Any firmware hacks for DVD drivers, I personally would not recommend. The only reason why you would need this would be to play not Region 1 DVD's. All DVD's released for North America & Japan use is Region 1. If you decided to play DVD's from another country then it may come in handy, but you could run software to bypass the DVD Region checking, I think it's called DVD Region Free downloadable here. This software will allow you to play the discs without making any changes to your hardware.
I've read horror stories of people running the hacks and later findout that some other features of their drive now will no longer work, eg. doesn't burn CD's, locks up, etc... I know this software works because my cousin bought the 24 Series on DVD in the UK and tried to use it in his Canadian bought notebook, but didn't work. I gave him this software and viola, he be watching movies!

I agree. I made the same remark about it too here. The reson I mention it here is not the hack for the RPC1, but it's rather interesting about the firmware hack for the DVD DL burning. And yes, the software works.

Does PortableOne send you an email when your product has shipped?

Also, if you upgrade the hard drive on your purchase, what happens to the hard drive that came with it (40gig 5400rpm)?

As a side note, one can upgrade to DVD burner for about $100-125 with a little easy do it yourself work of about 10 minutes!

You mean external DVD burner right? Let me know when you can do that w/ internal DVD burner for that price. I don't think that's the whole purpose of having a notebook(being mobile) anyway. If I was in the field shooting, I like to be able to burn them to the DVD if I have to.

Today is the supposed ship date for the S6210. That means rougly 51 hours until it arrives (by my estimation).

Has anyone got word of their machine having shipped?

Does PortableOne send you an email when your product has shipped?

Also, if you upgrade the hard drive on your purchase, what happens to the hard drive that originally came with it (40gig 5400rpm)?

Thats exactly what I mean-INTERNAL. I replaced the CD-ROM that came with my P-2120 with the Toshiba SD-R6112. It works just fine. It now sells for about $125 or less and I assume can be replaced in the S-6210 as well. There are other models exchanagable.

Regarding the degree of difficulty! To sum it up---If I can do it---anyone can do it!!
Lets us know when your new one arrives!!

    I believe the SD-R6112 is just DVD-R,RW. It doesn't support +R,RW.
chance are that I don't need that, but might as well get it too.
PS: what were you thinking putiing a DVD burner on something that slow?

I just got off the phone with PortableOne. They said mine would ship today (Tuesday).

Does the order have to be shipped out in the early morning in order to receive it in two days? For example, if mine is shipped out in the late afternoon today (Tuesday), would I still get it on Thursday, or would it be Friday because the FedEx mail would not go out until Wednesday morning? Does anyone have experience with FedEx two day shipping like this?

There is another Toshiba model that does both + and -. I think the model number is on the other Leo Fuji web site!! Mine is 2.0x and the fastest is 2.4 which is neglig different. There are some older DVD players that have problems with DVD+. Be careful -I had a difficult time getting the info 6 months ago. There are websites just to explain the DVD+ and -. The cost of recording media also varies greatly. I cannot tell difference between generic 'price club' super-pac and Imation $3/disk stuff. And thats for CD-R; RW and DVD-R. Can't speak to DVD+R since I no got!
The exchange is really easy. Sev screws and whammo. I did not need anything to change the BIOS and I had Nero software. It boots, slices, dices, cuts and even makes a DVD or two here and there. I think the biggest complaint is the slighly different color of the face plate-I used the original that only says CD-ROM-DVD!!
I await the critique of S-6210!!

On the west coast, they have to get it out by 3pm for overnight or 2day I think.

Finally got tracking number, when lookup, it said 6/18 by 4:30PM.[ :(!]
Unlike other, I haven't impress by PortableOne yet. I'm more incline to the other way around.
    1. They have charge my creditcard right after I placed the order, almost one full month before the product shipped. They may not have done anything wrong, but personally all online resellers I have dealt with don't do that.
    2. Even though it's not Portable One fault for doesn't have the product, it's fujitsu problem, but I think they should let us know by e-mail or order status(website) about the delay, rather than waiting for customer to call, especially on this large scale, It's not like I'm the only one who order S6210 through them. This not only cost inconvenience for the customer, it waste their time as well. They could have eliminate a lot of call.
    3. I don't like people who lied, it's unprofessional. Even they did not say I promised you that such and such, but if they said anything, they should be able to deliver it. Originally, I have confirm with them on Friday, I ask them(Actually just Ivan) nicely, that when they receive the shipment on Monday, do they work the order and shipped out the next day?. He told me, that they do upgrade the same day and shipped out the same day. And that didn't happened. So it's shipped today, Big deal right! The next was that I called earlier today, just like I said I would. And ask for the status, since they told me on Friday it would be shipped by Monday. And they told me that my order was done, but didn't get it to ship ontime on Monday and it would be shipped today, 2 days shipping. Now that I receive the tracking number, the fedex show, it's shipped via fedex Express Saver. Estimated delivery date is Jun 18, 2004 by 4:30 pm. Even not including today, It's still not two days.

Eventhough their price is right, but I don't like their business practice.

I agree in that they should not say it will be sent out on Monday if it will not be sent out on Monday.

I got my tracking number. I am supposed to receive my S6210 on Thursday before 4:30pm.

I also have a quick question:
I know this should not be posted here, but I know someone knowledgeable will read this and give me an answer. My friend bought a Dell desktop a few years ago and it came with XP Pro and Office XP. Does it come with multiple licenses so that I could install Office XP on my system in a legal way? How?

I'm pretty sure that's illegal, except, he uninstalled OfficeXP from his machine, and remove the Windows XP Pro. You cannot have two PC running the same software license legally. If you are not sure, ask Microsoft[ :D]

Three licenses, eh. Are you assuming, or what did you see to come to that conclusion. Buying one disc w/ three licenses is possible, but not common. But buying one PC from Dell and come with three licenses is unlikely. If you are serious about it, then you should obtain more information from your friend, and call Microsoft to confirm. Once you install the Windows XP, you will have to call Microsoft and have them activate anyway(unless that key have never been activated, then you can do it online), so sooner or later you will have to call Microsoft.

Read the MS EULA - think that they allow using Office on a desktop and laptop as long as it is not at the same time.

I'm thinking of ordering the P6210... does it sound like I would have to wait months like some of you out there?
I like the fact that it has a memory stick card reader... but does it accept the newer memory stick PRO cards? I can't find anything about that on the Fujitsu website.
Also, why is portable one selling the p6210 with dvdrw&XPpro for $1850 while also selling it for $1709 with XPhome upgradeable to XPpro for $100.

    Welcome Neelix.

First off, you mean the S6210, minor difference, I bring it up just to be clear. I've made slips like that before and caused minor troubles. [ :)]

Yes, the reader reads pro and do cards (with adaptor). As for the configs, post links to both of them so we can look. This thread is getting lengthy, so you may want to start a new one with any more questions.

The reason some people had to wait so long to get their's is that they pre ordered it, and it is just now coming out. You would not have to wait more than a week or so.

I love this thread, I'm getting excited for you guys with the count down of when it arrives![ :)]

I am looking at the S6210 and the S7010D, what made you choose the 6210 over 7000 series. The weight is not too different (0.25 - 0.3 lbs).

Had you seen the CV screen before?

I'm leaning more towards the S7010D because it is *slightly* thinner

I hope the Fed-Ex is more efficient and it comes earlier!

    Thanks

Freeman, I agree with you and we are extremely frustrated on how the first round of 6210 shipments took roughly 3 weeks to get from Fujitsu, Fujitsu's operations told us 5 to 7 business days to receive and as you can see we have that posted on our site, but there were multiple delays. First off, we only billed your card when we submitted the build order to Fujitsu because when you placed your order, when it was just announced by Fujitsu (one of the very first), we had no idea what units we were going to order to have on hand for stock. Now we are ordering 6210’s for stock and we do not bill people for stock shipments until items are ready to ship, but on special CTO’s we have to bill/authorize customer before submitting the build order to Fujitsu to ensure we are not stuck with a non-standard unit etc. Secondly, we do get upgraded units out on the same day, but we had roughly 1 months of orders arrive on Monday and a couple of machines did not make it that same day, very sorry for that, some customers, such as yourself, ask us to ensure that there are no bad pixels on the display and machine is working perfectly before shipping to them, I think we are the only company in the world that does this and fixes the machine if there is an issue, so that takes roughly 30 minutes, minimum, for each machine, so there just wasn’t enough time for all of the machines on Monday. Lastly, machine is arriving to you in two days, fore instance, when shipping in the bay area, San Francisco thru Sacramento, we will actually ship ground because customer will get it the very next day, even though the carriers web site will state within 5 days, 2 day shipment take 2 days, our shipping department has a carrier map of the country and ships by what the carrier states is 2 day or 1 day, we try to do what is best for the customer, so if we shipped yours on the 15th it should be arriving to you today, can you confirm with me please. And most importantly, please let us know how you like your new machine??

I received my S6210 early at 11:57am as it was supposed to be delivered by 4:30pm[ :)].

Ivan (and the rest of the PortableOne staff), you have a great store with PortableOne. Great phone support, and fast upgrading and shipping. I would not hesitate recommending you to a friend.

So far I am very pleased. It is very light and compact, and of course very stylish. I see no dead pixels or any other defects, so that is good. Although I do hear a very slight (off and on)creek when opening/shutting the lid, but it does NOT bother me, and I am very picky about those sort of things. This is my first notebook (so no past experience or comparison), but I do not notice any keyboard "clacking" defect.

I charged the battery to 100% in about 2.75 hours while playing around with it (nothing intense). The manual said it would take four hours at rest, and more with activity.

I will play with it some more and have a more detailed account of it.

    To Dr. Bailey:
I chose the S6000 over the S7000 because of the lower price.
I had never seen the CV screen before, but it is very nice.
The S6210 seems really thin (and light weight) to me.
FedEx was very efficient, deliverying it over 4.5 hours early!

    P.S.
Feel free to ask me any questions about the S6210?
Is there anyway I can post pictures for the rest of you to see?

    Maybe start a new thread...'S6210 review' ?
We are all interested in learning the fine print of this machine....

Good to hear from P1 also, it's critical to have a vendor you can actually talk to and who does not treat you like an idiot.

This is my first post using the S6210[ :)]
As for the fan noise, I am typing now, and the fan is not running.
I just got done running a Norton Anti Virus scan (60% to 95% CPU usage) and the fan did come on. This is my first notebook, so I have nothing to compare it to, but it sounded just as I thought it would. There was no clicking noise, but I do not know if it was at the lower fan speed you were refering to. The fan was audible, but not annoying or distracting to me.

Would you like me to be more specific, or run any tests on it for you?

Did you want me to start the thread, or someone else?

If anyone else has any questions, I would love to answer them.

P.S. If this gets posted twice, in this thread or another, I apologize, as I thought I had submitted it, but it did not show up, so I typed it again.

    Hello.

Could you comment on the fan noise when doing either normal to processor intesnive tasks.

Do you hear the "clicking" another member hears from the fan when it is on low speed?

Thanks a million for the helpful information.

Thanks, look like I didn't get my laptop as expected. someone drop the ball, FedEx did not have the right address. Can't very point the finger at anyone. And yes I didn't get the laptop today as he said. I'm not saying who messed up, cuz I can't prove that. I haved work with him till the very last minute(call the P1 up and confirm w/ him). P1 did try every effort to get the customer happy, even with the problem not cause by them, and I appreciate that. I meant it. I work in the phone company, and for me, it doesn't matter who messed up, but if I pick up that call, I'll fix it to the best I can(in my little circle of responsibility and authority). Not spending 3 hours to lookup who messed up and toss the problem back to him. But it doesn't change the end result, I didn't have the laptop as it should be. It's 7:30PM now. And I don't think it will happened today.

Freeman, I feel bad for you that you are having to wait so long. I have had to do that in the past and it is no fun.

I know that you will be pleased with your machine and it will be worth the wait. I bet it will come on Friday (what does your FedEx tracking number tell you?).

Sorry I have not got around to installing UT2004 yet. I am being very careful as to what I install. I do not want this computer to become bloated like my desktop.

    So far I have installed:
    Spybot
    Ad Aware
    SlickRun
    Zone Alarm

    Again, sorry about your wait.

well, the exact word from fedex is, "incorrect address."
And yes, I under that, and that's exactly why I will do a full backup first before I do anything else. I know from my past purchase of the P2040 that Fujitsu does not include Windows XP CD or recovery disc.

Finally, my S6210 is home, but I wouldn't know how good/bad/defect until I got home tonight. And I'm about 20 miles from home anyway. Another 6 hours(5working, and 1driving) before I get the chance to open that box. BTW, I already got my modular bay battery.

That is great that it came today, and too bad that you have to wait until you get home in order to use it.

I am currently working on my review of the system. It is a work in progress, as I have not experienced some of the features yet, like wifi, graphics, benchmarks, etc. I will look into these areas and complete my review soon.

Is there a way to post pictures of the machine in the review? If not, what is a good and free site that will allow you to upload pictures for viewing by others?

I will soon head off to the local computer store and look at (and maybe buy) some accessories. A carrying case, optical mouse, router, printer, etc. are all on my list. I am also going to get Microsoft Office 2003 for less than $70 through the local University's academic pricing!

That'll be great to see a full review. I've been waiting for my S6210 P1 order to ship for a while and I think it should ship sometime next week. Bad Fujitsu for making me wait! I was disappointed I won't have it for my next business trip. I was counting on using it in my presentation. I had seen the S6120 a while back and thought they were the perfect size/price for my next notebook purchase.

BudBear, when did you order it?
I ordered mine from PortableOne on 6/11, they got their shipment in on 6/14, got mine customized and sent out on 6/15 at 4:25pm, and I received it on 6/17 at 11:55am. Thanks PortableOne [ ;)].

I ordered it on 6/1. They said Fujitsu was running behind in their orders and it would ship from Japan on 6/21, then ship from them on 6/23 or 6/24. I think I may be giving them a call about this.

I don't know if it was the specific config I ordered or what. It was a 1.6Ghz, DVD Multi (+-RW) and 80GB 5400 HD. Everything else was stock.

    Thanks for the info.

I ordered mine at 9, and got ship date at 28. When I asked p1 about this, they said all orders placed at 9 are scheduled at 28. I didn't customize anything. [ :(]
