Nvidia is a brand of Graphics card. The other brand is ATI.

Vram is the term used to describe how much dedicated RAM memory(if any) a graphics card has. All dedicated graphics cards have Vram, whether Nvidia or ATI.
ex: blah blah card with 256mb dedicated Vram

So I think you're confusing the terms a bit lol :p

As for what is better to have in a notebook, it all depends on what you're doing...

This is kinda important topics for me, as i'm looking for a laptop for both engineering and gaming.

If i stick the 9600m GT drivers onto a machine with a Quadro FX770 would it be close or equivalent to the 9600m GT card in terms of playing games?

Also can someone please tell what would the FX1700 be based on?

if you're talking about the m4400, the best drivers seem to be the stock drivers for the fx770. does very well with games too.

the FX1700 is not really a 9700M GT......check the dell forum for more details and benchmarks. it hardly provides any performance edge over the fx770

Are there any drivers that can increase the frame rate of the NVIDIA FX 370M card in the Dell Precision M2400?

I am trying to run Real Flight on my M2400 and I can't get better than about 20 to 30 fps. I used to get 60 to 90 fps on my old Latitude D620 with an Intel 945GM chipset - which ran Real Flight well.

Any advice will be most appreciated.

Guys, ask those question in the Dell section, people there most likely will know more about the current state of the drivers.

This part seems hard to believe: that, if regular 'consumer' drivers are installed on a workstation card, then it will function just as well for gaming? So I should have absolutely no reservations about buying Quadro FX 360M, if I think I will be satisfied with the performance of a 8400M-GS?

    Dell Precision m4400
    2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo (T9600) Processor
    Memory: 2.0GB, 800MHz, DDR2 SDRAM
    Windows Vista Business
nVidia Quadro FX 770M 512MB Dedicated Video Card / FX1700M
120GB FFS (Free Fall Sensor) Hard Drive

I know there is a difference but how much of a difference will there be between the FX770M and the FX1700M Graphics Cards to run Empire: Total War and Solidworks?

Is it enough of a difference to be worth getting it?

    Thanks in Advance

The specs are in the link in my sig (scroll down to the picture). The only dif is TDP and core clock boosted a little (+25%). The performance is <10% better.

I read this thread and I get confused  ... Can I buy a customer graphic card and turn it into a professional card just by driver ??

For example (as what I read), the NVS160M is based on FX370M but is much cheaper.

Or can you just go in reverse (professional to consumer)

    Thank you

You can only go from professional to consumer card. Before you could do the other way, but I'm pretty sure you can't do that any more. I think about the professional card as the same as the consumer card but with a extras for certain applications (ISV, CAD, etc.), hence why you can always just use consumer drivers to get the same performance as the consumer card.

Since Dreamer hasn't been around for a while, it would be nice if a couple of people can gather a list of current (new) generation of NVS/Quadro/FireGL GPUs so I can update the list. I am not sure if I can update the diagrams but I will do what I can. :)

    Thanks.

Abit of a late reply but....... :p

It is still possible with ATI cards I believe. Schoko have been doing a great job with modded HD2600 drivers for the FireGL V5600 for us HP8510p users. :D In theory it is possible to apply the same mod for other cards, just that no one has tried it yet.
