43 so installed .1x
4. Restart computer, boot into .1x
5. PCI 32 bit compaction on egpu and gpu
6. Chainload windows7
Works like a charm
Here's some stats:

wifi off
usb:keyboard, mouse
HDsound on
3dmark06: 10582

3dmark06: 10867
The only game I have installed right now is Deus Ex Human Revolution which I don't think has any sort of stress test. The fps seems to be alright (mid 30s) most of the time but it does drop below 10 more than I would like. However, it seems to do that regardless of the settings so, like I've read, I think that is more of a problem with the game than with my egpu.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to make my DIYegpu run better, please let me know. As far as I can tell, my 3dmark scores seem pretty average for what I have. Also, if anyone wants me to run some other tests let me know.

Some more details that may or may not be important:
I don't need to sleep the computer in order for the card to be recognized, but it does show up in the device manager as "standard vga graphics adapter." It showed up as GTX 560 Ti before, but I did the "update driver software" option from the device manager (it was a long shot) and now it no longer shows up as a 560Ti, even after "uninstalling" it in the device manager.
Additionally, in setup 1.x the card shows up as an "unconfigured video device" (or something along those lines), not as a gtx 560 Ti.
Also, even though I get error 12 setup 1.x says pci_alloc_valid=yes on the right side of the main menu. It also says something about 128 mb free of pci space (or something like that, I don't remember exactly what it said but it was just below the PCI_alloc message).
When I run any compaction I have to hit keys a few times for it to go to the end. Is this normal? Also it seems to freeze up if I do 36 bit compaction; it will write a lot of lines and I can push enter a few times, but then it never gets past the final "reparsing" thing. However I think I may have 32 bit bios; could this be causing it?
Running "bridges" and 32 bit both result in no solution being found, and there is no PCI_alloc_valid=yes method at the end of the compaction that I think is supposed to be there. -
The "IFS Shell" is one of the menu in the Setup 1.x. It's right below "Save Diags". Impossible you don't see it. If 32-bit compaction unsuccessful, did you tried 32-bitA compaction?

@Mjolner,
The instruction is clear & simple. For example, if you unsuccessful at step no. 2, obviously there is no meaning to proceed to step no. 3. Only proceed if each step successful.
The 128MB in the bracket after "pci_alloc_valid=yes" is the available PCI space for the eGPU. 128MB is not enough, you'll need 256MB, that is why you'll need to do PCI compaction.
When doing PCI compaction, there are on-screen instruction. You'll need to read & follow them carefully. If it ask you to press Enter, then press Enter. -
Did you test the PSU & GPU on a desktop computer, like I asked you before?
-
OK I got the GPU working by pulling out 2GB of RAM, which leaves 1024 mb of PCI space free. However for obvious reasons this is not a good permanent solution because a good amount of the time I am going to be using over 2GB of RAM.
However, in the meantime how do I enable optimus? Are there actual options for it in the nvidia control pane;, because I can't seem to find any.
I ran 3dmark11 and only got around 2500 which seems low compared to the other 3dmark11 results from gtx 460's and 470s running x1 optimus; I tried playing BFBC2 online and it was definitely heavily bottlenecked by something, although this could have been partly because of running out of RAM.. I am going to run the RE5 benchmark and see what that gives. -
@Mjolner, I noticed you're running older version of Setup 1.x.
- Please uninstall current Setup 1.x by running uninstall-disk-image.bat in C:\eGPU folder, then removed the C:\eGPU folder.
- Please download latest version available here. The setup instruction also available in same page (in "How do I install this software?").
- Then, boot into Setup 1.x, select "Video Cards" menu & then select "dGPU [on]" (it should change to "dGPU [off]"). This should provide more free PCI space for eGPU. So, you should be able to use 4GB of RAM.
- Press "ALT+DEL" button one time. This will save a screenshot in "DIAG" folder.
- Then, chainload to Windows.
If still Error 12, please run Save Diags->compact_fails and Save Diags->Windows_fails. Then, Run \eGPU\eGPU-Setup-mount.bat, rar the v:\diag folder, post it here.
@pappu6600, I don't know what going on in your computer but please make sure you have latest Setup 1.x installed. After installing latest Setup 1.x, please run Save Diags->compact_fails and Save Diags->Windows_fails. Then, Run \eGPU\eGPU-Setup-mount.bat, rar the v:\diag folder, post it here.
To All,
In the future, when asking for help, please include this details (I will add this to FAQ page):-
-
The folder on the C drive doesn't seem to have the uninstall batch file; how should I uninstall it manually so it is compeltely gone (i.e. bcd entries and other things)?
-
Do this carefully! Don't blame me if you did it wrong.
How to removed/uninstall Setup 1.x boot menu using Win7 BCDEDIT tool?
- Open command prompt
- Run bcdedit:-
![[IMG]](images/storyImages/01_BCDEDIT.jpg)
- Marked with red rectangle is the Setup 1.x boot menu identifier. Identifier will be different on your system.
- Use bcdedit /delete to removed/uninstall the Setup 1.x boot menu.
![[IMG]](images/storyImages/02_BCDEDIT_DELETE.jpg)
- After successfully removing the Setup 1.x boot menu, manually delete the C:\eGPU folder.

I guess the posts goes on too quickly. Anyway, I would still want to know if this would be possible. Please, I want to be sure before I order anything. It would be great if I could use 2x USB 2.0, 1x USB 3.0 and 1x pci. Any help is appreciated ...
-
You can't use USB since it does not carry a PCI-E lane. If it was possible it would have already been done since expresscard and mPCI-E both have USB in addition to PCI-E, and it would be easy to use their bandwidth.

Hi,
Here is my problem:
I can run eGPU setup and compaction fine, but when I chainload it says "OS missing". I know this has something to do with grub not loading the right partition?
Problem is I don't know how to fix this. Can someone help me out? -
OK after disabling the dGPU and running compaction I managed to get 512mb free (with all of my RAM in) and now it seems to be working. Thank you so much for your help Kizwan!!!
-
I know ... but have you checked the links from my previus post? (the one i quoted). Those converters are supposed to transform USB slot into expresscard (which is usable by eGPU).
-
Funny I was thinking about something just like this(an external GPU) just a few days back and look at this thread. Anyway can someone explain to me why computer manufactures just can't put a very fast port on the external part of a computer. They have sata, ide, etc. on the inside why can they just put some on the outside. Yes I know about esata, usb 3.0, etc. but they are just not the same
-
Did someone mention
Sonnet - RackMac mini Xserver: Rackmount 1U System with PCIe 2.0 Expansion Slot
Already
Thunderbolt => 4x pci-e
Just what we need! Doubt it'll have the psu to power a graphics card, else we could just attach a thunderbolt extention cable and use it that way. -
My setup uses the Y460 laptop in my sig, as well as a PE4H and corsair CX500 power supply. The PE4H is attached via the expresscard slot.
In order for the GPU to be detected I need to disable the integrated ATI card. Compaction is not necessary, although I believe this could take place of disabling the dGPU (although there is little need for the dGPU when the eGPU is plugged in). If I set the delay slider to 6.9 seconds the card seems to be detected on bootup, but I ran into issues with resuming from sleep with the slider in this position. With the slider in the 0 second position it resumes from sleep fine. However, if the card was turned off while the laptop was sleeping I need to unplug and re-plug the expresscard adapter in for the card to get recognized again. In most instances it seems the GPU is plug and play given that the dGPU is disabled to free up the space; I can unplug the expresscard (which causes the image to go to the internal display as the laptop is now only using the iGPU) and then plug it back in and have the eGPU display an image on my monitor. Unplugging the DVI cable from the monitor or eGPU results in optimus rendering the image on the laptop screen. For some reason, turning off the monitor doesn't seem to have the same effect.
Some benchmarks:

It seems even a small overclock will result in a (small) measured performance increase even at x1 optimus bandwidth.
Interestingly if I narrow down the results to only computers with i5 520m processors on the 3dmark11 results page, my computer has the second highest 3dmark11 score (technically third, but the first two are from the same computer. They also aren't running approved drivers, and they somehow have a score that is 1K points higher than others with the same GPU, a mobility 5870, so something may be a little suspect about their score).

3DMARK06
http://3dmark.com/3dm06/16062563
The gpu usage while running 3dmark06 was below 50% most of the time. As this is a fairly old benchmark it really doesn't take advantage of the hardware as 3dmark11 does.
Unigine Heaven v2.5
This was all with the Y460 laptop in my signature in x1 Optimus mode. The video card is an EVGA GTX 560 Ti Superclocked edition at (unless otherwise noted) 900 MHz core, 1800 MHz shader clock, and 2106 MHz memory clock.
In my i5 2500K desktop (also in my sig) I got about P5000 for a total score, although this was with the CPU at 4.3 Ghz so the CPU score was almost 8,000, which brought the overall score up a bit. I can't recall exactly what the GPU score was.
Some general game impressions:
TF2:
multiplayer played pretty well in all high settings at 1080P even though GPU usage was only 50-60% some times. It is DEFINITELY better than my mobility 5650, which struggled at 1080P with medium/low settings due to its pathetic memory bandwidth. I was able to play with 8x antialiasing (also 16X, but it looks the same) and 16x AF with FPS mostly around 50-120. On 32 player servers with a lot of stuff going on it would occasionally drop into the 40s, but that may be my CPU not having enough horsepower more than anything else (also I am pretty sure everyone who plays TF2 experiences FPS drops at those times).
BFBC2: playing on 32 player servers was definitely playable; with a lot of stuff going on it would hover around 30-33 fps on all high settings @1080P with 2X AA and 8X AF. I ran it in DX9 mode as well as DX10 mode and it was pretty playable. DX11 mode seemed to have greater performance losses; of course this isn't the most optimized game out there. which may have helped a bit but I am not exactly sure yet. Without things going on the FPS was 60-70. GPU usage with HBAO off was around 60% most of the time at best. Zooming in with the sniper rifle scope yielded better FPS (50-60) and was much much better than the FPS while scoped that I had with my 5650m. It definitely doesn't run as smoothly as my desktop, but it is not really worse than my 5650M, and looks a LOT nicer. Also when not many things were going on I would regularly get 80 FPS, which wouldn't happen with my 5650m on ANY settings (except maybe all low at 1366 x 768) Hopefully this means that it will be able to play BF3 decently.
Crysis Warhead: Being a singleplayer game, this played very well because of reduced cpu->gpu traffic. With the settings on the CCC custom config level 4 setting (with 4+ being the highest), I got 30-45 fps on the first level which is completely playable for crysis. This is basically equivalent to "high" settings with a few optimizations.
The 5650M in my Y460 got around P1200 in 3dmark11 heavily overclocked to 790 Mhz core and 970 Mhz memory, so this is a BIG improvement.
I will update with more benchmarks as I do them. -
My egpu suddenly stops working and loses connection when i am running sc2 with my laptop, there is no BSOD. I then have to restart the whole setup in order to get it to function. This problem has been occuring a lot and I think it is a lose connection with the black power connector on my pe4h since I put electric tape on that particular part it restarts less. That part is also very very hot at all times especially when i am running sc2. My egpu rig is powered by an A/C power adapter. I disabled my internal intel graphics card adapter in order to allocate enough space through my express card slot for my egpu. I am using an asus 6670 which only uses the pcie express slot for power.
-
Also, is there any way to have the setup automatically run (instead of having to select it from the boot menu every time) and then have it automatically disable the discrete GPU to free up the PCI space, and then automatically chainload into windows? Its not too much trouble to do all of this manuall every time I start up, but it would be nice to not have to. I tried putting what I thought was the line to make the startup.bat disable the dedicated GPU in the file, but it doesn't work and every time I try to do the automatic startup I get some horrible very low res image that seems to be from the most basic VGA drivers.
Also, when I try to go into sleep mode I can't seem to resume. -
Open testing: 285.27 Optimus Retrofit for eGPU and any other system that may be able to use it. I have kfilter enabled on this which is a new kernel mode driver that has something to do with Optimus. (I have no clue what.) Let me know if this works and if you guys notice anything new with it. EDIT: Forgot to add this. I assume this is the case with everything eGPU but "use these at your own risk".

Please post details information regarding your setup per Main_FAQ#1 instruction.
Khenglish already explained to you, USB doesn't carry PCIe lane. The USB to ExpressCard adapter only support USB device, e.g. WWAN, bluetooth, etc.
Are you sure? Because if I'm not mistaken someone running benchmark on his/her mobility 5870 & it scores a bit higher than my eGPU 5870. Anyway, I can assure you my eGPU 5870 3dMark11 scores are genuine.
The scores for both x1 & x2 setup was using
DNA-drivers | Do Not Argue driver (11.5b). I re-run 3dMark11 today using official Catalyst 11.8 driver.
ATI Radeon HD 5870 video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-720QM Processor ,Dell Inc. score: P3694 3DMarks
Did you set PhysX to CPU in the NVIDIA control panel before running the benchmark? Anyway, congratulations on your successful eGPU Optimus implementation.
Please post details information regarding your setup per Main_FAQ#1 instruction.
Can you get eGPU working just only dGPU off & without PCI compaction? If yes, you only need to put " call iport dGPU off" before " call grub4dos mbr" in STARTUP.BAT. Then you only need to boot into Setup 1.x , choose option #1 (boot with STARTUP.BAT) & then boot into Windows. Only need to do this one time every cold boot. Remember, when you running any operation in Setup 1.x, STARTUP.BAT content will be overwrite.
Sleep/hibernate will not work with eGPU when it involved PCI compaction and/or PCI link width tweak (e.g. x2) because upon resume, the PCI allocation will reset back to default. Notebook doesn't design to handle it. -
Trying it out. So this kfilter thing is not enabled by default? I'm running an unmodded 285.27 right now.
Update: So far I noticed that this driver allows internal LCD mode, while the regular beta driver does not. -
I was just basing the expected 5870m performance on what most of the other results were; although a few were over 3K most were around 2600 it seemed.
Yes, the tests were all run with physics set to CPU.
In order to get the GPU working I only needed to disable the dGPU in order to get exactly 256mb free. I did do compaction also just the first time just to be sure, but it turns out it wasn't needed.
Also, I get an interesting artifact in BC2: when my hud is anything other than white (i.e. red because I was wounded) there is a large white rectangle in the middle of the screen where this red "blood filter" doesn't seem to be applied. I don't notice it most of the time as it is sort of subtle and it isn't gamebreaking, but I think it may be an eGPU issue as I can't find any mention of it on the internet.
Does anyone have BFBC2 and an egpu setup they could confirm this on? -
I didn't experiencing the large white rectangle in the middle of the screen when I'm being shot at or when injured. You can see some of the screenshot in my eGPU experience post (link in my sig).
-
Unmodded I would assume is not using Optimus. You can read the first post for some of the benefits with Optimus on eGPU. (Like the Internal LCD benefit you are noticing.)
You should see a small square in your taskbar that when hovered over says "NVIDIA GPU Activity". When clicked it should show a box with "GPU Activity". This is the indicator that shows when the NVIDIA GPU is in use. Optimus switches to the NVIDIA GPU when needed but uses Intel Graphics when its not. NOTE: If you do not see this square open "NVIDIA Control Panel" and click "Desktop" at the top of the window. Make sure both "Display GPU Activity Icon in Notification Area" and "Add Run with graphics processor to Context Menu" are checked.
KFilter is new to the 280+ series of drivers. Not sure what it does honestly. Would be great if it gave an additional performance boost or allowed for optimization away from 1x but I am probably just wishing. Hoping one of you will let me know if you notice any difference. Note: I don't have an eGPU, yet.
EDIT: Thanks for testing them BTW. Awfully rude of me. -
Problem description
1. What's the problem.
My egpu stops with no BSOD. I think it might have to do with a lose connection with the black power connector next to where you plug in the power adapter since when i put electric tape on there the problem went away and then reappeared. This area also gets extremely hot. This problem occurs very frequently and usually when i am playing sc2.
2. Have you consulted the Troubleshooting FAQ to resolve the issue?
I have tried the troubleshooting FAQ for advice and my problem doesn't seem to be on there.

Oh optimus's compression definitely ran on the unmodded driver. It had the preferred graphics adapter option, but it just didn't work. I ran a bunch of benchmarks and there doesn't seem to be any performance improvement over unmodded. Will try my older laptop next to see if it gains optimus.
Update: Optimus does not engage on my laptop that does not have an intel igp. -
anyone have any tips on overclocking a GTS450? Or if it's even worth it for the amount of stress put on the gpu
