This GPU: ASUS - Graphics Cards- ASUS ENGTX570 DCII/2DIS/1280MD5
This PSU: Newegg.com - Antec High Current Gamer Series HCG-750 750W ATX12V v2.3 / EPS12V v2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Certified 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC Power Supply
What I want to know is:
1) To run on internal LCD, I believe display in BIOS needs to be set to ThinkPad LCD?
2) To run on internal LCD, am I supposed to connect the eGPU to the notebook via VGA/DisplayPort? Or does the ExpressCard slot already do this?
3) Which drivers do I need? Can I just install the one straight from the CD that was provided with the GPU? Or do I use one of these: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6542661-post1222.html? And if so, which one?

I'm having a problem and would greatly appreciate any help from you guys.
I'm working with a Sony Vaio VPCS13C5E (internal GeForce 310m), PE4H-EC2C (version 2.4a) and a GeForce GTX 560 (without Ti) from Zotac (2GB).
My system does not seem to detect the video card at all.
The thing is: When I try the same setup with an old ATi Sapphire HD3850, everything works perfectly fine.
I did a 36 bit root bridge DSDT override. I also noticed that when I switch the PCI delay with my ATi to 0 seconds my system will run into an infinite boot-and-reboot cycle (which can be solved by setting the switch to a 7 or 15 second delay). This is not the case when I use my nVidia card. So I suppose the problem is at pre-BIOS level.
What can I do to make my GTX 560 work? Any suggestions?
Btw: The nVidia card works fine if installed internally in a desktop PC.

1) I haven't touched that setting, but I would guess so.
2) Nvidia's Optimus tech will take care of moving data from the external GPU to the internal one via the PCIe bus.

Hi all,
After my success with my Z2 1.1opt eGPU.... I decided to unleash its potential with the newly released PE4L 2.1b PM060A which has a mPCIe plug.
So the laptop I've used, is a VAIO VPC-Z2 (HM67)
The eGPU is plugged on the wifi port, which is the port 1.
And I couldn't make it working at all
After more than 15 try... I couldn't not even get the eGPU detected.
I've tried many combinaison with the PE4L's SW1 & SW2, hotplugging etc..
(by the way, what is a cold and warm boot?)
With my first setup (PE4H 2.4a + PM3N) PM3N and PE4H SW1 were both set on position 1, other setting would make the Z chrashes or the eGPU not found. Once the eGPU is detected, I used to set gen1 speed and run a 32bits PCI compaction.
But with the new PE4L 2.1b it didn't help.
Also, with the PE4H + PM3N, if I power it before bios loading, the laptop would crashes. But that didn't even make it crashes with the PE4L 2.1b :/
On the mPCI-e adapter of the PE4L 2.1b, there's no SW1 (I think it's on the PE4L itself) maybe that's the problem ? since with the PM3N it wouldn't work on position 2-3 (7-15s delay)
Well I do not understand every terms, I'm sorry for not giving you a more accurate description of my problem.
[EDIT] Hypothesis : could the problem be from the CLKRUN signal being started before the GPU is attached ? Because as I said, to get my 1.1opt eGPU setup working I had to hotplug the PM3N, SW1 set on position 1 only. But I cannot do it anyone on the PM3N like addapter
here is a picture of the powered and plugged eGPU, only the first LED is lit. (setting SW2 on position 2-3 would make the 3rd LED orangish wether the eGPU is plugged or not.)
What can I do ?
And yes my GPU is looking weird, fans were dead so I've used standard 120mm fans

My setup:
- PE4L 2.1b with default 60cm cable, set to SW1: 2 and SW2: 2-3
- Lenovo X220 s i5-2520, 4GB RAM, 80GB Intel SSD mSATA + oem 320GB HDD, Win 7 64bit Prof OEM, BIOS 1.29 default settings
- GPU: Gainward GTX570 Golden Sample - default clock
- PSU: Corsair GS500
- Display: FullHD Samsung TV through HDMI or internal x220 display (1366x768 )
Setup was mostly painless. I use a full boot to detect, no problems with Optimus and no need to delay eGPU powerup. Hot plugging/standby does not work always, but it seems that x220 has problems with waking from sleep sometimes generally.
I guess this is a working x1.2Opt setup.

All 3Dmark test are done on free version with default resolution, otherwise 1280x800 where possible
1 - All Heaven test were stuttering even if the framerate should not hint it. Even tests on lower resolution and settings were similar.
2 - could not set 1280x800 even after reboot, don't know why. Used 1280x1024
3 - Benchmarks have only 1360x768 option on internal.
Games:
Diablo3 - no problem on full details 1080p, had some frame jumping issues, but using fixed 50fps helped.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - first few missions no problem on 1080p
Mafia2 - can run the benchmark on 1080p high details with around 50-60fps (lost the exact numbers). Has problems ingame even with less details, mostly in cutscenes or near water. Otherwise playable even on internal screen.
Just Cause 2 - tested first on internal 1366x768 and no problems on full. The same on 1080p also.
GTA IV - tested quickly only on internal 1366x768 and no problems on full detail, half max distance.

I'm new to the idea of eGPUs, but after reading up I bought a card, an ATX power supply, and the PE4L. I got everything in today, but I can't get it working.
If anyone has any advice or tips I would greatly appreciate it...
Here's what I'm working with:
Computer - Acer Extensa 5620 Win7 64 bit
Graphics card - XFX Radeon 6850 Double D Newegg.com - XFX Double D HD-685X-ZDFC Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card with Eyefinity
Power supply - Apevia 650W Java - Newegg.com - APEVIA JAVA ATX-JV650W 650W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Power Supply
The power supply should have enough power to run the eGPU from what I understand, it has +12V@15A on one 6-pin, and +12V@13A on the other 3 6-pins. That should be 180W + 156W when I have both 6-pins plugged into the card (the card has 2 6-pin inputs).
The power supply turns on and powers up the PE4L via the PE4L kit's 12V/5V cable, and when connected to laptop via EC2C and mini-hdmi I am able to access the USB port on the PE4L. I plugged in a flash drive I have and was able to read it.
I can't get the graphics card to turn on no matter what I do. It won't spin-up the fans at all. I'm thinking maybe I have a bad card? The box did come a little dinged up, but the card itself looks fine. I'll be able to test whether or not the card itself is bad tomorrow evening at my friend's place. I tend to doubt that the hardware is bad though and more realistically believe that it's a user error with the way I have it setup.
Is there something obvious that I'm missing? I thought I had done enough research through this thread to understand the requirements of what I'm trying to set up. I've tried all possible JP3 and JP4 closed/open combinations. It's really sad to have all of this tech sitting here and not able to utilize it!

you could bring your swex, then you only need to plug the pci-express wire, and power it on, it will be faster

Thanks for the response, however I'm having some issues. How will I know if the eGPU is doing the work and not the iGPU? Because I do not see any massive improvement in performance.
Also, the CPU still gets uncomfortably hot (>90 degrees C). I was expecting lower temperatures since the iGPU should technically not be working.
Lastly, I put the X220 to sleep, plugged in the EC adaptor into the slot with the eGPU powered and turned the X220 back on, it seems that some drivers were automatically installed, though I'm not sure which version. Do I need to override them? -
Here are the results of my troubleshooting today:
The PSU isn't the issue. It was able to power on the mobo and the GPU in my older desktop machine I used for testing. In fact, interestingly, it was able to power on the GPU with just a single 6-pin, even though the card had 2 6-pin inputs. So I don't think the issue is the power of the PSU. It should at least be able to turn on the fans of the GPU.
I don't think the GPU itself is the issue either, as in this setup it was able to be powered on. I didn't bother installed drivers or anything, I was satisfied to see that it could at least turn on. In all cases though, the GPU wouldn't turn on until the PCI slot it was attached to was getting power, naturally.
These results make me think that either my machine isn't recognizing it as a PCI slot somehow, or that the slot itself on the PE4L is malfunctioning. The TOLUD on my machine was 3.0GB, so I shouldn't need any DSDT override, correct (My machine does have 4GB Ram installed)? I also haven't ran Setup 1.x Yet. Although I didn't think I'd have trouble with getting it to power on before needing to use Setup 1.x. Am I mistaken in expecting that? I also don't think it's the mini-hdmi cable as I am able to access the USB port.

Hey so are you saying you're able to get your eGPU to work with your EliteBook 8460p? I ask as I am looking at getting a new laptop to do this and want to make sure I get one that can use an eGPU (and I love the specs of the 8460p).

Power on the eGPU and hotplug and let it auto detect (which is what you've done). Install the latest desktop drivers, which don't need any modding. Leave your eGPU powered on and shut down and boot your X220. Bam, internal x1.2Opt working perfectly.
If you want the eGPU to power the internal LCD, you need to boot the X220 while the eGPU is plugged in and running. -

More problems, however:
I got Setup 1.x running with a startup.bat that says pci_alloc_valid=yes [512MB], but in Win7, the eGPU shows as "Device cannot start (error 10)." Previously, when I got this error, I could just put the computer to sleep, power cycle the card, and it would pop up with error 12, which is where I was hoping Setup 1.x would fix my problems. Unfortunately, the sleep function is greyed out after applying startup.bat
I'm thinking now that it's my PSU, which is a measly 250W yanked from an old Dell. Thoughts? Computer specs follow:
Lenovo T410s switchable (some intel iGPU like 4500mhd and nvs3100m dGPU)
Intel Core i5 520m
8GB ram
PNY GTX460 OC 1GB eGPU
some crappy 250W psu

Your startup.bat should look like the following. If not, can edit it using startup.bat->!Edit it in Setup 1.x or open v:\config\startup.bat in Windows' notepad.Also recommend you check the 12V rail on your PSU. A 250W PSU might not have enough power. A reference GTX460 requires 160W so you'd want 12V/15W (180W) to run it comfortably. Good evening, I'm trying to install a nvidia GTX 560 OC eGPU with PE4L 2.1b, I have the software DIYeGPU-Setup-110b5, but I can not make windows detect it, when I turn it on get two leds on D1 green D3 orange.
I really do not understand are the first steps, do not know how to install the driver for the GTX (gives error that does not recognize the card). In DiY eGPU setup does not recognize the card when I try to optimize or something like that.
If anyone can help me I would be very grateful.

Did you try to turn on the computer, press F8 to pause Windows loading, connect the eGPU and then resume loading Windows?
For me installing the driver was just to download the Nvidia files from here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/6542661-post1222.html, overwrite the nvam file and install the drivers.
Unfortunately I can't help you with Setup 1.x as I don't use it -
Well the problem can't be the laptop, because, eGPU fans would spin even if it is not connected to your computer.
Hmm, did you connect the PE4L to the PSU ? (it's a floppy drive connector, there should be an adapter provided.)
If you did, then the problem, probably comes from the PE4L :/ contact hwtools and explain them.

I'm trying to find out if there is a difference between using a PM3N+PE4H or a PE4L. There shouldn't be any difference in performance, right?
The reason I ask is that the PE4L pretty much bypasses the use of PM3N as you can see in this photo:

Yes, I did connect the PE4L to the PSU, using the provided floppy adapter. It has the green LED light on that indicates that it is getting power from the external source.
I'm sad that it appears to be a hardware issue, but both the PSU and the GPU appear working in other setup, so the PE4L should be the weak link then.
I'll contact HWTools and hopefully get a replacement one soon.

With these settings, I get a warning before chainloading mbr saying that I have some devices that do not have pci_alloc_valid=yes (it currently says pci_alloc_valid=yes* [256MB]). Shouldn't I need to do compaction? If yes, which mode?

Good evening, I wonder if anyone can help me, and I managed to install the drivers for the eGPU (NVidia 560) install the driver 295.73 Verde I have this problem by following the steps of loading a video of x1.1Opt, when I enter windows or I do not get video (the external display is no signal and is placed inside black) or go into windows but using iGPU (in the device manager detects the NVidia card and intel but if I try to use the NVidia software tells me not I am using a screen attached to NVidia card)

Stupid question - did you to switch only to the external display after loading Windows? On my laptop it's the combination of FN+F5. And I hope you have eGPU connected to your external monitor - not your laptop

I have an old laptop that I would like to setup with an eGPU. However, I have Windows Vista premium. I get the impression that Vista causes some issues when trying to accomplish this. I simply want to know if it is possible to use a eGPU while running Vista?

PM3N + PE4H is a bit outdated now. It's only capable of PCI-e 1.0, but it was used for making X2 or X4 links. A PE4H X4 1.0 should provided similar performance to X1.2 opt. (1.2opt = X1 PCI 2.0 + Optimus compression which gives X2 2.0 or X4 1.0 performance. Optimus get engaged for X1 only.)
You will get X1.2opt only you have a Sandy or Ivy bridge notebook.
You can also use your internal LCD, but external LCD provide best performances. You could still reasonable use your internal LCD if you have a Sandy or Ivy bridge notebook, and an nvidia card because it provides Optimus bandwidth compression. ATi users can also uses internal LCD with some tweaks.
Arrandale and former generation notebook doesn't have a sufficient bandwidth for internal LCD uses. (With x1.opt you wouldn't get over 17fps on a 1920x1080 LCD and 33 on a 1280x1024.)
Khenglish noticed that setting color depth to 16 bits greatly increases the performance by freeing bandwidth. But just a few game would run in 16bit, mostly older one that already run very well. We didn't find yet, the solution to force 16 bit or 24 bit color depth which would not affect the colors quality.
Thunderbolt port uses X4 2.0 link on sandy bridge notebook (apple's only) but the upcoming laptop will feature X4 3.0 link.
X4 2.0 should gives 85% of X16 2.0 performances while X4 3.0 96 %

No idea mate. It seems that only somebody who knows how to use Setup 1.x can help you - I don't have/use it so I can't tell if there's something wrong with Setup 1.x, with your the drivers setup or maybe with something else.

I have an old Sony Vaio Z series, one of the VGN models. I've seen people do the eGPU's here with the newer VPC series but not the VGN so I'm just trying to get a few additional details.
This laptop has both a discrete and internal GPU and I wanted to know if the eGPU setup would work with it? Will setup 1.X be able to disable the dGPU?
I know on the newer VPC models you can hack the bios and disable the discrete GPU re this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/473226-insyde-hacking-new-vaio-z-advanced-menu-bios.html
But I'm not sure if you can do that on the older models and would probably like to avoid if at all possible. Thanks. -
I had a VGN too, if I remenber well if you switch on Intel 4500MHD then your dgpu should be desactivated. But I'm not sure, you have to check the presence of nvidia card on device manager after you've switched to intel.
If it is still there then you need the eGPU setup which will desactivate your dGPU and maybe a PCI compaction.
With the VGN-Z, luckily you should be able to activate optimus, seems it works with intel 4500MHD iGPU
but you will need a fermi or kepler based card. You will need to get an external display, running on internal display is useless for you, because your laptop can't provided bandwidth enough for returning back information to the internal LCD.
You should be able to run a X1.opt setup and I'd recommend you the PE4L 2.1b (expresscard version). -
I'm trying to set up a x1.2Opt with PE4L 2.1b using verde drivers 295.73, but although the card is recognized by the device manager IMG I have failed to make the external display to detect the signal, when I'm trying to enter the NVidia settings says "You are not using to display Currently attached to a nvidia gpu" IMG

I have Lenovo X220 and planning to setup PE4L (just ordered one) to use GTS450 GPU with it. I have two external monitors which I'll connect to GTS450 but is it possible to also use X220's own LCD somehow as third display? With internal GPU parallel with eGPU perhaps? Or with nVidia Optimus?
I have Lenovo T420 at work with two external displays and desktop spread on all of those and like it a lot. With T420's own nVidia NVS 4200M but on X220 this is not possible without eGPU. -
Ok, so I got to the point where my device manager detected my NVIDIA GTX460, but there still an error 12. So, I tried to do the DSDT override. After fixing some errors (but still have some warnings), it was able to compile and produce an *.aml file that was successfully loaded. However, now I get BSOD during win7 loading screen saying that the bios is not ACPI compliant. Any ideas?

I didn't! I'm quite sure that it is not possible since it is disabled by Dell BIOS. Optimus seems not to be able to mediate iGPU (that appears not to be used at all) and IPS screen, maybe for a 8 bit/10 bit incompatibility.
It doesn't exist an Optimus option to able/disable in Dell BIOS, but using a specific tool (Dell Client Configuration Toolkit) it is present as disabled.
Nobody, including me among M4600 and M660 owners, wants to try this procedure at own risks. -

Thanks for the quick reply. You're right, when its in stamina mode it only shows the intel gpu. I just assumed it was the same as it is in speed mode where it shows both. So hopefully that makes it a lot less complicated to get this working.
I probably don't need this now, but just out of curiosity, what does the PCI compaction do that you mentioned above?
And just to clarify, basically I
1. uninstall the existing sony hybrid drivers
2. install the newest intel graphics drivers
3. plug in the eGPU
4. install the nvidia optimus drivers (either the modded one's listed earlier in the thread or I download the newest ones and edit the inf file?)
Barring any complications that should do it? (and obviously there are some restarts etc.. in those steps as well)

I have a problem with my new egpu setup, in terms that it doesn't detect my graphics card at all.
I searched and read through loooots of postings and found a lot of similar problems, but no real solution, so maybe you can point me at the right direction.
Here's my setting:
Lenovo T420
- Intel integrated HD Graphics
- NVIDIA 4200M dGPU
- Bios Version 1.36
- 8GB Ram
- Win7 64bit
NVIDIA GTX 570 as eGPU
Ecostar 450W PSU
PE4L 2.1b with Smartcard Adapter
I just build everything up today and it seems all to work fine, except that windows doesn't recognize any new graphics card.
When I turn on the PSU and connect the PE4L with the graphics card, the gpu fan starts spinning. But when I then connect the Smartcard, nothing happens.
The USB port on the PE4L is working, if I attach a mouse it works right away.
I tried everything from suspending to reboots. Tried some different jumper settings, but nothing helped.
The eGpu just sits there, turns its fan and relaxes...

A Blue Screen Of Death with STOP code 0x000000A5 is ACPI related, and it seems that Microsoft is very strict when it comes to ACPI compliance. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314830/en explains some of the error codes, but not all of them.
Parameter1 == 0x00001000 means that some memory resource is claimed by ACPI that, according to memory tables, belongs to the OS. Parameter3 is the start address, Parameter4 is the length of the range. They can probably be found somewhere in the ASL code.
Anyone know what I did wrong..?
