    Hello hubert, i don't want to talk for nando, but accusations aren't against you (and many people wish are working hard to do what you do), but against the large difference of prices between your products (professional, good looking and work good) and our DIY eGPU.
    Also, I understand that a manufacture, a good enclosure and people (devs, little hands ...) have a price, and there are repercussion to the final price.

    I really hope you can find a way to work in collaboration with Nando and you could establish a good win-win relation.

    Let me express my personal point of view about the discussion.
    I joined the collaboration here on the DIY thread to help the solution spreads providing gaming videos and everyday usage suggestions for the kit. So, my personal "profit" was to have the opportunity to receive engineering samples and work on them before the others to strengthen the opportunity to spread the solution on the "release date". (We all know that the solution is not so popular, so provide real advantages and scenarios is the best way to push people in the right direction) and the thread was lacking of it.

    Anyway I think that the focus of the two "products" are (today) different, because:

    - Villagetronic one is meant to be a profitable business (I'm not talking about "how much" margins, simply about the "mission") and that's how economics works;

    - DIY solution is meant to be, first of all, affordable to users (in fact except for Nando's software that is not necessary for all the configs) we had several users that made the adapter by themselves if they have enough skills. So the turnover and the margins for this solution are only for the manufacturer of the kit (in this case BPlus).

    So this 2 different point of view should be always taken in mind while we discuss on how there could be a cooperation between the parts. Is like to have a Top-Down view (VillageTronic) and a Bottom-Up one (DIY).

    Having Mr. Chen cooperative on the price side, is SURELY one step ahead for a collaboration IMHO because there must be a change (also partial) of the point of view to see the targets in common.

    Now, speaking about the "help desk" side:
    The thread became the "harbor" for all the people that were in trouble for both the solutions. But the problem was that while for the DIY solution the opportunity to have an "engineered solution" was brought by the community itself, (not from BPlus) and we had the knowledge to help, for the VillageTronic seem we had the duties but not the honors (and considering that often today the after-sale is more important than the sale itself, it would be a HEAVY burden to be managed by us), that's why we "forwarded" people to you.

    I don't know the exact story of the donations for the 1.x Setup except for the fact that about 250 "people" downloaded it, only one made the donation, that's because, to help the proceeding of the development, the solution became donationware (and from this point of view I totally agree).

    thank you for your post. I like to reply to your post piece by piece:

    1) I created ViDock, I decided the pricing. So when Nando talks about "profiteering" and "toxic Profits" then he talks about what I do and he passes along the judgement that I do it in a very bad manner. I think we do not need to discuss if "profiteering" or "Toxic Profits" are meant friendly or hostile. It would have been very different, if Nando4 would have written something along the line: "I personally feel that the profit margins on ViDock are unreasonably high and this makes me uncomfortable. Since Hubert offered to answer any question about what makes me uncomfortable I like him to explain why the ViDock sales price is so much above the manufacturing cost". This expresses clearly a suspicion but leaves open room for me to either give a convincing or not convincing reply. If I have a not convincing reply, then I deserve to be scolded if indeed I make profiteering. But what if the situation is totally different ?

    2) These are even not comparable products. The BPlus PCIe PCB is just that, it makes a PCIe connection. This is identical to the Main PCB of ViDock. On top of it ViDock has the Power Management PCB, Housing, Power Supplies, Professional Technical Support. We also have new product development. All that BPlus PCB does not have. The obvious solution to this discussion is that we will offer the same type of PCB at a lower price than BPlus and than you can compare Apple to Apple. We will have same or better features at lower cost and then things become very transparent. If however you want to compare the same type of product: ( Completely assembled, Power Supply included, Professional Technical Support ) then please compare the price with Magma Express Box. That would be 199 for ViDock, 739 for Magma Express Box.

    3) I really hope too to find a positive result and I am a strong believer in a Win / Win / Win solution. I believe a lot of the frustration and anger is caused by misunderstanding and lack of understanding and I am trying my best here to clear it up.

    Let me know if this makes any sense and is helpful for both camps to come closer together.

    First of all, I have to (again) thank you for all you have done and are still doing for the egpu community. I've been following this forum since October of 2011 and it is due to your diligent efforts that it has gone from a fledgeling enthusiast hobby to a full blown and very practical solution for so many people out there.

    I went through what you wrote and also thought about it. I myself am not a big fan of how villagetronic has profited immensely from commercializing this niche market, but there are much bigger fish out there, and I think post-x1.2Opt solutions working, the big fish (gaming laptop vendors) should be worried indeed. Their products are nothing but expensive hardware crudely put together and running on glorified UPS's.

    The way I see it, it could be suggested to villagetronic (or ANY and ALL interested manufacturers) that they could manufacture 'gaming docks' for the general public, that could be pre-built and all-inclusive enclosures with PSU's and maybe option of cards also put in by Villagetronic and sell them to the general public for trouble free experience.

    What they could do for the diy egpu community is allow us purchase of parts individually and at cheaper rates. This way they have a competitive product for markets and we get cheaper parts.

    At the very least this will pressurize Bplus to also lower prices.

    But to look at the whole deal from a distance, Villagetronics gets a lot out of this deal, whereas the diy egpu community is now strong enough and well integrated to not need that kind of support.

    The one thing that does make sense to me in the bigger picture and in a long term sense is that with commercial interests getting involved, other manufacturers might also want to jump in the fray sooner or later.

    Personally, I wish and hope that AMD takes notice, and allow their hardware design to make use of what NVidia and Intel are facilitating. Is there no way to get in touch with them and ask them to capitalize officially on this market before nvidia and intel can make official moves? Would really help us all with more choice.

    I actually prefer the open-source feel of the community and the actual spirit of 'community' that pervades on DIY eGPU thread, and fear that it may be lost once money starts exchanging hands. It would be more ideal if at the top-end hardware manufacturer level (AMD, Intel, nvidia and laptop manufacturers) could simply facilitate us better rather than middlemen companies asking for their pound of flesh.

    Anyways, these are my thoughts that I just felt like sharing. Feel free to use them on the forum or quote me or whatever way you feel like.

    I would also like to thank Hubert Chen for being kind enough to engage the community into this discussion. I am sure that he and his company are extremely hardworking and passionate about this, which is the probably the reason why there has been a heightened emotional response to this discussion.

    May I suggest to Hubert that by lowering prices and enabling mass acceptance of his products might actually allow him a strong foothold in what will inevitably be a big thing soon enough?

    At this time, any consumer showing off an economical, slick, well manufactured enclosure attached to an ultrabook-like laptop and playing Skyrim and BF3 in high res will be an excellent advertisement for the product, and thus a viable investment in itself, and not decreased profit margins.

    It will be more beneficial to Villagetronic if it becomes widely associated with those wishing a hassle-free AND well-supported commercial egpu solution rather than trying to compete with intense competition which will be inevitable once other companies also jump into the fray as this goes mainstream due to the inevitable relegation of the 'desktop' to a niche market outside of technical/professional circles.

    I cannot agree more on this point ;) Today we ALL lack in promoting the solution, but the interest once you introduce the opportunity is HUGE (and I noticed it in all the Italian boards where I introduced the topic).
    With the MSI GUS II on the way, the timing to release a "competitive" (affordable and good looking) solution on the market, without other big players arond, could boost the sales.

    Oh wow, I clearly picked the wrong time to try out my equipment and have difficulty getting it to work didn't I?

    Still, I'll go ahead and post what I've got down here and hopefully if anybody has any spare time they can help, any tips or pointed would be very much appreciated ;D

    I have a PE4H with EC2C and a GTX 550Ti, and the laptop is a Lenovo Y450 with a dGPU G210M.

    I've performed a 32-bitA compaction on the eGPU only (everything else has no solutions), and taken the dumps which I've attached below. I consistently get code 10, disabling the hdmi audio and installing the desktop drivers changed nothing.

    I did give it a shot on linux to try my luck, and the screen looks like 3 coloured static before segfaulting out.

    I also tried to do the 36b dsdt thing, but it turns out my w7 install doesn't have asl.exe? This makes me greatly confused.

    If anybody can give me tips, pointers or additional information I need to post up and stuff I luv u long time.

    I doubt the top of the food chain (graphics chip companies) would ever be interested in officially supporting and facilitating the development of a niche product at the cost of angering the big fish (big box OEM/laptop manufacturers). There is some incentive for the AMD/nVidia, that they could sell more desktop parts, but I doubt our presence is large enough to convince them to do so. As of Intel, well there VGA products is crap in general, anyways.

    I think we should really see that the community and product manufacturers like VillageTronic are really targeting different markets.

    The community is primarily for people who don't bother to get their hands dirty and/or void the warranty on their laptop. If I was 10 years younger maybe I won't mind keeping my eGPU connection inside a shoebox.

    The ViDock (and possible competing products from mainstream or niche manufacturers) offer a different solution. Yeah, the true DIYers will always laugh at the people who prefer to throw money at the situation instead of figuring out they could figure it out themselves. Well, I can't solder. Took a class in high school, forgot how to solder a long time ago. I don't have access to a machine shop/power tools either. Yeah I took shop back in junior high, and let's just say things weren't pretty so I had to switch to home ec (aka cooking). And I would prefer to keep my laptop without visible defects and/or alterations so I could still get warranty protection. I got a ViDock 4 +, and while I am not happy with the price I think it is acceptable.

    Now the problem so far, is that the commercial solutions like ViDock do not offer the peace of mind because of issues that are not the fault of their own. I think we can say most of the Error 12 or not enough resources issue stems higher up in the food chain, we could probably blame M$/INTEL/NVIDIA/AMD for that. And given the slow development on the LightPeak/Thunderbolt/Lightning front, I doubt the system device manufacturers are really interested in embracing our niche.

    Then the main flak that goes toward VillageTronic is the fact that Nando and folks came up with a clever solution while VillageTronic could not brew over all this time. What happened there, I really don't know. VillageTronic really dropped the ball on that.

    Well...I think I might be the only VillageTronic user who decided to pay for Nando's software. But seriously, if you require a purchase to download, that is NOT and should NOT be called donation ware. It is commercial software.
    So if the community wants to be fair and open, I would suggest to stay away from arguable terms.

    Thank you for your post and your neutral language and for your inspiration! I agree with much of what you say. I also like to clarify that we (Village Tronic) are not making profit in a sense to have surplus money to buy a car or plasma TV or whatever gadget is hip. As a company we have operational costs, such as salaries, costs for electricity and water, rent, tax, etc. These costs needs to be covered by the difference between manufacturing costs and sales price. To cover operational cost is not profit and in this sense we are a true non profit organization. All money we make in the company stays in the company, to the extreme that I have no car and ride with my bicycle to work. My MP3 player, mobile phone and digital camera are all > 10 years old. I prefer to spend such kind of money to buy necessary development or production equipment and to develop new products that benefit the community. ( This also should make it clear that at one point I want to see a little bit of profit to afford a new camera for my hobby).

    Village Tronic is undergoing a huge change since August last year. Our target is to remove the separation / border between company and customer and to practicly turn it into one big community. I absolutely do not care personal profit but I do care collaboration in the community and I care to make products that make people happy and that are very affordable. So I think in this regards Nandos target and our target are identical.

    I think what Nando needs to see is that even a non profit company such as ours must cover their expenses, or they need to shut down and can not longer contribute to the community.

    All the time we are compared to BPlus and that they are lower cost. But if you look closely to it, I believe this only appears so. If I understand your own writing correctly, BPlus did not designed the Circuit, it appears this community did. BPlus does also not do the tech support, this community does. BPlus did not developed housing and financed tooling costs. It does not exist. BPlus did not developed power supplies that are certified for external use, they do not exist. So with all these cost savings on BPlus side, sure they can offer at lower cost and still make a profit.
    At least in this one Nando and me agree. If we offer a PCB only same as BPlus, no tech support from us but from this community, then we can offer a lower cost solution than BPLus and I will be delighted to do this if this community agrees to it. And the timing has to be right now. We are coming to the point of freezing features of ViDock G4. If you wish for such a ViDock version, then all of us need to come to an agreement in the next weeks. Or the window of opportunity for ViDOck G4 is missed and we all can try again 2 years later with ViDock G5. If we do this, there would be benefits for a " DIY ViDock G4 " Buyer. He can start with one PCB only and when desired, he could add power management and housing later. We will also make this product ATX power supply compatible to reduce costs further. So the customer could have the best from the currently separated worlds.

    Help Desk Side:
    I think here is a huge confusion. We have our own help desk. Check it out. Plase post in our ticket system and you will get a reply by a full time employee Violet ( my wife) and sometimes by me. I am positive that never ever we forwarded people to this forum in case they think they have a defective power supply, shipment went bad, burned out components or whatever can go wrong with a product. We take care about our customers ourselves in our own helpdesk. This is what they paid for and we deliver. What we did was that when a customer had an Error 12 we occasionally shared the link to what was called then DIY ViDock Setup. When I read the terms it stated that it could be used by anybody with an external GPU including ViDock users. After some time customer came back and told us this forum told them we would be misusing the terms and that this SW now costs 25 USD. So we then changed and told customers that there is tool that migtht solve their problems, here is the link and it costs 25 USD. In order to move things forward we then shared the cost with the customer, that is we paid 12.5 USD to the customer who bought the DIY ViDock Setup Software. So I hope after this we can agree:
    a) We did not "Abused" this' forum's Softare
    b) We did not pushed help desk work of our product to this forum
    But instead we forwarded paying customer and we actually sponsored sales by lowering the entry level cost for your SW.
    We are the good guys here helping this forum and helping Nando to make money, we are not the bad guys here.
    If this is still not clear, please post your questions or your different point of view so that we can solve this misunderstanding once and for all in a pieceful discussion.

    I think it is a good think Nando makes money of DIY eGPU
    He worked hard, He made a product that is solving a problem a customer has. It is worth money. There is nothing wrong with taking money to cover expenses. Heck, after some time he will even want to make a profit to keep going and stay motivated. Making profit is not a bad thing, It is a good thing!

    Offer to work in an open source project together
    Simone, your writing really inspired me how to bring this discussion forward. If I understand you correctly many members of this communityhave worked here together to develope a better HW at lower cost. This is one of the things that we are doing at this moment:
    a) We are developing C². It is an open source connection standard. It offers connection speed from 5 GTs .... 128 GTs and intergated Power into the same cable from 225 W ... 2800 W. On top of it we will publish open source all development tools we have developed internally, such as Trace Impedance TDR meter, ICT ( In Circuit Testing), measuring of Eye Diagram, etc. Our target is to make development and manufacturing of PCIe boxes really affordable for anybody who wants to do it, including students.
    b) We are working on including other open source communities into the effort. E.g. the entire microcontroller part of C² is based on Arduino. We will also add additional board and development tools to the Arduino open source community

    I hope this gives you an idea where we are heading. I was not looking on piggy backing on this community and dumping our homework onto you. The opposite. I was offering our resources for this community to share and to prosoer so that together we can develop the next external GPU generation. More powerful and lower end user price. I was looking for enthusiasts who already have accomplished one open source project together and would love to join the next one to give more power to the open source community.

    I was hoping that some things we are doing could be of value to this community. E.g. we are developing a community collaboration website. My hero example is the Arduino site. In one place you have a Forum, (such as this one), but you have so much more. You have References, Libraries, Code Kitchens, etc. When you are looking for information, it is easy to find. How about joining forces to build such a commnity place. Something that makes this slew of information available in here much easier to be found and managed? These are just a few of many ideas. I hope you get an idea.

    Thanks for your post and your kind words. You speak out an interesting point of view, which is the balance of benefit from a cooperation. But it seems both of us see it very differently.

    From my point of view this community is piggy backing on Village Tronic and thus today it is Win DIE eGPU and loose Village Tronic. It seems you see it is the other way around: Loose DIY eGPU and Win Village Tronic.

    Could you please outline why you think this proposal is lopsided and what you think are the benefits for Village Tronic and which are the ones for this community. I am surprised you find this unbalanced and spelling it our helps me to better understand why you think this deal is lopsided.

    Anyone? I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong and why my T420 won't detect my eGPU. Does having a Smart Card reader and a finger print scanner have anything to do with it?

    The egpu community stands to gain NOTHING from a "deal" with Villagetronics, while they will get to solve their Error 12 issues and regain some of the customer satisfaction they've lost.

    It's naive to think that we have the power to strong-arm a company to lower its pricing, or change its offerings.

    Furthermore, the egpu and Villagetronics products are separate offerings.
    One is a commercial solution and the other is a community-powered "service" (for the lack of a better word).
    There's no room to mix the two.

    Anyone who's ever taken business class will that you that if Villagetronics can't offer a complete, 100% working, commercial solution, they will die out just like any other company in the world which fails to deliver a quality product.
    That's the reality of modern economics.


    The way I see it, we (as a community) have two options:
    1) Leave the status quo as is. We do our own thing and they do theirs.

    2) Villagetronics signs a volume licensing agreement where they will pay a lower fixed fee (say $10 per license) but gets the software as is.
    Meaning:
    - When a purchase is made for one of their products, Harmonic Inversion/Nando/someone will email that customer a link to a one-time download of the current version of egpu setup.
    - Villagetronics users get no support from us. They have issues - they take them up with the company who sold them the faulty product.

    Obviously, the second solution is very complicated and involves legal issues as well as altering Villagetronics' payment process so that the purchase notification is sent automatically.


    My vote would be option #1.

    You are currently running a Verde (mobile) G210M driver and a desktop GTX550Ti driver. That is likely the cause of your error 10. Try the modded Verde drive which unifies both drivers. Ensure you select the 'clean install' option.

    Try setting SW2 to 2-3 (x16 card). Also unplug/replug the EC2C the hit F5. Also ensure the expresscard slot is enabled in the bios. Finally, try a suspend/resume in Windows followed by a Device Manager scan. If the PE4L 2.1 is OK it should pick up your eGPU.

    Herbert's - I do not wish to respond to your remarks as do not wish to make this a Jerry Springer show other than let the products, software support and pricing speak for itself

    Thanks nando. I ended up flipping the SW2 switches while everything was connected and running, out of frustration. To my surprise I heard the hardware sound go off.

    Is a score of 16870 3DMarks on the internal screen right considering my gear?

    I'm not sure if I'm running 1.2 or 1.1; I bought the PE4L 2.1b because I read that it meet x2 standards. (The 1.x means that you're running 1 cable and the x means you're running either PCIE 1.0 or 2.0 right?)

    Is there anyway I can connect and disconnect the eGPU without restarting while using the internal screen? I tried the sleep and connect/disconnect method but it made my display stay off forcing me to restart.

    Thank you for the responses RE: Villagetronic collabortion. Pls keep them coming.


    Good to see your up and running. My i5-2540M 2.6 + [email protected] scored 3dmark06= 15816 with the internal LCD. When running x1.1Opt it scored 9894 so yeah, you are running pci-e 2.0. I'm guessing you have an i7 since you scored quite a bit better than I did with the same eGPU.

    Depending on your expresscard slot, you may see a eject VGA device in the system tray. If not, then use Device Manager to disable the eGPU. Then you can unplug it without BSODing. Though next time you boot it will be disabled so needs to be manually enable it in Device Manager.

    ahhh i need your help....i got a very low score with my nvidia card.

    i startet to test different graphic cards...
    first my system:
    southbridge intel hm65
    i5-2410
    6gb ram with dsdt override

    i tested my old cheap ATI GPU 5570 and got a score of 6790 3dmarks 06
    after that i installed the optimus driver (the modded nvidia driver) an testet my NVIDIA GTS 450 but i just reached a score of 5516 3dmarks...in my mind that cant be right, because the 450 should be much better than the 5570...?
    what could i have done wrong?
    (i think that reallyy a bad result because my Intel HD 3000 reaches 3996 yet...)

    p.s.: i get an error 10 at my microsoft virtual wifi mini port adapter #2....perhaps that helps?


    btw: is here any bench thread or sth like that so that i can search for similar results?

    I found older posts indicating you have a HD3000 iGPU. GT525M dGU and now GTS450 eGPU. As your not telling us what system you have I figure it could be a Vostro 3750 or a Fujitsu AH531, both of which have expresscard slots and a GT525M option.

    The low performance you are seeing is because the NVidia pci-e compression isn't engaging. That will happen if either the HD3000 isn't the active bootup video device or the GT525M is active and becomes the Optimus device instead of the GTS450. For the former ensure you boot past the bios, hit F8 to halt Win7 loading, hotplug the eGPU and continue Win7 boot. If the later then you'll need to check if the bios has the facility to disable the dGPU. If not then use Setup 1.x to do it.

    There are plenty of benchmark results on the first page. If you needed the DSDT override to over error 12 issues then pls post it, along with your system details and at least the DX9-centric benchmark results so it can be linked on the first page as another experience.

    sry i don know that it helps / is needed...yes i have a Fujitsu AH531 and yes i did not switch off my GT525M so i think that you could be right with your idea i ll try to deactivate the dGPU now :)

    €: i did not get it....there is no option to deactivate the dGPU, even if i deinstall or deactivate it in windows it dont works...and if i ll try to restart my notebook with the eGPU inserted, it freezes with a black screen before rebooting...
    even if i hotplug the eGPU there is no difference...does that mean that the setup 1.x wont work either?
    i didnt try it yet because i think its much money only to try it ;)

    Hi, I've got a 13-inch Macbook Pro (early 2011) with a 2.7Ghz i7 dual core 2 processor and 8GB ram. I'd really like to run a eGPU purely to play games at the highest setting possible, but I'm not sure whether my system is able to do so.

    Few reasons for my doubt:

    1. People have mentioned problems with systems running over 4GB ram
    2. Macbook generations 1, 2 and 4 are the only ones compatible with eGPU because of some memory dedication restriction (my macbook is 5th gen, pretty sure)

    If I was going to try and do it anyway I would run Windows 7 in bootcamp, and connect to an external display. Has anyone heard of this being done, or have any advice as to whether it will or won't work or ways I could get the job done?

    I have an issue with my eGPU. I use WiDi with Netgear PTV2000 and if want to turn it on, i need to have intel my wifi software already on. If I start 8460p with eGPU, intel mywifi doesn't see any wifi card despite i have connection through notification area. And If i want to use WiDi i need to start without eGPU, only then intel mywifi sees a wireless card and widi software is able to turn on :)
    Any suggestions? :)

    I use windows only when I do not need a Widi. When I want WiDi i need to turn on intel my wifi and when eGPU is already plugged, intel my wifi doesn't see any wireless card.

    There are some Macbook DIY eGPU implementation examples to help you along. In addition can perform a DSDT override and/or use Setup 1.x if encounter an error12 with 4GB+ installed on your bootcamped Win7. No reason why you can't try either or both before you purchase the hardware.

    Similar problem occurs on my 2560P. If I boot, halt Win7 loading, hotplug the eGPU and continue boot then the wifi LED button will be orange indicating it's not working. Appears Win7's relocation of the eGPU on bootup causes wifi to break. In this situaiton sometimes disabling then enabling wifi gets it running OK but didn't for me.

    Could try the DSDT override. The idea being Win7 may be able to just shuffle the eGPU straight into 36-bit PCI space and avoid doing the problematic shuffling around of devices in 32-bit space. If it does do that and leaves your wifi along then it will work in Win7.

    The solution I know works because I use it is to boot via Setup 1.x. I just do a iGPU+eGPU 32-bit PCI compaction and from that point on use the Setup 1.x : automated startup via startup.bat to coordinate my boot when using my eGPU. Then eGPU and wifi work all work great upon Win7's startup.

    At last finished my setup (I hope its final :D

    Composition is as follows:

    Notebook:
    Lenovo X220 I7 2640M 8Gb DDRIII 1333, HDD 320Gb 7200rpm (still waiting for 128Gb "Bulletproof" SSD (disappointed on I7 as it overheats and is unable to run without throtling even with cooling pad underneath it. Would sue lenovo if had time as this is really not worth the money. Ofcourse, I chose I7 mainly because of usb 3.0 but still :mad:

    Inno3D GTX 560 Ti 448 core
    FSP HEXA 500W PSU (my poor xbox 203W couldnt handle the Ti monster)
    PE4L 2.1a+

    More or less installation was plug and play.

    The results:

    I tested everything on external monitor so no internal benchmarks

    So far played Witcher 2 on 1980x1200 at high settings. FPS are fluid at 50 (just started, so maybe further in the game there will be some stuttering but so far runs smooth as silk.

    Alan Wake is as usually disappointment - at 1980x1200 only at low settings i get reasonable 35fps. Cant figure out how to make this game run reasonably on high settings :(

    As you can see I did some overclocking, running all the benchmarks in a row and playing Witcher 2 turned out rock solid. GPU temp max stays at 69C. Voltage of gpu unlocked till 1025 to achieve stable 900Mhz clock and 2000 mem.

    Maybe there is still room for OC but I dont want to push my luck :D

    The last on my to do list now is to get all this packaged aka enclosure. Will keep you posted on that :cool:

    So THIS is what I would like to see in the future from Villagetronic:

    Why don't you introduce a your version of 'DIY eGPU' hardware at a competitive price?
    To keep the business splitted from your main one, i can suggest a new brand like "VillageEco" (based on Eco = Economic version) simply keeping away all the "accessories" you provide with your core product and lowering the price of the PCB only solution.

    It's something that could easily mentioned on the first page of the DIY eGPU thread (as a competitor of BPlus) while keeping your original product on its place. The support would not be a problem as long as the development is based on the community needs.

    Considering the opportunity to join another segment of the market and become competitive against other players, I'd suggest to buy a commercial license for Setup 1.x to supply it with your solution. That would be a HUGE plus to boost sales.

    Please provide your opinion in order to achieve a satisfying quantity of "TODOs" that you would like to see implemented in a future, potential collaboration with VillageTronic.

    I have a vidock working with my 2011 macbook pro 13inch i5. It is connected using the sonnet echo TB adapter. So far, it works under windows 7 with an external monitor but does not work with mac os x. I have 8gb of ram, and its odd because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. There is a sonnet echo pro that pushes it to a 5gt/s connection. The boost I got was huge and I am able to play Battlefield 3 on high settings (compared to unplayable).

    NBR user "borealiss" accomplished the same using DIY eGPU hardware matched to the same Sonnect Echo TB-to-expresscard adapter. http://forum.notebookreview.com/apple-mac-os-x/649607-thunderbolt-graphics-works-macs.html . He and gave some technical details of how he overcame error 12. Worth reviewing all of borealiss' posts.

    Very nice. Those GTX560Ti-448 cards give impressive numbers.

    Now if the X220 is overheating may I suggest seeking a refund and purchase a (heavier, no-IPS) 2560P instead? It can be user upgraded to a i7-quad with no overheating issues. Installing a i7-2860QM (quad) would see twice faster cpumark results than a i7-2620M (dual). That's if you need that level of cpu performance.

    So far the performance seems nice (except the Alan Wake - could it be CPU bottleneck?), my only worry is that the cpu is getting very hot and stays at 97C during gaming. So far it haven't failed or maid BSOD or shut down. It just clocks down - throttles to not exceed that temperature.

    Only thinking if such high temperatures are normal and if not, how long will it last? I still have 239 days on warranty, so I guess we will see. If it does not fry itself up till that time I guess this kind of climate for that cpu is normal :D If it fails I hope the warranty covers fried cpus in such scenarios, dosen't it?

    And beside gaming, when I am working or take it away this small notebook is really comfortable/light and capable, not to mention excellent IPS screen, sturdiness and best keyboard ever.

    i try to understand the setup 1.x at the moment, because i think that it could be the last thing that would help me (because i can not deactivate the dGPU in bios)...but i dont know what i have to do.
    i read the whole thread and perhaps i found that what i should do (i was the guy that testet 2 external video cards but had real bad performance...perhaps because of the reason that my dGPU is active and becomes the optimus device...). I found this:


    dGPU[off] has compact failing to allocate an I/O port on Series-6 chipsets resulting in an error 12 [i do not get an error 12, because i did the dsdt override...but it seems as if the wroing video card gets the optimus card]



    Setup 1.10 adds the ability to disable a NVidia dGPU on a Series-6 chipset (call iport dGPU off in startup.bat) , a requirement if want to have x1.Opt working with a Series-6 Optimus notebook. However, switching the dGPU from on to off sees PCI compaction failing to allocate an I/O port to the eGPU. Instead compact completes providing a pci.bat output file but issues bridge error warnings.



    The workaround to eradicate an error 12 due to no PCI I/O port having been allocated is to select Configure.startup.bat->!edit then add a new line b/w 'call pci' and 'call grubdos' containing 'setpci -s 0:1c.{port number hosting your eGPU-1} 1c.w=20,20'. eg: if port2 is hosting your eGPU then you'd type:

    setpci -s 0:1c.1 1c.w=20,20



    --> so could this be the solution for my problem? and what do i have to do in this case?

    New to the eGPU community and was wondering if I could get some confirmations before making a purchase to extend the capabilities of my Lenovo Thinkpad W520. From what I've gathered so far, all I need to get this working in terms of parts is the bare PE4H from HIT for $91, a video card and a capable PSU. Am I missing anything?

    It would help if you get the Setup 1.x software and read the online help on how to use it at DIY eGPU Setup 1.x Help . You just need to boot it to the menu-based system and select Video cards->dGPU[off], the Chainloader mbr. Those can be added to your startup.bat so you don't need to navigate the menus everytime.

    Yes, you want PE4L 2.1b for your system to gain doubling of bandwidth over PE4H/PE4L 2.4/1.5. It's quite a noticable improvement in frame rate smoothness.

    Also I believe your bios allows you to disable the FX2000M so the NVidia driver would then use the (preferred) NVidia Fermi/Keplar eGPU in higher performance x1.2Opt mode plus give you the option of rendering to the internal LCD. So you don't need Setup 1.x which HIT provide with their hardware. So advise purchasing PE4L 2.1b from BPlus as HIT don't stock/sell it as yet.

    It's a 2x but of PCI 1.0 only, while the PE4L 2.1b is a 1x of PCI 2.0 so equal to a PCI 1.0 2x but with a single slot occupied :)

    The best you'd get from a PE4H 2.4 with your W520 is x1.1Opt. x2/x4 is no longer possible on it's Series-6 chipsets (2nd gen i-core) due to Intel locking them down. Series-5 (1st gen i-cores) was the last that we could attempt x2/x4 on with the right port layout. Kizwan's i7-720QM Studio 1557 + HD5870@x2 being a good example.

    PE4L 2.1b will give you x1.2Opt. It's cheaper and faster than PE4H 2.4 so it's a no brainer. Can add some support base if want more sturdiness.

    I hope I am not too late to the discussion here. I also hope that my opinion will be taken into account although please do note that I am not trying to offend anyone and these are just my thoughts.

    I have read all the posts relating to the VillageTronic collaboration. I sure do have to say that it took good amount of time to read and I had to take a good number of notes (my pen has even decided to give up writing at some point) so that I don't forget to mention all of my thoughts. I am a constructive thinker and being this late to the discussion I have lots of info to base my thoughts against at.

    Firstly I will say that it is appreciated that VT (VillageTronic) has decided to show up here and share his piece of mind. It is also good that Nando decided to take this conversation here as this involves community as well. And I am thankful to Mr.Chen for disclosing the full content of the e-mail, which gave more light on the situation here. Now, Mr.Chen, you shouldn't take Nando's first post to the heart, as all of those words were probably based on speculations and not facts, and you did good job at trying to clear them up.

    Ok, onto the topic. Damn, this is going to be long.
    I will start off with the Setup1.x software. Basing on the posts I have seen here, its seems try that there some grudge between VT and DIY project. Any one that came here with ViDock got instantly sent out the door back to VT for support. And even the first page tells ViDock holders to go back to VT. For one thing, I think it is good that it does so, because people that payed that price should be getting support from VT and not from here. But I also think that DIY should offer support for the Setup software regardless of the Vidock holder or the DIY, since it was purchased here. But we are talking about payments again. Now, going back to when Setup Software was free, VT did what you would expect them to do, tell people to get the software here and as Mr.Chun has stated, it was all under license agreement. And people did what you would expect them to do, not to pay for the software because they have already payed for the ViDock. But in a sense, that is what you would expect from anyone really, in regards to a free software with "feel free to donate" buttons, usually people would not want to pay. Again, but, there is still some fault on VT side, as they should have negotiated on this matter earlier. I believe its just a matter of mutual misunderstanding. About the Software's donations money, I believe that all of it goes toward further development (unless I am wrong), and I believe its the right move. If it was free, it probably wouldn't be as good and useful as it is now and wouldn't be able to support newer systems (not many people are motivated to do things for free for years).
    Now onto "The Price". It appears to me people aren't really aware of how things are with companies and all that business. It also appears that not many people took Business Studies classes. I will clarify on that a little bit. Firstly, there are things such as manufacturing costs (components cost) and these make the starting price and everyone seems to understand that. But there are other things such as operational costs. These include rent, lights, gas, water, wages and salaries. And those also have to be covered in the price of a unit, but unlike the manufacturing costs, they are spread over all products sold. This means that, the more products you sell, the smaller the portion of that cost each unit has to cover. In terms of numbers, if operational cost each month is, lets say, $50 and if we only sell 1 product per month, means the price has to be (components cost + $50), and if we sell 50 units each month (components cost + $1). This is the basic gist. Returning back to VT, they have big operational costs. Firstly R&D(Research and Development) department doesn't bring any profit what so ever and costs lots of money to run. Secondly, they manufacture, means people have to be payed for work. And that is not even close to covering all the costs. And based on how DIY is successful, VT is bound to have small number of units sold, hence the price is so high. And people are comparing VT to BPlus. Now compare it again with this knowledge. I will outline some of it. BPlus has a good number of products and they are selling PE4H/L like hot cakes. Hence, why they can make them cheaper, as operational costs are spread over a big number of products sold. In fact, they would be the ones making some nice profits for DIY eGPU project.
    Good point was raised about other companies coming into play on eGPU market. And I believe it is true, they will come. Which is why I think it is a WIN / WIN if DIY and VT collaborate. Firstly, it will give a nice foothold for VT on the market due to something called "Brand Loyalty" and "Word of Mouth". People will buy from the same place if the first product they bought from it was satisfying, and will buy fro a place with good customer reviews. Secondly, it profits DIY, as DIY gets the features it needs instead having to adjust to manufacturers. A good example of that would be Intel. They are making ThunderBolt to push you into buying a new laptop and then they will want you to pay good money for the TB adapters because they see that you will be getting too good of a service to only pay $100 for it. This brings me onto another thing. Intel and Nvidia are already interested in this DIY project. One reason to believe that is obvious, the TB port. But the other one is that Nvidia is not further locking down Optimus. They are still introducing their iGPU dGPU combos for which I see absolutely no reason. Intel's VGAs are absolutely worthless. It would be easier for Nvidia to just wok some more on Power Management of the GPU, which is as simple as updating drivers, and they would be getting the same battery life as non iGPU dGPU laptops. Instead, Nvidia sees this DIY eGPU as increase in profits. You firstly buy a laptop with Nvidia's dGPU, basically paying them, and then you buy a desktop GPU, extra sales. I wish AMD would get a smell of this and come up with their Optimus equivalent technology and unlock it for everyone. Then we would start see Nvidia showing more care in this project and maybe even fully unlock Optimus, which in term would confirm that they are showing interest in this.
    Returning back to the ViDock's Price. There really is not much difference between. I don't know about US prices so I will use Japanese ones equivalent in US Dollars. PE4L (ViDock's equivalent) is around $100 + ATX PSU, cost me another $100, total of around $200 without a nice enclosure and portability. ViDock is priced around $250 and has enclosure and is all built for you into a nice package which is more portable, basically everything is done for you. It all comes down to about the same price so I don't see many reasons for people to cry about it. I can bet those that cry, never accounted for the PSU cost. And do not forget, that it is suggested here, by Nando himself, to buy Vidock if you want a neater solution for about the same price.

    I believe Mr.Chen has stated in this thread that VT pays 50% of the Setup1.x software license, so its $12.5 for it's users.

    As for the suggestions toward the Collaboration, i think VT should try providing a DIY solution. Firstly, it would boost their sales, and secondly it would give us a cheaper and better DIY solutions with features DIY wants to see, possibly with addon features.

    P.S. I wish MXM eGPU was available. This would really make it interesting to see how laptop manufacturers would react.

    P.P.S. Didn't bother checking for spelling mistakes. It took way too long to write this, hence too tired to check for any.

    P.P.P.S Would be nice to see those briefing between Nando and SimoxTav, or maybe even included in them. I would like to think more over this Collaboration thing and maybe even contribute some more, if there is room for it.

    I would firstly like to say that thank you for understanding. Mr. Chen doesn't make enormous profits on vidocks sold, and its simple logic that as the sales go up, the price will come down. I personally like both products, but I think that many DIY users need to get off the hate-train and realize that they are practically killing off a company that started external gpus. Vidock came out in the early 2000's, and was the only egpu available. Why do you think its called DIY-Vidock?

    I also think that price is the only reason people buy diy-egpus instead, but Mr.Chen would really like to lower the price of the Vidock because he has always been concentrated on the users; its hard to lower the price when more than half of your sales are being taken away by a product that has cable defects and is a very stripped down version. If Mr.Chen were to come out with a diy-vidock alternative, he could price it around $70 because he wouldn't have to worry about a sturdy case, power supplies, and added ports.

    And I think everyone should be reminded this; we are all one community that shares the same goal (at least we should be). Nothing wrong comes from joining forces to use both sides knowledge to continue and evolve external graphics solutions.

    Hello again everyone (it's been a while since I've visited). I've been wanting to get an eGPU for a while now, but didn't really have the time. I got motivated again the other day when I was playing the Diablo III beta and getting depressed at how low I had to turn all the settings to get it playable on my 1080p monitor... (if that's not motivation for you, I don't know what is) :D

    Just need to clarify a few things:
    I have a Dell Latitude E6420 with the i7-2720QM, 8Gb RAM and the NVS 4200M, which is more than sufficient for most of my work - programming, CPU heavy stuff, etc. I only game very rarely, and since I basically live on my Laptop anyways, I figured I didn't want to go spend the money/effort to get me a modern desktop. Originally I was looking at the ViDock, but they're hellishly expensive and their website didn't inspire confidence ... plus, I normally do things myself anyways :) . From what I can tell, I have ExpressCard 2.0, so I'll be wanting to get something like the recommended PE4L ( PCIe Adapter ver2.1 ) ... but I'm in the U.S., and I read in this thread that buying from HIT would be preferable. Do they have the part I need, and can someone provide a link? Also, just to clarify since I haven't messed with these things in years: the adapter runs the card in 1x mode to suit the 1x interface (judging by the fact that it's only using the first row of pins..)

    I was watching some videos and noticing a lot of micro-lags and stutters while gaming. I'll definitely be going direct to an external monitor, and I would hope to avoid these issues... I would have thought that the rest of my system should be beefy enough.

    I would like to use only NVidia drivers... I was reading that they now support Optimus optimization with eGPU's natively now?

    I was going to eventually get something to this effect:

    though I'll test the chip with my old 7600GT.

These behemoth threads make finding every little detail a trick, so I do apologize for what's been covered. I tried to read as much as possible.

    Also, have you read the "How does a DIY eGPU differ from a Villagetronic" on page one?

    Lastly, it baffles me that you claim to have business education and yet suggest that VT should change their entire business model..
    Not to mention that you want them to invest time & money in R&D that will somehow produce "cheaper and better DIY solutions".
    btw those are not tangible/actionable terms.


    IMO if anyone thinks that:
    1) VT didn't suggest this because they want to overcome Error 12 on the cheap.
    AND/OR
    2) We (the community) stand to gain anything from the collaboration.
    you're wrong.



    1) How do you know how much profit VT actually makes? And why should we care?
    2) If VT is dying out it's because of the global market, not DIY EGPU. Have you noticed how powerful laptops have become since ViDock came out?
    3) So because (you think) he's a nice guy we should all buy his stuff? It's called DIY for a reason. Just like some people install Linux and others OC their CPU; it could be because of cost savings and it could be for many other reasons.
    4) If you're saying that DIY EGPU is faulty %50 of the time (its not), and yet somehow takes away sales from a "commercial quality" product it probably suggest that the commercial product is crap or too expensive.



    I've yet to see a single, realistic, benefit for the collaboration that didn't borderline overly optimistic wishful thinking.

    Laptop development has come pretty far but it still lags behind desktop parts. If you look at the charts at notebookcheck you can see that.
    Only things like mobile SLI or CF cards can come close to desktop performance, but if you want that...you will need at least a 17 inch chasis. I don't see any mobility in that.
    On the CPU front, the i7 is pretty much an i5 on the desktop.
    So there is still a long way to go.

    Meandering over to the ViDock facebook page to see if Hubert is still around upon which I see what's on his mind:

    When it says "I heard on hearsay", " notes in the community" I wonder where the source was? Now it has already been discussed on here as part of troubleshooting steps on how Fermi can help some systems that cannot accomodate 256MB pci-e space but support Fermi's smaller fragmented space, detail of which Hubert can find it he wants.

    So then I take it then we are being actively observed from the sidelines by Villagetronic support Ninjas and the head himself. Do our findings become their findings? What about their findings? Have there been any public ones and did any of them help us? I already see a major lopsideness there.

    I think a DIY eGPU (HIT/BPLUS) versus everyone else pros/cons chart is in order with price and 'for-profit' / 'non-profit' being major criteria. Then we can evaluate if it's at all possible to get VT to make something that fits on the 'non-profit' side and is in some way better than what we already have. SimoxTav is already doing some work there on the VT collaboration proposal summary (SimoxTav)

    I have no interest in supporting or endorsing his 'for-profit' products other than a link to them so users can explore them as an alternative to the DIY eGPU hardware for perhaps other features that may be of interest.

    Now if profit is so important then why not have a community based distribution model for it? Contributors could be equitable shareholders. Then there would be direct benefit from putting time into his existing 'for-profit' ViDock "community-based" product/project.

    ASSUMPTION:
    I studied economics and I'm actually a junior sales manager with *a bit* of experience in P/L analysis (nevertheless in an electronical division :D). What Wolf_vx says is basically correct, there are other costs beside the operational ones called SUNKEN costs that raise the price for the final customers, but while I can agree on Hubert about the difference in the solution provided by them (PSU + PCB + Enclosure) + (R&D + Logistics + Operational Costs) + (Margins) against the competitor ones (PCB) + (R&D + Logistics + Operational Costs) + (Margins), i would say there must be changes in the vision and so on in their product if they want compete in THIS market.
    The eGPU market is a niche one, made by the most part of appasionates that has a mid to high knowledge on how a PC works and how to achieve the target (the others focus on gaming notebooks or come here with the idea to "resurrect" an old notebook but they're a small amount).
    And then there are for sure some people with *over the top* knowledge like kizwan, khenglish, nando and others (based on their past experience on the product and on their personal background).

    THESIS:
    We're not talking about how VillageTronic should do their core business, but if they want a suggestion, mine is about to transform their product to a modular one like the DIY one (to easily manage these sunken costs extending their range of products). and if I intended correctly Hubert said that is the road they would like to follow with the community, so the path is IMHO correct. I'm skeptical about the choice of a "not so common" connector that depends on the manufacturers will

    Today they offer only EC2C connection, power limited solution and while technically speaking it could have its appeal because of the good manufacturing process (enclosure, details etc), but in this community made of people that swap they GPUs, make tests, use mPCIe, find solutions and so on, simply doesn't fit well.

    It's like the approach of Apple Vs PC; none is the best, there are simply different approaches. You want everything working out of the box? Then go for Apple, you want to tweak? Go for PCs. The main difference here is that since TODAY, Villagetronic never had a 100% working solution out of the box, so the major benefit that would justify a "margin" is simply non existant because the "solution pool" is mainly focused on the achievement reached here on the board where the passion and not the turnover leads the "product development". With no Setup 1.x utility we should have a low compatible range of notebook but no more damage, but Villagetronic would have many more problems of incompatibility (that leads to RMAs and so potential losses).
    So considering this is the scenario, i don't see ways for a WIN/WIN collaboration other than having a newer product developed with the community (like the VillageEco I suggested) to have the support here on this product that would grant benefit to the community due the lowering of the price thanks to the competitiion, or the purchase of the commercial license of the Setup 1.x if they want to provide it with their product, but leaving the board splitted from their business.

    Then I am sorry I have to say this. You are either a pessimist or you have over studied business. IMHO, you are a combination of both. Plain criticism won't get things anywhere. It's tough to be creative, but we just have suck it up go with it if we want it move somewhere. No offense there though.

    Firstly, I did mention I used equivalent prices but I guess you missed that part. Its true that electronics in Japan does cost more but its comparable. A word of advice, check and confirm before claim.

    Question back at you, did you? Or even better, did you read posts made by Mr.Chen? In detail?
    It appears to me that you tend to neglect information posted. Firstly, (obviously claims with no info to back up) is that he did mention that he already has RnD working on some eGPU solution (reconfirmed with posts above). Secondly, his business needs to survive, so instead of just continuing to make product, which just barely makes him to turnover, it would be smart for him to adjust their business model. They are not throwing away eGPU to to make cigarettes, but just need to adjust their product for it to bring profit.

    In any case, I don't want to turn this into flame war, so I am done discussing it. Please, Do NOT take offense.

    Hmm... I should maybe highlight something here.

    Careless reading sometimes brings such misunderstandings. *Sigh*

    I guess we can interpret this as Nvidia showing some investment into eGPUs. I doubt desktops have problems with resource allocation and considering the age of the Fermi cards, it was probably all thanks to DIY eGPU efforts. But on the other hand, it might well be Nvidia is just screwing around with us. Who knows.

    Will try giving it some thought at a later point. Too sleep deprived to do it today, as mentioned.
