I corrected my question, it's the 12V led stopping not the GND led (no GND led).
I also managed somehow to make it boot in windows, but right after the 'Welcome' loading screen stops the PSU and reboots. Any help please?

Oh, yes, you are right
I failed

Is it possible , did someone try ? -
Yes toto29620 I think it is possible.

There isn't a return policy on the laptop. I thought about building an eGPU after the fact anyways. I can access the wifi card from underneath the laptop, and I already have a plan for the enclosure and such.
How does this look for what I need to buy?
EVGA GeForce GTX550ti
Newegg.com - EVGA 01G-P3-1556-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti (Fermi) FPB 1GB 192-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
PE4H-PM3N
PE4H (PCIe passive adapter ver2.4)
And maybe an Xbox PSU that I'll mod, or I'll just buy an actual PSU.

Looking forward to seeing your mPCIe implementation. The extender is unnecessary as you'll be purchasing a PE4H-PM3N 2.4 which already comes with a detachable mHDMI cable.
I don't recommend a GTX550Ti (192 cores) give a GTX460-1GB (336 cores) is available s/h for less money, gives more performance and works with a 160W or less PSU like the XBOX 360 you've earmarked.
It's probably a WWAN slot with only the USB pins connected so the eGPU could never work as it needs the pci-e lines wired. A basic visual check is see if there are tracks running off pins 23, 25, 31, 33 (pci-e TX/RX) Those tracks also have to be routed to the I/O chip. OR swap the wifi into it and see if it is detected.
Can you do a DM4-1160US i5-450M 2.4 mPCIe implementation DIY eGPU experience post? That was a popular 14" consumer notebook so others could then leverage from your pioneering work for that system. -

Content improvement project: DIY eGPU Setup 1.11a giveway
updated 5-2-2011
To celebrate we can have a Setup 1.11a (next release) giveaway, the only thing I have to giveaway when running such a lean project. So the deal is any significant contributions to the DIY eGPU project will get a free copy of Setup 1.11a with full approval from HIT.
So the question is what contributions would be required and does anybody want to volunteer with an ETA for it's delivery?
Already completed - done in response to this callout:
* sticker template to badge your DIY eGPU or enclosure -> SimoxTav has made one.
* How to fix common DSDT compile errors when performing a DSDT override? ( kizwan)
* Hackintosh discussion is now allowed on here so we have http://forum.notebookreview.com/gam...-cards/660311-diy-egpu-macos-experiences.html (timohour).
* DIY eGPU vs others hardware comparison -> draft #2 done on 5-4.
* DIY eGPU or external graphics subforum. Done. See e-GPU (External Graphics) Discussion
Other mini projects that come to mind
* front page rework/cleanup. Other than the performance and compatibility table, the rest can be modified as is necessary -> lazyboy has volunteered to do a draft.
* wiki FAQ: see front page rework/cleanup one point up for an alternative.
* DIY eGPU vs gaming notebook dGPUs videos. SimoxTav wrote me:* new volunteers for quicklinked content from the first page to manage. Eg: modded drivers, SB/IVB notebook list.
* others as suggested by readers of this thread . . .
And with Setup 1.x itself, some assistance:
- improved DIY eGPU Setup 1.x help documentation as found at DIY eGPU Setup 1.x Help (Palda), v:\htmlhelp on the Setup 1.x image or archived at htmlhelp-4-29-12.rar
- A friendlier installer
- to have the leverage to make it free again would require a replacement for the HIT-provided compact software that does the PCI compaction. Any C coders want to try?
Concluding remarks
if there is interest then I'll formalize these points with the detail, ETA and owner for each so it does become a proper project.Last edited by a moderator: May 7, 2015 -
Does HIT ship to canada? How long would it take? I want to get it before diablo3 launches..

Can someone please help me troubleshoot?
I have a Lenovo X220, Core i5.
PE4L 2.1a ( PE4L ( PCIe Adapter ver2.1 ))
GTX 560 Ti
And I had a Corsair 750W PSU lying around.
I plugged everything in, that is, power to both the PE4L and the GTX 550 Ti, and insert the Expresscard in. SW2 is at 2-3, and SW1 is at the 1 position. I have D1 and D3 LED on. When I turn on the SWEX, the fans on the GTX550Ti just spins, but it is not detected. I tried going to sleep and wake to no avail. Am I doing something majorly wrong here? Thanks for the help guys. -
I had to cannibalize my EC2C, so the sticker above it was lost. I created a replacement sized 58mm x 24mm in order to cover the remaining glue:
I didn't had the adhesive film so i used transparent plastics but it's only a prototype. To anyone who want to print it, here there is the template (250ppi).
The final result is similar to this (the reflective effect is different once you you transparent adhesive film)
To use it, simply print it in full page scale and it's of the right size for the EC2C.
I'm planning to make a small version to be added as a sticker on the enclosures -
here's how I do it with X220, PE4L2.1b and 560 Ti :
0. Initial state : everything powered off
1. Plug Express card
2. Power on egpu
3. Power on X220
Hope this helps -
i would like to make the same thing, to replace blue by yellow, but i'm not good with photoshop, if someone can make it

hi everybody
i need help to find a laptop for eGPU.
I need a configuration with expresscard and should de Nvidia graphic card inside.
Cpu should be Sandy or Ive Bridge and screen at least 1600x1050
thank you for your help -
If you like the object itself, colorize it is an easy job
tell me the color that does match better your case and if you want gradient on it ^^
I'll think to do the rest

Can someone explain to me how does the "GPU-Xpander for laptops" works?
You can have dual GTX 295 which is 4 gpus. So is it splitting the PCMCIA bandwith? Which i think it runs at x1 then 2.0 standard. -
wouldn`t it be possible to upload this program without the pci compaction?
in my case for example i did not need this compaction / if i tried it, it didnt work....
so perhaps it would be possible to upload a "light" (free) and a "pro" (paid) version...? -

I have been running a GTX550Ti Setup with my X220i (i3-2310m, 2x4GB 1600MHz) for quite a while now. I would like to share my Experience:
Before my GTX arrived, I testet the Adapter (PE4H v2.4) with a GeForce 7600GS, just to see if it works. I connected the Adapter and powered my System up and it worked right away when connected to my external Monitor. (1920x1080).
A few days later I finally received my Zotac GTX550Ti. (1GB GDDR5 192bit).
It cost me only 100€, while a GTX560Ti would have cost me double the amount.
However, I immediately ran into some Problems. When I switched to my external Monitor, it kept saying that no Projector was detected. It took me a while to figure it out. In the end, all I had to do was set the ExpressCard Speed from Automatic to Generation1 in the BIOS. After doing that I continued with the Installation of the 297. Optimus Drivers. (Beta at that time)
I chose it because it already hat the compression ability and could drive my internal Display by cloning, thanks to Optimus.
I would like to say one thing right away: The GTX550Ti is extremely Silent together with my 300W PSU that I had left over from previous Desktop Builds. The Fan always stays on the lowest Level!
To make sure it really works, I started FlatOut 2 which lets you choose which GPU you want to use. The GTX550Ti showed up and I started the Game. It ran completely smooth with 32xCSAA, so I figured it works!
Next I ran 3DMarkVantage and got around P8500 Points as a score. With a better Processor (i5 instead of i3) I could have gotten around 9000-10000, since the Benchmark combines the GPU and CPU Score.
After that I ran 3DMark11. I got a Score of ~P1540 which I think is pretty good. Again, you have to consider that the i3-2310m is not the strongest CPU out there. (only 2,1GHz)
Both Benchmarks ran quite fluidly, although Vantage of course reached much higher FPS. There was only little lag in 3DMark11.
Then it was time to test some real Games. Age of Empires 3 runs at 60 FPS with maximum Details. (Due to VSync)
Since the HD3000 can do that as well I tried running Skyrim. I used maximum Settings and FXAA @ 1920x1080.
The Result was quite good. It ran smooth pretty much all the time. I didn't check the FPS, but I guess they are roughly around 25-40 in the open World. It can drop below 25 in some big Cities like Solitude, but overall, it is very playable and lots of Fun.
In Dungeons you of course get 60FPS+, but I weirdly got some heavy lag at some specific points. This can't be down to GPU Power so I am guessing it's the Bandwith limit showing its effects. It not disturbing though and I have only encountered it very few time to this point.
So Skyrim is definitely a good Choice. If you want even higher FPS, don't forget: Those were maximum Settings. With only high Settings you might see some minor FPS improvements. At Medium Settings, you should witness some major increase in FPS.
I have also tested NFS Hot Pursuit (2010). At maximum Settings with 4xAA @ 1920x1080 I got no lag whatsoever. I did experience some "Micro Lag" though, which is probably down to Textures that need to load. (Once again, limited Bandwith)
Anyway, I am very happy with my Setup. I can run all the Games that I have at maximum Details and didn't even have to get another Desktop, just for some gaming. Upgrading my GPU is also an easy Task. This way, I will always have enough performance for any of my Games. -
Thanks, the color is lemon yellow

How to fixed DSDT errors?
(Link: DSDT Override for Error Code 12 Workaround)
In this section I want to cover the common errors you get when trying to compile your DSDT. The one you'll usually get is when you try to compile the DSDT, even with untouched/unedited DSDT, you get a lot of errors, probably 100++ or 200++ errors like this:-
The ones that get our attention is Object does not exist errors. Object does not exist means the object is not accessible but since there are a lot of errors, something else in play here. To find the actual offending codes, just need find an error called parse error. Using the example above, we found first parse error error:-Code:Intel ACPI Component Architecture ASL Optimizing Compiler version 20100428 [Apr 28 2010] Copyright (c) 2000 - 2010 Intel Corporation Supports ACPI Specification Revision 4.0a Maximum error count (200) exceeded dsdt_CALPELLA.dsl 3902: If (PICM) Error 4064 - iasl.exe compiler doesn't like IF/IF-ELSE statement outside control method (e.g. Method (...). What we can do is by moving this IF statement to _INI control method. This is what _INI control method usually look like, this is also where _OSI (Operating System Interfaces) object is located:-Code:If (CondRefOf (FPED)) { FPED () }
Just move the offending IF statement to _INI control method, like this (put it after _OSI IF statement):-Code:Scope (_SB.PCI0) { Method (_INI, 0, NotSerialized) { Store (0x07D0, OSYS) If (CondRefOf (_OSI, Local0)) { If (_OSI ("Linux")) { Store (0x03E8, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2001")) { Store (0x07D1, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2001 SP1")) { Store (0x07D1, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2001 SP2")) { Store (0x07D2, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2006")) { Store (0x07D6, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2009")) { Store (0x07D9, OSYS) PHSR (0x92) } } }
That's it. You now successfully fixed this. When you try to compile again, you will get less error than before.Code:Scope (_SB.PCI0) { Method (_INI, 0, NotSerialized) { Store (0x07D0, OSYS) If (CondRefOf (_OSI, Local0)) { If (_OSI ("Linux")) { Store (0x03E8, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2001")) { Store (0x07D1, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2001 SP1")) { Store (0x07D1, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2001 SP2")) { Store (0x07D2, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2006")) { Store (0x07D6, OSYS) } If (_OSI ("Windows 2009")) { Store (0x07D9, OSYS) PHSR (0x92) } } If (CondRefOf (FPED)) { FPED () } }

An example:-
Let say the complete code is like this:-Code:dsdt_CALPELLA.dsl 4094: 0x00000000, // Length Error 4122 - ^ Invalid combination of Length and Min/Max fixed flags
What you need to do is updating the Length value using this formula:-Code:DWordMemory (ResourceProducer, PosDecode, MinFixed, MaxFixed, Cacheable, ReadWrite, 0x00000000, // Granularity 0xFED40000, // Range Minimum 0xFED44FFF, // Range Maximum 0x00000000, // Translation Offset 0x00000000, // Length ,, , AddressRangeMemory, TypeStatic)
So, after correcting it, the code should look like this:-Code:Length = (Range Maximum - Range Minimum) + 1 Example:- Length = (0xFED44FFF - 0xFED40000) + 1 = 0x4FFF + 1 = 0x5000
Code:DWordMemory (ResourceProducer, PosDecode, MinFixed, MaxFixed, Cacheable, ReadWrite, 0x00000000, // Granularity 0xFED40000, // Range Minimum 0xFED44FFF, // Range Maximum 0x00000000, // Translation Offset 0x00005000, // Length ,, , AddressRangeMemory, TypeStatic)

Error 4051 - Method local variable is not initialized
(* iasl revision 3.0a: Error 4050)
- An example:-
Let say the complete code is like this:-Code:dsdt_FJNB204_edited.dsl 10522: Return (Local2) Error 4051 - Method local variable is not initialized ^ (Local2)
It throw error because, if you look closely, the Local2 variable was never use. So, it's like Local2 = NULL.Code:Method (TMRW, 2, NotSerialized) { \_SB.FEXT.FUNC (0x1006, 0x11, 0x0105, Or (ShiftLeft (Arg0, 0x08), And ( Arg1, 0xFF))) Store (Zero, Local1) While (LAnd (And (\_SB.FEXT.FUNC (0x1006, 0x10, 0x0100, 0x00), 0x8000), LLess (Local1, 0x22))) { Sleep (0x1E) Increment (Local1) } Return (Local2) }
To fixed this error, just need to change Return (Local2) to Return (Zero).
- An example:-
The Store (Local0, Local0) means it store the content of Local0 variable into Local0 variable. So, they does nothing since the Local0 variable never been use (a.k.a. not initialized) in the code.Code:dsdt.dsl 2890: Store (Local0, Local0) Error 4051 - ^ Method local variable is not initialized (Local0)
To fixed this error, just need to change Store (Local0, Local0) to Store ("Local0", Local0) OR Store (Zero, Local0).

Where can we buy these PCI-E X16 risers? And where do we buy DVI dummys.

I'm about do decide which gpu to buy in order to set up and running my egpu!
There is already one implementation with my system, i.e. Jeykhob's X59SL. He used an Nvidia Fermi GTS 450, which requires (I think) 128MB of free PCI-space, without needing any PCI compaction.
The point is: I was thinking of opting for an AMD card, since my system can't handle optimus and AMD is better at x1 1.0 bandwidth. How can I find out if the system will be able to accomodate the 256mb of contiguous PCI space that AMD cards need? -
ill be glad to post my experience once i finish my project i wouldnt want to post it before its culminated. a couple of questions should i set the physx to the cpu or just leave it in the gpu, secondly my P3MN is twice as big as the space for it in the computer so its just sitting there at the moment i would like to know if there is such a thing as an extender or a solution so i can securely screw it down to the laptop.

This is the only way I've ever been able to power my eGPU. Anything else, such as plugging in during Sleep Mode, and my X220T will get a nasty infinite Power On/Off cycle until I remove the AC adapter and battery.
For the initial setup, though, I had to hotplug the eGPU into the Expresscard slot while Windows was already running for the default VGA driver to install. Restart -> Install Modded NVIDIA Drivers -> Restart -> done. -
To anyone who tried DSDT override but still unable to overcome the Error Code 12, try connect/power ON eGPU at "Starting Windows" screen, exactly when you see the windows logo animation. When you see the "Starting Windows" screen & the four dots emerged to form a windows logo, it is when windows loaded the DSDT override.

So I just bought a PE4L (V.2.4a) + PM3N to use on my netbook... Because its a netbook it doesnt have a expresscard slot.. So I chose the PCie mini adaptor..
Here's the thing firstly I assume the pcie slots on the PE4L are just expansion and no difference between them..so I plugged it into N1.. Secondly I am using a external power supply as my graphics card needs more power than just the pcie... My graphics card is 16x and I checked the new PE4L (version 2.4a specifically) supports 16x pcie... but I know the minipcie / expresscard only supports 1x.. (further to research)... But when I boot my laptop I get no display.. so I thought hold on does it output on the external display because I think you cant use the laptop screen unless using a special adapter so I plugged in my monitor and it did not show anything.. is this because its using on board? :S.. IDK, logically it would show on laptop screen.. I don't know if any of this requires any software(drivers) as it says in this guide it doesn't..
Can anyone help..
My spec for reference:
GPU - Gainward Geforce GTS GLH GS LE 450
PSU - Corsair 750W (With modules)
Netbook - Acer Aspire One D255e
The netbook has 2GB of RAM!
Any body point me in the right direction?... I mean I tried to make sense of this HUGE thread but I really couldn't, And I have tried to search for tutorials and couldn't find much at all, so It leads me to believe its apparently plug and play?
My issue.. I have not a clue how to use it.. here is my setup...

Hey Nando I have a quick suggestion about all the questions about DSDT 36-bit allocation. I feel that having a video tutorial on the DSDT page would benefit many users who are facing problems. There also seems to be enough users who could maybe whip up a quick video. Just a suggestion

This has been added to the FAQ section of the DSDT override and your How to fixed DSDT errors? linked in step 4. Brilliant stuff helping those users out too
Suggest you start your system, halt Win7 bootup and hotplug the *powered* PM3N into the mPCIe slot at that stage. What that does is overcome any mPCIe whitelisting and ensures the bios doesn't try to use the eGPU as the primary video display. If that all works, then look at using the 7/15s switch on the PE4H to effectively do the same thing as hotplugging-after-boot. -
Hooray, I won some eBay auctions for my eGPU.
PE4L for $40 CAD after shipping, and
GTX 460 768MB for $120 CAD after shipping.
I'm looking through my local classifieds for a PSU. Probably going with this Antec 550W modular for $40 CAD.
I can't wait for all of those to arrive! My Sony Vaio Z12's 330m bit the dust after being overheated (probably), so I haven't been able to use an external monitor over HDMI for the last 2~3 weeks!
I hope the set up isn't too difficult: I consider mysself decently computer savvy.

Sorry this is ever evolving. So stink'n confused :/
question if I did this eGPU mod for my G51j-a1 what are the performances gains? I have a GTX260m and i have an express slot but I have no clue on what speed it is. I remember reading ages ago it depends if its like a 1.x or something. I was figuring if I did this I would probably just use the lowest end or mid end desktop card because the bandwidth would be maxed with just that and use the least power. I thought a long time ago when I was reading this it was only a 50-100% gain over the GTX260m. The thread on converting mxm board is dead so i see no reason in trying to bother with that.
EDIT: so I have been reading...do i have 3.5GB limit? see picture.
Edit: is 3.5GB a good thing? I am confused one part sounds like you want less then 3.25GB is better and another part sounds like you want the most possible? Also I have 8 GB of 1333 so I am lost not sure if that is useful information.
Deleted dumb statement
EDIT: I am an idiot I have 1 express card slot....I was thinking of my super old laptop. Can I use PCI mini and express card for 2x? If I only do 1x is it even better then my 260m" or do i have to do 2x? or is 2x not even enough?
Also i noticed it said if you overlock FSB it improves so I am planning on getting the 920xm and overclocking so i guess i'll see a better performance with eGPU because of that.
Also if i understand this right if i do this my internal screen will run off of the 260m and the externals run off the eGPU? So I would have two gpus? So i could run a movie on internal and it wouldn't affect my games? If that is true can you use both for F@H?
please forgive me...this is totally over my head...trying to learn
Also its late lol...poor excuse I know
EDIT: look at this x2 doesn't do much for him...why? He has marginally better performance then my 260m...so is this pointless?...well i mean in certain tests. Vantage and 06 there is no change really between 1x and 2x and with games it is a fair bit of a change.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/7827331-post1815.html
Well read over it again and it is weird 3dmark 06 13k and vantage 12k and 11 is 3.5k or so. What is up with that? How is it that 06 and vantage are nearly the same? Also between 1x and 2x there was only difference in game and not in synthetic...why? Also his vantage score is way better then my GTX260m but some of his game scores are worse then my 260m...why? This is so confusing.
EDIT: ok i read overr several times the "2. Which video card do you recommend for best performance on my system?" Since i have a IS5 chipset can I do 1xopt? or should i do 2x with mini PCIe and express card? can you do 2xopt?Attached Files:

Please read Pre-Purchase FAQ >> 2. How can I check if my notebook is compatible with an eGPU?. Referring to the Pre-Purchase FAQ, check TOLUD on your notebook & compare it with the TOLUD table (available at Pre-Purchase FAQ >> 2. How can I check if my notebook is compatible with an eGPU?). Basically, as long as TOLUD is equal or lower than 0xD0000000 (3.25GB) your notebook will have enough 32-bit PCI space for a eGPU to work with 4GB or more of system RAM. Depend on your notebook, you probably need to do PCI compaction (using Setup 1.x) to allocate 256mb of contiguous PCI space. If TOLUD is higher than 0xD0000000 (3.25GB), you can try DSDT Override.
TOLUD 3.5GB is not good news but you can use DSDT Override. eGPU will be re-allocated to 36-bit bridge.
I think you're referring to x2 link setup. PCIe port on notebook only support PCIe x1 link. With x2 link setup, you will get extra bandwidth & this will reduced or even eliminate micro stuttering & lagging on games (depend on the games). To setup x2 link, you will need two accessible PCIe ports, either two mPCIe or combination of ExpressCard + mPCIe. x2 link only possible with either of these combinations:-
- PCIe port 1 + 2
OR
- PCIe port 3 + 4
OR
- PCIe port 5 + 6
For example, if ExpressCard is PCIe port 4 & one available mPCIe port is PCIe port 3, then you can connect eGPU (using PE4H) to them (two cables). Then just need to use Setup 1.x to set x2 link.
Usually when overclock CPU, PCIe lane also get overclocked. That's why it does help a bit. You're not necessarily have to use extreme edition processor, just need to have overclockable PLL/Clock Generator, you'll be able to overclock PCIe using SetFSB or similar tools.
Yes, you're correct regarding the screens. Yes also for the movie on the internal & games on external. I'm not really sure whether you can set F@H to use both GPUs at the same time or not though.
You can visit my eGPU experience post. I did a games comparison between x1 & x2 link setup.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 6, 2015 -

so can i do 2x.opt? also how do i check to see what ports my mini PCIe and express card are on?
Also mini PCIe is mPCIe right -_-
Also with having a GTX260m is 1x even worth while? please reread my previous post...the 1x and 2 x comparison is really confusing. has weird scores. I think i added them while you were replying. -
In my case, dGPU on my notebook is week, so eGPU does provide way better performance in games. Dirt 2 does running with less FPS. Look like Dirt 2 is bandwidth hungry games. However, with x2 link, Dirt 2 does running smoothly without lagging/stuttering. Basically, all games I tested running smoothly at x2. Yes, the FPS is not high but they doesn't drop too low either & remember they're on high settings.
CPU performance effect 3dMark06 score. The quad core most of the time during the benchmark is running at ~1.7GHz. These explained the score I got. Unlike 3dMark06, CPU doesn't effect (or only a little) with the Vantage score. ATiAMD card always score better in synthetic benchmarks but little bit different story on games.
Your notebook doesn't have active Intel HD Graphics iGPU. So, you can't do x1.Opt (Optimus) setup. (There is no such thing x2.Opt setup)
Yes, mini-PCIe = mPCIe.
x1 link definitely not worthwhile but x2 might be. You might want to see this Nvidia GTX470 @x2 link eGPU benchmark. Unfortunately I know only one eGPU implementation with Nvidia card @x2 link on Intel 5 series chipset notebook. -
thanks a lot, it's exactly what i would like to make

yea the only thing the 2x eGPU would help with is newer games....its weird that older games have this weird bandwidth issue. It is hard to say if its worth the effort to do the eGPU because i would have to pull out my wifi card to do a 2x setup. The performance would only help with newer games, which would be awesome. Although, i have to do the registry editing, which i have never done and its confusing to me. I get i think 6k vantage so it would help with newer games but man this will be a pain. plus my laptop would be unmovable because of the bottom of the case having the mPCIe slot used for it. It is debatable if its worth it....

Thanks kizwan! I know my TOLUD is C0000000, that is 3GB.
The point is: I had tried setup 1.x, when it was freeware, but it always hanged, so I suppose it doesn't work with Sis chipsets. Can you confirm this?
If setup 1.x is not compatible, it means no PCI compaction, I guess. -
Yes, it's though decision whether it's worthwhile or not. eGPU will definitely allow you to play newer games on high settings, probably with capped FPS but still playable on high settings. Yeah, I agree x2 link setup will make your notebook unmovable. Well, if you want to go mobile, it is pretty easy to disconnect the cables, put the wifi card back & closed the cover...but yeah, it is a lot of work especially if you need to do this regularly. The best or preferred notebook for eGPU if it have active Intel HD Graphics/3000 iGPU & also have ExpressCard slot. If you have SB notebook, it will be much better since it support PCIe rev 2.0 (10Gbs concurrent bandwidth). Also not to forget Thunderbolt eGPU, hopefully the specification+chip is publically available soon.
Even though I have two notebooks, I usually use my Dell for work because the most important thing is the screen, it's bigger (15") than my Asus (14"). It useful when running VM & remote connections. So, using eGPU on my Dell is challenging. I do not play games a lot, only BF:Bad Company 2 which actually can run well at x1 link (connected to ExpressCard) with little lag & stutters at some scenes (high settings + 1080p). Of course, with x2 link it will run much better. Probably I should get a Nvidia Fermi graphic card instead & use eGPU on my Asus since it have Intel HD Graphics. With Intel HD Graphics, Optimus setup will be possible & the performance will be similar to x2 link, sometime better.
I can't confirm since I don't have notebook with SIS chipset. You probably don't need PCI compaction. Jeykhob's eGPU setup also doesn't need PCI compaction. -
Yes, I know. But he was using an Nvidia Fermi vga (GTS450), which needs less PCI space than AMD cards: 128MB vs 256MB.
Maybe Nando knows if setup 1.x is compatible with Sis chipset or is only intended to work with Intel chipsets.
Nando, are you there!?

Sonnet just released their Thunderbolt solution for preorder @ 599,799 a pop. Ouch.

The pricing is kind of ridiculous given what it is. -
Still no word from msi?

Hello everyone! I've been working on building an eGPU for my Dell XPS 15 (L501x) using a GTX560. I've managed to get everything connected (via PE4H & PM3N), and my device manager recognizes the external card just fine. Where I've hit a wall, however, is in trying to overcome the error code 12.
I've used DIY eGPU setup 1.x in an effort to resolve the issue, but I'm hitting a few hitches:
As per the setup instructions I went to turn off my dGPU in the hybrid gfx portion of the menu, but found both it and iGPU to already be off. I am unable to toggle them back on in that menu, getting a message asking if they are txt-locked in the BIOS.
Hoping maybe that would be a non-issue, I tried skipping that step (as they were already off) and the only PCI compaction that works for me is 36-bit (again, as per the setup instructions) running 36-bit compaction on my dGPU and eGPU (iGPU not listed), then forcing 32-bit compaction on the eGPU.
Interestingly, chainloading from this leads to a resolution of the error code 12 issue for the GTX560 in windows, but ALSO leads to 800x600 resolution in (what appears to be) 16-bit color on my internal laptop monitor, with no options available to change to my external screen.
While I've spent the last week or so pouring through as much of the past 1005 pages of posts as I could stomach, I'm at my wits end. Admittedly, I lack the level of technical knowledge that so many of you clearly possess, but I would be extremely grateful to anyone who would be willing to work with me to help me overcome this last hurdle.
System specs:
Intel i7 cpu q 740 @1.73GHz
8.0GB RAM
GT435M iGPU
256GB SSD
Windows 7 x64
Any further information or screen shots will be provided upon request.
Thank you in advance! -
Guys. I have X220T+P4EH+GTX560 940*2400 and i bought new 27" WQXGA monitor. I know what P4EL 2.1 faster than P4EH, but is this difference cost 70$ for upgrade? I wainting USB 3.0 version but it will avaliable only in the end of 2012( In 2013 i think thunderbolt will be better than usb 3.0. And i know nobody now upgrade P4EH>P4EL 2.1. And nobody buy P4EH.

Hi kizwan,
sorry for the late answer to your solution. I had some work to do and the eGPU System wasnt reachable.
I tested your hint today with no success. Windows hangs the symbol starts connecting. Even if i disable all additional components like USB, WLAN and LAN error 12 still happens. But it works fine with only 2 GB Ram installed.
Anything else i can do?
